The Creator Hub podcast is joined this week by Kashif, film and tv director, Co-founder of Donya and Muslims in Media. In his younger years, Kashif would make stop-motion shorts featuring all of his toys and be in awe of the impact that tv and media had on his point of view. That same intrigue in creating films and telling stories only grew as he got older. Around 2016, Donya production company was born with the mission of centering marginalized peoples' stories. Kashif wanted to flip the script on the usual trauma-filled experiences of people of color that are shown and portray a more diverse range of emotions and journeys. Previously he worked as a video editor, then feature visual FX designer in the industry until he took a sabbatical that led him to watch Hasan Minaj's comedy set in New York City. For the first time, Kashif felt connected to the show through Minaj's cultural references and directness, and he wrote a positive review on Medium. Fast forward to the start of Donya and creating film content and media, Kashif tried his hand at producing live events – some of which were Minaj's 2017 Vancouver Tour and 2021 Kings Gesture comedy special. Film Creator to TikTok Creator While Kashif is very attuned to directing movies and commercials, he (like many other professionals may feel) was most intimidated by the TikTok app itself. He had been making shorts before YouTube even started, and over the years has come to learn the ways in which we falsely use terms like filmmaker, editor, or director interchangeably. As Youtube continued to grow with the addition of Shorts, Instagram with Reels, and TikTok, Kashif decided it was his chance to get ahead of the curve and learn what was really going on. While he's still figuring out exactly what it is about his content that people respond to, his goal is to continue being as authentic as possible. As the algorithm remains ever-changing and slightly abusive, the content Kashif shares over TikTok is aimed at sharing stories of value rather than self-promotion or over-production. Transparency There's something so interesting to audiences about getting a behind-the-scenes look at content creation, securing brand deals, and the ins and outs of how Creators…well, create. It may seem odd and as if the content can't be just that, but Kashif begs to differ. Often those same videos showing the types of DMs sent to brands and securing deals are the same ones that lead to more deals with others. Don't discount the insights and entertainment that your personal journey holds. Desi Standard Time Travel The short film tells the story of a young Indian father who just lost his dad, and gets the chance to travel back in time and fix their last conversation. Through twists, and turns the main character learns to understand his parents with more grace in this British sci-fi comedy-inspired short film. Timing, Prioritization, Brand Collaboration, and Personal Partnerships First thing first, realize that good things take time. Like a student becoming a master, give yourself time without the expectation of something perfect to come from it. Giving yourself permission and the patience to find the balance between slowing down and speeding up will get you further, without burnout. Some of the responsibilities and pressures that come with growing a brand or company are helpful in prioritizing what projects to say yes or no to, and how to accurately value($) your time. Take note of how the big companies and ad agencies are doing regarding partnership, and get creative in how to scale that down for personal projects. Enjoy more of Kashif's content on his TikTok @kashifpasta

As a follow-up to the dating coach episode, where our longtime guest Shreye spoke to us about what he learned from going to a dating coach (Episode 125 if you missed it), he is now back on the show to talk to us about his experience with a style coach named Patrick, who Shreye flew to Scottsdale, Arizona to meet in person with his entire wardrobe in tow. Shreye got Patrick's most extensive package, which covered a style consult that covered the perfect color palette for Shreye's skin tone, a shopping trip where Patrick had already pre-selected clothes for Shreye to try on and get custom tailored if necessary, and a final photo shoot with Shreye's fancy new clothes. Patrick even helped Shreye donate all of his old clothes that didn't fit him well before he flew back. Shreye talks about the evolution of his style journey and why he wanted to take these steps at this point in his life, how his makeover has been received by friends (though of course he doesn't have enough data to prove any kind of causality - if you would like to take part in an informal survey to tell us what you think of Shreye's before-and-after shots, send us an email at imthevillainpod@gmail.com), and his thoughts on whether you should wear Chacos on a first date. He's written on a ton of shows, is currently on a tour headlining all the best hard-for-a-comic-to-break-into comedy clubs, and most recently opened for Hasan Minaj at Radio City Music Hall (!!). During this episode I talk about the concept "What will people think?", how others' opinions of us influence our decisions. Especially people in the Indian community. I also talk about Bollywood movies, Hasan Minaj, Lily Singh and Jay Shetty. How it's difficult to not follow the traditional path of becoming a doctor or engineer and do something different, like something in the arts. Spoiler Alert: I give away the plots to the 3 Indian movies I talk about, "Hum dil de chuka sanam", "Kabhi khushie kabhi Gham" and "Bommarillu" --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Anish is a NYC Queens-raised Bengali that built a career in finance, working for Barclays and Goldman Sachs. While he still wears Ferragamo and advocates for crypto, he's not your typical finance bro. Before leaving his job as a VP at Goldman, Anish started building a second career in standup comedy. He's performed at Gotham Comedy Club, The Village Underground, and at many corporate gigs. He even ran a monthly show, called The Surprise Show, which featured some big names like Hasan Minaj, Jim Gaffigan, and Nikki Glaser. Today Anish has combined his two careers into IPO & Chill, a brand focused on putting out entertaining financial news and content. You've probably seen his TikToks about the best shoes to buy as an intern, or his IG stories about whether you should buy Bitcoin. In this episode, Anish talked about the reasons why people pursue a career in investment banking. He talked about getting money for the first time and about how his attitude around money and his spending habits have evolved over time. He shared the funny story of how a coworker introduced him to stand-up comedy, and how that medium compares to making funny content for social media. Near the end, Anish shares his one tip for living a more intentional life and becoming a better dater.

Do you see people who look like you on TV? Do you think it matters? In this episode, we talk to Freeni Reza, host of the Musings of a Modern Muslim podcast, about representation of Muslims and other minorities in the media. We discuss how Muslims were portrayed in the aftermath of 9/11, and how things have progressed to today with more mainstream Muslims getting the spotlight like Hasan Minaj, both in movies and in the news, and why it is important to have Muslims working behind the scenes as well, not just in public-facing roles. This episode we are drankin’ Whiskey Sours (https://www.beyondreproachpod.com/the-cocktails) , the deliciously tart and (as you will hear) deceptively strong cocktail. This drink was in it’s heyday in the 60s but the recipe is over 300 years old! Cheers y’all, to easy drinking whiskey that keeps the scurvy at bay! ALSO DISCUSSED: Little Beagle Johnson, South Cackalacky, Hasan Minaj, burying the living, Amos & Andy, white nonsense, malarkey, Stephanie’s angry black laugh, Bloody Beaver Podcast, eye rolling sounds, Kenny Rogers, screaming into the void, and Bobby Brown. STEPHANIE explores that time when Eartha Kitt had the nerve to speak her mind about the Vietnam War at a White House ladies luncheon. Her questions & statements directed at both LBJ’s were interpreted as anti-war and very scandalous. They picked the wrong token for this little lunch, it seems! TUX dives into the scandal of Lyndon Baines Johnson’s johnson and his very penis-centric personal life. Buckle up, this story is a big ol’ one in every sense! GUEST “Beezy” is a first-generation Pakistani who grew up on the North side of Chicago near Foster and Damen. He currently works in financial services at an asset management firm, essentially “playing in excel all day.” He once lived with both Caullen and David at an apartment then-newly formed as “BrownTown.” The rest is history… OVERVIEW Since the first ever Bourbon ’n BrownTown recording on the same topic in April 2017, we have witnessed new works in TV, film, music, literature, and other art forms that present an unapologetic, nuanced, multidimensional look at Black and Brown life in America and abroad. BrownTown understands a conversation of this sort can go many ways, incorporating many worldviews. For this episode, they primarily use their personal experiences as Black, Mexican, and Pakistani men to analyze the content and impact of more mainstream projects and media events over the past year. As buzzwords “diversity”, “representation,” and “inclusion” are employed more than ever in media, business, and politics (no exception here), BrownTown dissects where these themes operate, when they can be problematic, and, most importantly, how they can be liberatory in implementation to not only better represent our current social world but work toward towards a more equitable future. BrownTown starts by welcoming and getting audiences acquainted with the little-known third member Beezy. Right off the bat, they get into comparing sending petty work emails to communicating with internet trolls and the difference between racism and racial prejudice amongst marginalized peoples. As Beezy opens up about his upbringing, it helps us understand his perspective regarding pop culture and interactions with diverse groups of people as a young adult. Piggybacking off of a conversation on Black Panther in the Hip Hop 2.0 episode, the gang dives into the takeaways of the film, both within the story itself and the broader cultural impact. From here, Caullen pivots to the Black actors’ struggles to obtain certain “color-blind” roles only after a years of work and validation by mainstream white audiences. David champions the authenticity and underlying message of the animated film Coco as well as the importance of accessible language in film, TV, and comedy. When Beezy positions himself as “anti-woke,” him and Caullen explain how Hasan Minaj’s comedy can be both entertaining to broad audiences, educational with a poignant agenda, as well as culturally relevant to Indian/Pakistani peoples in a way other comedians are not (Do you know what a lota is? Watch this.). Finally, the team zooms out and positions pop culture as a microcosm for our global society. With the resurgent backlash to R. Kelly’s lengthy history of sexual abuse, autocratic rule of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, Chicago’s Black alderpeople shutting out and ignoring young Black activists, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s commendable work in congress, we can understand that representation is by no means the end all be all.
