At RSAC Conference 2025, Sean Martin catches up with Brian Dye, CEO of Corelight, to explore a recurring truth in cybersecurity: attackers adapt, and defenders must follow suit. In this episode, Dye lays out why traditional perimeter defenses and endpoint controls alone are no longer sufficient—and why it's time for security teams to look back toward the network for answers.Beyond the Perimeter: Visibility as a Force MultiplierAccording to Dye, many organizations are still relying on security architectures that were top-of-the-line a decade ago. But attackers have already moved on. They're bypassing endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, exploiting unmanaged devices, IoT, and edge vulnerabilities. What's left exposed is the network itself—and that's where Corelight positions itself: providing what Dye calls “ground truth” through network-based visibility.Rather than rearchitecting environments or pushing intrusive solutions, Corelight integrates passively through out-of-line methods like packet brokers or traffic mirroring. The goal? Rich, contextual, retrospective visibility—without disrupting the network. This capability has proven essential for responding to advanced threats, including lateral movement and ransomware campaigns where knowing exactly what happened and when can mean the difference between paying a ransom or proving there's no real damage.Three Layers of Network InsightDye outlines a layered approach to detection:1. Baseline Network Activity – High-fidelity summaries of what's happening.2. Raw Detections – Behavioral rules, signatures, and machine learning.3. Anomaly Detection – Identifying “new and unusual” activity with clustering math that filters out noise and highlights what truly matters. This model supports teams who need to correlate signals across endpoints, identities, and cloud environments—especially as AI-driven operations expand the attack surface with non-human behavior patterns. The Metrics That MatterDye points to three critical success metrics for teams:• Visibility coverage over time.• MITRE ATT&CK coverage, especially around lateral movement.• The percentage of unresolved cases—those embarrassing unknowns that drain time and confidence. As Dye shares, organizations that prioritize network-level visibility not only reduce uncertainty, but also strengthen every other layer of their detection and response strategy.Learn more about Corelight: https://itspm.ag/coreligh-954270Note: This story contains promotional content. Learn more.Guest: Brian Dye, Chief Executive Officer, Corelight | https://www.linkedin.com/in/brdye/ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from Corelight: https://www.itspmagazine.com/directory/corelightLearn more and catch more stories from RSA Conference 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/rsac25______________________Keywords:sean martin, brian dye, network, visibility, ransomware, detection, cybersecurity, soc, anomalies, baselining, brand story, brand marketing, marketing podcast, brand story podcast______________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? Learn More

What does a waffle party, a melancholy performance review, and a CIA sabotage manual have in common? They all help us understand the strange, satirical—but strangely familiar—corporate world inside Apple TV+'s Severance. In this episode, inspired by The Future of Commerce article The grim barbarity of optics and design: Severance quotes for work, we explore how the show's unsettling one-liners shine a light on:The cult-like elevation of founders and company valuesThe dissonance between perks and real well-beingThe emotional toll of performance reviews and layoffsThe hidden rebellion in “corporate wellness” languageAnd how “office sabotage” might not be accidental after allWe'll also unpack some of the most striking (and hilarious) Severance quotes—from “The work is mysterious and important” to “They cannot crucify you if your hand is in a fist”—and ask what they reveal about real-world work culture today. What You'll Learn in This Episode:1. How Severance Became a Cultural Mirror for Modern WorkThe show's core premise and how it reflects the fragmentation of personal and professional identityThe psychological (and existential) impact of dividing your “innie” and “outie” self2. The Three Layers of Corporate Dissonance in SeverancePraise Keir: Worshipping founders and flattening criticism through “values”Perks and Rewards: When waffle parties replace fair payWorkplace Realities: Absurd performance reviews, layoff rituals, and inauthentic feedback loops3. In this episode, I discuss legal expense insurance, which is something I haven't covered yet, but I have been asked about and will be useful to know about as a small business owner. Today you'll hear about:What legal expense insurance is, what it's specifically designed for and examples of some of the risks that may come up for a small business ownerLegal disputes commonly faced by small business owners and that may require legal expenses Why it's so important to understand what coverage you already have under your other insurance policies How often to have the conversation with your insurance broker and specific questions to ask when you do speak with that person The significant financial impact that legal issues can have on a business and the pros and cons to weigh as the ownerWhy more and more small business owners are opting for legal expense insurance right now If you haven't recently reviewed your commercial insurance policies, I hope this serves as a reminder for you to do that. As well, I wanted to provide you with the list of questions that you can ask your insurance broker when you have the conversation around your policies and coverage, so that you can get a sense of what types of legal risks you may be potential exposed to, and then you can make some more informed decisions about how to protect your small business. Mentioned in this EpisodeEpisode 39 - Three Layers of Liability Protection—Listen to Get It In Writing on Apple, Spotify or wherever you catch your favorite podcasts! For more please visit my website at  Legal Mybiz.ca. Greetings! International Strange Music Day, celebrated annually on August 24, was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician and composer. The premise of the day is simple: to get people to play and listen to types of music they have never experienced before. He believes that broadening people's musical spectrums can also change the way that society looks at other aspects of life – his mantra is ‘listening without prejudice'. It is that spirit which today's program honors.  Thank you, Patrick!   PTE Celebrates International Strange Music Day 2023   Tobacco / Seven Years At Sea - Patrick Grant - A Sequence of Waves (twelve stories and a dream) - Peppergreen Media (2017) http://www.peppergreenmedia.com/seqwav.html   etudes 01-03 - J. Are you really as self-aware as you think you are? Self-awareness is fundamental to achieving happiness in life. If you don't know who you are, or think you're something you're not, you will not have the proper perspective through which to make decisions. First you must recognize who you are, and that it is different than who you ultimately want to be. You have to get specific about your strategy to become more self-aware. The next step is then becoming time-aware, and understanding the value of your time and how to maximize the quality of it. This is achieved through energy awareness, realizing how the ways in which you spend your time affect you emotionally in the moment. Optimizing for these aspects, and others detailed in the episode, over time, can lead you to becoming Ultra-Aware. This is the state that opens the door to success and happiness. We welcome Eric Sutherland, Senior Health Economist at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which we covered in episode 2 of season 2 with Eric's predecessor, Jillian Oderkirk. Eric spent 20 years with a global bank in the financial sector, but wanted to fulfil his wish to be engaged and find meaning in his work, transitioning to roles locally and federally in health on data strategy. Having worked with the Canadian government on health data strategy development, Eric recently moved to the OECD, in particular focusing on the impact of digital tools and data on heath care delivery and outcomes within the overall health ecosystem. In this conversation we start discussing Eric's definition of digital health, in his new role as Digital Health Lead at the OECD, and recognising there is no universal definition, but with a particular focus on technologies, interoperability and governance, linkage, quality of data, analytics and various intended use of health data. Against a context of incoherent fragmentation, Eric is focused on being able to produce useful guidance for countries to implement integrated digital health ecosystems, based on the three layers of digital tools, integrated data and responsible analytics. Beyond this Eric outlines what he thinks is working today in digital health, and what's not, using an analogy of water, pipes and outlets to describe this, where we find ourselves too often drowning in data, but thirsting for evidence. Continuing to use this analogy we discuss how this all operates, who is responsible for the different elements, and some best practice use cases, such as OHDSI, or the FAIR principles, with ideas to promote conscious collaboration in making this all work. A lot of what we are trying to do is grow the digital health ecosystem by addressing technical fragmentation; the social, cultural, policy and process challenges; and trustworthiness (as opposed to trust alone). In the end phase of this conversation, Eric outlines what he thinks are the priorities for Digital Health, with the three layers in mind, and a need for integrated care via multidisciplinary providers supported by integrated data, with a pivot to person-centric versus a facilities-centric philosophy. Inclusivity of new technologies to reduce non-value added tasks and activities while rationalising better data governance and data capture requirements could certainly beneficially impact on the workforce, lowering workloads and enhancing care delivery as one example. And as Eric points out, 'if we want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together'. Some additional resources from the OECD: OECD reports: Health data governance Integrated care Health system resilience Canadian reports: Expert group on a Pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy Canadian report on doctors in Nova Scotia The views expressed by the participants are personal and not necessarily reflective of their organisations.

Confidence - Build confidence in who you're becoming. This is the identity shift piece. You have to have the identity – of who you're trying to become – in place now. Once you're locked in, then all the pieces and systems out there will conspire to drive you in that direction. 3. Community - Getting around the right people who represent who you are becoming is huge. If you want to be like the 99% that want to keep their job, then don't invest in yourself. But if you want to be the 1% of people who choose to leave, you've got to invest in your community. [23:55] How You Can Add Value to Your Community Focus on how you can add value and that's how you're going to get value. Don't join a mastermind with the mindset of expecting something in return. Value doesn't only refer to financial value either. Whether that's connecting people or becoming a resource of information, don't worry about what you're getting, just worry about what you're giving. Engagement is super important as well. It means contributing in a way that you can best give. If you're not engaging in that community, then you're not going to get anything out of it. [27:32] The Three Layers of Fear People fear uncertainty more than they value happiness. What's underlying that is a fear of failure. But failure is part of the formula for success. It's inevitable and necessary. Without it, you cannot have success. Finally, the fear that underlies all of it is the fear of judgment. Get past this idea that other people are thinking about you when they're not. Once you get past your fear of judgment, your other fears become much less crippling. “You don't grow  for the stimuli you've already survived, you grow for the circumstances you have yet to encounter.", emphasizes Mike Phillips, an expert marketer and content creator, and a professional weightlifter. In this episode, Mike talks all about growth mindset and #musclemarketing, and the three layers to achieve and apply growth mindset, not just in marketing or business, but in any aspects of life. December 2020, during the lockdown, was when it all started for Mike in the marketing and content creating space, and then it just grew rapidly from there. He started by posting content on his LinkedIn feed daily, observed what works and not works, and worked his way to be an expert in growth mindset and marketing from the sales and engineering field of work. Tune into this week's episode of The Business of You for a conversation with host Michelle Griffin and special guest Mike Phillips as he details his Three Layers of Growth Mindset Framework, and why marketing isn't something you do for the present but as an investment for the future.   Quotes: “Trying to grow as individuals, as personal growth or professional growth, I think it's wise to always look to teachers that do it better than us. Now that could be the creators out there that are absolutely crushing it, but it can also be anything in the world around us. There are plenty of examples in the natural world and in society that engaging with these different types of growth, linear, compound, or exponential growth.” (9:01:32-9:23:83)  “The first thing you want to train is to train yourself to observe these functions of growth in the world around you” (11:45:16-11:51:55)  "So now that's another aspect of growth. We think about the removal of things that are part of the process to encourage growth and things that do matter." (12:17:40-12:42:61)  “It's just that growth has seasons. And that we as individuals will also have times of faster and slower growth, but we are still growing.” (13:09:16-13:17:30) “You can learn more from exploring that realm between perceived safe failure and actual maximum ability." (25:17:96-25:26:98) “What do we do to embrace a relationship with failure that will help us accelerate a growth?" (27:34:33-27:40:20) “You don't market yourself for something you need today because marketing is a process that takes time. You market yourself for the opportunities you don't know you'll need in the future. You wind up investing and making those deposits in your brand today so that if you do ever need to make a withdrawal, you've already had that down the road.” (34:41:32-34:58:31) “You should learn to market yourself so you never have to sell yourself.” (38:26:79-38:29:97)   Connect with Mike Phillips: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marketing-muscle/ #MarketingMuscle (on Linkedin) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVoqxs1AEqMcR1UHOMR2E5g Growth Mindset Course: "One Year of Growth" MikePhillips.Online   Connect with Michelle Griffin, Personal Brand Strategist/Founder, BRANDthority: Website: YourBrandYourBusiness.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michellebgriffin/ Get active on LinkedIn: Join the #365 Creators, my community of 800+ global professionals supporting one another as we create content, connection, and community on LinkedIn. Dawn and I are of like mind when it comes to treating addiction: One size does not fit all. That's because there are actually three different layers to addiction, but for some reason this is rarely talked about. We both believe that you not only have to address every layer when formulating a recovery plan, but ALSO have to take into consideration the individual's needs, which can vary greatly person to person. Today Dawn and I will discuss what those layers are, and how they affected our own loved ones' recovery journey. _______________________________________________________________________ You can find Dawn Ward at thefaithtoflourish.com and also on Facebook as 'The Faith to Flourish'. Atomic Habits by James Clear 1. What are Atomic Habits: The 1st meaning of the word atomic is tiny or small. So, atomic habits mean small habits. The 2ndmeaning is that Atoms are the fundamentals units that enlarge any system. Just like atoms improving tiny habits can give us a huge reward. The 3rdmeaning is that an atom is the source of great energy and power so are the atomic habits. If we add all the meanings, we can understand the basic philosophy of the book. 2. Why Tiny Changes Make a Big Difference: As James Clear said in his book: “Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations. Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” Just as the money goes up through compound interest, the effects your habits multiply as you repeat them. James clear says, if you keep improving 1% each day, at the end of the year you will be 37 times better. Conversely, if you are doing 1% worse each day, you will end with almost 0% improvement. 1% better every day for one year (1.01365) = 37.78 1% worse every day for one year (0.99365) = 00.03 3. The Plateau of Latent Potential: Habits do not seem to make a difference until we cross a critical threshold. We expect progress to be quick, but the key aspect of any compounding process is that the effects are delayed until we cross a threshold what James calls as The Plateau of Latent Potential. 4. Forget About Goals, Focus on System Instead: So, what is the difference between Goals and Systems? According to James Clear's words: “Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.” 5. The Three Layers of Behavior Change: According to James: “Changing our habits is challenging for two reasons: (1) We try to change the wrong thing. (2) We try to change our habit in the wrong way.” 6. How to Build a Habit in 4 Simple Steps: James divided the habit building process into 4 stages: · Cue: The cue triggers the brain to start the action. Because it reflects the reward we will get. · Craving: Craving provides the driving force to adopt a habit. · Response: Response is the actual habit or process we adopt to achieve our reward. · Reward: In the end, the reward, for which we adopted a habit. These four steps are called Habit Loop.

Thank you Samara Hernandez ( https://twitter.com/samaramhernandz ) for the intro to our guest today, Monique Woodard ( https://twitter.com/MoniqueWoodard ). Monique is the founding Partner of Cake Ventures. Cake invests in companies that address the needs of a world undergoing massive demographic changes. We break down the three layers of Cake or themes that Monique focuses on, how she thinks about geography and future of work and her learnings as an operator and from 500 Startups. I highly recommend following Monique on Twitter @MoniqueWoodard ( https://twitter.com/MoniqueWoodard ). A book that inspired Monique: The Tycoons ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0805081348/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?creative=9325&creativeASIN=0805081348&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=479c1b0e9bb51a7b14962823c66640fb&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Charles R. Morris Questions I asked Monique: * What was your attraction to technology and entrepreneurship? * What led you to San Francisco? * Why did you decide to become an investor? * What were some of your learnings from your experience at 500 Startups? * What led to founding Cake Ventures? * What particular themes are you focused on investing in? * What's your decision making process or diligence process within each theme. * What has been some of the effects of COVID on sourcing and your due diligence process? * What's one thing that you would change about venture capital? * What's the best piece of advice that you've received? * What's one piece of advice for founders who are currently building?
