Anyone who's anyone in the Middle Ages needs their own coat of arms, but it's not as simple as just throwing some snazzy shapes and cool animals on a shield and calling it a day. Join Olivia and Aran as they walk you through how to make your very own authentically (or inauthentically) medieval coat of arms, as well as a little bit of background on how and why these cool emblems became a quintessential part of medieval visual communication. And how complex, real-world examples, if framed the right way, can be valuable in helping our kids become resilient. Also, the guys each take a deep breath and leap into another installment of the fan-favorite segment, Confessions.  [This is part one of a two-part interview.]Episode 38 is Part 2 of a two-part episode featuring guest Patrick Coleman, a father of two and journalist who serves as the Parenting Editor for Fatherly. The episode opens with a comedy of errors as hosts Adam and Marc struggle to nail their timing. Conor Tallon spoke to Curator Michael Waldron about a very unusual and hard to describework this week! It's a tale of heraldry, family, and decorative arts with this curious carved object that depicts the family crest of a noted family once prominent in Cork and Waterford. The Penrose family crest consists of an escutcheon or shield emblazoned with three bends (diagonal bars) that signify protection. Each of these contain three roses, which may denote grace or faith. The shield is set on an oval cartouche decorated with scroll and tassels, which in turn is surmounted by a trout or salmon naiant (in a horizontal position). The inclusion of the fish on this family crest relates to a legend regarding the origins of the Penroses at their traditional seat of Loe Pool in Cornwall. (The family was first documented here in 1281!) There is a long history of connection between Cornwall and the south coast of Ireland, particularly when it comes to fisheries. Today, ‘The Loe' – or An Logh in Cornish – is the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall and is administered by The National Trust.Born in 1736, the businessman Cooper Penrose was from the third generation of the Irish branch of the family. Having moved to Cork in 1763, he married Elizabeth Dennis, a fellow Quaker who was the daughter of his business partner. Together they lived at Woodhill on Lover's Walk and amassed a renowned art collection.Fun Fact: among other interests, the Penroses founded glass companies in Cork and Waterford, one of which eventually became the celebrated Waterford Crystal.Presented to the collection twelve years ago, this historic objectis displayed in our eighteenth-century Penrose Rooms (Floor 1) along with paintings, silverware, porcelain, furniture, and books from the period. --Made of salt-glazed stoneware, in Frechen, Germany, ca. 1605 --Found at James Fort, Jamestown, Virginia --Held in Collection of Historic Jamestowne In some ways, this Bartmann (or "Bearded Man") stoneware beer jug with an effigy of a jovial fat man and coats of arms is typical of the wares that poured our of Germany in the 1600s, several of which were found in the long-lost ruins of James Fort, the first English fortress at Jamestown. On the other hand, a peculiar feature of its decorative crest suggests possible hidden meanings, hinting at secret Catholic sympathies threatening England's first serious effort to colonize the New World. Today on Filmmaker Freedom, an in-depth interview with Clara Lehmann and Jonathan Lacocque. Clara and Jonathan are the co-founders of Coat of Arms, a full service production and post studio that's created work for some of the biggest companies on earth. Think Google, Microsoft, Land Rover, Marriott, WebMD, and way more. They also take their passion projects very seriously. They've made short animated films and documentaries. Oh, and they're married to one another. Anyhow, over the course of this wide-ranging interview, we talk about the mechanics of building a successful production company, working directly with large corporate clients without having to go through an ad agency, pursuing passion projects in the midst of a running a business, creating work that you can be proud of, and quite a bit more. It's a damn good conversation, and I hope you dig it. We are celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday this week by taking a look at how Shakespeare became a gentleman. One of the ways William Shakespeare achieved the status of a gentleman was in the procurement of the family Coat of Arms. This process was something of a mystery because history shows us that Shakespeare’s father had been eligible for a coat of arms, but never received it. Later, his son William would successfully acquire the arms for the family, presumably a source of pride for his father, as well as a firm establishment of respect and status in the community. This week we are happy to welcome back to the show for his second time as a guest here at That Shakespeare Life, the distinguished Dr. Paul Edmondson, Head of Research and Knowledge at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who joins us to be our guide into the history of Shakespeare’s coat of arms, heraldry, and the Shakespeare family.

Our latest episode has been a long time coming but we are thrilled to be back on track. In our latest episode of Simplicity Talks, we chat with Mike Scott, head of creative for Siegel+Gale in Europe, and Will Bosanko, our brand associate, on the challenges and opportunities in education in the face of ballooning student debt and ever rising levels of student dissatisfaction with what they are getting for their money. We explore the shift in how students - the customer - are considering which institutions to put their money on and why, the role that history and legacy has in a world dominated by flexible programmes and multiple sources of learning, and ultimately the role brand can play to guide both established and challenger institutions to develop holistic, authentic and engaging experiences in every student touchpoint.
