Ep618 - Andrew Buss, Journalist & Author ‘I Am McLovin'

Creative Principles

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2025 30:32

Andrew Buss has carved out a niche for himself as a pop culture expert, with a heavy emphasis on comedy. He has written for publications like Vanity Fair, New York Magazine's Vulture, The Daily Beast, Consequence of Sound, and The Laugh Button, where he served as editor for five years. As a journalist, Andrew has conducted interviews with some of the most prominent names in entertainment, including Mel Brooks, Seth Rogen, Nikki Glaser, Conan O'Brien, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Brendan Fraser, Jonah Hill, Bo Burnham, and countless others. In this interview, we talk about his writing and journalism journey, his new book I AM MCLOVIN, the legacy of SUPERBAD. When Superbad was released on August 17th in 2007, it proved itself to be a massive success right out of the gate, especially for those in the film's target millennial demographic. The film wound up dominating at the box office, bringing in $170 million dollars worldwide, against a $20 million dollar budget. It also launched the careers of Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Seth Rogen whose careers are all thriving to this day. It further proved that Judd Apatow is now one of the most successful film producers of his generation, bringing the world hit after hit. Superbad remains, to this day, a beloved comedy film for millennials who grew up with it. This is because, unlike other comedies of that era, it embraced the awkwardness of the characters, particularly with someone like Michael Cera. Unlike the cartoonish representations of an 80s comedy like Revenge of the Nerds, Superbad presented itself with depth to the characters that enabled millennials (and other generations) to bond with the movie in a more meaningful way. Mightys, we have reached the end. After two years and 100 episodes of Might Have Help-ing, I've decided to bring the pod to an end. And you know what? I didn't tell my guest Will Sasso! Why? Because he would have surely cried. Will is an old friend and someone I've always looked up to comedically/performance-wise. He's also one of those notoriously kind guys you hear about here and there in this Biz-buzzy town, so he was (and is) the ideal final guest. We went long on this one, not because it's the last episode, but because it was so damn fun. I could talk to Will for hours and hours until he politely but firmly asks me to get off his porch (he lives near me). Listen, enjoy, and thanks for the memories. I sincerely can't thank everyone who listened, enjoyed, and especially called in, enough. Stay positive, friends, and let's listen to each other's problems. It really, really might help. A funny, self-effacing, yet scathing critic of cinema and fan of low art, the two of us hit it off immediately when I came on his podcast. That podcast? The mega-popular “The Kingcast,” based entirely around the works of Stephen King. On each episode, the guest chooses one of Mr. King's works to discuss. I'm very proud that I got to talk about the movie Creepshow, one of the best (and most fun) horror movies of all time, when my time came. Scott and I talked about post-covid lockdown life, being true to your mental health by giving yourself space, and (most importantly) canned bread. Yep! You read that right. Jonah is an old friend from when I first moved to Los Angeles. I'll never forget driving us both to a brutally shitty show WAY far away from where either of us lived. We both had good sets, mostly because the situation was so insane. For example: The stage was a small wooden box with carpeting stapled to it (!). After sharing such a stage, we had no choice to become lifelong friends. Since then he's gone on to co-host and produce “The Meltdown” on Comedy Central and has been the new host of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” for a few years now. He even had the sense to stop doing stand-up comedy (or, as I would put it, he graduated lol). I've been meaning to have him on for a minute and this episode did not disappoint. In fact, after we taped it, we texted each other throughout the day about how we kept thinking of it. Listen and see why! Brian Simpson is a comic I love/hate to follow at my home club, The Comedy Store. He's deadpan, hilarious, writes great jokes, and is fearless in what he says. I'm MAYBE two or three of those things, so going up after him makes me work (always a good thing for your growth, sometimes not the most fun at the time). We didn't know each other, but I knew I had to get him on the show. The timing was perfect, as he's recently gotten a lot of well-earned shine, appearing on Netflix's “The Stand-Ups” to rave reviews. Brian was a perfect guest for TMH, because he brought a wealth of experience. He was in the army, was homeless for a time, and now makes his living as a stand-up comedian and writer. That, my friends, is what you call perspective! We had a lot of fun on this one, and I learned a lot about my new friend Brian. Thanks, Mightys! Actors are like “I couldn't be a stand-up!” and stand-ups are like “How the hell do you memorize lines?” Anyway, we get along in the end. John is best known for his parts on Speechless and The Big Bang Theory, but has been on a ton of other stuff. This episode was really special because he did it from inside his car. Now, I'm not saying he's living in it and he's having family trouble, but you can (No, don't). This was a fun one, enjoy! THE CALLS: 1) A nice lady without a lot of options hates her job, doesn't have a lot of joy, and wants some change. I first became aware of young comic Jared Goldstein when (back in the dark ages of the lockdown) he and I were both on the same bill of a zoom comedy show. Not sure if you know, but they really sucked ass. However, he had a really good set, and I was like, “Who's this guy?” Fast forward a year, and he's just been named one of Vulture's “21 Comics You Should and Will Know.” I knew he was funny, but what I didn't know is that he's a former child actor. We talked rejection, being bitter or not, online action, and plenty more. Really dug having him on, not only because he was funny and a great guy, but because I think we really annoyed his roommate.  THE CALLS:  1) A man's wife has died and now he's in a secret relationship with her sister. What to do? TES THIS IS A REAL CAR OH MY GOD  2) A caller can't stop getting random boners in the pool. Help!  3) A 24-year-old says he jumps into relationships too fast. Any advice on dating? I've rarely had a better reaction than when I announced he was coming on the show. An added plus is that he's an old friend and a peach of a man. We two dads had a blast on this one.  THE CALLS:  1) a man asks Chad and me, “How do you choose what to repair on your car/house/etc, and what you hire someone to fix?”  2) Erica, since she was a little girl, has been called Eric by others. Recently we took our kids trick or treating for the first time, and before that we spent a weekend in the desert with our families. You might think we have nothing left to talk about, but you'd be wrong. Will is a comedian married to another comedian (the also hilarious Giulia Rozzi) and writes/act on the insanely funny TV show Southside. We talked our childhoods, comedy today, parenthood, failure, and other light topics for your drive to work.  THE CALLS:  1) A nice guy who just got married put the reception aside to save money for a house, but would still like the have one. The problem: His friends live nearby, hers do not. She suggests just having one for his friends. Is that okay?  2) Another guy who just got married is going to Japan for six months. It's heavy lifting for any actor, but Hannah pulls it off. It's been cool watching someone so nice and funny go so far so soon, and it was fun to have her on the pod. She's great, and I learned a ton about her life, outlook, and processes.  THE CALLS:  1) A (fellow) bisexual gal asks, “Can you find fulfilment in a relationship with just one gender?” (Spoiler alert: I answer this one for her) (KIDDING!)  2) A lady feels like her mom's sadness is dragging her down. The last part of that fascinates me, because it's something I've been grappling with a lot lately. Everything around us, news-wise, seems to veer towards being a shitshow, and it's hard to hold on to hope. Before I had Rick on, I was reminded of a bit he had about laughing in the face of death. Doing that, he asserted, robs death and darkness of their power. Looking back, it wasn't even a bit as much as him making a point before he started his jokes. Anyway, it stuck with me. Turns out he's more than a smiling face above the pisser. Who knew?! THE CALLS: 1) Michelle from Morro Bay, California has a hilarious question. LISTEN TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS! 2) A heavy-drinkin' fan wants to know, HOW DOES HE CUT DOWN? 3) A guy who's about to lose his job asks, HOW DO I MAINTAIN COMPOSURE AND NOT FREAK OUT? Thanks, Mightys! You are the wind beneath my wings of silly. Enjoy. Call Matt and ask a question 323-763-0228 New episodes arrive every Thursday via The Laugh Button.
