Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go.  Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)

October has arrived and as we are wont to do here at The Politics of Cinema, we are diving into an approiate theme within the horror genre to celebrate. In the past we've looked at; Fascism in Green Room (2015), Humans Hunting Humans, Art House Horror, and the career of George Romero. This year we are heading into the thick of the woods to explore Folk Horror.  We discuss a few classics of the genre, such as Witchfinder General (1968), The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), The Wicker Man (1973), and Ganja & Hess (1973). We also connect the themes in those early films to those explored in modern folk horror like The Witch (2015), It Follows (2014), Hereditary (2018), and Midsommar (2019)—before Isaac reins us in so we don't include every single horror film in this genre. Our main focus is also on one classic and one modern example: Penda's Fen (1974) and La Llorona (2019). These two striking examples of folk horror delve into the complexities of identity, history, and the landscapes that shape us. In Penda's Fen, we find a pagan anarchist manifesto within a coming-of-age story set in rural 1970s England. With La Llorona, we see how the ghosts of the past exact revenge on the Guatemalan General who orchestrated an Indigenous genocide. Both films yield surprisingly upbeat results within their narratives—at least to us. If folk horror piques your interest, we would also highly recommend watching Keir-La Janisse's documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021). For our first episode of 2023, Dario speaks to a great friend of the podcast Mark Jenkin about his new Cornish "folk horror", Enys Men. Starring Mary Woodvine as a volunteer isolated on a Cornish island seemingly with the task of observing and recording the local wildlife. This sets the stage for a disquieting, time-bending, psycho-ecological fable, forged through Jenkin's singular audio-visual sensibility.  In a wide-ranging conversation, Mark goes deep into the artistic process underpinning the film, thinks through questions the work throws up about loneliness, isolation, time and memory. The notion of genre is another topic of discussion, with the renaissance in cinematic folk horror. But Dario forward his thesis that Enys Men is a "last woman on Earth" sci-fi.       It's also great have Neil returning to the show after his hiatus. He reviews another potential entry to the international folk horror canon Yanuari (January). From Bulgarian director Andrey Paounov and co-written by former Cinematologists guest Alex Barrett. Shownotes ENYS MEN is in cinemas now.  The Cinematic DNA of ENYS MEN season [curated by director Mark Jenkin] runs at BFI Southbank until 31 January with selected films and Jenkin's shorts collection available on BFI Player now. ENYS MEN will be released on Blu-ray/DVD and BFI Player on 1 May. The ENYS MEN Original Score by Mark Jenkin is out now digitally via Invada Records and released on vinyl on 24 February. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore folk horror on screen. The genre is commonly associated with British film from the 70s, but Ellen and Mark investigate how it resonates across the globe and its resurgence over the last decade.. Ellen speaks to the author and director of the folk horror documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, Kier-La Janisse about the first folk horror films, the hallmarks of the genre and folk horror's depiction of pastoral and urban settings. Ellen then talks to director Nikyatu Jusu about her recent film Nanny which won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance last year. They discuss how she uses West African folklore in the film and why she thinks folk horror is culturally specific. Mark talks to director Mark Jenkin about his upcoming film, Enys Men. They consider the film's relationship to Cornish identity and the landscape as well as why he prefers to call Enys Men a folk film rather than a folk horror film. And the director of some modern takes on folk horror such as The Witch and The Northman, Robert Eggers, recommends a couple of underseen folk horror gems. For all the glühwein and good cheer, mid-December also marks the darkest part of the year, when families around the world gather to watch their favorite holiday ghost story: A Christmas Carol. Easily the most famous spooky Yuletide movie, it is by no means the only one: Black Christmas was arguably the first American slasher movie; the mischievous creatures from Gremlins squealed their way into many hearts in 1984; and the Alpine Krampus has more credits to his name than Santa has reindeer. For generations, the heart of winter—not Halloween—was when we told unsettling stories around the fire, whether they featured the ghosts of our own pasts or Gryla the Icelandic ogre and her evil Yule cat. This week on Smarty Pants, writer and director Kier-La Janisse offers a primer on how these stories have found their way onto the screen, from annual BBC television specials to big-budget Hollywood bloodbaths.Go beyond the episode:Kier-La Janisse's Yuletide Terror, co-edited with Paul Corupe, is out of print, but her House of Psychotic Women, an “autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films” was just released in an expanded editionJanisse's documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched is a thorough history of folk horror, which makes its way to the holidays with movies like Krampus (2015) and Rare Exports (2010), and wintry tales like Marketa Lazarová (1967), The White Reindeer (1952), Hagazussa (2017), and November (2017)You can watch the newest episode of the BBC's anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas on Britbox. And was cited in  the documentary “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched” as an excellent example of international, specifically Asian, Folk horror. The film centers on a policeman who investigates a series of mysterious killings and illnesses in a remote Korean village called Gokseong in order to save his daughter. According to director Na Hong-jin, this movie was made on the basis of folk religions in Korea and Nepal and on Catholic faiths. Na teamed up with Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun, acting  as the producer and screenwriter for ‘The Medium', a supernatural horror film mockumentary. When writing the story, Na explained in an interview that The Medium was initially a sequel to The Wailing with Hwang Jung-min's shaman character. However, this rendition did not come to light, as quoted by Na himself, “The Medium has no relation to The Wailing.” Therefore, not a very interesting titbit, but these newer films have hardly any info on Wikipedia or IMDB, so cut us some slack. Na has said, “Whenever I finish a film, I don't want to go anywhere near another one.” Which may explain the slow release of his movies, despite being in the film industry for over 15 years, he only has 3 films to his name. (which is probably more than whoever dished this shade on IMDB has ever done)This review contains spoilers - please watch this before we ruin it for you Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders.

We can have a mainstream arthouse movie, as a treat. Josh and Drusilla catch up after a trying week and catch up on movies. Josh watched Hour of the Wolf before going on a Bergman break. Drusilla saw David Arquette at Bob Baker Day. The duo discusses goth fitness and the Andrew WK renaissance before Josh tells yet another cocaine story. Drusilla watched At Long Last Love, which is good no matter what boomers say, and we love Polly Platt. Josh watched and loved Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched as well as The Greasy Strangler. And then onto the feature, the director's cut of Ari Aster's Midsommar. Drusilla gives a trigger warning for self-harm and suicide.  Dani (Florence Pugh) has the worst boyfriend of all time. The duo compares Midsommar to Hereditary and also the differences between the director's cut and the theatrical cut. They talk gaslighting and ritual, anthropology and the terrifying old people ceremony, vacations where they weren't wanted, Josh's pagan hillbilly family, meat pies full of pubes, inbreeding, then have a long debate about using disfigured actors in horror films before playing Have They Seen It? Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com

We're focusing specifically on the revived figure of the truly frightening witch that is central to Robert Eggers' The Witch (2015) as well as the directorial debut of Goran Stolevski, You Won't Be Alone, which is currently playing in theaters.  These brilliant witch films are part of the "folk horror revival" of the past decade. Join us as we explore that cinematic context as well, covered in detail in the 2021 documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror.

The conversation covers Tyler's family, his approach to filmmaking, the nagging themes he can't shake and the filmmakers his work is in dialogue with. Additionally, Dario and Neil spend time really thinking about the theme of alienation in Tyler's film and work, and what it says so beautifully about this moment in our time. We are beginning a journey down the rabbit hole of Folk Horror, and the movie Jugface is our starting point. This film has shown up on lists of most disturbing horror films since it came out, but this is a first watch for me. The inspiration for this journey stems from the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched streaming on Shudder. Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon started at the movies with the new Scream (Theaters), which she entered with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. She next watched the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (Shudder), which she enjoyed, but it was right in her wheelhouse. Next, she watched Beanie Mania (HBO), a documentary about the beanie baby bubble that mostly reminded her of the time period. The Dragon watched a few shows: she started with the newest season of Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), which she is enjoying. Next, she's halfway through the new season of Cheer (Netflix), which is great, and finally has been rewatching her comfort show Hannibal (Hulu) for the third time.   Berto on the Bed: Berto started by watching Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman (Netflix), which he found laughably bad. Next, Berto watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) (Prime) and the sequel: Out Of The Shadows (Paramount +), he thought it was exactly what it should have been silly, but he didn't like the action in it. Next, he watched The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman (Netflix), about a British conman who spent years convincing people he was an MI6 agent. Next, Berto talked quickly about a few movies he had seen: Jakob's Wife (Shudder), which he thought was an interesting take on the vampire story; The Bad Batch (Netflix), a bad slow movie he didn't like; Ghost Ship (Tubi), a typical 2000's horror movie that is passable. Finally, he watched JCVD (Tubi), which he thought showed some of Jean-Claude Van Damme's acting ability but was a bad and slow film.   This week's deep dive is 2012 horror film Excision, currently streaming on Tubi & Amazon Prime.

Here we discuss such delights as Mark Gatiss' adaptation of “The Mezzotint”; epic Folk Horror documentary “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched”; “Devs”; “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”; “Dead Still”; some real classics and the 1986 oddity “Nomads”.

Our yearly Halloween special is back! Back in 2010 Mark Gatiss coined the term "Unholy Trinity" in his BBC documentary series A History of Horror, in regards to three seminal British folk horror movies, a subgenre that gained popularity in the late 1960's and beyond. The three films were 1968's Witchfinder General, 1971's The Blood on Satan's Claw and 1973's The Wicker Man. We first heard the term "Unholy Trinity" back when we watched Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, a documentary about the history of folk horror that we covered on episode 145: SXSW Film Festival 2021. Witchfinder General 14:00-28:30 The Blood on Satan's Claw 31:00-42:30 The Wicker Man 43:00-1:03:00 For more information on the Unholy Trinity, check out this article from Film School Rejects. The woods are nature at its most feral. The deep, dark forest is the original home of the boogeyman, long before there were dark closets and basements and that space under your bed. The Folk Horror subgenre has gained a new audience as more young filmmakers exploit the fine line between the natural and the supernatural...and openly ask if there's a line at all.  In honor of Kier-La Janisse's fantastic and masterful documentary, "WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED: A HISTORY OF FOLK HORROR", I welcome writer/producer/author/editor/and horror journalist, KAT ELLINGER (Editor-in-Chief of Diabolique Magazine) to discuss Folk Horror, the history of Heathenism in England, and several other obsessions!
