The Cincinnati Bengals created salary cap space this week by restructuring quarterback Joe Burrow's contract, a move that longtime observers say reflects an unusually aggressive offseason for the franchise. According to multiple reports, the restructuring frees up approximately $10 million in salary cap space and comes after the Bengals acquired All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence in a blockbuster trade. The move is notable because Cincinnati has historically avoided restructuring contracts to push salary cap charges into future seasons. “I think one of the biggest things for me, quite frankly, is that it shows this continues to be an atypical offseason,” Local 12 digital sports columnist and editor Richard Skinner said to Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media. “From trading for Dexter Lawrence to overspending at a couple of positions of need, it continues that trend.” While some of the newly created cap space helps account for Lawrence's contract, Skinner said the move also gives the Bengals flexibility to address other roster needs, including adding a veteran linebacker or offensive tackle. The restructuring came just minutes before the Bengals announced the signing of second-round draft pick Cashius Howell, officially putting all seven members of the team's 2026 draft class under contract. Unlike a pay cut, a restructuring converts salary into a signing bonus that can be spread across future years of the contract. “They did the best of both worlds,” Skinner said. “It gives you the flexibility to still add to the roster today without just kicking the can way down the road.” Petraglia noted the Bengals could have freed up nearly twice as much cap space but chose a more measured approach. “By converting only enough salary to free up the $10 million, I think the Bengals showed a layer of restraint,” Petraglia said. “It's the best of both worlds for the Bengals in this particular case.” The discussion also highlighted several emerging storylines from organized team activities. One is veteran safety Kyle Dugger, who joined Cincinnati after stops with New England and Pittsburgh. Skinner described Dugger as a potentially valuable veteran presence and a candidate to contribute in defensive packages featuring three safeties. The pair also discussed rookie linebacker Boye Mafe, whose versatility could allow defensive coordinator Al Golden to deploy more varied fronts featuring players who can rush the passer or drop into coverage. Both agreed that Lawrence remains one of the most intriguing additions heading into training camp. “I cannot wait to see Dexter Lawrence line up against somebody else,” Skinner said. “He's just going to overwhelm some people at times.” Mandatory minicamp begins next week, when coaches and media will get a clearer picture of how the Bengals' revamped roster fits together heading into the 2026 season.

Solomon Wilcots breaks down five reasons to be fully optimistic about the 2026 Bengals, starting with the front office's $132.7 million free agency haul headlined by trading a top-ten pick for Dexter Lawrence, a move without precedent in Cincinnati history. He credits Zach Taylor's offense for five straight top-ten seasons in scoring and efficiency, arguing the three-year playoff drought was purely a defense problem, and praises Joe Burrow as a generational talent just 47 TDs from breaking Andy Dalton's all-time franchise record. The episode's most passionate stretch is Solomon declaring Ja'Marr Chase the greatest receiver in Bengals history, above every historic predecessor. He closes on a defensive front he counts as ten deep, anchored by Lawrence, BJ Hill, Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, and new safety Kyle Dugger. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. While the Bengals did not address linebacker this offseason, they filled most other needs through trades, free agency and the NFL Draft. After trading for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and signing free agent defensive end Boye Mafe and free agent defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, they selected defensive end Cashius Howell in the second round and added Navy defensive tackle Landon Robinson in the seventh round. They drafted 6-foot-4 cornerback Tacario Davis in the third round to add depth at outside cornerback, potentially allowing Dax Hill to shift back inside while providing some future insurance if the team can't extend Hill or cornerback DJ Turner. They desperately needed to add offensive line depth and did so by taking center Connor Lew in the fourth round, who dropped to that round only because he is coming off knee surgery, although he is expected to be cleared well in advance of the start of training camp. Then in the sixth round the Bengals selected St. Xavier High School grad Brian Parker II, who can potentially play all five offensive line positions. They were hoping to add a wide receiver in the draft who could compete with Andrei Iosivas for snaps at No. 3 wide receiver and took 6-foot-5, 218-pound Colbie Young with a second fourth-round pick they added when they dealt the No. 110 overall pick and No. 199 overall pick to the New York Jets for the No. 128 pick (Lew) and No. 140 pick, which they used on Young. Young's traits are more impressive than his college production, but he has a high ceiling. That seemed to be the case with almost each of their seven draft picks. "They all have a lot of upside," said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. "That's the cleanest way I can say it. They are all really talented players. We brought them in here because we see a high upside with all those guys. Excited about the whole group." That includes tight end Jack Endries, who was taken with the first of two seventh-round picks. He was projected as a fourth-round pick, but fell for unknown reasons and told reporters he would make teams that passed on him, "(blanking) pay." It has been clear this offseason that the Bengals were trying to make the defensive line a major team strength and it is really deep. The potential starters at ends are Mafe and 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy, with 2025 first-round pick Shemar Stewart and Howell competing for snaps and playing at worst in a rotational role. Lawrence filled a huge need at nose tackle and will probably make TJ Slaton a salary cap cut, while the tackles opposite Lawrence are veteran BJ Hill and Allen with 2024 second-round pick Kris Jenkins also in the mix. The Bengals also this offseason signed veteran safeties Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger and cornerback Ja'Sir Taylor to compete with Jalen Davis at slot corner. "From a talent standpoint, we're in a really good place," said Taylor. "From a leadership standpoint, we're in a really good place. Now, you have to actually go do the work. It's fun to talk about this stuff in the offseason. This is where we are up to this point. There's no work we could have really done on the field or anything like that, or from a chemistry standpoint. Now, it's up to the players and coaches to put it all together. That's going to require a lot of work on the field, in the locker room, off the field, but I'm excited about the group that we're going to go do it with." The one thing the Bengals haven't done this offseason is address linebacker and for now seem ready to move forward with second-year players Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter, who both started as rookies and struggled. Behind them is veteran Oren Burks, who has primarily been a backup and special teams player in his career and very little proven talent. Taylor said it's possible the team still might sign a veteran free agent with starting experience. "We'll have those conversations now that the draft is over," Taylor said. "It's one of those situations where there is value at other positions that we didn't want to pass up. Linebackers before you got a chance to get the next guy that you would have wanted. That's the way the draft always goes. That's how free agency goes sometimes. We do have lot of belief in the room that we have so those guys will continue to compete and if we do something after the draft that remains to be seen." Bengals Overall Grade: A-minus The Skinny: While not addressing linebacker seems egregious they did get a lot of value from most of their picks and even the ones they didn't - like Davis and Young - have measurables and high ceilings. The Bengals filled some key needs and added some possible starting caliber players for years to come, so it was hard not to be impressed with what they did.

Or could one of those guys offer value over him as he competes with Mason Rudolph and -- possibly -- Aaron Rodgers for positioning on new coach Mike McCarthy's depth chart? Where's the ideal spot on the depth chart for Howard if GM Omar Khan gets his offseason moves right? And why do so many fans have such resolute faith in the former sixth-round pick? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders Khan's trade options this offseason. How seriously should he consider moving on from Jalen Ramsey, given the corner/safety's hefty cap hit? Is he worthy of making the money Minkah Fitzpatrick did at the position? Could the team get by with names like DeShon Elliott, Chuck Clark, Jabrill Peppers and Kyle Dugger in that spot? Or should it consider drafting a safety like Caleb Downs or Bud Clark to fill the void at a cheaper price? The later, the guys ponder how to handle the Steelers' array of draft picks. Should Khan hold onto all 12 with the goal of building his team's depth? Or should he trade up, even if it's not for a QB? November 19, 2025 - Season 16, Episode 52 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right into talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers making a few transactions since our last show with one of those being the signing of QB/WR John Rhys Plumlee back to the practice squad on Tuesday. We talk about why Plumlee was likely added to the practice squad in addition to discussing why five other players were brough in for tryouts on Tuesday. Alex and I then go over the list of injured players the Steelers have heading into Week 12 with QB Aaron Rodgers obviously being our main focus due to a fracture of some kind in his left wrist. We discuss what all HC Mike Tomlin had to say on Tuesday about Rodgers possibly playing on Sunday against the Chicago Bears and whether our gut feelings tell us when it comes to that possibly happening. Should the Steelers strongly consider starting QB Mason Rudolph against the Bears regardless of what transpires this week with Rodgers? Alex and I attack that question in this show and also talk about the possibility of Rodgers being the backup on Sunday against the Bears. We also talk a little about rookie QB Will Howard possibly getting a few first-team reps this week with Rodgers slowed by injury. As usual, Alex and I parse all of the notable talking points that came out of Tomlin Tuesday. We discuss what Tomlin had to say about playing time on Sunday for CB Darius Slay and CB James Pierre and if indeed the former will wind up resuming as the starter against the Bears if he clears concussion protocol this week. We discuss what playing time on Sunday might and should look like on Sunday against the Bears when it comes to both Slay and Pierre. Tomlin talked some about TE Darnell Washington and his usage in the offense on Tuesday, so we make sure to dive a bit deeper into those comments. We also talk about what Tomlin had to say about the reaction S Jalen Ramsey had to Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase spitting on him in the second half of the Week 11 Sunday game at Acrisure Stadium. With Chase having his one-game suspension upheld on Tuesday as part of his appeal process, Alex and I address what should happen to every player that spits on another player during a game and how the NFL needs to take a more defined punishment stance moving forward. With the All-22 tape from the Steelers' Sunday home win against the Bengals now fully digested by us, Alex and I discuss the good, bad and ugly that we uncovered from that. We start with the defense and go over how that unit effectively did against the pass on Sunday and the changes that we have seen schematically the last several weeks with Ramsey and Kyle Dugger now manning the two safety positions. We also discuss the three outside linebacker packages the Steelers used on Sunday against the Bengals and how effective that was. After talking about the defensive play on Sunday, Alex and I move on to talk some about what we saw from the Steelers offense on the all-22 tape from the game against the Bengals. We were both less enthused when it came to that side of the football and we explain why. We also wonder if Rudolph might try to push the football down the field more on Sunday against the Bears should he indeed get the start in that contest over the injured Rodgers. Alex and I mix in quite a few tape observations during this show and we make sure to discuss the recent play of several different players as well. Alex previews a tape study that he is working on when it comes to Steelers DT Keeanu Benton as well. This 110-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted and we wrap things up by answering several emails we received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the play of safeties Kyle Dugger and Jalen Ramsey, who have stabilized the team's secondary since their installment as starters, with Dugger coming over in a trade from the New England Patriots and Ramsey moving from cornerback to free safety. Against the Cincinnati Bengals the second time around, the Pittsburgh secondary did much better facing Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins and the play of the safeties was a big part of it. On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo react to the NFL Week 11 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. Can Mason Rudolph handle the job of starting QB for OC Arthur Smith if he's forced to play more amid Aaron Rodgers' injury? How did his connection with receivers including DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Darnell Washington, Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth look? And what's the latest we know about Rodgers' injury that kept him out of the second half Sunday? Our duo tackles those questions, then pivots to the defense. Has coach Mike Tomlin solved the unit's biggest problem? Why were Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., Kyle Dugger and James Pierre able to have so much success against Joe Flacco, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins compared to a month ago, when that trio dominated the defense in Cincinnati? Why not making any moves should be considered a blown opportunity for the 2025 Pats? Then, the team may be ahead of schedule and riding the year with house money may be an optimistic view, but the Pats still have tons of money and draft picks they could've used to add. And, without any additions and more subtractions with the departures of Keion White and Kyle Dugger, the razor thin margin with their depth just got extra razor thin.

November 3, 2025 - Season 16, Episode 45 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right into our overarching thoughts on the Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 9 Sunday home win against the Indianapolis Colts. In our weekly housekeeping portion of this Monday show, which is sponsored by the fine folks at TouringPlans.com, Alex and I talk about the Sunday inactive list, the few injuries sustained by the Steelers in their 27-20 win against the Colts, and the several transactions the team has made since our Friday show. The Steelers defense played extremely well on Sunday against the Colts as they rebounded following the unit's poor Week 8 showing against the Green Bay Packers. Because of that stellar performance by that unit against the Colts, Alex and I start on that side of the football. Alex and I go over the schematic and personnel changes the Steelers made on defense on Sunday against the Colts that resulted in the unit registering numerous takeaways and five sacks of Colts QB Daniel Jones. We discuss the several big plays made by the defense on Sunday and go over some key stats when it comes to the scheme used. While the Steelers defense was far from perfect on Sunday, the good clearly made a difference in the game. Will the Steelers continue to use Jalen Ramsey and Kyle Dugger as their two starting safeties? We discuss that possibility and go over several snap counts on that side of the football. After thoroughly breaking down the play of the Steelers' defense on Sunday, Alex and I then discuss the good, bad, and ugly from the offense against the Colts. That unit was able to produce 24 points off of turnovers and even without registering any explosive plays of 20 yards or longer. We talk about how the offense was clunky overall on Sunday but managed to produce three touchdowns just the same. WR Roman Wilson fumbled away the football late in Sunday's game, so we discuss that play. We also discuss some key metrics related to the play of Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers against the Colts. We make sure to highlight the play of TE Darnell Washington, WR Calvin Austin III , and RB Kenneth Gainwell during this show. The Steelers special team units performed well on Sunday, so Alex and I discuss the contributions in that phase of the game. We also break down the brilliant decision that special teams coordinator Danny Smith made in the second half as part of a kickoff. Ramsey held court with the team on Saturday night, according to Rodgers, so we discuss that little tidbit later in this show. With the annual NFL trade deadline now upon us, Alex and I look at the possibility and probability related to the Steelers trading for a wide receiver. Could Washington Commanders WR Deebo Samuel be an underrated trade option for the Steelers? What other positions might the Steelers consider trading for other than wide receiver? We attempt to answer those questions later in this show. Did the Steelers win convincing enough on Sunday? Alex and I discuss that flawed question and narrative making the rounds on Monday morning. This 103-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted and we wrap things up by answering several emails we received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices.
