Episode NotesLt Gen P. R. Shankar outlines the evolution of India's defense industry and how it is nurturing a growing ecosystem of indigenous production. He highlights that India's armed forces have always been adequately equipped for national defense, the key question being whether it can develop a defence industry that would enable it to act as a regional power. The discussion explores the historical structure of India's defence sector, traditionally dominated by public sector organizations such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It traces the gradual but significant entry of private players into the defence industry, marking a shift towards a more diversified and dynamic ecosystem. Gen. Shankar emphasizes that meaningful reform in procurement processes does not necessarily require more rules; rather clarity of intent, domain expertise, and better coordination among the armed forces, bureaucracy, political leadership, and industry. A key highlight of the episode is the artillery modernization program, which serves as a successful case study of long-term strategic planning and sustained execution, offering valuable lessons for other sectors and weapon systems. The conversation also delves into the relevance of international defense partnerships for deeper co-development and interoperability. Finally, broader reforms such as the introduction of positive indigenization lists, a more robust export policy, and the inclusion of startups and academic institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology, are seen as critical to strengthening India's defense industry. Episode ContributorsLt Gen P.R. Shankar (Retd.) is the former Director General of Artillery in the Indian Army and currently a professor in the Aerospace Department at IIT Madras. He has played a key role in India's artillery modernization and frequently writes on strategic and defense issues. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly being used in classrooms around the world. Last month, British universities were warned to “stress-test” all assessments after new research revealed that “almost all” undergraduates are using generative AI (GenAI) in their studies. Last year, a study by TeamLease EdTech revealed that over 61% of educators in India are using AI tools. All this has given rise to fears that students will likely begin accepting information at face value rather than critically analysing it. Does the use of AI in education affect critical thinking skills? Here we discuss the question. Guests: Arun Kumar Tangirala, Professor Chemical Engineering, IIT Tirupati, and Professor, Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras; Arul George Scaria, Professor of Law, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru Host: Sai Charan Write to us with comments and feedback at socmed4@thehindu.co.in

For decades, they were almost entirely dependent on state funding to keep the lights on.But now the state funding has steadily been drying up. So now, they have no choice but to fend for themselves. But legacy institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IIT Delhi have found a workaround. They are all taking a page out of the Ivy league playbook and setting up their own endowment funds. In this episode we delve into what that means and why it isn't as easy as it may sound. Stay tuned. Meet Santhoshi Sushma Buddhiraju, CEO and cofounder of Autocracy Machinery, a heavy machinery manufacturing company located in southern India. The idea for her company began with a simple question: Why is India, the world's largest consumer, so reliant on imported machinery? Answering that question entailed bold risks, fearless leadership, and personal sacrifice.Santhoshi had a strong foundation to start a business, even one that was extremely male-dominated. She got a world class education at IIT Madras, created a food delivery start-up on the side, received a prestigious internship at Georgia Tech in the United States, and ultimately built her corporate career at HSBC. But solving local problems in her home country of India captured her imagination and fueled her resolve. While most entrepreneurs were shutting down their businesses during COVID, Santhoshi was launching her start-up with a vision to transform India's infrastructure and economy through local manufacturing expertise. According to Santhoshi, India imported $43 billion in machinery in the last financial year alone. “That's huge,” she says, “and imagine being the biggest population of the world, the biggest consumer of goods. And then we realized why are we not manufacturing our stuff and very basic stuff? You have more manpower than anybody can imagine and imagine what magic you can do,” she declares.Santhoshi identified and capitalized on an enormous opportunity. She explains: “Our cities are developing, our ecosystem is developing, and our population is rising. What India is trying to do is build a better utility network – water pipelines, gas, electricity, digital networks, cable, optical fiber networks, all of this to every household. And it all requires machinery. There's a need. There's an opportunity. Why don't we manufacture the machines, machines which we are importing at $150K?” And so she did, manufacturing machinery that was cheaper, faster, and responsive to local needs, first in the utility industry and now in many others.Hear how Santhoshi is breaking down barriers, listening to her customers, relying on her team, and encouraging entrepreneurs to do the same.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Until now, companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google have been the most direct beneficiaries of the AI revolution. But the Nvidia monopoly in the AI chip market is preventing these tech companies from making as much money as possible. Microsoft wants to change that. That's exactly where a team of freshly minted hardware engineers comes in. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 12th of August and here are the headlines. After the US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research on Saturday made a series of allegations against SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, Sebi on Sunday came out in Buch's defence and said the regulator has adequate internal mechanisms to address issues related to conflict of interest, which include disclosure framework and provision for recusal. In the first official reaction from the Ministry of Finance on the Hindenburg revelations against Sebi Madhabi Puri Buch, Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said there is “nothing further to add” by the government on the issue as both the regulator and the concerned person have given the statements. In a powerful display of outrage and solidarity, major government hospitals across Delhi are set to indefinitely halt all elective services from Monday in response to the brutal rape and murder of a young junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Resident doctors protesting in West Bengal on Sunday night demanded a fast-track judicial inquiry into the case, the resignation of the principal, dean, and other authorities, proper compensation to the victim's family, and an apology from the Kolkata police. The case has sparked nationwide protests. After meeting the family of the doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today called for the case to be cracked quickly and said she would demand the death penalty for the perpetrators. “We are trying our best to solve the case. I don't know how this type of incident can happen in a hospital. If there are more accused and all are not arrested by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI — even though their success rate is low." Banerjee also said she would demand the death penalty for the perpetrators. The Ministry of Education today announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2024. IIT-Madras tops in engineering and overall categories in India and IISc Bengaluru is the top university in the country. In its ninth edition, three new categories have been introduced — open universities, skill universities and state funded government universities. The AICTE chairperson, Anil Sahasrabudhe, also announced that the Ministry aims to begin ‘sustainability rankings' from next year. IITs have grabbed the top positions in the top institutes (overall) and the engineering categories. Meanwhile, IISc Bengaluru, JNU and Jamia are the top varsities in India.Bittihotra Mohanty, who was convicted of raping a German woman in Rajashtan's Alwar in 2006, died late Sunday night while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubanwswar. India has seen superlative progress in electrical connectivity, achieving 96.7 percent connectivity to the grid as of 2020 from around 67 percent over a decade ago. For context, the electricity sector can be broadly split between generation, transmission, and distribution. Despite recent progress, electrical connectivity is still racked by problems such as irregular supply and voltage fluctuations, and distribution companies face losses. Much of the electricity generated is derived from coal, which serves to impede our climate goals, and renewable alternatives require energy storage mechanisms that are technologically complex and depend on locally unavailable raw materials. In this episode of Interpreting India, Karthik Ganesan joins Sayoudh Roy to delve further into the issues ailing electrical connectivity in India.Episode ContributorsKarthik Ganesan is a fellow and director for research coordination at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, where he ensures cross-team coherence for CEEW's research direction and imperatives.
