He spent years playing these sports before a friend introduced him to lacrosse.“I was around 10 years old. He was wearing a lacrosse T-shirt and I just was curious about it,” Buchanan said. After learning more about the sport and finding out his uncles had played when they were younger, Buchanan decided to try it out, and never looked back.“I loved the speed and the excitement and the scoring and the physicality of it,” he said. “I fell in love right away.”At just 5-foot-8, the forward looked up to other smaller, right-handed forwards who he could model his game after. For him, that person was Jeff Zywicki, who had a storied career in both the NCAA and NLL.After Buchanan finished his collegiate career at Robert Morris in 2012, he entered the NLL Draft and was selected with the first pick of the sixth round by the Washington Stealth.“Funny story, I actually ended up beating out Jeff Zywicki for the final roster spot on that team, which was kind of crazy,” he said. “It kind of came full circle.”After playing in only nine games during his rookie season, Buchanan turned to advice he had received from his uncles and cousins while growing up: be a good teammate and lead with your effort.Like many other young athletes growing up in Nepean, Ontario, Kyle Buchanan naturally came from a hockey and baseball family. There are just these traditions here that make it a special place.”In his first year with the organization, Buchanan tallied 19 goals and 57 points while collecting 81 loose balls. He also ranked third on the team with 38 assists during the 2021-22 campaign.Last Saturday, he recorded two goals and two assists in the home opener to kick off the 2022-23 season. For Buchanan, signing in Buffalo was the perfect opportunity to play close to his two young daughters, play with his best friend (former Bandit Kevin Brownell), and play for a historic franchise.“I was on the other side of it for so many years and got to play one or two games (in Buffalo), had some family and friends in town, and it was really cool,” he said.Today, Buchanan looks forward to seeing friends and family at almost every home game.#kylebuchanan#buffalobandits#nationallacrosseleague#chrispomay#livewithcdp#barrycullenchevrolet#wellingtonbrewery https://bandits.com/https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomayhttps://www.cameo.com/chrispomayWant to create live streams like this? Quincy Jones Receives Posthumous Oscar, and Daughter Gives His SpeechAt the Governors Awards, Rashida Jones spoke on behalf of her father, who died earlier this month at the age of 91.Before his death two weeks ago, the musician and producer Quincy Jones wrote a speech he intended to deliver at the Governors Awards, where he would receive an honorary Oscar at the ceremony created by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Sunday night in Hollywood, his actress daughter Rashida Jones delivered that speech on his behalf before a rapt audience.“As a teenager growing up in Seattle, I would sit for hours in the theater and dream about composing for films,” she said while channeling her father, who was a Black trailblazer in Hollywood: “When I was a young film composer, you didn't even see faces of color working in the studio commissaries.”Nominated seven times, Jones was given a different honorary Oscar — the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award — in 1995, back when these awards were still part of the televised Oscar broadcast. To shorten that show, the honorary awards were spun off into their own event in 2009.Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez staked their seats out early while the directors Luca Guadagnino (repping both “Challengers” and “Queer”) and Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) compared notes on film formats. The “Succession” stars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin reconnected on the terrace outside the party; both men are supporting-actor contenders; Strong for “The Apprentice,” Culkin for “A Real Pain.” And the stars of “Emilia Perez,” Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, proved to be popular presences in every corner of the ballroom. The first honoree of the night was Juliet Taylor, who has cast more than 100 films over the course of her career including “The Exorcist,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Annie Hall.” While accepting her Oscar, she described her job as being “able to appreciate actors when they're not all that likable and appreciate directors when they're not easy.”Daniel Craig came out to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to the producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have served as the stewards of the James Bond franchise for nearly three decades. After taking the reins of Eon Productions from their father, Albert Broccoli, the half-siblings produced the last nine Bond films beginning with “Goldeneye,” Pierce Brosnan's first foray in the role, all the way up to Daniel Craig's final Bond outing, “No Time to Die.”-Kyle Buchanan

Hiatus over! When Mad Max: Fury Road came out in 2015, a 30-year gap since Beyond Thunderdome, its breathless and near-universal reception as — already — one of the greatest movies of the decade and — already — one of the greatest action movies of all-time, automatically erased the two-decade lead-up to the film's execution and completion, erasing previous versions and false starts. Yet, once the final studio greenlight came, that only began the film's arduous production. On this episode, Kyle Buchanan talks the oral history book he's written about that epic production, thusly untold and way more epic than previously thought — all leading towards the triumph as one of the best action movies of all time. We discuss:- the silent-movie, low-dialogue inspiration for whole production;- the extremely thorough pre-production, where even cameramen were given extensive audition processes;- what would Mel Gibson in Fury Road really have felt like?- or the in-sequence shooting schedule which focused the million-dollar production on, ostensibly, seconds-long inserts.Also:- how the shoot was bolstered by a crew-member and long-time Max fan named “Toast”;- the intensive storyboarding/writing process,- Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy's (pre-known, pre-excerpted) on-set tension,- and how the next Mad Max film, Furiosa, was implanted and planned from this film, starring Chris Hemsworth as a previous-revealed villain.Kyle Buchanan is a pop culture reporter and serves as the Projectionist, the awards season columnist for the New York Times. Prior, he was a senior editor at Vulture, New York Magazine's entertainment website, where he covered the movie industry. A native of Southern California, he lives in Los Angeles. Blood, Sweat & Chrome is his first book.

Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. One of the greatest action movies of all time is also one of the most beautiful: Mad Max: Fury Road. It was on the top ten lists of 2015 and more than a few best of the decade lists. But making the movie was no walk in the park, and a new oral history by Kyle Buchanan is full of well-researched and entertaining detail about the movie's sometimes insane production process, which involved stops and starts dating back to the 1990s. Buchanan is a pop-culture reporter at The NeW York Times, writing its Projectionist column and interviewing a daunting array of Hollywood talent. The new book is called Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, and it draws on over 125 new interviews, including stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, director George Miller, and a fascinating and wide-ranging selection of other cast and crew. It's a multilayered look at making movies in a changing Hollywood, with all its delays and demands, and of course all the challenges of shooting an apocalyptic action film in the desert. I spoke with Buchanan a few weeks ago about the book, which is published by William Morrow and is available now. And of course, we talk about his new book on Mad Max and the process of writing an oral history.
