On People of Note this week, Rodney Trudgeon will be talking to the conductor and pianist Kamal Khan who is In Cape Town to conduct Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor for Cape Town Opera. Kamal enjoys an international career as a teacher and conductor and he has worked with most of the world's leading opera singers at most of the world's leading opera houses. He was also head of Opera at UCT for many year. Lucia opens at the Artscape Opera house on Friday 14 June.

Dan and Tom talk with Matt Sherman about the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Las Vegas and OCTOPUSSY Utah filming locations. Besides being a James Bond expert, Matt Sherman leads tours to many different James Bond filming locations – check his website https://bondfanevents.com/. In this episode, we discuss what we experienced on Matt's tour of two relatively close filming location areas for two movies, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (DAF) and OCTOPUSSY.  Much of DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was filmed in and around Las Vegas, Nevada in the U.S. For instance, the casinos, the desert, the mortuary, the car chase and more are all there. Surprisingly, if you take a 2-hour drive from Las Vegas into southwestern Utah, you'll end up in some key locations from OCTOPUSSY. Much of the OCTOPUSSY pre-title sequence was filmed in this stunningly beautiful part of the U.S. Some of the scenes toward the end of the movie were filmed here as well. Some of the filming location questions we answer are: DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER LAS VEGAS What airport did James Bond arrive in when he came to Las Vegas? How many locations were used when Plenty O'Toole was tossed from the hotel window? Where is the location of the parking lot from the car chase? The Sam Raimi-directed MCU flick has officially crossed $900 million at the worldwide box office.    Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness has earned an estimated $909.4 million as of Sunday. $388.7 million of the total is from the domestic box office while $520.7 million comes from the international box office. The movie managed to hit $900 million after five weekends without ever being released in China or Russia.   Deadpool 3 Writers Reassure Fans That Wade Wilson Won't Be 'Disney-fied' https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-3-writers-wade-wilson-disneyfied/ Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick promise fans the Wade Wilson they know and love isn't getting the Disney treatment.   The pair spoke to The Playlist and were asked about the story-based issues and concerns that have arisen from the merger of 21st Century Fox and Disney. Reese answered, "It was Fox, all these different people, and now it's not those people anymore. It's these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel's been incredibly supportive." Reese continued, "They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It's not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, 'you know, that's too far.'" That could happen, but to this point, it's been nothing but support."   On what the support they have received from Marvel Studios actually looks like, Reese said, “It's been nothing but, 'How can we help you?' ‘What from our universe would you like to use? So they're awesome, and now it's up to us to come through and justify that faith."   Marvel's Thunderbolts Movie Adds Jake Schreier as Director https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-thunderbolts-movie-jake-schreier-director/   The Marvel Cinematic Universe's long-gestating Thunderbolts project is finally on its way to becoming a reality. On Thursday, reports indicated that Jake Schreier has been tapped to direct an upcoming Thunderbolts movie, with Black Widow's Eric Pearson set to write the script and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige set to produce.   It is unclear at this point who could make up the cast of Thunderbolts, a team that traditionally consists of supervillains and antiheroes going on missions, initially to convince the general public that they are operating as heroes. The first comic incarnation of the team was led by Baron Zemo, with other members including Songbird, Moonstone, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent, Crossbones, Abomination, Ghost, and more. The team gets its namesake from General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), but following Hurt's passing earlier this year, it's anyone's guess as to how that aspect of the storyline could be handled. Hello dear listeners! Are you sometimes convinced that Sir Roger's James Bond and Mr. White from CR, QOS, and SP are the hosts of the James Bond Complex? The familiar, nefarious tone when they proclaim that they have people everywhere. The amusing double-entendres and soothing voices to keep the proceedings light and engaging. The unquestionable professionalism with which they go about the analysis of the Fleming novels, the films, and everything in between. You'd earn top marks, dear listeners. Except they're fake. No, it's just Mathieu and Edgar entering the recording studio, week and week out, to deliver thorough commentary on the James Bond phenomenon. As you may have guessed, this week the lads crack open 1983's Octopussy. A rather important film in the franchise, given the same year's non-official rival 007 picture starring, oh, what was his name again? Oh right, Sean Connery. As was typical of the 80s Bonds, OP is supported by a fairly complex plot, so Matt and Edgar have a lot to wade through. How decadent is the West? Mirror mirror on the wall, Is Louis Jordain's Kamal Khan the slimiest of them all? How much can one pack into a horse's *ss? How easy is it to swap Fabergé eggs at an auction at Sotherby's (Answer: incredibly)? Is there maximum age for Moore's Bond at which women left and right stop fantasizing about him? Shrouded in political expediency, hampered by internal power struggles, international espionage and doublespeak that makes Washington's spin doctors proud, Kamal's mission is a nightmare of rampant militant fundamentalism that threatens to choke and take Pakistan hostage. For him, the fight is not just for freedom, but the survival of a nation. Excerpt Standing in the hall of the abandoned warehouse, blood dripped from his body, leaving a trail on the grimy floor. A body was slumped in the chair in the middle of the hall with a singular light hanging above, illuminating a small radius around it. Another lay in the doorway propping the door open. The fight inside had been more than expected from the three days he spent surveying the warehouse. By his count, there should not have been more than five men both inside and out. Instead, he had found almost seven men around the facility. They had prepared well for his arrival. On his approach, he saw one man guarding the entrance. There were usually two… where’s the other one? Kamal shook off the thought and sized up his enemy, noting that he was a scrawny soldier that didn’t fill his uniform. He ducked into the shadows where he could use the darkness against the soldier, catching him by surprise. He rushed the guard, knocking him to the ground before he could set himself or draw his weapon. With a quick strike to the head, the first guard was neutralized. Before he could get up, he heard the door to the warehouse open. Jumping to his feet, Kamal saw the second guard emerge, finding Kamal hovering over his partner’s incapacitated body. The guard, surprisingly, dropped his AK-47 and rushed at Kamal, driving him into the concrete wall of the warehouse with a shoulder block. As he pulled back from Kamal, he landed two solid right crosses to his jaw stunning Kamal and giving himself time to set for the fight. Kamal pulled himself up from one knee, gasping for air and taking the time to assess his opponent. The guard didn’t wait for Kamal to position himself and struck again with a swift kick to his midriff, bring the taste of blood to Kamal’s mouth. Oh, that is just unacceptable. Kamal spat the blood onto the ground and spun around, taking the guard’s legs out with a vicious kick to his knees. As the guard hit the ground, Kamal launched himself onto him, grabbing his neck in a chokehold. The guard threw elbows behind him, and kicked helplessly in the air as Kamal increased the pressure on his throat. Within minutes, his body stopped fighting and he was down. Kamal stood, spitting a few times to clear the blood that had filled his mouth, finally using the sleeve of his shirt to wipe the remaining away. He smirked, admiring his work. Not as tough as he looked. Standing over both bodies, his plan rapidly changed. Grabbing the second guard by the legs, he drag
