Andrew Buss has carved out a niche for himself as a pop culture expert, with a heavy emphasis on comedy. He has written for publications like Vanity Fair, New York Magazine's Vulture, The Daily Beast, Consequence of Sound, and The Laugh Button, where he served as editor for five years. It also launched the careers of Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Seth Rogen whose careers are all thriving to this day. It further proved that Judd Apatow is now one of the most successful film producers of his generation, bringing the world hit after hit. Superbad remains, to this day, a beloved comedy film for millennials who grew up with it. This is because, unlike other comedies of that era, it embraced the awkwardness of the characters, particularly with someone like Michael Cera. Unlike the cartoonish representations of an 80s comedy like Revenge of the Nerds, Superbad presented itself with depth to the characters that enabled millennials (and other generations) to bond with the movie in a more meaningful way. Lately, you might have heard of something called the Drop Challenge. People taking a sexy look towards the camera, then dropping to a “hot squat” (my term) slowly towards the ground. Heck, the cast of SNL did it recently. Well, it was created by today's guest Atsuko Okatsuka, a gifted, engaging comedian and friend of mine. Atsuko is somebody who comes across as eternally happy and optimistic, but she's had her share of trauma and strife, both personal and familial. Jonah is an old friend from when I first moved to Los Angeles. I'll never forget driving us both to a brutally shitty show WAY far away from where either of us lived. We both had good sets, mostly because the situation was so insane. For example: The stage was a small wooden box with carpeting stapled to it (!). After sharing such a stage, we had no choice to become lifelong friends. Since then he's gone on to co-host and produce “The Meltdown” on Comedy Central and has been the new host of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” for a few years now. He even had the sense to stop doing stand-up comedy (or, as I would put it, he graduated lol). I've been meaning to have him on for a minute and this episode did not disappoint. I call Billy a wild man because he's got that crazy southerner look in his eye onstage, but he's actually a down-to-earth normal guy who says crazy stuff onstage. I'm not sure when we met, but when we did we clicked right away. One reason I have so many comedian friends on the show (other than I know so many) is that they've lived a lot of lives. I first became aware of young comic Jared Goldstein when (back in the dark ages of the lockdown) he and I were both on the same bill of a zoom comedy show. Not sure if you know, but they really sucked ass. However, he had a really good set, and I was like, “Who's this guy?” Fast forward a year, and he's just been named one of Vulture's “21 Comics You Should and Will Know.” I knew he was funny, but what I didn't know is that he's a former child actor. We talked rejection, being bitter or not, online action, and plenty more. Really dug having him on, not only because he was funny and a great guy, but because I think we really annoyed his roommate. Former cheerleader (yep, it's true) Hannah Einbiner blew the f%*k up in the biz. My pal Dana Gould told me she was a funny stand-up, and I said, “Ok cool, I'll check her out.” No sooner did we have that exchange than she landed a huge role on the HBO show “Hacks.” She plays Ava, the reluctant writer/protégé to Jean Smart's Joan Rivers-like Deborah Vance. It's heavy lifting for any actor, but Hannah pulls it off. It's been cool watching someone so nice and funny go so far so soon, and it was fun to have her on the pod. She's great, and I learned a ton about her life, outlook, and processes. My friend Adam Cayton-Holland is a king of Denver comedy, as both the founder of the High Plains Festival and a member of the three-man comedy troupe the Grawlix. The Grawlix created, sold, wrote, and starred in the often slept-on but brilliant teacher comedy Those Who Can't. Adam worked in Los Angeles, but never left Denver, and he lives there today with his wife and two kids. Comedian Chris Garcia grew up in Los Angeles, started out doing comedy in the Bay Area, and now lives here again. In fact, he and his wife live with their baby daughter Sunny in my old apartment! Dave Anthony's podcast The Dollop, with Gareth Reynolds, is an internationally popular podcast that I find hilarious. Shane Torres started doing comedy in Portland, Oregon after moving there from Fort Worth, Texas. He's incredibly funny, and also one of the kindest and realest people I've ever known. Caleb is a comedian/internet sensation/lifestyle expert, IMO. I first learned of him when a friend showed me his videos on twitter, all of which are gut-bustingly funny and very different than anyone else's. Rick Overton is a comic I've looked up to for a long time. He's hilarious, he has an amazing perspective born of a long and storied career, and he's optimistic. The last part of that fascinates me, because it's something I've been grappling with a lot lately. Everything around us, news-wise, seems to veer towards being a shitshow, and it's hard to hold on to hope. Before I had Rick on, I was reminded of a bit he had about laughing in the face of death. Doing that, he asserted, robs death and darkness of their power. Looking back, it wasn't even a bit as much as him making a point before he started his jokes. Anyway, it stuck with me. Amy Miller takes Center Stage this week! Amy Miller was one of Comedy Central's “Up Next” comics for 2018 and was a breakout favorite in Season 9 of "Last Comic Standing." Her Comedy Central Presents set has been viewed over 3-million times on Youtube and Facebook. She was also a featured comic on Viceland's "Flophouse." On "Last Comic Standing," Keenen Ivory Wayans said she had one of the “fiercest jokes he had ever heard.” Originally from the East Bay, Amy found her comedy chops in Oakland and is still a regular at the SF Punch Line and Cobb's Comedy Club. Amy Miller was one of Comedy Central's “Up Next” comics for 2018, and was a breakout favorite in Season 9 of Last Comic Standing. Her Comedy Central Presents set has been viewed over 3 million times on Youtube and Facebook. She was also a featured comic on Viceland's Flophouse. On Last Comic Standing, Keenen Ivory Wayans said she had one of the “fiercest jokes he had ever heard.” Originally from the East Bay, Amy found her comedy chops in Oakland and is still a regular at the SF Punch Line and Cobb's Comedy Club. Her material is personal, political, and 100% authentic. The Laugh Button says “She found a wildly creative way to find empowerment while simultaneously sparking laughter” and Courting Comedy says “Miller juxtaposes an unassuming demeanor with unflinching assurance.” After a move to Portland in 2012, Amy quickly rose to the top of the Pacific Northwest comedy scene, winning Portland's Funniest in Helium's 2015 contest, as well as being voted Portland's Funniest Comedian for 2013 and 2015 in the Willamette Week. She was the first woman to win each position and the only one to win all three. Amy's debut album Solid Gold is available on Kill Rock Stars, and was named one of the top 10 comedy albums of 2016 by the Interrobang.
