Melanie is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and has worn a lot of hats as a hospice worker. She worked as the Director of Psychosocial Services, leading a 45-person interdisciplinary team of social workers, counselors, and spiritual care counselors to coordinate psychosocial, spiritual, and bereavement services.  As a hospice worker, she was an advocate for her team.  Educating her community became Melanie's focus later in her career.  Her work in hospice gave Melanie an understanding of how compassion fatigue affects each member of the team.  The unique structure of a hospice team enables each member to support the others to combat the effects of compassion fatigue.  Melanie has found meaning in the decades she has spent working in hospice care.   Find all the services and products Odonata Care offers at thecareplan.net. West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Brett McMillion said scouts have already helped with the newest Almost Heaven swing at Pipestem Resort State Park. “Some of the more popular projects will relate to trails, whether it be new trail construction, upgrades to existing or even basic maintenance on trails,” McMillion said. “There will likely be some facility upgrades or renovations, such as painting.” McMillion said scouts can be a resource for smaller parks that may not have the bigger budgets. He said the DNR is already in contact with other scout councils from across West Virginia to expand the program. Episode Description – In this episode, we take a deep dive into LAPD D-Platoon (aka SWAT) with Lee McMillion, one of the two Lieutenants who currently lead the unit.  We discuss the history of SWAT, the current configuration of the team, the specialized cadres within the team, and what happens when the team is activated.  We also discuss how they select the right personnel, leading a team of high achievers, maintaining high standards, and trying to support personnel who are constantly engaged in dangerous and potentially traumatic events.  Today's Guest - Lt. Lee McMillion. Lee is currently one of the two Lieutenants leading the Los Angeles Police Departments Metropolitan Division D-Platoon - also known as LAPD SWAT. James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte are Emmy-nominated documentary directors and producers for the HBO documentary series, McMillion$. Brian and James return to Cinepod to talk about their latest documentary, The Big Conn, now airing on Apple TV+. The Big Conn is a four-part documentary series that tells the unbelievable true story of larger-than-life attorney, Eric C. Conn. Conn stole over half a billion dollars from the government and taxpayers in the largest Social Security fraud case in United States history. Conn got away with it for more than 10 years before two whistleblowers told the FBI what he was doing and Conn went on the run. Documentary filmmaking has grown and elevated as an art over the years, and James and Brian take a cinematic approach to the form. Their previous documentary series, McMillion$ had a thread of comedy throughout, with such interesting characters that it reminded them of a Coen brothers movie. For The Big Conn, Brian and James took a similar approach. They dive deep into Eric Conn's life, using comedy to hold the audience's interest, but underneath it's a very serious exposé about the broken American Social Security system. To put together such sprawling stories, James and Brian create a story outline, determine who the interviewees should be, interview the characters, write a script and then decide where they need to put in animated graphics, archival footage and recreations during the editing process. Talented cinematographer Jeff Dolan has worked with the team for years, shooting both interviews and recreations on The Big Conn and McMillion$. Brian and James planned out and put together a guide for lighting and shot composition for the look of the interviews, based on shots from scripted movies they love. You've been warned. Okay, so I do talk a bit about my kids and how they're developing as they grow up. I can't wait to see how the next 2-4 years go with Chris graduating in 2 and Audrey starting as a Freshman next year. It's gonna be a wild ride no doubt. (pics in link here) On the subject of what I'm into...well, I forgot to talk about something big. I was asked to a sneak peek screening of the 3rd season of Love, Death, and Robots for Netflix. I love the first two seasons madly and what I saw of this one is no different. Jibaro and Night of the Mini Dead are my two faves. I can't wait to see them again and all the rest of the new ones this coming Friday. What else am I watching? I finished up the McMillion$ documentary on HBOMax and it was fantastic. I started up Invisible Pilot shortly after. Great as well. Did snag a new record this week. Open Mike Eagle's Dark Comedy is really special. A nice mix of Rap, Electronic, and more. Check it out if you're into that sort of thing. Or even if you're not. I mean, try new things people! Not reading much new. Gotta catch up. Still listening to Paradise Sky by Joe R. Lansdale.
