FROM THE MID-1800s through the runup to the Second World War, lumber schooners were a familiar sight in all Oregon seaports. These were small, simple cargo ships, with shallow drafts so that they could fit across small river bars and in and out of the “doghole” ports of northern California and southern Oregon. In many of these ports, lumber from local sawmills was actually loaded onto the ships with a block and tackle, dangling from something like a zipline, while the crew fought to hold the ship steady in the swells and breakers. And the ships, when they headed out fully loaded on their way to San Francisco or San Diego, sometimes had so little freeboard and such a tall deck load that it looked like any little wave could just swamp them or roll them over. Starting in the late 1880s, operators started putting steam engines in lumber schooners, which made the tall masts unnecessary; by the First World War nearly the entire fleet had converted to these “steam schooners.” (Since a schooner is by definition a sailing ship, the later mast-free ones weren't really schooners; but the name stuck.) Steam schooners were a big improvement, particularly with respect to safety. Winds in river bars and bays are notoriously fickle, and plenty of lumber schooners ended up on the rocks when the breeze died at the last minute, or blew onto the beach when caught in a gale. Sometimes, when that happened, the sailors got lucky; and sometimes they didn't. All in all, it was a very dangerous way to make a living. But there was one key mitigating factor for sailors in lumber schooners: As long as they were carrying a load, they always knew their ships would never sink. The cargo would always keep them afloat. Plenty of sailors ended up owing their lives to that fact, since one of the first things that always seemed to happen when the weather got really nasty was that the lifeboats would all get carried away by boarding seas. Among those lucky survivors were most of the crew of the Frank W. Howe.... (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1804d.frank-w-howe-lumber-schooner-shipwreck-492.html)

A groundbreaking female firefighter, Cindie Schooner-Ball lived for the thrill of riding backwards on a fire truck, code 3 with lights flashing, sirens wailing, and horns blasting, heading towards that ominous cloud of black smoke. In her captivating memoir, she vividly describes these high-adrenaline experiences and the stunned look on onlookers' faces when she got off the truck, put on her hood, face mask, and helmet, and they realized she was a woman. Hired in June 1987 by a large urban Fire-Rescue Department in South Florida, Cindie rose through the ranks as a firefighter, driver-engineer, paramedic and lieutenant while also earning a degree in fire science. She retired as a captain in 2015 after 28 years on the force. Throughout her career, she had been asked so many questions about how she managed to excel while working in this male-dominated profession that she decided to write Sister in a Brotherhood to share her story. Cindie recognized early that in order to succeed as both a firefighter and a woman would require perseverance, grit, and the ability to command respect. You will understand why firefighting is Cindie's calling and passion when you read this inspiring book. She shares memorable moments in working and living with other first responders who are dedicated to helping people in crisis. Cindie encourages anyone who wants to serve - especially women who have the desire to enter this noble profession - to pursue their dream, as she did. Cindie Schooner-Ball began her career as a first responder with the fire service in the mid-80s. She recognized early on that to succeed as both a firefighter and a woman in a mostly male workplace would require perseverance, grit, and the ability to command respect. Over her three-decade career, she pushed herself to tackle new challenges and rise into leadership positions. She became an EMT and then a paramedic, while also earning a degree in fire science. When she finally achieved the rank of captain, she was the only woman at the induction ceremony. Now retired, she loves speaking to people about her experiences as a first responder and as a woman in a male-dominated industry. She lives with her husband Mark, and her German shepherd, Chewie, in Florida. To learn more, visit SisterinaBrotherhood.com. When Suzanne was 7 years old, she set sail from Plymouth, England, on the schooner Wavewalker with her parents and brother. Their trip, which was recreating Captain Cook's third voyage around the world, was supposed to last for three years but ended up taking a decade. Her international bestselling book 'Wavewalker' tells the story of that voyage. We talk all about not only the journey, but also the book, and most importantly, issues a family should consider before planning an exrtended voyage with children.

The small Boston-built schooner Sultana served as a customs-enforcement interceptor on the North American eastern seaboard in the period leading up to the American Declaration of Independence, when British taxation of American trade was a hugely contentious issue. As a typical workaday British American merchant ship taken into naval service, Sultana offers a rare opportunity to understand a technology of paramount importance to this world, where records for merchant ships are scarce, but where in this case a wealth of information, from plan drawings to the fully-intact logbooks, has survived. Phillip Reid's book A Boston Schooner in the Royal Navy, 1768-1772: Commerce and Conflict in Maritime British America (Boydell Press, 2023) provides a detailed narrative of the ship's activities, and reveals the nature of life on board and the day to day business of operating a small sailing ship. It explores the technology of the ship and her sailing qualities as revealed by the ship's logs and also by the performance of a modern replica. In addition, the book situates Sultana's role within the wider picture of the British Atlantic in this crucial period. It is thereby both naval microhistory and also Atlantic history for all scholars interested in the formation and development of the British Atlantic world. Learn more about your ad choices. One of the biggest barriers that holds entrepreneurs and real estate investors back from leaving their 9-5 job is health insurance. Today's guest, Andy Schoonover, is the CEO of CrowdHealth, a company that's changing the way we pay for healthcare. What I love about CrowdHealth is that they eliminate a lot of the headaches and costs that are associated with traditional health insurance. Their mission is to make healthcare more accessible, simple, and reasonably priced, which in turn makes entrepreneurship more attainable. In this interview, Andy is sharing how CrowdHealth works, why it's a great solution for real estate investors, and how you can get started crowdfunding your healthcare.
Sam Merrett is the founder, leader, and captain of the Schooner Apollonia, the only operating sail freight vessel in the United States. The Apollonia sails up and down the Hudson River, collecting and delivering cargo as she makes her way with the power of the wind. Sam has a background working in alternative fuels and spent years converting truck engines from diesel to vegetable oil. He gained sailing and boating experience on the Hudson River, and then bought the Apollonia in 2015. The vessel had not been sailed in over 30 years, and was missing an important component: the rig. After a 4-year yard period, Sam and his crew started sailing the Apollonia in 2019. For the past three summer seasons, the Apollonia and her crew have been shipping goods up and down the river. Sam and Emma sat down in Hudson, NY, to talk about this carbon neutral shipping project, and everything that comes with it.
