The Showrunner in television literally runs the show, like a hands-on CEO: In charge of vision, creative (often the head writer), leading (and inspiring) a crew of hundreds, managing multiple agendas from the network to the legal department, marketing and advertisers while putting out daily fires and tapping into the personal magic that earned them the role in the first place.  Sharing all his wisdom on the subject is Jim Biederman, seasoned Showrunner, Executive Producer, Writer and Director specializing in comedy programming with a list of trailblazing credits including Kids In the Hall, the Howard Stern Radio Show, The Whitest Kids You Know, the Onion News Network, The Big Gay Sketch Show and Would You Rather With Graham Norton (where I had the distinct pleasure of being Jim's Talent Executive) This is really and truly a masterclass: Ask questions Listen more, speak less Show respect Protect your staff Never respond right away to the notes from the network Get comfortable with tough choices and difficult conversations Learn to bounce back early from failure TV is global Be curious and learn to work across language and cultural differences We can all earn something from The Joy Act, a standard feature in Chinese programming (it's not what you think!) Successful showrunning is so much about the power of language and how we communicate. Jim's goal is to always make sure that everyone working on the show feels welcome and valued at the table. And this: You don't need to be aggressive about it. You can just say, I think there's another way to solve this problem. (It dawned on me listening to this episode that with the amount of negotiating and compromise required to get a show on the air...Showrunners could be useful mediators in global conflicts.)   Check out more of Jim's work at http://www.jimcotv.com/.

A tight premise excellently executed by one of the Whitest Kids You Know. This taut thriller ramps up to a wacky exploitational movie in such a unique way, it left me grinning from ear to ear. https://youtu.be/1rymTj1BGzY Synopsis Tess, played by Georgina Campbell, travels to Detroit to interview for a job. When she arrives in the middle of the night at her Airbnb rental, she discovers that it is already inhabited by a man that supposedly rented the house from another site. Despite being leery of the man , played by Bill Skarsgard, she comes inside to figure out what went wrong with the rental companies. The man , named Keith, is friendly, but perhaps overly friendly in addition to several other red flags. The longer Tess stays in the house, the more she discovers about Keith and the history of the house, to her detriment. Also, the Mac guy shows up. Review of Barbarian This movie is a wild ride, and honestly a contender for my favorite of the year. It is really a movie divided by two halves. One very grounded in reality with a slow burn building of suspense relating to interactions with strangers. The other, while still not paranormal, enters a heightened bizarro underground realm of debauchery and brutality. https://youtu.be/Dr89pmKrqkI This film reminded me of Malignant in that it pulled off the tone that Malignant utterly failed to deliver on. That being a taut mystery thriller evolving into an exploitational fun fest. The writer/director, Zach Cregger is mostly known from being a straight-man cast member in WKYK. He joins Jordan Peele as Sketch comedy graduate transformed into a horror prodigy When I say that I enjoyed this movie, I mean that I had many times where I laughed in delight about the writing, acting, and direction. I was smiling ear to ear at the end of the film. Score 10/10 https://youtu.be/zUqIv5PvbGk

The relationship between horror and comedy has really exploded over the last few years, especially with filmmakers like David Gordon-Green and Danny McBride developing a new “Halloween” trilogy and former sketch comedy guru Jordan Peele winning an Oscar and becoming one of the most popular directors in modern horror history. The latest convert is Zach Cregger, who first came to fame through his own sketch comedy series called “The Whitest Kids You Know.” It wasn't until he read a book called “The Gift of Fear” that he got inspired to write a scene based on the subject matter dealing with little red flags women are encouraged to recognize when it comes to the toxic behavior of the men around them. That single scene eventually spiraled into an entire idea for a film where a woman arrives at a house she rented only to find it's already been occupied by someone else…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to double check our Air BNB reservations and make a cup of tea as we review the 2022 horror film “Barbarian”…

Your favorite unengaged couple are back with a new episode and we get to meet the most feared wrestler in Denver, "The Low Rider". Evan opens the show by calling out the rudest bartender in Colorado and Laura has the idea of doing a "Slaughterhouse Studios Sleepover". There's a small recap of Evan's recent adventure to a wrestling match/ comedy show, and that leads to the back story of "The Low Rider". The two discuss recent news events like rich people flying to space, The Nevermind baby controversy, and a man in SC wins the lottery twice in two weeks. Due to a major loss recently in the Sketch Comedy scene, Evan feels obligated to talk about Trevor Moore and plays a few of his favorite sketches by The Whitest Kids You Know. Laura and Evan then do a walk through of what Laura would do in a break-in scenario and we learn Laura would just leave out a window, but "Low Rider" would defend the house. Laura then gets spooked when she hears a noise outside of the house so she starts talking about books she used to read that made her scared as a kid. Evan ends the podcast with a few videos that he's selected specifically to play for Laura and the two also discuss their recent experience at the RESET Campout celebration of Music where Evan took too many drugs and Laura wanted to fall asleep by midnight like an old woman.

"Bobcat Goldthwait came to the show with the same fear I did," On this episode of Employee of the Month, comedian Kevin McDonald shares what it is like to be judged both about how you write about your life and lived it. We spoke about his one man show as well as the love of being part of a group and loneliness of no longer being one of the cool kids. In their twenties, Kevin McDonalds and Dave Foley, darlings of the sketch comedy world, described themselves as "punk rock," as Kids in the Hall, which began in Canada, became one of the first sketch comedy shows on Comedy Central and HBO and now working with a protege Trevor Moore from the sketch group The Whitest Kids You Know. We spoke about Kevin's relationships with Mike Meyers, Jerry Seinfeld, and Dom Deluise. Kids in the Hall still performs. Kevin also hosts his own podcast Kevin McDonald's Kevin McDonald Show, and appears in films and TV shows, including Sorry for Your Loss with Justin Bartha and FX's Man Seeking Woman by fellow Employee of the Month alum Simon Rich. Two weeks in a row, posting on time? Could the 90’s kids be overcoming their inner slacker? Probably not. This week we’re a bit more focused on books then usual opening up talking about Steve Martin’s (@SteveMartinToGo) biography, Felecia Day’s (@feliciaday) has a new one out and Brian totally recommends  The Nerdist Way.  After talking about Ron Howard’s finest film ever, Willow, we remember we have a podcast and need to do an intro. Grand Theft Auto trolling, Real life vs Internet life with the Whitest Kids You Know. COD Remember, 90’s Kids is rated PG-13 at minimum and risesdepending on the mood of the hosts or their whiskey intake. Aaron is not a pirate, he just has a gold earring and is oddly knowledgeable about torrents. Military Science Fiction is Aaron’s focus this week referencing the great Heinlein, David Weber’s Honor Harrington, John Ringo and the mobile suit. Joss Whedon continues to be an inescapable influence when talking about science fiction and we say what we liked and disliked about Dollhouse. Other recommendations for shows from Brian this week are: Almost Human, Forever, and Black Flag Aaron has never finished watching Fargo and you can’t make him. Brian recommends the show highly. Chaos on the Bridge! Bill Shatner has a new documentary out talking about Gene Rodenberry’s influence on TNG. We stack Shatner up versus other celebrity twitters and agree we’re sadly done with George Takei. Stephen King is an amazing storyteller that neither Brian nor Aaron can actually finish or read. But we love the movies, miniseries and shows they make from his work.
