In the 1950s, a schoolteacher named Carleen Hutchins attempted a revolution in how concert violins are made. In this episode, Craig Eley of the Field Noise podcast tells us how this amateur outsider used 18th century science to disrupt the all-male guild tradition of violin luthiers. Would the myth of the never-equaled Stradivarius violin prove to be true or could a science teacher with a woodshop use an old idea to make new violins better than ever? We also learn about the mysterious beauty of Chladni patterns, the 18th century technique of using tiny particles to reveal how sound moves through resonant objects–the key to Hutchins' merger of art and science. In this episode, we hear the voices of: Quincy Whitney, Carleen Hutchins biographer and a former arts reporter for the Boston Globe. Myles Jackson, a professor of the history of science at Princeton. Joseph Curtin, a MacArthur-award winning violin maker. Sam Zygmuntowicz, an extremely renowned violin maker and creator of Strad3D. Carleen Hutchins herself.   You can subscribe to Craig Eley's Field Noise podcast to hear the original version of this story. This episode was edited by Craig Eley and Mack Hagood. In this week's episode of “Tuesday Night Detectives” on Vintage Classic Radio, we take a stroll down memory lane with two gripping tales of mystery and intrigue. First, we delve into the shadowy world of “Richard Diamond, Private Detective” with the episode “The George Lexington Murder,” originally aired on September 13th, 1950. In this captivating story, the suave and witty Richard Diamond, voiced by Dick Powell, finds himself entangled in a labyrinth of lies and murder after the wealthy George Lexington is found dead. As Diamond navigates through the high society's underbelly and secret pasts, he is aided by his sharp instincts and the occasional help from the police force, including his friend Lieutenant Walt Levinson. Helen Asher, Diamond's sophisticated girlfriend, also makes an appearance, providing a touch of romance amidst the suspense. Following this, we present “Mr. And Mrs. North” in the episode titled “Die Hard,” which first graced the airwaves on September 8th, 1953. This episode sees the charming and adventurous married duo, Jerry and Pamela North, embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse when they encounter a seemingly straightforward case that quickly spirals into a deadly pursuit. The Norths, known for stumbling upon mysteries in their everyday New York City life, demonstrate their knack for solving crimes through wit and partnership. The chemistry between the leads, played by Alice Frost and Joseph Curtin, adds a delightful spark to the thrilling narrative. Join us as we revisit these classic tales of deduction, where danger lurks around every corner and nothing is as it seems. Whether it's the sleek streets of the city with Richard Diamond or the intriguing complexities faced by Mr. And Mrs. North, our episode is a homage to the golden age of radio detective shows, filled with suspense, mystery, and the enduring charm of sleuthing couples.

Mr. and Mrs. North are fictional American amateur detectives. Created by Frances and Richard Lockridge, the couple was featured in a series of 26 Mr. and Mrs. North novels, a Broadway play, a motion picture and several radio and television series. Mr. and Mrs. North was a radio mystery series that aired on NBC and CBS from 1942 to 1954. Alice Frost and Joseph Curtin had the title roles when the series began in 1942. The characters, publisher Jerry North and his wife Pam, lived in Greenwich Village at 24 St. Anne's Flat. They were not professional detectives but simply an ordinary couple who stumbled across a murder or two every week for 12 years. The radio program eventually reached nearly 20 million listeners. In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. North received the first Best Radio Drama Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America (in a tie with CBS's The Adventures of Ellery Queen). The program, which was broadcast once in 1941 and continuously from December 1942 through December 1946 on NBC Radio (for Woodbury Soap), and from July 1947 to April 1955 on CBS Radio (for Colgate-Palmolive and, later, Adler sewing machines), featured Carl Eastman (1941), Joseph Curtin (1942–53) and Richard Denning (1953–55) as Jerry North. Pam North was played by Peggy Conklin (1941), Alice Frost (1942–53) and Barbara Britton (1953–55).

Enjoy two free detective episodes of Mr. & Mrs. North w/ Richard Denning and Barbara Britton A) 6/9/53 Wheel of Chance B) 3/30/54 Touch of Death Created by Frances and Richard Lockridge, Mr. & Mrs. North were fictional amateur detectives appearing in dozens of novels (1936-63), a Broadway play, a motion picture and several radio and television series. The Norths were not professional detectives, but simply a well-to-do New York couple who stumbled across a murder or two every week (for 12 years) and felt compelled to solve the crimes. A 1942 MGM movie starred William Post, Jr. and George Burns' wife, Gracie Allen. That same year, the adventures of Mr. and Mrs. North debuted on radio and was soon generating top ratings with a weekly listenership of 20-million fans. By 1946, the radio series received the Edgar Award of excellence from the Mystery Writers of America (in a tie with CBS's The Adventures of Ellery Queen). Joseph Curtin and Alice Frost originally voiced the roles of Jerry and Pam North on radio. Later, Richard Denning and Barbara Britton were cast, staying on for its successful transition to TV. The TV series was seen on CBS in 1952 and 1953 and on NBC in 1954. The characters were later resurrected, in spirit, with ABC's Hart to Hart the 1979 through 1984 crime drama about a wealthy husband (Robert Wagner) and wife (Stefanie Powers).

It was supposed to be the climate change election. It hasn't turned out that way so far, even if it is a sign of progress that all the parties have detailed climate proposals in their manifestos, says Joseph Curtin, a climate change expert working in the NGO sector and a member of the Climate Change Advisory Council. But that doesn't mean you should take the figures in the manifestos too seriously. Joe talks to Hugh and Harry McGee about some of those proposed policies, which parties are most ambitious, and the best way to implement carbon tax.

We also learn about the mysterious beauty of Chladni patterns, the 18th century technique of using tiny particles to reveal how sound moves through resonant objects--the key to Hutchins' merger of art and science. In this episode, we hear the voices of:Quincy Whitney,  Carleen Hutchins biographer and a former arts reporter for the Boston Globe.Myles Jackson, a professor of the history of science at Princeton.Joseph Curtin, a MacArthur-award winning violin maker.Sam Zygmuntowicz, an extremely renowned violin maker and creator of Strad3D.Carleen Hutchins herself. You can subscribe to Craig Eley's Field Noise podcast to hear the original version of this story. This episode was edited by Craig Eley and Mack Hagood. Music is by Blue Dot Sessions and Marc Bianchi. The archival interview clips of Carleen Hutchins were provided by filmmaker James Schneider. The interview with Quincy Whitney was recorded by Andrew Parrella at New Hampshire Public Radio. Transcript [ominous music plays][CRIS CHEEK]This…is…Phantom Power.[MACK HAGOOD]Episode 14.[CRIS]Resident grains.[a whirring sound plays, then a string being plucked][CARLEEN HUTCHINS]What I’m interested in now is to see what the waves that are traveling through the woods are like. And those are the things that I think are making a lot of difference in the way, energy and the waves of energy can go through the wood itself. And wood is all sorts of sort of discontinuity, if you will, that will make the energy have to slow down or go around something, it’s a little bit like a river flowing. And if you put some rocks on the edge of a river, you’ll change the whole flow of the river downstream. Think that’s what’s happening in violins. There are certain ways that those blockages, the discontinuity can be worked out. And that’s the kind of thing I’m looking for us to see what happens. Because some of the beautiful issues that I’ve been working with and testing show that there’s a good deal of this sort of thing going on.[CRAIG ELEY]Well, let’s just back up a little bit. There’s a line of thought, which is that every object vibrates according to its nature.[A more persistent humming, then fades out][MACK]Welcome to another episode of Phantom Power. I’m Mack Hagood.[CRIS]And I’m cris cheek.[MACK]Today we have the pleasure to speak with one of our collaborators, Craig Eley. Craig is a producer on Phantom Power. And he’s also the producer of his own podcast, a podcast called Field Noise. Hi, Craig. [CRAIG]Hey, guys. Thanks for having me.[CRIS]Yeah, thanks for being with us.[MACK]Alright, so Craig, we’re doing a little bit of a swap-a-roo this week. We’re going to hear basically an episode of your podcast Field Noise. Do you want to tell us a little bit about your show?[CRAIG]Yeah, you know, the idea has always revolved around my own research interests: sound studies, history of technology, environmental history, and just the sort of relationship between sound and technology in the environment. You know, when I finished graduate school, I actually did do a research postdoc for a year, but then I ended up working in public radio. And I’m trying to incorporate some of my own research, but also just do some original reporting and just kind of follow my ears as it were for some stories that I’m that I’m interested in trying to tell.[MACK]So today, you’re bringing us an episode of Field Noise that is about an outsider who revolutionized the field that she entered.[CRAIG]That’s absolutely right.

A hammer tap to the bridge — light as a dried pea — helps Curtin capture an acoustic instrument’s sound signature. In music, everything seems to have another digital life. Pianists can play with different voicings on an electric keyboard. Guitarists can filter their instrument’s signal through a pedal or amp to create various effects. Why shouldn’t violinists be able to digitally harness the sound of a Stradivarius? For starters, it takes an incredible feat of engineering to make an authentic-sounding digital violin. Radio reporter (and violinist!) David Schulman takes us to visit a top violinmaker who has been working with a physicist and two engineers to create a prototype digital violin. Inside the Episode: Scientists say the violin is one of the hardest instruments to mimic. But MacArthur Award-winning violin maker Joseph Curtin has been working for several years with physicist Gabi Weinreich, along with sound engineer John Bell and industrial designer Alex Sobolev, to create a digital violin. They say its sound will be hard to tell from a recording of a Strad. Data from 12 different locations let violinmaker Joseph Curtin digitize a violin’s sonic fingerprint. Joseph Curtin and Alex Sobolev with prototypes of the digital violin Joseph Curtin’s workbench, where he carves, builds and varnishes his acoustic instruments. Closeup of some of the pigments and syses used in varnishes for finishing acoustic instruments. Convolution Reverb samples: David Schulman plays an acoustic violin by Joseph Curtin in his workshop in Ann Arbor, Michigan The same audio, played through a digital sound map of LA’s Disney Hall captured by sound designer Peter Steinbach The same audio, played through a digital sound map of Alcatraz prison, captured by sound designer Peter Steinbach The same audio, played through a digital sound map of Egypt’s Giza Pyramid captured by sound designer Peter Steinbach — Bonus — Meet David Schulman, the reporter of this story: PRX was able to ask producer/reporter David Schulman about his experience making this audio story. He says, “The chance to do this piece brought together several things I am deeply fascinated by — music, violins, sound-rich audio storytelling, and the nature of creativity & discovery.” Something that didn’t make the final cut of the story, which sheds more light on why a digital Stradivarius is so difficult to engineer, is “Weinreich’s research has shown that a violin’s sound is in fact deeply varied in the spatial dimension, and that, with each note, the physical power and direction of the overtones changes widely  — one likely reason why it’s hard to actually record an acoustic violin well.” On convolution, the name of the technology developed for the digital Strad, David says, “With it’s potential for alternate aural realities, [convolution] is a richly metaphorical area for scientists, artists and storytellers […] Imagine a situation in which  convolution impulse maps are the most vivid documentation remaining of a ransacked temple, or a lost Stradivarius.” While he was gathering tape and doing interviews, David tells us that he was even able to play some of Curtin’s instruments, an added bonus for someone who is a musician on top of being a radio producer. Still, such an idyllic experience still was not without its challenges: “The central challenge of the piece involved using demos to link several rich — though rather technical — ideas, and to arrive at a final comparison where you’d hear the digital Strad and an actual Strad, side by side.” — This episode was reported and produced by David Schulman in 2013 for PRX’S STEM Story Project. It was hosted for this episode of Transistor by Genevieve Sponsler and mixed by Erika Lantz. Photos: David Schulman
