Baseball and BBQ Episode #134 features author, John Rosengren and pitmasters, Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler John Rosengren is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is Classic Baseball: Timeless Tales, Immortal Moments. His feature articles, profiles, and essays have appeared in more than 100 publications. The following is taken from the "About John" section of his website, https://www.johnrosengren.net/ "I once interviewed a woman shot in the head by hijackers and left for dead on the tarmac. I raced my bike against Greg LeMond in South Africa (and beat him). I played a tennis match against the world's top-ranked wheelchair tennis player (and lost). I channeled a 330-pound Samoan, a retired NFL nose tackle who is gay (Esera Tuaolo, for his memoir). I played softball on snowshoes in the summertime (wood chips spread across the infield). I rapped a base hit off former Twins pitcher Rick Aguilera. I listened to a nurse tell me the story of prying a shotgun shell out of Ernest Hemingway's hand when he was intent on killing himself. I profiled a woman who is a Roman Catholic priest. I attended a powwow with LGBTQ Native Americans. I interviewed a mortician in the room where she embalmed my father. I talked to a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter." The preceding is why we went into this interview knowing we would never be able to discuss all of his accomplishments in one sitting, so the first thing we did was extend an invitation to have him back. Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler are three outstanding pitmasters who have spent years honing their craft and earning well-deserved reputations for being among the best. We were fortunate to meet them at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens, NY during the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit. Each interview is relatively short, but comes with their assurances that they will join us again. The conversations may have been brief, but we still gathered some barbecue tips as well as getting a small glimpse into each of their lives and enjoy their delightful personalities, which were on display all day for the many people who paid to be there and experience these pitmasters signature dishes. We recommend you go to baseballbbq.com https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves. About John Rosengren I once interviewed a woman shot in the head by hijackers and left for dead on the tarmac. I raced my bike against Greg LeMond in South Africa (and beat him). I interviewed a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter. All in a few days' work, stretching back to 1981, when I began freelancing as a senior in high school, same time I got clean and sober. My work has won a couple dozen awards and been nominated for a National Magazine Award and a Pulitzer Prize (but didn't win either of those). Along the way, I have lived in Boise, Boston, Florence, London, Paris, and St. Paul. Today I'm at home in my native Minneapolis with my wife Maria, our two children, and a golden retriever named Maya. About Classic Baseball A collection of iconic, unbelievable, and intimate stories from baseball history that celebrate the enduring impact of the national pastime. Baseball—rooted as it is in tradition and nostalgia—lends itself to the retelling of its timeless tales. So it is with the stories in Classic Baseball, a collection of articles written by award-winning journalist John Rosengren and originally published by Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, Sports on Earth, VICE Sports, and other magazines. These are stories about the game's legends—Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Josh Gibson, Bob Feller, Frank Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Kirby Puckett—and its lesser-knowns with extraordinary stories of their own. They cover some of the game's most famous moments, like Hank Aaron hitting No. 715, and some you've never heard of, like the time the Ku Klux Klan played a game against an all-Black team. Whether it be the story of John Roseboro forgiving Juan Marichal for clubbing him in the head with a bat, Elston Howard breaking down the Yankees' systemic racism to integrate America's team, or the national pastime played on snowshoes during July in a remote Wisconsin town, these are stories meant to be read and read again for their poignancy, their humor, and their celebration of baseball. In our latest edition of our Author Interview Series, John Rosengren discusses his latest work "Classic Baseball", the challenges of researching a more broad project, the stories that make the game interesting, and... La Tortuga?
MPR News director of programming Steph Curtis stopped by with an early winter edition of “The Five,” where she recommends things to read, listen to and experience right now. Watch the documentary show “How To” by John Wilson and the movie “The 40-Year-Old Version” by Radha Blank. I linked these two recommendations based on the fact that both show the gritty, delightful, unexpected side of New York City. In “How To,” Wilson records people on the sidewalks and in the buildings of New York, documentary-style, and reveals the humanity of the city. Likewise, “The 40-Year-Old Version,” tells the story of a struggling playwright trying to make it in the heart of the big city. Read The Pretender by John Rosengren in Atavist Magazine. It’s a deep dive into the mystifying case of Lois Riess, the woman from Blooming Prairie who killed her husband and then killed a stranger and assumed her identity in her attempt to escape arrest. How does a Minnesota grandmother who baked cookies, loved bowling, ran a daycare and doted on her grandchildren turn into a murderer? It’s a great read. Play Ravine, a fun family card game, suitable for all ages. It’s a cooperative game, instead of a competitive one. The premise is there’s been a plane crash, and you have to work together to survive an adjustable number of nights. We’ve been playing it a lot during quarantine at my house. Read the novella “Address Unknown” by Katherine Taylor. Originally published in 1938, this quick read is a series of letters between a Jew in America and his German friend, as the German becomes enraptured with Nazism. Can friendships survive in a divided world? There’s a reason this book has been reprinted 11 times. Listen to this cover of “My Sweet Lord” by acapella group The Belmonts. It’s danceable — which is not something you probably ever thought you’d say about this song. The Belmonts, My Sweet Lord, YouTube A bonus recommendation from Kerri: Listen to the podcast Whirlwind by Tim Weiner, based on his book of the same name. Weiner is a writer who focuses on international espionage, and this podcast is a fantastic explanation of what’s happening today, as Russia seeks to undermine American democracy.

The fight between San Francisco Giants Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher John Roseboro was baseball at its worst. What happened in the coming years would be forgiveness at its best. John Rosengren, author of "The Fight of their Lives", discusses a story that goes well beyond what took place on August 22, 1965 at Candlestick Park. For more on John Rosengren and this highly-acclaimed book, go to fightoftheirlives.net and johnrosengren.net. Photo courtesy of Deadspin Audio courtesy of MLB Network
“John Rosengren extraordinarily depicts how two men long since retired taught the world a valuable lesson -- that it is okay to forgive.” -Andre Dawson, member of the Baseball Hall of Fame The moment is immortalized by an iconic photo: Juan Marichal’s bat poised to strike John Roseboro’s head. But that moment is merely a flashpoint in an extraordinary story about fierce baseball competition and culture, an era of great conflict and change, and two men who were determined to turn an ugly incident from their past into a beautiful friendship. One Sunday in August 1965, when baseball’s bitter rivals, the Giants and Dodgers, vied for the pennant, the national pastime reflected the tensions in society and nearly sullied two men forever. Marichal, a Dominican anxious about his family’s safety during the civil war back home, and Roseboro, a black man living in South Central L.A. shaken by the Watts riots, attacked one another during a fight -- uncharacteristic of either man -- that linked the two forever and haunted both. In The Fight of Their Lives, award-winning author John Rosengren explores the American culture of the time. Through interviews with Roseboro’s surviving family and Marichal himself, contemporary and remembered accounts of teammates like Sandy Koufax and Willie Mays, and dogged research, Rosengren unpacks a story that transcends the game. Listen in... John Rosengren is the award-winning author of eight books, including Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes. His articles have appeared in more than 100 publications, ranging from Reader’s Digest to Sports Illustrated to the Utne Reader.
As sports stories go, the legendary rivalry between the Giants and Dodgers, is one of the best and most enduring. Yet it’s a rivalry that has had it’s had its dark and ugly moments. One of the those moments came a couple of years ago as Giants fan Bryan Stow was attacked and beaten in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium. A sad incident that perhaps reflects the mean spiritedness of our times.Another ugly incident happened back in 1965. It had a better outcome. One where the rivals, Juan Marichal of the SF Giants and John Roseboro of the Dodgers, would turn to violence. A violence that reflected the tensions of the time. Yet it would also turn to forgiveness and redemption. That’s the story that John Rosengren tell in The Fight of Their Lives: How Juan Marichal and John Roseboro Turned Baseball's Ugliest Brawl into a Story of Forgiveness and RedemptionMy conversation with John Rosengren:
“A man does not expire with his last breath. He lives on in memories and the changes he wrought. Hank Greenberg is not dead. So long as his story is told, he remains with us.” --John Rosengren, epilogue to “Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes” Baseball in the 1930's was more than a national pastime; it was a cultural touchstone that galvanized communities and gave a struggling country its heroes despite the woes of the Depression. Hank Greenberg, one of the most exciting sluggers in baseball history, gave the people of Detroit a reason to be proud. But America was facing more than economic hardship. With the Nazis gaining power across Europe, political and social tensions were approaching a boiling point. As one of the few Jewish athletes competing nationally, Greenberg became not only an iconic ballplayer, but also an important and sometimes controversial symbol of Jewish identity and the American immigrant experience. When Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933, they were headed for a dismal fifth-place season finish. The following year, with Hank leading the charge, they were fighting off the New York Yankees for the pennant. As his star ascended, he found himself cheered wherever he went. But there were other noises, too. On and off the field, he met with taunts and anti-Semitic threats. Yet the hardship only drove him on to greater heights, sharing the spotlight with the most legendary sluggers of the day, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Lou Gehrig. Enter the Clubhouse, as award-winning author John Rosengren discussed his new book, Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes. Director Aviva Kempner joined the discussion and screened exciting new extra footage from the DVD of her Peabody Award-winning documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg.
