This week: why is economic growth eluding Labour? ‘Growing pains' declares The Spectator's cover image this week, as our political editor Katy Balls, our new economics editor Michael Simmons, and George Osborne's former chief of staff Rupert Harrison analyse the fiscal problems facing the Chancellor. ‘Dominic Cummings may have left Whitehall,' write Katy and Michael, ‘but his spirit lives on.' ‘We are all Dom now,' according to one government figure. Keir Starmer's chief aide Morgan McSweeney has never met Cummings, but the pair share a diagnosis of Britain's failing economy. Identifying a problem is not, however, the same as solving it. As Rachel Reeves prepares her Spring Statement, ministers are bracing themselves for cuts in day-to-day spending as the public finances deteriorate. Is austerity back? Michael and Rupert joined the podcast to discuss further. (1:02) Next: survival of the fittest vs seduction by the hottest Biologist and Conservative peer Matt Ridley writes about the concept of sexual selection in the magazine this week, explaining that evolution might not just be driven by survival of the fittest but also by section by the hottest. This, he says, would explain some of nature's most colourful oddities, particularly within birds, as outlined in his new book Birds, Sex and Beauty. Charles Darwin proposed this as a later part of his evolutionary theory, but it caused a rift amongst his contemporaries – why is it a controversial concept? And could it be true for other species such as humans? Matt joined the podcast alongside David Puts, Professor of Anthropology and Psychology at Penn State University. (19:13) And finally: what makes historic murders so fascinating? Historian and author Hallie Rubenhold's new book, Story of a Murder: The Wives, the Mistress and Dr Crippen, retells the famous murder case from the perspective of the women involved. Lisa Hilton declares it an ‘intellectual adventure' in the lead book review in the magazine this week. But why do these cases continue to capture our imaginations, decades and even centuries later? And, whether as victims or as accomplices, what makes women such compelling subjects in historic cases like these? Hallie joined the podcast alongside the historian and broadcaster Alice Loxton, author of Eighteen: A History of Britain in 18 Young Lives. (30:40) Presented by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

To poet, playwright and writer Aphra Behn, the tale of a runaway aristocrat's daughter Lady Henrietta Berkeley, her scandalous affair and equally dramatic subsequent trial was rich material for some of the most outrageous and bestselling political fiction of the 17th century. However, Behn's own life may have been equally as exciting. Speaking to Emily Briffett, author Lisa Hilton untangles the stories of these two women at the heart of her new book, The Scandal of the Century, to highlight what they can reveal about the lives of women at this time. Состав квартета уже знакомый и похож на предыдущий альбом More Than Anothe Day, который я обозревал. © 2023 Lisa Hilton & Ruby Slippers Productions Igmar Thomas - trumpet Luques Curtis - bass Rudy Royston - drums Lisa Hilton - piano СЛУШАТЬ АЛЬБОМ - https://album.link/i/1706162632 ПРЕДЫДУЩИЙ АЛЬБОМ - https://t.me/discor/5921 Лучший трек альбома в плей-листе JAZZ по-русски 7 на AppleMusic и Spotify Поставь лайк ❤️ и подпишись на канал JAZZ по-русски https://t.me/discor #lounge --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

Why are our expectations of food so unbelievably high these days, and is the path to clear skin, boundless energy and fantastic immunity really paved with spiralized veggies, massaged kale salads and grass-fed beef?  Why are we suddenly turning our backs on foodstuffs that we have eaten for thousands of years?  Is "clean eating" really the modern, healthy and sustainable way to feed ourselves, or is our intolerance to gluten and dairy simply the product of our affluence?  Food means so much to us as individuals, as families, as cultures and as a planet, and in this episode, we wanted to ask the big questions about what our new obsession with a very prescriptive way of eating means about us as people in the larger sense.  In a time when so many of us are feeling tribal and untrusting of viewpoints we don't agree with, the way we eat should not be another cause of division. In this episode, we speak to restaurant critic, historian, biographer and novelist Lisa Hilton, who shares our frustrations with the clean eating movement, and who has a love of food as entertainment, pleasure and joy.  Together we ponder how the Renaissance occurred when all of Italy was bent double with gluten-inflamed guts, why women in particular are afraid of food, and how we can rekindle a love of simple, inexpensive and healthy home cooking that doesn't chain modern, busy, badass women back to the stove.  Go grab a glass of wine and tune in for an episode that is just as essential for the wellness-fanatic as for the wellness-sceptic.  We have a feeling this episode is going to make you FEEL THINGS; be sure to find us on social and let us know what you think!  And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show and leave us a rating in iTunes; it really helps listeners find us!

In a new two-part episode, This Writing Life meets Lisa Hilton: journalist, historian and novelist. Her 15 year-career has produced five works of non-fiction, and three of fiction. Yet it took just one book to make her name, albeit under the thin veil of LS Hilton. Published in 2016, Maestra was a marmite erotic thriller, that provoked controversy, accalaim and headlines across the world. Rejected by Hilton's own agent who found it 'disgusting', and then by almost every English publisher, it found a home first with a film agent, and then with the up and coming Zaffre Press. 50 Shades of Grey, but cut with American Psycho and Patricia Highsmith, it told the coming-of-rage tale of Judith, an ammoral art historian-turned-call-girl -turned-international-swindler-murderer-sex-kitten. It is unnerving, gripping and darkly funny in equal measure. The challenge facing This Writing Life: how long can we talk to Lisa Hilton about her career without mentioning her succès de scandale? Find out by listening below.

We’re discussing the love hate relationship with reality TV this week and why you hate reality TV, except for the reality TV you secretly love. You may start off thinking it’s a waste of time, but then addiction hits and it becomes like visual nicotine. Even though we all know reality TV does not indeed imitate reality, do we really? Shows like Teen Mom, Sister Wives, and basically anything from MTV nowadays rates so well. But as we scratch our heads wondering what these names mean, we also ask our selves ‘WHY’? With the help of a Kardashian fan, Lisa Hilton (no known relation to the Hilton sisters), blog queen of reality TV, Emma Ashton, one of our regular commentators, Susan Werkner, and our special caller, Michael, we uncover this particular mystery of the universe with our usual flair for irreverence and entertainment. Tune in now. Essential Learning Points from this Episode: Sister Wives is not a show about wives who also happen to be sisters – for more information, click here. Reality TV is entertaining and voyeuristic, which is why we hate to love it so darned much Important Links & Mentions from This Episode: Emma Ashton’s blog Reality Ravings Susan Werkner’s Interactive Investor See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
