POPULARITY
The music NEVER stopped. On this episode we dive into one of the better pop culture documentaries that we have seen in recent memory in 'Disco's Revenge'.In the early 70s, the beat child of New York's Black and LGBTQ+ communities was born on the city's underground dance floor. Disco emerged as an exuberant musical genre, a vital social movement and a vibrant culture before enduring a vicious backlash nearly a decade later. In our collective pop-culture imagination, Disco's merely a fad relegated to soft-focus memories of Saturday Night Fever and Studio 54. It is a pulsating deep dive into the very soul of disco music and its enduring impact across genres and history, told by the people who created it, nurtured it, and in turn, discovered themselves on the dancefloor. The film asks: Why does disco matter and, in these divisive times, why does disco matter now more than ever? Featuring interviews and performances by Nile Rodgers and Chic, Billy Porter, Nona Hendryx and LaBelle, Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy, Nicky Siano, Earl Young and The Trammps, Jellybean Benitez, Kevin Saunderson, Sylvester and Martha Wash and many others. Never has a film really got as anthropological when looking at a slice of music culture and that's what makes 'Disco's Revenge' so damn special. With sit down with writer/direcfor's Omar Majeed and Peter Mishara to get deep into the groove of it all.'Disco's Revenge' is on all VOD platforms.
We celebrate the Birth of Disco. Janita (Jenny) Haan has been called “the most powerful voice in rock history” from her work with British ‘prog-rock band, Babe Ruth. With a career spanning an incredible 50 years, the band led by composer/arranger/guitarist Alan Shacklock had many hits, their single “The Mexican” being a hit twice when it was taken up by remixer Jellybean Benitez and the hip-hop community in the 80s. Jenny talks about how she developed her powerful vocal sound, dance moves and trademark costumes. Most impressive is her charm, her positive attitude and open mind. In a world filled with inflated egos, this is a rare example of a band that succeeded because of mutual respect allowing them to work together to achieve success. Adele Bertei was born in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of an Italian immigrant and a ballroom dance instructor. She became a ward of the state in 1967, with the rest of her childhood years spent in foster homes and reformatories in the greater Cleveland area. Emancipated at 17, she worked a series of jobs including OT assistant at a Veteran’s Hospital, and as one of the first women to work on the assembly line at the Ford Motors plant in Lorain, Ohio in 1973. Her career in music began as singer/guitarist in a rock band called Peter and the Wolves, performing at longshoremen and biker bars in Cleveland. The premature death of bandmate, the legendary Peter Laughner of Pere Ubu resulted in Bertei's move to New York in 1977, where she quickly became a pivotal figure in a counter-cultural movement of art, film, music, and literature. She was an original member of the critically lauded Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on the seminal No New York record. Reading prose and poetry, she opened for writers such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker among many others. Bertei acted in several underground films, including a lead role in Born In Flames by Lizzie Borden, films by Scott & Beth B., and films by Irish filmmaker Vivienne Dick. She’s been the subject of artists and photographers Kiki Smith, Richard Prince, Nan Goldin, Zoe Leonard, and David La Chappelle. Bertei has toured the world as a musician with her band, the Bloods – one of America’s first all-girl bands – and as backing singer with Tears for Fears. She has performed and recorded as a backing vocalist for artists such as Thomas Dolby, Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard, and Matthew Sweet among others. She released records as a solo artist with both the Geffen and Chrysalis labels and has had international dance and pop hits with Thomas Dolby (“Hyperactive!”) and Jellybean (“Just a Mirage”). Bertei has written songs for artists as diverse as Peter Laughner, Thomas Dolby, Scritti Politti, Sheena Easton, Arthur Baker, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Matthew Sweet, Lydia Lunch, the Pointer Sisters, Jellybean Benitez, and the Anubian Lights. As we go through one of the most stressful, chaotic times in our history, it's important that we try to stay on track where our health is concerned. I don't know about you, but, this is one area I've been having a difficult time. One of the ways I like to exercise in the pool. At first, the closed the pools at our complex for the first three months. Then, they re-opened them with limited hours (8-5) all of which I would be working and unable to get there at those times. Now, I'm just very anxious about getting into the pool with this virus around. Are you feeling like you can't get your workout in they way you used to? Do you feel like you're gaining weight because of it? I do. And, it's really bothering me. So, this week I've made the decision that I will start dancing again. Join me August 8th for one of the best workouts you'll have had in decades. Daybreaker is a dance group from around the globe. I first saw them when I went to see Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour in Miami this past January and they kicked off the conference. They were such an amazing, high-energy and fun opener, we were all on our feet dancing and opening up our Chakra's it was truly spectacular. I went to one of my first virtual experiences with them and I was blown away. The theme was Dancing Through The Decades, they had Jefferson Starship playing via live-stream. Debbie Allen (choreographer from The FAME movie (my mentor during my dance career), The Village People Singing via live-stream and Gloria Gaynor singing her infamous tune "I Will Survive" and JellyBean Benitez spinning the tunes via livestream. It was truly my 2nd best Saturday morning I ever spent (Oprah was the first). You're in luck, cause she's running another one coming up on August 8th. Here's the link DAYBREAKER SIGN UP . I don't know what the theme will be, but, I'm sure, it will not disappoint. Be sure to sign up!! I'll see you there. We are stronger in numbers, let's do this! Here's to your health, fitness, happiness, love and success!! Rock On & Rock Out! Dawn-Marie XO Let's Stay in touch: IG: @lildrummergirl55 FB: Dawn-Marie Mutell

Yes, E.G. Daily has been an accomplished actor, voice over artist, and singer/songwriter for over 35 years, but to me she will always be the Queen of the 80s Movie Soundtrack. Her "unmistakable" voice can be heard in decade defining films like The Breakfast Club, Summer School, Scarface, and Better Off Dead, in which she also appeared. Plus, in addition to her own successful solo career, she's collaborated with artists like Giorgio Moroder, Jude Cole, Phil Oakey, Jellybean Benitez and the Cruzados. We discuss her many years in the business, the stories behind many of her songs, what she still wants to accomplish, and her greatest role - motherhood. Enjoy! https://egdaily.com/

EPISODE 40 CELEBRATION featuring legendary techno head REPETE!!! Please make sure to read the awesome BIO and check out the interview beneath. A true legend was born when RePete broke through the barriers of techno music and brought it to the next level. He was the first to introduce techno music to New York City nightlife and it earned him his true legendary status. The New York City club scene had exploded due to the new sound and vibe RePete introduced. One of RePete’s biggest accomplishments throughout his career was a performance in front of 16,000 people in Dortmund, Germany called May Day. RePete has worked with various talented artists such as Josh Wink, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Audio Injection, Drumcell, Alex Bau, Lex Gorrie, A-Brothers, Carl Cox, Joey Beltran, Hans Bouffmyhre, Damon Wild, Victor Calerdone, Sven Vath, Moby, Prodigy, Jellybean Benitez, Charlie Low Noise, Mental Theo, Rob Gee, and DBX Dan Bell. We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast, and don't forget to follow Monument for more techno, art, and upcoming events! Where was this mix recorded? 1. The mix was recorded at a club in Brooklyn NY called Output. Output one of the best club in NY. When playing my set I was feeding off of the crowd and the crowd was feeding off of me. To keep it simple "It was MASSIVE!" With many years of techno experience, how would you say the scene has evolved? 2. Too keep it simple. I have way over 10 years of techno experience. It all started out in the early 90's at a club called Limelight in NYC. It was at the Limelight where we exposed techno to crowds of 2,000-3,000 followers every Friday night. The party was called Future Shock. What is one of your most memorable nights? 3. The most memorable night was performing in Germany at Mayday. Me and Damon Wild started a group called Equinox and we where popular in Germany. We where act before Moby that night. I was nervous as staring down at a loaded shot gun. The MC announced us and there was dead silence. We where having technical problems. The crowd was whistling and cheering. All of a sudden the kick drum came through the sound system and the crowd went insane. It was like some one scored the game winning goal in a playoff Football game. What has kept you going? 4. Passion and the love of music. After the Limelight I was burnet out. I took years off from music. During that time I felt an empty void in my life. Now I feel like myself again. Any extra words for us youngstas? 5. Find a group of people who are on the same head as you. Work together, share ideas, learn together. Stay humble and ask other local DJ's who are big in the scene if there is any way they can help out. Pay your dues. Don't get discouraged and keep your head up. It takes time to built an empire.
