Join your favorite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian and BFF of the BFE from The Scuttlebutt Podcast (Megs, B-Tech Kev & Liam are off training for their next big fight) – as we step into the ring for grit, determination, and Depression-era boxing in Cinderella Man (2005). We're swapping a grimy Edinburgh flat for Madison Square Garden and diving into our 267th episode as we discuss: How Russell Crowe delivers a knockout performance as James J. Braddock. Renée Zellweger's role as the supportive yet strong Mae Braddock – does she get enough credit? Does Paul Giamatti steal the show as the passionate manager, Joe Gould? The realism of the boxing sequences – do they hold up in 2024? Is it fair to call this film a boxing film or is it something else? Who is the biggest villain of the movie: the Great Depression, Promoter James Johnston, Max Baer, or the system keeping Braddock down? Could this be Ron Howard's most underrated film? We talk about hockey's Four Nations tournament and why sports make the best narratives.  Whether Cinderella Man is the Best Film Ever. Today, we're lacing up our gloves and stepping into the ring with a real underdog story, Cinderella Man.Directed by Ron Howard, Cinderella Man takes us back to the Great Depression, where we meet James J. Braddock, a once-promising boxer forced into retirement after a string of losses. But as fate would have it, he gets a second chance – an opportunity to fight again, and this time, it's about much more than just a title. This film isn't just a boxing movie; it's a powerful tale of perseverance, family, and the human spirit. Renee Zellweger shines as Braddock's steadfast wife, Mae, offering a portrayal that's both tender and strong. Paul Giamatti, as Braddock's trainer and friend, Joe Gould, delivers a stellar performance, capturing the essence of the boxing world during one of its darkest times.Cinderella Man takes us through an emotional rollercoaster. In this episode, he explores the extraordinary life of James J. Braddock and his indomitable spirit. In 1935, many Americans were at wit's end, not knowing how long this Depression would last and how they could possibly take another step forward. In the midst of this harrowing time in our nation's history, Jimmy Braddock showed everyone the power of an iron chin.

His name was James J. Braddock. In 1929 he was the middleweight contender for boxing champion of the world. He had it all- a wonderful wife, 3 kids, a nice home, and money in the bank- because boxers were the highest paid athletes in those days. The depression hit, his bank failed- and all his money was gone. He lost his house, his boxing skills faded after breaking his right hand in a bout, and he soon found himself working part time at the docks to try to support his wife and kids who were living in a run- down apartment. He finally had to go on welfare. He had a manager named Joe Gould, who never gave up on him, and got him a big fight in 1934- which he won, And then another. Then he took $300 and took it to the county welfare office and paid them back for what he had taken. Then he got the chance of a lifetime- to fight Max Baer for the heavyweight title. Max Baer had killed a man in the ring, and considered Braddock to be a washed up has-been. Max Baer had a surprise in store. Learn more about your ad choices.

This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we break down the movie Cinderella Man starring Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, and Paul Giamatti. Crisis reveals character, and in James J. Braddock we see a reflection of true fatherhood. He used his creativity to create a world of hope, refusing to allow it to fuel his fear. The fights we face aren't about us, but handling them with integrity bring inspiration to others. It's time to get in the ring, and discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What crises have you experienced? How do you respond in a crisis? Does your creativity envision a hopeful future, or a fear-filled future? There are certain areas across the United States that seem to draw UFOs. Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California, is a place where you can see UFOs coming in and out of the water, and where, in 2014 it was rumored that one Google Earth image showed an underwater alien base under the water. Well, that claim turned out to be bunk, but the area is still known as UFO hot spot. On September 20th, 2011 Chuck Zukowski introduced the world to a new theory called the 37th Degree Theory. Chuck noted how a number of UFO sightings and cattle mutilations were concentrated all along the 37th parallel. There are other infamous hot spots around the United States, such as the Pine Bush area of upstate New York, the American Southwest, and Pacific Northwest to name a few. One ordinary town has seen a fair share of UFO sightings since 1975. North Bergen, a town of 60,000 residents, can be found just across the Hudson river, opposite Manhattan. On January 12, 1975, a dramatic landing took place in North Hudson Park, across from the famed Stonehenge apartment complex. From West 89th Street in Manhattan, this building can been seen. Today, it’s towering edifice serves as a monument to a strange incident involving a UFO and a group of short beings that took an interest in the soil. In this episode, Jayson and Bryan venture into the story of the iconic boxer James J. Braddock, also known as Cinderella Man.  We break down his life story from his birth in New York's infamous Hell's Kitchen, living through the Spanish Flu Pandemic, losing everything in the Great Depression, and from the bottom rising up from extreme poverty to becoming the world boxing heavyweight champion.  A man of deep faith that lived out his principles and would not compromise to the easy way out.  A great example for our current day.  The question is why do we not have these kind of heroes emerging today, or have we created a society that villainizes those who would dare hold true to their values in spite of all the odds? The quote that best summarizes this episode is from Father Charles Rorick: "Maybe Sometimes people need to see someone do it so they can do it themselves." I welcome our new listeners, the NSA. Lawhead’s  Court takes a left hand turn by asking if Matt Damon could've caught mouth HPV from Michael Douglas behind the Candelabra. The Cinderella Man James J. Braddock is revived on this day. Tebow jerseys start printing in New England to top from 3. While a pot head dog is cursing Cleveland. Golfing is a huge part of the Lawhead life & the U.S. Open starts on classic ground at Merion in Philly with memories of golf's "toughest" finishing on fathers day.
