Of all the tunes we do, none is more evocative than “Autumn Leaves.”Joseph Kosma's post World War II composition quickly became a jazz standard in America from the 1950s right up to today. “Autumn Leaves” actually is the tale of two torch songs,” music journalist Bill DeMain notes. “The original, written in French as “Les Feuilles Mortes” (meaning, “Dead Leaves”), was a dark lament of lost love and regret. “The translated version,” DeMain says, “ touched on the same theme, but in a gentler, more wistful way.”Poetic BirthIt started as a poem written in 1945 by screenwriter and Left Bank intellectual Jacques Prévert as part of the script for a ballet called Le Rendezvous. Two years later, when director Marcel Carné made a film of the ballet, Kosma entered our story, setting the Prévert verse to music. “Maybe because the words weren't conceived in song form,” says DeMain, “it took on a slightly unwieldy structure. Kosma interpreted it as 24 bars of introductory verse containing two distinct moods and melodies, followed by a 16-bar refrain (half the length of a traditional Tin Pan Alley song).”Carné's film was a flop, but the song had a life of its own. The movie's lead actor, a popular young singer named Yves Montand, made it his.But it was French chanteuse Juliette Greco — the perpetually black-clad “Little Miss Existentialist”— made perhaps the most memorable French version. In 1950, when the song was translated into English with Johnny Mercer lyrics, only a small part of the original opening verse survived (and is rarely sung today). “Mostly,” notes DeMain, “it became about featuring the catchy, spiraling 16-bar refrain. … In effect, this was a completely different song from the rambling elegy Prévert and Kosma had created. While the original was about an all-consuming passion, this was more about a fleeting attachment. More nostalgic than angst-ridden, more bittersweet than bitter.”Coming to AmericaFive years later, Nat “King” Cole took it to No. 1 on the hit parade, making it a nightclub standard for everyone from Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennett and Eartha Kitt.In 2012, jazz historian Philippe Baudoin called the song "the most important non-American standard." "It has been recorded about 1,400 times by mainstream and modern jazz musicians alone,” Baudoin said, “and is the eighth most-recorded tune by jazzmen.”Notable versions have been recorded by Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Chet Baker and Erroll Garner, by Ahmad Jamal, Duke Ellington and Cannonball Adderly, by John Coltrane, Chick Corea and Stanley Jordan. Our Take on the TuneThis song has those marvelous Mercer lyrics, as Floodster Emerita Michelle Hoge demonstrates whenever she's in the room. But when she's not here to sing it, the song also is an extraordinary vehicle as an instrumental. Here from last week's rehearsal, Danny Cox lays down that lovely melody, then his old friend and our guest for the evening — Bob Murnahan, in town for a visit from his Colorado home — takes a couple of choruses to mine gold in all those cool chords. Debussy paints a musical depiction of dead leaves with dissonant harmonies and eerie and fragmented lines in his "Feuilles mortes," Prelude no. 2 from the second volume of preludes. It shows a lot of his typical features such as sequential rather than functional harmony, block chords, and a maximal use of different piano registers. With Henrik Kilhamn, piano. WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, DEAD LEAVES FALL   I stepped outside yesterday to take a break and give my dogs a chance to run in the yard and realized autumn is finally here. While standing there, a gust of wind blew by my face, and I was showered with a burst of leaves that covered the yard. The "Spirit of God spoke to me and said, "when the wind blows, dead leaves will fall." After you've lived through a few seasons, you become aware of the signals that tell you change is at hand. The temperature has changed; the leaves on the trees are turning colors, and the autumn winds are beginning to blow. In the Northwest, that's a good sign that the season has shifted, and we are now heading toward winter. The leaves on the tree have served their purpose. They gave us shade all through the hot summer, and now their duty has ended. As far as they're concerned, they would like to stay on that tree forever; after all, it's home to them.  But GodGod has other ideas for those leaves; they need to move on so the tree can rest and come back more robust in the spring. So what does GodGod do? He sends the wind, and when the wind blows, the leaves fall. Remember the old prophet that had free room and board beside the creek? The rest of the country was starving, but the birds brought him food daily, and the stream gave him water. What more could a prophet desire; it sounds like retirement had come. But GodGod had other plans for the old boy; his job wasn't over yet.  Because the prophet was content where he was, GodGod dried up the creek and stopped the delivery system for food. Why does trouble come along and the wind of adversity blow at times? It's to get us off the dime and allow us to exercise our faith again. Much of our decisions come out of a sense of urgency because the winds are blowing again. I believe if you take notice, you'll find that those winds will blow your dead leaves off so that your new season can come forth with strength. Folks, pay attention; you can know when the seasons change. Jesus told us that we could look to the sky and tell when it was going to rain. How much more can we do that in the spirit?   YOU CAN GIVE HERE=http://www.georgewatkinsministries.com/help-us.html   WEBSITE= http://www.georgewatkinsministries.com/home-page.html   FACEBOOK=https://www.facebook.com/FaithProducerstv/   Faith Producers address: PO Bx 1006 Mt Vernon, WA 98273   FAITHPRODUCERS INTERNATIONAL PODCAST https://faithproducers.podbean.com/   INSTAGRAM DRGEORGEWATKINS https://www.instagram.com/drgeorgewatkins/

This first episode explores the White Stripes debut albums, from the self titled album, through the bedroom-made sophomore album De Stijl, and the record that put them on the national stage, White Blood Cells, featuring Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground and Fell In Love with a Girl.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

In November, two members of the California Board of Parole granted him a recommendation for parole. One member voted against parole. Now Nicole's parents are asking Governor Gavin Newsom to deny the recommendation. Newsom has three options. If he takes no action, Marum will be released. If Newson reverses the decision, Marcum will receive another hearing in 18 months. The last option is to refer the decision back to the board for the members to modify their decision. Imaishi Gone Wild! After all the mentions on previously published podcasts, we're finally, on this first day of Autumn 2018, releasing our Dead Leaves podcast. Get it? (We knew you would.) This proto-TRIGGER production is a visual smorgasbord of sex and violence with a fairy tale structure and American comic book stylings. This divisive title, one of the first upon which Ink and Jared disagreed, has a lot to appreciate and, depending upon your predispositions, a lot to bemoan or celebrate. Give a listen and maybe consider giving this OVA a chance!
