BIO: Harjeet Khanduja is an international speaker, author, poet, visionary, inventor, influencer, and HR Leader. He is an alumnus of IIT Roorkee and INSEAD. He is currently working with Reliance Jio. STORY: Harjeet regrets wasting so much of his life working hard instead of working smart. Though he succeeded in his career, he completely ignored his family and led an unbalanced life. LEARNING: Learn how to delegate so you can have time to focus on other things in your life. You must care for your family and inner self to be more productive. “When you harness everyone's energy, then you can work in a broader environment and grow. When you're happy, you can do more things in life, not just for your business.” Harjeet Khanduja Guest profile Harjeet Khanduja is an international speaker, author, poet, visionary, inventor, influencer, and HR Leader. He is an alumnus of IIT Roorkee and INSEAD. He is currently working with Reliance Jio. He is an SAP HCM consultant, Six Sigma Green Belt, and Assessor for Predictive Index. He has 3 published patents, and his book “Nothing About Business” has been a best-seller on Amazon. Harjeet has been conferred with the HR Leadership Award, Pride of Nation Award, HR Personality of the Year, Global Digital Ambassador, Global Learning Award, ET HR Influencer of 2022, and Top 200 Global Leadership Voices of 2022. Harjeet has been a LinkedIn Power Profile, TEDx speaker, Guest Faculty at IIM Ahmedabad, Board Member of the Federation of World Academics, Member of the CII HR IR committee, and Co-chair of Nasscom Diversity Committee. Worst investment ever The first investment mistake Harjeet ever made was opening a PPF account because his father asked him to. Harjeet kept investing in that account year after year without knowing why he was investing. He regrets never having control over that decision. Harjeet also regrets wasting so much of his life working hard instead of working smart. In every company Harjeet worked for, he'd work himself to the bone trying to prove his abilities. Even though he achieved massive success in every position he took up, his life outside work suffered. Harjeet barely had any time to spend with his family. After all the time and effort he put into his work, Harjeet soon realized his life was not balanced. In 2012, Harjeet started looking at life holistically rather than unidimensional. Now his life is better, and his wife is happier. Lessons learned Your team can solve problems on their own. You don't need to hold their hands constantly; delegate and only assist where necessary. You must care for your family and inner self to be more productive. Andrew's takeaways Life is a balance of opposing forces, and we're constantly making trade-offs. Actionable advice Learn to delegate and trust. It will take time for others to catch up to your quality or delivery standards. But if you don't start delegating, you'll never have time to focus on other important parts of your life. Parting words “It's okay to fail. Just believe in yourself. Whatever you've got, nobody can take it from you.” Harjeet Khanduja

In this podcast interview, we delve into the vibrant start-up ecosystem in India and explore the concept of funding winters. Join us as we discuss with Devansh, a seasoned entrepreneur and industry expert, to gain valuable insights into the Indian start-up landscape and understand the challenges and opportunities faced by start-ups during funding winters, with our host Anurag Manik Start-Up Ecosystem in India: A Thriving Landscape India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing start-up ecosystems in the world. The country boasts a vast pool of talented entrepreneurs, a dynamic market, and a supportive regulatory framework. Let's explore the key aspects of the Indian start-up ecosystem in detail. 1. The Rise of Start-ups in India India's start-up revolution began in the early 2000s, with the growth of technology and internet penetration. Since then, the start-up ecosystem has witnessed exponential growth, fueled by factors such as increased access to capital, a growing consumer market, and a favorable policy environment. 2. Government Initiatives and Policies The Indian government has played a crucial role in nurturing the start-up ecosystem. Initiatives like "Startup India" and "Digital India" have created a conducive environment for entrepreneurship, offering benefits such as tax exemptions, simplified regulations, and access to funding and mentorship programs. 3. Thriving Sectors in the Indian Start-up Ecosystem The Indian start-up landscape is diverse, with ventures spanning various sectors. Some of the key sectors experiencing significant growth include e-commerce, fintech, edtech, healthtech, agritech, and renewable energy. These sectors have witnessed substantial investments and disruptive innovations in recent years. 4. Evolving Funding Landscape Access to funding is a crucial aspect of any start-up ecosystem. India has witnessed a surge in venture capital and angel investments, empowering entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into reality. Several domestic and international venture capital firms, angel networks, and crowdfunding platforms actively support Indian start-ups. Understanding Funding Winters: Challenges and Strategies 5. What are Funding Winters? Funding winters refer to periods when there is a slowdown or reduction in the availability of funding for start-ups. It can occur due to various factors, such as economic downturns, market uncertainties, changes in investor sentiments, or overvaluation concerns. During these periods, start-ups may find it challenging to secure funding for their operations and growth. 6. Impact on Start-ups Funding winters can have a significant impact on start-ups, as they heavily rely on external funding to fuel their growth. The challenges faced by start-ups during funding winters include: Limited access to capital: Investors become cautious and selective about where they deploy their funds, making it difficult for start-ups to secure investments. Extended fundraising cycles: Start-ups may experience longer periods to raise funds, as investors become more cautious and conduct thorough due diligence. Valuation adjustments: During funding winters, investors often demand lower valuations, which can impact the equity stake and overall growth prospects of start-ups. Survival challenges: Lack of adequate funding can pose survival challenges for start-ups, as they need resources to sustain operations and scale their businesses. 7.  Strategies for Start-ups during Funding Winters Despite the challenges, start-ups can navigate funding winters effectively by adopting certain strategies. Here are some approaches that entrepreneurs can consider: Bootstrapping: Start-ups can focus on generating revenue through lean operations and efficient cost management. Bootstrapping allows them to maintain control and sustain their businesses during funding winters. Building strong networks: Developing relationships with potential investors, mentors, industry experts, and fellow entrepreneurs can open doors to alternative funding sources We are a top 10 podcast in India and consistently rank in the top 50 in France, Germany, Tunisia, and Africa. NUGGET CONTEXT Stephen speaks about five underlying beliefs that are at the heart of a Trust and Inspire approach. 1) People have greatness inside of them 2) People are whole in body, heart, mind and spirit 3) There is enough for everyone (abundance) 4) Leadership is about responsibility, not rights (stewardship) 5) My job as a leader is to go first GUEST Stephen M. R. Covey is an American writer and public speaker and the author of the books: The SPEED of Trust, Smart Trust, and Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash the Greatness in Others. He is the co-founder and CEO of a company called CoveyLink Worldwide and former President and CEO of Covey Leadership Center. He happens to be the son of Stephen Covey, the author of the pathbreaking book - 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  In our conversation, we spoke about how Stephen broke away from his father's shadows and created an identity for himself over time as a thought leader by building credibility on the business front. We spoke at length about his recent book - Trust and Inspire. I loved his distinction around being Trust and Inspire in Paradigm but Command and Control in the moment. He also speaks about “Enlightened Command and Control” which gives people a false sense of having evolved their leadership style. Highly relevant piece of work in this world of complexity and possibility.  Published in April 2023. HOST Deepak is a Leadership Advisor and an Executive Coach. NUGGET CONTEXT Stephen speaks about how he initially focused on the business side of things while his father was the ‘larger than life' thought leader. He speaks about how, over time, his insights around the high cost of low trust have emerged and how he has found his voice a thought leader over time. GUEST Stephen M. NUGGET CONTEXT Chris discusses how Roger earned about USD 125 Million in prize money but more than USD 1 Billion in earnings. He says that this multiple is quite rare in Sporting elite circles. Chris speaks about some of Roger's traits as a businessman. GUEST Roger Federer is somebody who needs no introduction. While, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have overtaken him in terms of the overall Grand Slams won, when there is a discussion about the Greatest of All Time (GOAT), all fingers very often still point to Roger. One could attribute that to his fluidity, his charm on and off court, his longevity, his stable family life, and much more.  I had a unique opportunity to engage with Christopher Clarey, a veteran New York Times Correspondent who has been covering Sports at an Elite level for more than 30 years. From Bjorn Borg to Serena Williams. He has recently published the book - The Master: the Brilliant Career of Roger Federer. He gives us a behind the scenes account of Roger's journey starting from his childhood.  We speak about how Roger handled his mental chatter, how he made choices that made him play a long innings, how he handled stress, the role of his parents in shaping his character, how his skills as a businessman are probably better than his skills on the court. We hope you enjoy the 100th episode. Published in March 2023. HOST Deepak is a Leadership Advisor and an Executive Coach. NUGGET CONTEXT Chris speaks about his take on the term – Play to Potential. He also says that whether somebody is playing to his or her potential is a matter of perspective and opinion. He says that Gunter Bresnik (a reputed coach from Austria) thinks that Roger should have won many more Grand Slams and he possibly didn't quite play to his full potential.
