In this episode, host Tyler Chisholm is joined by Jim Dunn, President of Stack Modular, to unpack Jim's insights and experiences in an industry often overshadowed by misconceptions and traditional barriers. From an unplanned leap from LA beaches to the bustling world of Chinese manufacturing, Jim's path to becoming a leader in modular construction is as fascinating as it is inspiring. You'll discover what makes Stack Modular a standout in the industry. Known for their innovative approach, they construct modular buildings in China, transporting them worldwide efficiently and precisely akin to building with giant LEGO blocks. In this episode in our Allocator's Edge mini-series we welcome Craig Thomas, Chief Investment Officer of Verger Capital Management. In this role, he oversees all aspects of the firm's investment process, including asset allocation, portfolio construction and manager selection. Prior to co-founding Verger, Craig spent ten years performing similar investment duties for Wake Forest University's Office of Investments where he most recently served as Director of Investments. He also serves as a mentor with Girls Who Invest, is a board member of Disability Advocates of Northwest North Carolina, and has also served as an Advisory Board member to a number of investment partnerships. And if the name Verger Capital Management is ringing bells, it may be because the firm's CEO Jim Dunn was a guest on the podcast last year. In the episode we chat with Craig about putting Verger's 3 Ps into practice; the importance of portfolio diversification and liquidity in uncertain times; dealing with higher inflation and maintaining a focus on absolute returns; and finally, reasons to select and change fund managers. The discussion highlights key elements such as empowering teams, keeping up with new technologies, and ensuring everyone is aligned with the company's vision. Jim emphasizes that true leadership involves making yourself irrelevant by delegating tasks and allowing others to thrive in their roles. As the conversation unfolds, Jim outlines how leaders can balance being passionate about the business and maintaining objectivity. He offers practical advice on creating clear priorities, hiring the right people, and continuously refining processes to ensure organizational growth. Jim Dunn is the CEO and CIO of Verger Capital Management, an Outsourced CIO business whose anchor client is Wake Forest University. Prior to forming Verger, he served as CIO of Wake Forest for five years. That transition from a sole client to an OCIO business, is a fascinating part of our conversation. Before joining Wake, Jim traveled the world as CIO of Wilshire Associates, where among other things he experienced the best story of a manager getting their foot in the door that I've ever heard. He got his start in the business trading death spiral convertible bonds at a now defunct hedge fund and got introduced to manager selection at Investorforce. Our conversation starts with Jim's career path, and covers a full range issues in allocating capital. We discuss defining risk tolerance, a factor-based approach to asset allocation, separating talent from luck in manager selection, the politics of endowment management, challenges using internal management, and culture. If you listen carefully, you'll hear a few one-liners. Welcome to Allocator's Edge, a Value Perspective podcast mini-series where we will be engaging in conversations with some of the world's top capital allocators. In this everchanging landscape of heightened inflation and interest rates, we aim to unravel how and why capital allocators make the decisions that they do. Join us as we explore the nuances between healthcare foundations, examining the impact of inflation on endowments and the strategic choices between share buybacks and dividends for pension schemes. In this miniseries we aim to shed light on the inner workings of capital allocation, helping both investment teams and listeners gain a better understanding of mandates, global interplay and the intricate dance between strategy and reality. New episodes of the Allocator's Edge will be released on alternating Thursdays. In this episode we are joined by Chetan Gosh. Chetan joined Schroders in 2022 as part of the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) Solutions team. You may recall our discussion on OCIO from our recent episode with Jim Dunn in the US. Today we'll chat with Chetan about what that role looks like in the UK, including his aim to be the provider of choice for OCIO and Fiduciary Management Services. Before joining Schroders, Chetan was the CIO of Centrica's pension scheme arrangements and the firm's CIO for 12 years. There, his role covered investment strategy considerations, asset class and manager research, and liaison with investment advisors. Previous to Centrica, Chetan developed a fiduciary management offering at an asset manager, following his start as a pensions actuary. In this episode, Juan and Chetan sat down to discuss what is an OCIO; the challenges of the UK pension industry and all of its different schemes; caps on fees; runs to passives and the newest entrant on the scene – alternatives; how the gilts crisis impacts the industry and finally the impact of inflation.

Welcome to our first episode of the Hollywood Confessional! In this week's episode, we hear confessions from two up-and-comers as they battle condescension, abuse, toxic work environments, and even a car crash on their journeys to gain respect and a foothold in the entertainment industry. Can Lady"I wanted to quit that job every single day. But I kept going, and that ended up bringing me on the career path that I'm on now. When you have a positive attitude and you're resourceful, you can really do anything." Our first confession, "Can Lady," tells the story of an office production assistant who, after being hired to pick up an actor for costume fitting, gets into a car accident in the parking lot! Later, their domineering boss, the "Can Lady," unceremoniously fires them in the midst of a national emergency. But amazingly, despite these insane setbacks, the Confessor finds a way to spin all this to their advantage. It's a Man's World"I always thought I was guilty until proven innocent. And even if I was innocent, it didn't matter. I would always say to myself, 'Are your shorts too short? Are you resting in a sexy way?' I didn't even realize that this was complete sexual harassment."Confessor 2 is the only female on an all-male art department crew in "It's a Man's World," and they make her feel it. Despite working insane hours, taking on far more work than she's getting paid for, and putting up with aggressive sexual harassment, she doesn't get the credit she deserves. Instead, she gets falsely accused of stealing from the company... which leads her to a life-changing revelation. These two amazing confessions get into the following:How to survive in Hollywood -- literally! How to tell the difference between legitimate job stress and abusive behaviorHow to turn a difficult job experience into a positive career moveFinally, we round out the episode with a shoutout to some people who are taking action to make Hollywood a happier place -- writer-producers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn.
