I am grateful to offer their messages to us all-through the books that I am asked to write, the voice I still have to speak it into the winds and the spirit that still burns with the fire and passion of one who seeks to contribute to a new journey, a better dream for all women and consequently, for all our Human Tribe. The urgency of the moment, the world that is at the precipice of a grand transformation has called me to join the hearts and hands of my sisters, who also find themselves being called to act in this NOW moment. Whatever I can do, whatever I can offer, it is my giveaway at this important time. There can be no greater call for me to answer in this season of my life. Emancipation from our agreement and subsequent partnership with our slavery to decay, is a crucial revelation required for us to manifest heaven's design for a victorious and indeed glorious eschatology. The Ten Commandments are strategies for staying emancipated once you get away from Pharaoh. This new strategy, first of all, says you have to honor God - that's the first three commandments - to the exclusion of every idol, every "ism" such as racism, or sexism, or nationalism, or the worship of stuff that is rare or precious or attractive or beautiful or empowering. The new strategy means in the Ten Commandments to take the neighbor with utmost seriousness. So, the last five commandments are all about the neighbor and treating neighbors with legitimacy and dignity and viability and especially disadvantaged neighbors - not to violate the neighbor for the sake of greed.

You have been made free from sin. Romans chapter 6
Angelo Keely found himself in a bad place. At the age of 16, Angelo found himself beaten and stabbed. His abdomen ripped open, Angelo found himself fighting for his life. It marked a turning point in Angelo's life. He had to rebuild himself from scratch from that day forward with very little support. It was on him. Angelo's recovery has led him to many places - silent 10-day meditation retreats, traveling through the Himalayas, living in France, and launching Kion. Angelo's recovery started with improving his diet and lifestyle, but he dabbled in just about everything: barefoot running, yoga, breathwork to martial arts. Angelo turned his trials into triumphs by truly challenging himself to answer the tough questions and keeping an open mind to new experiences to grow. His story of starting Kion epic and inspiring. For anyone looking to learn more about overcoming adversity, launching a business, and (most importantly) tapping into optimal health through diet and lifestyle, this ones for you. One of the best parts of the conversation is when Angelo takes us through a deep dive of 'what is an essential amino acid?' and 'why do we need essential amino acids?'. This was a rollercoaster of a conversation with so many unique pieces of value - we hope you enjoy!SPONSORS The Carnivore Bar - CODE MAFIA for 10% OFF - Delicious & convenient Pemmican Bar Fond Bone Broth - 15% OFF - REAL bone broth with HIGH-QUALITY ingredients! When it comes to Black History, there are so many stories that aren't told. You can't know what you don't know or what is ignored. We aren't here to talk about the past trauma of Black History in North America, but rather, their strengths and triumphs. In this episode, I'm talking to Dr. Crystal Menzies about honouring the history of slavery forced upon Black people, but also, recognizing that the Black history is not only tied to that trauma. There is a deep and rich history of power, influence and resistance. Crystal talks about “Community Cultural Wealth” to teach both students and teachers not to look at Black students as, “a problem” but to see them through a lens of what is ALSO TRUE. That they bring with them a history of cultural capital assets that are aspirational familial, linguistic, social, navigational and resistant. She looks to stories of Maroon communities who were formed from Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies, as a way to model liberation within oppression. This is a great conversation to star having with your kids so we can all reframe the way we see Black people, communities and history. For Crystal's EmancipatED Book List, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Crystal Menzies A former educator in urban schools, Crystal drew on her personal experience, African-Diasporan history, and her Guyanese and African American roots to found EmancipatED where she develops research-based educational experiences that center Black communities. In her flagship product, she draws on the stories of Maroon communities – Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies – to offer Black and Brown families a model for how to navigate as liberated beings within oppressive systems. She lives in the Bay Area (or the Yay area as she affectionately refers to it) and enjoys reading, Marvel movies, and daydreaming of Black Futures. Author & documentarian Vince Everett Ellison grew up the child of sharecroppers on a cotton plantation in Tennessee, but his father worked hard to build a successful businesses that brought his family out of poverty and squarely into the middle class. He sees now in Black Americans a worrying lack of that same initiative, and he suspects a number of factors are responsible: A lack of religious faith. Promotion of gratuitous sex and violence as a cultural lifestyle. But, most of all, a wider plot among the progressive left to promote the notion that institutional racism is an inescapable fact of life, and to make Black Americans see themselves as eternal victims. Ellison shares his point of view with Victoria in this episode, and how through a return to faith, family-values and self-reliance the Black community can ascend to respectful prosperity, an argument that is sometimes controversial, often inspirational, and always thought-provoking. In the episode today, we're going to hear all about Ryan's eating disorder recovery journey with the ups and downs of this. A new Governor was in town, the Cape Sheriff, and he was another Peninsular Campaign Veteran called Sir Benjamin D'Urban. In July 1832 Frontier military commander Colonel Henry Somerset went on leave - his father the former governor Lord Charles had died in 1831 and Henry had to head back to the old country to sort out the extensive estate. Andries Stockenstrom, his nemesis, was also going to leave the frontier in 1833, first to London where he tried to lobby the government to give him more authority - and when the Colonial authorities refused - he sailed back to his ancestral land - Sweden. We should feel a pang of pity for Stockenstrom, his father had been assegai'd to death by the amaxhosa and his only son, an infant, had just died of illness in South Africa. The mental anguish had driven him away from his beloved frontier, and his adopted territory. Another character of the moment arrived in Grahamstown in July 1832 - Colonel Richard England. He was supposed to keep things sunning smoothly while Henry Somerset returned home. Colonel England was not going to run things smoothly, for he immediately stepped up the patrols following up on cattle rustled by the amaXhosa, and thus increased tension. As you know, these raids were supposed to be organised and focused, all they really did was commit the same crime in return - often rustling amaXhosa cattle from villages that had nothing to do with the theft. Their chiefs were first in line when patrols returned and had the most to lose from thieving - other chiefs further away knew this and used them as cover. The instability inland and along the coast was something to behold in the years between 1832 and 1835. South African history is cluttered with the the sound of bones being crunched by hyenas, eyeballs being feasted upon by vultures, and a cacophony of chaos. Forgive the histrionics, but I'm sure you'll agree once you've heard what happened over the next five years. For those who would blame one side or another exclusively, there's bad news. Everyone was involved in some kind of nefarious activity it was just a matter of the degree of nefariousness, or your support for one side or the many others. IN 1832 Mzilikazi sent an impi northwards, all the way across the Limpopo and into Shona territory in modern day Zimbabwe. The Zulu heard about this, and Dingane thought it an ideal moment to teach the former Khumalo chief a lesson. The Zulu Regent ordered Ndlela kaSompisi along with a large Zulu army to raid Mzilikazi's territory centred on the Magaliesberg mountains west of Pretoria, at a place called Dinaneni - or Wonderboompoort as we call it today. During fierce fighting close to the Apies River, Ndlela took on Mzilikazi himself in a right royal battle. In November 1833, while Henry Somerset was away dealing with papa Charle's will and trust, Colonel England arrived in Fort Beaufort to drive Maqoma and his people away from the Mankazana River, below the scenic Anatola mountains. England was more a colonial's man - a fundamentalist if you like. A two year drought had placed more pressure on the settlers and the amaxhosa. Colonel England didn't care - and another empire deployee called Colonel Thomas Wade appeared who made matters even worse.

I recorded this introduction on Frederick Douglass's birthday which happens to be Valentine's Day. Please check out Frederick Douglass Suite; Black History Month 2023In this episode, you get to hear Part One of the Chaconne Emancipated, a performance piece that interweaves Bach and African American spirituals with excerpts from Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech and Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.Did you know that Dr. King made that speech on the anniversary of Emancipation Proclamation at the Lincoln Memorial? After hearing the performance, Michael Jamanis and I have a rich conversation with guest interviewer Rev. Rhetta Morgan about:✅ Ego and the creation process✅ How African American spirituals worked on Michael✅ How I went from hating classical music to loving Bach✅ How traditional classical music audiences resisted this performance but then we found a home in non-traditional spaces such as rallies, Black History Month programs, etc. To continue the work of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, we need to be able to have authentic, heart-centered conversations with people of good will across the color line. Sometimes this is hard, but if you stay present and don't over identify with your ego, anything is possible. Stories are a powerful tool for liberation when we see ourselves in a character that demonstrates ingenuity and creativity on their quest for freedom. In particular, the stories of rebel Black communities can inspire our youth today when they are told alongside stories that describe historical violence and oppression. Dr. Crystal Menzies is a qualitative researcher and entrepreneur on a mission to uncover the hidden history of Black folks. She joins Natalie to tell the story of Maroon communities and how she is likewise on a quest to discover liberated spaces outside of the limitations of schools and organizations. As more and more people begin to recognize the pitfalls of the systems we're entrenched in—capitalism, neoliberalism, consumerism, and more—we are often left without clear directions for instilling change. In this episode of Anti-Capitalist Chronicles, Prof. Harvey addresses the question he is so often asked, and often asks himself: “What should we do?” Harvey urges us to begin by looking at our individual situation, particularly five aspects: quality of life in the household, nature of the labor market, experience in the workplace, experience as money manager, and experience as buyer in the money market. The pedagogy of the emancipated laborer involves situating ourselves in those five aspects of society, connecting with others on the local level who are situated around us, and building collectively.
In this episode, I'm honored to welcome Dr. Crystal Menzies to the podcast to talk about her personal journey in education, the founding of The EmanicpatED, her collaborative research work with the Maroon communities, and how teachers can incorporate Black historical counternarratives into the curriculum. To learn more about Crystal's work, you can visit the EmancipatED website at emancipatededucation.com or you can follow her on LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter (@emancipate_ed). BIO: Crystal Menzies, PhD (she/her) is an educator of Black and Brown youth, a postdoctoral researcher studying cultural community wealth, and the founder of EmancipatED. A former culturally responsive teacher in urban schools, Crystal aspired to teach her students about ways of being and thinking that did not center whiteness. However, she quickly realized that it would take more than being a “good teacher” to dismantle the systems of oppression that led to the systemic violence she and her students experienced. In an effort to tell a more expansive story of the Black experience across the Diaspora that didn't perpetuate trauma narratives, Crystal traveled the globe to learn about the rich history of resistance and liberation movements that are often made invisible in our collective history books. Drawing on her Guyanese and African American roots, the legacy of Black educators, educational psychology, liberatory pedagogy, and African-Diasporan history, Crystal founded EmancipatED to uncover our hidden Black history. Through research-based educational products that center Black communities, Crystal hopes to create environments in which Black people, as a collective, can find joy, empowerment, and community through multi-generational learning. Her flagship product is an exploration kit that shares the stories of Maroon communities, which offers Black and Brown families a model for how to navigate as liberated beings within oppressive systems. She lives in the Bay Area (or the Yay area as she affectionately refers to it) and enjoys reading, Marvel movies, and daydreaming of Black Futures. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/identitytalk4educators/support

Dr. Crystal Menzies, Founder & Chief Innovation Officer of EmancipatED, recalls spending a lot of time in the library while growing up. She had her world changed when she finished a book on ancient Egypt. From that point on, she knew she wanted to pursue a career that allowed her to be curious about the world. As she learned more about the world and more specifically Black history, she wanted to share that with future generations so that they would feel empowered by their ancestors. As with many of us, it wasn't a straight path but her journey is filled with inspiration to seek ways to do all the things that disrupt previous limiting ways of thinking. You will learn:how books build bridges to other worlds and allow you to experience diverse cultures and lives.that unique perspectives can be turned into superpowers and allow you to see things that other people don't see.taking the step of putting theories into action is not easy but we all possess the power to make an impact when we do.Connect with Crystal at:EmancipatED / IG
One of the barriers for well meaning white folks and BIPOC who want to see a better world is this belief in the inevitability of positive outcomes. Dr. Crystal Menzies When Dr. Menzies drops this pearl of insight into the latest Inclusive Life Podcast conversation with Nicole, Nicole names the “inevitability of positive outcomes” as “a uniquely U.S. American specific ‘cultural hiccup.'” The belief that it'll all work out in the end suggests a reality that doesn't comport with the history of revolutions. There's no one “out there” who is going to save us. Dr. Crystal Menzies is a Black educator who has been on a quest for liberatory co-collaborators. She didn't find them within the education system. She didn't find them in non-profits, even within those organizations with anti-racist mission statements and rhetoric. Her truth telling was met with vilification and ostracization, even from her allies. Ultimately her quest- motivated by a desire to share the story of Black resistance, genius, and joy with her students- led her to the history and living reality of Maroon communities. Maroon communities are communities of self-emancipated Africans, folks who escaped from enslavement and started their own free rebel Black communities living in resistance to white supremacy and chattle slavery. These communities, varying in size, are a historical and living example of how, as Dr. Menzies shares, “folks get their freedom and maintain their freedom when surrounded by an oppressive system.” Her study of Maroon cultures were the impetus for her current work, EmancipatEd, where the vision is to soak in the Black history of resistance, joy, and innovation to reimagine what is possible for Black communities. The work of EmancipatEd is done in collaboration with people who are (actually factually) from Maroon communities from Accompong, Jamaica, San Basilio de Palenque, in Colombia and Helvecia Bahia, Brazil. Nicole and Dr. Menzies discuss that it is with these communities of resistance (and antagonism!) that we find a path forward in a time when the arc desperately needs more bending. Rather than a trust in the inevitability of justice, In Maroon communities, there is a fundamental “by any means necessary” determination. Maroon communities, both those that survived and didn't, are rooted in self-defense, self-determination, and the building of alliances and community with like minded people. In Maroon communities, there is a unity of purpose upon which their survival depends. This unity doesn't imply agreement on all things. In fact, embedded in this unity is the understanding that there will be trade-offs and radical sacrifice: it's not going to be pretty. It's so important to know this history and these amazing humans, and Dr. Menzies is devoted to bringing Maroon stories to her Black students. These stories awaken these children and teens to their own freedom stories already unfolding in themselves, their families, and their communities. It helps them thrive outside the white gaze. When people believe the arc of justice is already bent, it keeps them complacent and believing that somewhere out there is someone who will get us across the finish line to justice and liberation. The stories from Maroon people tell a different story: that we must actively, tenaciously, by-all-means-necessary bend it ourselves. We hope you enjoy this conversation! If you'd like to know more about Maroon communities throughout the world, you can begin here, and also explore EmancipatEd Hidden History Cards.
