In our episode recorded the day after the devastating 2024 election, we talk about Little Women author, Louisa May Alcott. Feminist, abolitionist, creative QUEEN! Tess takes us through her unique childhood, into her young adult life working too many jobs to even count, and then her success as an author, all while mourning her childhood. This episode was full of a lot of tears and vulnerability, but we wanted to show up and talk about a woman who kept fighting for what she believed is, against all odds, in the 1800s. This episode is for the spinsters. Dame Tracey Emin is one of the most famous artists and leading figures of the Young British Artists movement of the 1990s. Hers is a uniquely provocative, confessional style which confronts issues such as trauma of abortion, rape, alcoholism and sexual history. In recent years Tracey has focussed on painting and she has just published her first in-depth exploration of her painted work, simply called Paintings. Anita Rani talks to her about that and her latest exhibition, I followed you to the End, on now at the White Cube gallery in London.Nikki Doucet has been called the most powerful person in English women's football. Healthwatch England did research with women who were reluctant to accept NHS invitations for screening and found that 73% would do an at-home test instead. A trial done by King's College, London earlier this year found that if self-sample kits were available on the NHS, 400,000 more women would be screened per year.

On lui aurai menti ? Based on Louisa May Alcott's timeless novel, Little Women follows the lives of the March sisters: romantic Meg, spirited Jo, loving Beth, and tenacious Amy. The play adaption chronicles the sisters' childhood in the 1860s as they strive to be kind, intelligent, and imaginative young women. But as adulthood approaches, each sister must negotiate her private ambitions with society's expectations. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class, and personal tragedy, Jo March comes to write her greatest story: that of the March sisters, destined to be four imperfect little women.

Jo pushes boundaries in her day-to-day about what it means to be a woman and in this episode her point of view is the main focus. We've all had that one book character growing up that resonated with us more than anything (refer to Mia wearing the Katniss Everdeen braid to middle school every day for a year). In today's episode, Karly & Mia will discuss the book characters that shaped them as the women they are today and how they related to their journeys. Special shoutout to Hermione Granger, Elizabeth Bennett, and Jo March for being the bookish, independent, badass babes they are. And we KNOW y'all can relate to Bella Swan entering a sad girl autumn depression spiral when she got dumped. Of course, Karly & Mia have a rant prepared and will be discussing their personal character development, starting from being confused as fuck post-grad, ditching the rat race of your 20s, and just simply doing things for the plot until further notice. Happy reading besties!

An Alcott protagonist even more trans than Jo March? It's more likely than you think. Lou's 1876 sensation story "Enigmas" features a young man who's hired to spy on another young man - a man who is short and delicate and rather young-looking, all things considered. (See where this is going?) Our spy is swiftly overtaken by sexual attraction to the man he's been hired to report on. Before the story's over and the spy is unmasked, Alcott will take the gender binary and fold it into a Mobius strip. Here to dive deep into this delightful bit of Alcottiana is Alice Rutkowski, chair and associate professor of English at SUNY Geneseo. She often teaches the courses Literature and the Civil War, the Queer Nineteenth Century, Safe Zone Train-the-Trainer, Feminism and Pornography, and Major Authors: Melville, among others. Her research centers on the Civil War and Reconstruction as well as queer theory and trans politics. In 2013, she founded the LGBTQ Issues Working Group at SUNY Geneseo, and she's the coordinator of the college's Safe Zone Network. Our cover art is by Mattie Lubchansky. It interpolates the cover art for Bethany C. Morrow's book "So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix," with permission from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. It also interpolates the cover art for Hena Khan's book “More to the Story,” with permission from Simon & Schuster. Our theme music is Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major. We're watching 25 of the best Christmas movies that we haven't seen, according to the internet (sort of) and this time it's LITTLE WOMEN. "What!?! Little Women again?!?!?" you say. First of all, calm down. Secondly, this is the newer 2019 version directed by Greta Gerwig. Her second movie and both of her movies were nominated for best picture!!!! Jeez. She's good. Let's see if this movie is good. _________________ LITTLE WOMEN (2019) synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes: In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Their oldest sibling, Meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together. _________________ The movies we're going to watch, probably (in no particular order) (and one of them won't make the cut because we added 8=Bit Christmas) MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947) THE PREACHER'S WIFE (1996) BEST MAN HOLIDAY (2013) JOYEUX NOËL ("Merry Christmas") (2005) CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945) WHITE REINDEER (2013) A CHRISTMAS TALE (2008) MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS (1934) TANGERINE (2015) Movies watched so far (in a particular order) WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (1995) DR. “But how could you live and have no story to tell?” — Fyodor Dostoevsky On this episode Katie explores the importance of living out a cohesive narrative - how stories transform our lives and give them their deepest meaning. She shares how Jo March changed the way she viewed her own life and the story she was living. What is the soundtrack of your life? Who are the characters? "Be the heroine of your own life, not the victim." Some inspiration and conviction to live out beautiful stories. More at: www.bornofwonder.com Music: Blue Dot Sessions Phillip Levine on Lowell and Berryman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9CLUCuX90w  To Autumn by John Keatshttps://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44484/to-autumn  "Living the Story of Your Life" https://www.bornofwonder.com/home/living-the-story-of-your-life  Richter Recomposed: Autumn 1

Another oceanside chat for people who enjoy them. Apparently quite a few people enjoy them!I get started talking about a pen friend and a phone friend, good stuff and various reasons things in communications have been clogged. General pep-talk about the current upbringing in kids to the previous upbringing I experienced with pretty crappy distractions that weren't as bad as now, but still pretty bad. I make it very clear here that I never wanted a parasocial relationship with my listeners. I wanted a social one. And? I still do!However much the technology changed to alter anyone's sociability? It didn't change mine! Why letter writing is very, very, important, even now. How the friends I've finally made in this have rewarded me with great company. (The whole reason I began this series.) A little study time with a DS episode, a wee, wee bit of Magda... and then: “*Spoiler*”: The phases of Quentin Collins, very basic: 1969; Evil Ghost (dead), 1897; Playboy (alive), Killed (dead), Zombie (dead/alive), Not Zombie (alive), Werewolf Curse (still alive), Magic Portrait takes curse and then he is immortal (indefinitely alive). Then fun chat about Kitty Soames. More on the topic of the non-canon romance, Julia/Barnabas phenomenon. Very calmly expressed. As well as my experience with healthy rejections and unhealthy reactions over the years. (A little more Jo March too.)Sprinkled in this are thoughts on a new "hero" of mine: Tim Wu. (I'm just not sure where all I mention him, pardon.)I wrap up with sober thoughts over more concentration on maintaining the help, pulling away from commercial sites, and focusing more on personal life, correspondence and friendship.

For anyone who wanted another explanatory ramble: You got it! Technical problems in both story and audio building of new Pit radio drama episodes. The convincing spell of social media (of course!) with the double-whammy of a belief non-canon pairings actually happened on the (DS) show. Much comparison to “Little Women” is involved. How Captain Daniel Gregg may also feel about a “kudos” or “like” button. Sharing mutual concern between myself and other fans of “The Ghost And Mrs. Muir”.More pride for John Karlen staying away from The Internet along with pen pals helping me break the social media addiction: “Good job!” Why hate a character for not reciprocating another, such as Jo March or Barnabas Collins? (It's like blaming Christopher Columbus for the misinformation someone else told you about him.) Updates on the marriage novel and a little banter about the characters of Barnabas Collins and Josette duPres. (Please pardon Munsters references here… or… don't! ;)Tips and memories about social media of olde. Know the difference between a waste-of-time and saving-time and know the difference between canon pairing and non-canon pairing. Working out what is coming up with Dr. Julia Hoffman and Professor Stokes in the radio drama episodes 21 and 22. Gratitude and great appreciation for pen pals; both maintained and adrift. “We pulled through. We made it!” Bless you all!

The guys tread on hallowed ground, speaking of the feminine genius behind Little Women: the Oscar-nominated film, the literary classic, and the cultural legend of Jo March, feminist icon. Along the way they avoid a pit of toxic masculinity, snooze beneath a woke tree, and arrive at the home fire of family life (and bar the door to the cold winds of childless existentialism).
