Co-directors of the short film, The Cold, Jay Sutherland and Anthony (AJ) Davies, discuss filmmaking on a micro-budget. Anthony and Jay recount the details of that process; the challenges they faced and how they overcame them; from filming in a foreign country, to the meticulous and often laborious visual effects and editing process, on an ever-changing, constantly tight, budget. In spite of all of the challenges and difficulties, the end-product was a film which was accepted at numerous international film-festivals, received a High Commendation, and has acted as a stepping-stone for some interesting projects. Hopefully this podcast will be interesting to young and experienced film-makers alike; those who might stand to learn something, and those who simply enjoy listening to filmmakers regale tales of an unusual film-making process. The Cold was co-directed by AJ Davies and Jay Sutherland, written by the Bram Stoker award-winning novelist, Kealan Patrick Burke, and starred Kacey Clarke (of Resident Evil: Afterlife and The Inbetweeners) alongside Jay. The new dark thriller novel by Eric Shapiro.Dennis Fordham has it all: the wife, the kids, the established small business. And yet...he's slipping. Something's changing in his mindset. He's regretting all the chances that he never took. And he's getting a bad itch to visit illicit massage parlors. Even worse: he’s also starting to talk kind of funny. Only it's not a joke— his strange words terrify his dental hygienist, who tells his whole Northern California community that he harassed her. When Dennis tries to push back, he's met with intense resistance. Which is when his troubling thoughts turn into violent ones...A story of red rage, red madness, and a bright red, all-American, hyper-masculine psycho, RED DENNIS gives us a man on the edge, then invites us to follow him down into the abyss."To me, Shapiro is the next Philip K. Dick. He's got the same intelligent voice, vivid characterization, and the absolutely crucial awareness of all that is wrong with humankind."--Kealan Patrick Burke, author of CURRENCY OF SOULS"I first read Eric Shapiro in 2005, when his novella IT'S ONLY TEMPORARY made me think, This guy is gooooooooood. Since then, I've read everything he's put out and he hasn't let me down yet. Nobody does 'WTF?!' better, but Eric's work is also smart, richly observed, and oh-so-human. This week we talk about Greg Lamberson's Slime City A student moves into a run-down building in New York City. His bizarre neighbors make a concoction in their apartment they call wine, but when he takes some of it, he turns into a deformed, murderous monster. And Slime City Massacre In the wake of a "dirty bomb" attack, a New York City neighborhood known as "Slime City" has been evacuated, except for the homeless ("displaced refugees"). Four squatters searching for food in the ruins of the Zachary Devon Soup Kitchen (Jennifer Bihl, Kealan Patrick Burke, Debbie Rochon, Lee Perkins) discover a supply of Zachary Devon's Home Brewed Elixir and Himalayan Yogurt. When they drink the elixir and eat the yogurt, they are transformed into hideous slime creatures driven to murder - an intermediate step as they are possessed by the spirits of Zachary Devon (Robert Sabin) and the members of his Coven of Flesh, who committed suicide years earlier. When a greedy developer (Roy Frumkes) sets his sites on Slime City, he hires a team of mercenaries (Nelron Hubbard, Tommy Sweeney, T.J. Merrick, Eric Mache, and Nicholas John Morgan Anderson) to wipe out the homeless population. It's a battle royal between the Slime Heads, the mercenaries, and bloodthirsty mutant cannibals! A loving tribute to the over the top splatter films of the 1980s, featuring Brooke Lewis, Mary Bogle, and Lloyd Kaufman. Today we talk about KIN by Kealan Patrick Burke - and be sure to check out all the mentioned authors! I added a little more talk that I had skipped in my notes, so filmed on two days with different light. "On a scorching hot summer day in Elkwood, Alabama, Claire Lambert staggers naked, wounded, and half-blind away from the scene of an atrocity. She is the sole survivor of a nightmare that claimed her friends, and even as she prays for rescue, the killers — a family of cannibalistic lunatics — are closing in." Born and raised in a small harbor town in the south of Ireland, Kealan Patrick Burke knew from a very early age that he was going to be a horror writer. The combination of an ancient locale, a horror-loving mother, and a family full of storytellers, made it inevitable that he would end up telling stories for a living. Since those formative years, he has written five novels, over a hundred short stories, six collections, and edited four acclaimed anthologies. In 2004, he was honored with the Bram Stoker Award for his novella The Turtle Boy. Kealan has worked as a waiter, a drama teacher, a mapmaker, a security guard, an assembly-line worker at Apple Computers, a salesman (for a day), a bartender, landscape gardener, vocalist in a rock band, curriculum content editor, fiction editor at Gothic.net, and, most recently, a fraud investigator. When not writing, Kealan designs book covers through his company Elderlemon Design. A number of his books have been optioned for film. Dan and I had a wonderful time talking with Horror Writer Kealan Patrick Burke about his writing and lots of other kinda unrelated topics. Topics ranged from toilet sharks, elaborate shorts, death, Roman Polanski, poverty, writing stories about people in bars and other exciting things including the time I accidentally sanded off my fingernails while making a Van Halen key chain when I was a kid and how Dan Pullen may be a turtle murderer. Oh yeah, and we are all nothing but a 'basket of hammers'. Kealan is writing some of the best new Horror out there. We highly recommend his work. Kealan's website Kealan's Amazon Page

Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. Have you ever wondered what the aftermath of some of your favorite films would be like? For example, what would the personality of the final girl in the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre be like? What would the victims’ families do or feel after the crime? What made the villains tick? How did their family structure come about? Just released in trade paperback after being a successful hardcover and e-book, Kealan Patrick Burke's newest novel, Kin, takes a fresh approach to Southern American horror. When a bleeding naked girl walks out of a forest near the farmlands of Alabama, a chain of events occur that brings about both death and deliverance to a large ensemble cast. After the horrendous crimes by a sadistic and morally twisted family, Kealan Patrick Burke focuses on the lone survivor and the families of those who have lost loved ones. Kin is a tale that brings the elements of films and novels of such prominent talents as Tobe Hooper and Jack Ketchum. Yet Kealan Patrick Burke's unique approach takes a well traveled tale and makes it innovative and original. If you are a fan of horror, here's a novel that brings classic grind house to the page in a well written and heart wrenching tale. Dark Discussions discusses the novel and why it is a modern masterpiece. To conclude this week's episode, Kealan Patrick Burke joins your hosts to talk writing and the inspiration of Kin.
