Plateau Of Latent Potential Rom 12:2 #Nightlight #RTTBROS Romans 12:2 says: "Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." What does it mean to be transformed by the renewing of your mind? It means to change the way you think, feel, and act according to God's word and will. It means to let go of the worldly values, habits, and attitudes that keep you from living a godly life. It means to allow God to work in you and through you by his Spirit and grace. But how does this transformation happen? Is it instant or gradual? Is it easy or hard? Is it visible or invisible? The truth is, transformation is often a slow process. It takes time, effort, and perseverance. It involves trials, tests, and challenges. It requires faith, hope, and love. Think of an ice cube. When you put it in a warm room, it starts to melt. But you don't see any change until it reaches 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Until then, it looks solid and frozen. But inside, there is a lot of activity going on. The molecules are moving faster and faster, breaking the bonds that hold them together. The ice cube is changing from a solid to a liquid state. The same is true for us. When we expose ourselves to God's word, his presence, his people, and his purposes, we start to melt. But we don't see any change until we reach a certain point. Until then, we may look the same as before. But inside, there is a lot of activity going on. Our thoughts are changing, our feelings are changing, our actions are changing. We are changing from being conformed to this world to being transformed by God. This is what James Clear calls the Plateau of Latent Potential. He says: "Breakthrough moments are often the result of many previous actions, which build up the potential required to unleash a major change." So don't be discouraged if you don't see immediate results in your transformation. Don't give up if you face obstacles or setbacks in your journey. Don't compare yourself with others who may seem more advanced or successful than you. Remember that God is working in you and for you. He has a good plan for your life. He will complete what he started in you. As Max Lucado says: "God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus." So keep melting. Keep renewing your mind. Keep following God's will. And one day, you will see the change. Atomic Habits by James Clear 1. What are Atomic Habits: The 1st meaning of the word atomic is tiny or small. So, atomic habits mean small habits. The 2ndmeaning is that Atoms are the fundamentals units that enlarge any system. Just like atoms improving tiny habits can give us a huge reward. The 3rdmeaning is that an atom is the source of great energy and power so are the atomic habits. If we add all the meanings, we can understand the basic philosophy of the book. 2. Why Tiny Changes Make a Big Difference: As James Clear said in his book: “Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations. Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” Just as the money goes up through compound interest, the effects your habits multiply as you repeat them. James clear says, if you keep improving 1% each day, at the end of the year you will be 37 times better. Conversely, if you are doing 1% worse each day, you will end with almost 0% improvement. 1% better every day for one year (1.01365) = 37.78 1% worse every day for one year (0.99365) = 00.03 3. The Plateau of Latent Potential: Habits do not seem to make a difference until we cross a critical threshold. We expect progress to be quick, but the key aspect of any compounding process is that the effects are delayed until we cross a threshold what James calls as The Plateau of Latent Potential. 4. Forget About Goals, Focus on System Instead: So, what is the difference between Goals and Systems? According to James Clear's words: “Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.” 5. The Three Layers of Behavior Change: According to James: “Changing our habits is challenging for two reasons: (1) We try to change the wrong thing. (2) We try to change our habit in the wrong way.” 6. How to Build a Habit in 4 Simple Steps: James divided the habit building process into 4 stages: · Cue: The cue triggers the brain to start the action. Because it reflects the reward we will get. · Craving: Craving provides the driving force to adopt a habit. · Response: Response is the actual habit or process we adopt to achieve our reward. · Reward: In the end, the reward, for which we adopted a habit. These four steps are called Habit Loop.

We’ve all done it. It’s happened to almost all of us. We see a thing. We want to try it. It’s hard. And…we give up. Whether it’s karate, business, piano, reading, learning another language...every new skill has a “pain period” and, most of the time, we never get over it.Because we lack encouragement or any visible progress, we quit. In a way, this is a kind of costly cognitive error. In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about something he calls “The Plateau of Latent Potential.” This plateau can be likened to bamboo, which spends its first five years building extensive root systems underground before exploding ninety feet into the air within six weeks. Or to an ice cube, which will only begin to melt once the surrounding temperature hits thirty-two degrees (or the resulting water that only boils at two hundred and twelve degrees).Just because it sometimes takes longer than we’d like to see the results of our efforts doesn’t mean that our efforts are going to waste. In fact, most of the important work—the build up—won’t seem like it’s amounting to anything, but of course it is. We struggle with realizing this as adults...so imagine being a kid. They’ve never experienced the elation of suddenly breaking through that plateau. They don’t even have enough experience to understand the bamboo analogy!Which makes this a key area for a dad to exert important influence. You have to keep encouraging them. You have to help them see even the microscopic progress they’re making. You have to help manage their expectations. It might not seem like doing this piece of homework or trying hard in practice matters. It might not seem like any of it is making a difference, but you can show them how it is. You can show them why it matters. It’s not that they should never quit things (especially things you forced them to do against their will). It’s that if you want them to get across the threshold, they’ll need your help. They’ll need you to encourage them. They’ll need your help developing grit. They’ll need you to convince them that a payoff is coming. Because it is. Especially if they can learn this as a general life lesson.

NUGGET CONTEXT James speaks about the shape of the compounding curve and speaks about how we should think about motivating ourselves to persist despite no visible progress in the lower parts of the curve where the outcomes are not apparent. He specifically talks about the notion of the plateau of latent potential where suddenly the cumulative efforts bear fruit in a dramatic fashion. He speaks about the kind of feedback loops we need to set for ourselves and the markers that will help us chip away at foothills of the compounding curve. GUEST James Clear is the Author of the book - Atomic Habits that has sold more than 1 Million Copies globally. He is the creator of The Habits Academy and runs the website jamesclear.com where he writes about habits and human potential. The central question he is trying to answer through his work is “How can we live better”. He has a weekly newsletter where he shares some of his ideas and this goes out to more than Half a Million subscribers who benefit from his thinking. To subscribe to his newsletter, you could just got to Jamesclear.com.  In our conversation we spoke about several elements that he has covered in the book. We first spoke about his journey and how he came to studying and researching habits. We then spoke about how we should think about building habits in the right areas. James says that we need to work hard on the things that come easily to us! We explore that in the context of transitions and relate that to the notion of keeping the identity small. We then dive into the notion of the plateau of latent potential which we all are likely to encounter when we get into a new domain. We also discuss how we can ensure that we don’t become slaves of habits and try to cultivate habits with awareness (something that we can learn from the Japanese train conductors!). We then go on to speak about the role of the environment in building habits and wrap up by talking about the notion of the gateway habit.  These ideas might help you convert your 2020 resolutions into habits that create the system for you to achieve your goals. Best wishes for the year ahead.  Published in Jan 2020. HOST Deepak is a Leadership Advisor and an Executive Coach. Big Ideas we explore include: The math behind 1% gains compounding over a year (and a decade!), navigating the Plateau of Latent Potential (ever given up on a habit? Take note!), the importance (and etymology) of our Identity (get this: it *literally* means 'repeated being ness'), The 4 Laws of Behavior Change (remember: cue + craving + response + reward and... make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, make it satisfying), and the Sorites Paradox (can a single habit change your life?).

James Clear’s life was forever changed when he faced a devastating injury to his brain in his junior year of high school. After months of hard work and determination, he fought his way back to success in sports, school, and his life. He credits these astounding successes to his “atomic habits.” This concept is something that he wishes to share with the world. James wants to educate people about a new revolutionizing system for change that has the potential to alter the way we pursue goals. He explains that “Atomic Habits” are the small habits that we implement in our lives that compound to give us the results we are seeking. We often get discouraged because we expect change to be linear, when in actuality, we experience a “Plateau of Latent Potential”. By realizing that we can get 1% better everyday, and understanding that this improvement compounds, we are more motivated to put in the work that gets us to that breakthrough moment. By focusing on identity based habits and on who we want to become, we are much more likely to succeed in our level of achievement. James emphasizes the important of analyzing and being open to altering our beliefs in order to allow ourselves to grow. The real power in this process is that it can actually lead to us evolving our beliefs in ourselves. The habit feedback loop involves the cue, the craving, the response, and the reward. By understanding the steps of habit formation, we can better create and break good and bad habits, respectively. Read all about how you can start this transformative new system with James Clear’s book, “Atomic Habits.”   What you’ll get out of tuning in: How to create persisting good habits How to break bad habits Why habits are essential to success   Links Mentioned in the Episode: Qualify yourself for a spot in Awake Living   Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones James's website  Body Thrive Book   Show Highlights: Habits can work for you or against you in life. By understanding how we can design them in our favor, habits can help us achieve our goals. It is important to be patient in developing good habits. The effects often remain unnoticeable until we break out of the “Plateau of Latent Potential.” By focusing on our systems in place, rather than on our goals, we can better initiate change in ourselves. The most effective way to achieve change is to focus on what we want to become. By learning the “Four Laws of Behavioral Change” we can effectively build better habits.   Your Favorite Quotes: “Habits are the compound interest of self- improvement.” - James Clear “The most practical way to change who you are is to change what you do.” - James Clear “You can choose the identity you want to reinforce today with the habits you choose today” - James Clear “ Every goal is doomed to fail if it goes against the grain of human nature.” - James Clear   Guest BIO: James Clear is an American entrepreneur, author, and photographer. His pursuit of habit evolution began with a devastating injury in high school. His amazing recovery and return to success inspired him to share what he learned about habit evolution with the world. James dreams of helping everyone to answer the question: “How can we live better?” He is the creator of the Habits Academy, a training platform for those that aspire to create better habits for themselves. Fingerprint identification and lie detectors are well-known tools of law enforcement today, but both were quite revolutionary when they were introduced. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the memorable cases where these innovations were first used. We'll also see some phantom ships and puzzle over a beer company's second thoughts. Intro: In 1892, Bostonians realized that the architects of their new library had hidden their name in the façade. In 1918, a California businessman built a 7,900-ton steamer out of ferrocement. Sources for our feature on fingerprints and polygraphs: Ken Alder, The Lie Detectors, 2007.
