In this episode Alain and Adam have a conversation with Pete Greig. Pete is the bewildered founder of the global 24-7 Prayer movement, the Senior Pastor of Emmaus Rd church, and a director of Waverley Abbey. He is also an award-winning author and host of the Lectio365 daily devotional. They explore the profound value of scripture, its particular transforming power in this cultural moment and why praying the bible is so important.“The God Story: Encountering Unfailing Love in the Unfolding narrative of Scripture”. Is a retelling of the Biblical story aimed to help those who are familiar with the Bible become increasingly fascinated and those unfamiliar take a slow curious journey into God's unfailing love and purpose throughout history. Les Beauchamp served as the Lead Pastor of Lifegate Church for three decades and is now the pastor of leadership development. He's a passionate Jesus follower who has worked diligently in the city of Omaha over the past couple of decades to see more people come to Jesus. Through his past with Mormonism, he realized that Christianity is the only answer. To learn more about the podcast or access the show notes, visit www.redletterpodcast.com.Today's episode partner is FiveTwo. The FiveTwo team has grown healthy churches for over thirty years. They understand how to grow churches in a rapidly changing culture without burning out staff and lay leaders. Every major church denomination in the U.S. has experienced a decline since the 1960s, a trend the pandemic didn't initiate but rather accelerated. What are we, as people who love the local church, to do about this reality?FiveTwo has spent the last four years identifying the four key cultural trends thriving churches address. And they've helped countless churches actually address these trends and THRIVE. They've put all their learnings along with case studies into a free resource which you can download at fivetwo.com today. Discover how well your congregation is managing these forces and what you can do to grow. Also, don't miss my FREE webinar with Bill Woolsey, Founder and President of FiveTwo. We'll discuss those four trends in detail and discuss how churches can use these trends to grow their churches. What can we learn from the early Celtic Christian saints who brought the gospel to Scotland and Northern England: St. Patrick, St. Aidan, St. Columba & St. Cuthbert? These were the wandering & worshipping monks & missionaries, the peregrine pilgrims, devoted to prayer, justice and sharing the good news amongst the pagan tribes. And what about the Early Church Fathers & Mothers or the Nestorians who travelled deep into Asia?Matthew Burden, our guest in this episode, is the author of a fascinating new book called Missionary Motivations: Challenges from the Early Church. He grew up in Brazil, spent time in Africa and now pastors a church in Maine, USA.We discuss the attractional nature of the Desert Fathers, inaugurated eschatology, Christus Victor & much more!____________________________________________________________________________________To connect with Wycliffe Bible Translators, click here (UK) or here (USA).To connect with Matthew and to see the books that he's written, visit his blog here.To hear a brand new uncut, unplugged album, written and sung in caves, mountains and on beaches over the last few weeks while on a Celtic Pilgrimage from Iona to Holy Island (with 247-Prayer's Pete Greig,) check out Rich Dawson's Pilgrim Songs here on Spotify or wherever you listen to music online. To follow their journey and to access a 21 day devotional about the Celtic missionary monks, check out the Lectio365 app (11th June - 2nd July)._________________________________________________________________________________Do get in touch if you have any questions for Matt or for any of his guests.matt@frontiers.org.ukYou can find out more about us by visiting www.frontiers.org.ukOr visit www.frontiers.org and select from one of our national offices. Healthy faith involves talking to God about others—steadfastly, watchfully, and thankfully—and talking to others about God—wisely, graciously and saltily. All of these behaviors flow out of a firm grasp of the Gospel of Jesus, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.Resources:- Molly Worthen on the Gospelbound podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0CwAeiZm4EasJfNFJxikh5?si=-2DgXZqfQ6S1ze7iJ5Ujmw- Lectio365 app on the Apple App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lectio-365/id1483974820
In this next sermon in the Eastertide series, Stations of the Resurrection, Fabs preaches from John 20:1-2 and 11-18, where Jesus meets Mary Magdalene. John 20:1-2, 11-18 www.thevineaustin.org REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. What has stayed with you from the sermon- either as encouraging, confusing, or something you are struggling with? 2. Read John 20:11-18. What do you notice in these words today? 3. Consider this question from the Lectio365 app: In what ways might past disappointments or prior expectations be obscuring the things Jesus is doing? 4. What are some areas where "it is still dark?" What makes it hard to imagine restoration and resurrection in those areas, or even what it might look like? 5. Are there stories or identities that you are associated with (good or bad)? And what would it feel like to be seen for who you are beyond these things? 6. Why do you think it is so hard for us to walk in and truly believe what God says is true about us: that we are valuable and loved? What might look different in your life if this felt 100% true.

4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,' and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. We have a tricky relationship with control. It is true God gives us agency, and we are responsible to steward that well. However, our agency is limited. We cannot control nearly as much as we would like. So we strive and cling to control, and when the illusion of our control is broken we either cling grasp all the more for power or we resort to deflated inactivity. This year in the season of Lent, we will experiment with surrendering control. In this video, we begin with an interview with pastor and author Mandy Smith. Mandy is the author of a wonderful book, Unfettered that explores our obsession with power and paints a beautiful picture of a childlike faith. Then, we consider our relationship with control and begin the crafting of our experiments. The handout for crafting an experiment can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g3E6vILmYsBy8sjQX400xa_y1dUb2fvR/view?usp=share_link The form for letting us know if you have organized a group or would like help getting connected can be found at https://forms.gle/RbWoDqxcRDAS5rdM6 The guided practice resources mentioned are the apps Pause, Lectio365, and Pray as You Go, as well as the guided daily office. Today is Ash Wednesday, the 22nd of February, and the first day of the Season of Lent. For the next forty days leading up to Easter, we will take time for reflection and repentance, using the Lord's Prayer as our guide. For more information on this series, we recommend listening to our previous episode titled: An Introduction and Invitation. Call to Worship: Lamentations 3:25-26 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. Passage: Matthew 6:6-34 Blessing: Isaiah 58:11 The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Have you ever thought, "I'm not very good at praying?" Today's guest, Pete Greig felt the same way and out of this longing he developed the 24-7 Prayer Movement, which has now reached more than half of the nations on earth. Pete is a pastor, author, and mentor to many. He approaches the topic of prayer in a way that is both inviting and challenging. As we head into this season of Advent, Pete reminds us of the importance of prayer and gives practical advice on how to take the next step in. Pete is also the founder of The Prayer Course, he contributes to Lectio365 daily devotionals, and is the author of How to Pray: A Simple Guide for Normal People *** Stay connected with Greg on social @gregholder_ and check out today's show notes!
At the end of the first week of reflections, inspired by Sara and Sam Hargreaves' Worship in the Waiting, from Engage Worship, Andrew also borrows from a reflection on Lectio365 on Monday 23 November, as we reflect on what kind of king we wait for in Advent. Artwork by Jon Tyson on Unsplash
