It's been called an epidemic but also Georgia's most solvable problem. We're talking about the fact that according to the Georgia Department of Education, only about a third of most children in Georgia are reading on grade level by the third grade. That has ramifications on the future as experts say it won't support the workforce and Georgia's growing economy. Joining us to talk about the new Georgia Literacy Council and the work being done right now  is Scott Johnson, chairman of the Georgia Literacy Council, and Dr. Gary Bingham, a member of the council who  also serves as director of the Urban Child Study Center and a professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Georgia State University. Support the show

Brian also is a Minister at the Pursuit Friends Church in Northeast Ohio. Rabbi Mark and Brian talk about the intersection of his passions and podcasts. He unpacks his church motto Pray, Love, Live on Mission. The phrase was derived from the great commission where Jesus called his followers to reach out to others that need God. Finally they discuss the importance of faith when it comes to believing in the accuracy and infallibility of Scriptures.   Jane Powell works with the Literacy Council of Washington County. The council offers language classes to a large range of adults who need help with their literacy. She works with adults helping them in reading, writing and math with both native English speakers and with non-native speakers. Jane discusses what lead up to joining the Literary Council. What seemed to be her under qualified, second choice in the Literary Council quickly became her life.   Many students found the Literacy Center through the local community college who recommends their services to students who fail to meet the literacy requirements to under college. Jane covers the possibility of a stigma around illiteracy and why/how these notions should be dispelled. Jane shares that the  literacy program doesn't just stop within the building but Powell reaches out to schools as well as prisons.   You can find out more information about the Hagerstown Area Religious Council at harccoalition.org. Happy 2020! Welcome to the 3rd episode of season 4 of the Literacy Quebec Podcast! In this week’s episode we recorded our regular book club at the LQ office. We discussed the book Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, which fits perfectly in with the topic we wanted to launch into 2020 with How to Fail Successfully in 2020. We also talk about Cal Newport’s Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World to learn about how to reduce busywork and increase purposeful work. Some of the questions we discussed after reading the section of Dare to Lead were: 1) Did you make any resolutions for 2020? Why/why not? 2) What are some markers of success to you? 3) What is failure to you? 4) Are failures the opposite of successes? 5) How can failures be useful to you? 6) Brene Brown talks a lot about the connections between failure, shame and vulnerability. What did you think of her tools for self-reflection? 7) What are some of your own Shitty First Drafts? Why did we choose this topic of Failure (a dirty word!) when everybody else is taking about Success and making New Year Resolutions? Well, through our discussion about how we each felt about failure, some of the failures in our own lives and learning new ways to deal with failure when it happens, we found that failure in almost every case was necessary in order for us to form deeper relationships with people, deeper and more meaningful work in our careers, becoming more stable and emotionally resilient, making better decisions in life, and living in a more content, grateful, happy state. 051 Julie Kramer–Adult Literacy Council Volunteers Teach More Than 1,700 Adults to Read and Succeed Yearly Julie Kramer is high on the Nashville Adult Literacy Council (NALC) for its two main goals: Teaching American adults to read and teaching English skills to adult immigrants. Working with classes and through mentoring, nearly 600 volunteers teach more than 1,700 adults each year to read and succeed.   Isolated by the need for a new language, immigrants can turn to NALC for assistance. Becoming more proficient enables newcomers to gain access to the larger community by being able to talk to and understand grocers, doctors, potential employers, and so forth. Learning English allows parents to help their children with school. And the NALC’s citizenship classes facilitate the family’s move toward citizenship.   Not being able to read also isolates thousands of adult Americans. Nearly one in eight Nashville adults can’t read at a functional level. Inability to read labels, complete an application form, comprehend a bill, understand a child’s grade card or homework, and so on limits persons’ economic quality of life and also affects their physical and emotional health and family and social relationships. Depending on others to read is both inefficient and humiliating. NALC classes offer remedial reading for those seeking to enter high school equivalency classes. Volunteers make the difference. Find out more about the program, apply to volunteer, or check the monthly training schedule at nashvilleliteracy.org or email info@nashvilleliteracy.org. The Nashville Adult Literacy Council teaches 1700 adults each year to read and succeed Through the eyes of Jo-Ann Heidenreich the Nashville Adult Literacy (NALC) seems like a moveable feast! After working as a teacher and administrator for Metropolitan Davidson County Schools for thirty years, Jo-Ann began a second career as an educational consultant in more than twelve states including Tennessee. Now retired, she is volunteering at NALC—a natural choice with her previous background. The Nashville Adult Literacy Council provides free services to their learners (both adult citizens and adult immigrants), offering classes for basic literacy (reading and writing), classes in English-language basics, GED classes at probation and parole offices, citizenship classes to prepare learners for the exam, and workplace literacy classes tailored to individual employer needs. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the program. www.nnic.org Susan Robinson, Executive Director of the Northern Nevada Literacy Council a 501 (c) 3 community-based, not-for-profit organization which offers education and training for adult learners is our guest today. To date, hundreds of students have successfully obtained their diplomas with students passing every day. NNLC students are getting better paying jobs, enrolling into college and/or pursuing a career in the trades. The doors of opportunity are now wide open for them! The numbers don’t lie. Low literacy is a global crisis that affects all of us. That's why it's so important to understand the issues and confront the facts head on. Only then can we can stand together to fight for change. In the United States, 14% of adults read at or below a 5th grade level. 29% only read at the eighth grade level and among those with the lowest literacy rates, 43% live in poverty. Let’s boil it down to another startling fact. 75% of state prison inmates did not complete high school or can be classified as low literate. From a health perspective, low literacy adds an estimated $230 billion dollars to the country’s annual health care costs. From a workforce perspective, low literacy costs the United States about $225 billion dollars each year in non-productivity and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment. www.CheriHillShow.com www.SageIntl.com www.NevadaRealEstateRadio.com
