Many companies are claiming to be eco-friendly and send that message in their marketing campaigns to attract more consumers. Lizzie Horvitz, CEO and Founder of Finch, said that there is a drastic growth for companies that invest more in sustainability than companies that don't. Many consumers tend to purchase products that are sustainable to support eco-friendly initiatives. The Gen Z market is one of the largest groups of consumers today. They had no buying power five years ago but now, most products are created and marketed based on their preference, and this group cared more about sustainability and eco-friendly goods than most generations. Thus, If you want to hear more about sustainability in a business, sit back and listen to what Lizzie has to say about sustainability and running a more eco-friendly company. Who is Lizzie Horvitz? Lizzie Horvitz received her MBA in Environmental Management at Yale University. She focused on corporate social responsibility and private-sector solutions to climate change. Having worked for Unilever for three years, she knew that she can do more for the environment and changing old habits to sustainability. Her journey as an entrepreneur began when she had the chance to work in Southeast Asia. Even since then, she has been in the field, expanding and inspiring people to become more sustainable. Finch, Sustainability Decoder Finch was created from Lizzie's initiative to inspire people to help protect the environment. The company analyses products' environmental impact and rates products based on their environmental footprints. This helps consumers make better decisions in buying and helps companies pick eco-friendly materials for manufacturing. The pandemic gave many people more time to come up with ideas of sustainability and help protect the environment. This has built a stronger foundation for Finch in the market, as people began to notice how humans create an impact on the environment. The lockdowns somehow helped the ecosystem to take a breather from poisonous fumes, smog, carbon emissions, etc. The long-term objective of Finch is to encourage businesses to shift to a mindset that prioritises sustainability. It's better to look at the long-term results than focus on what you can only gain quarterly. From a financial standpoint, companies that choose to be more sustainable increase their chances for more profit as many consumers are now turning to sustainable products. This encourages companies and manufacturers to lean on sustainability and more importantly help solve the ongoing issues in climate change. Lizzie's Superpower ‘Relentless Optimism' is Lizzie's superpower. Her optimism led her to build Finch. She feels optimistic about having a better environment as she advocates optimism in changing people's mindsets to focus more on sustainability. For her, the best way to solve climate change is to have a comprehensive collaboration between private and government sectors. Lizzie Horvitz is the CEO of Finch, a platform that rates products based on sustainability. The Finch platform takes in data from over 200,000 sources to provide accurate ratings for products and uses machine learning to ingest a bunch of attributes and then for each product will give a score based from one to 10. The Finch extension works on your browser and provides recommendations for products on Amazon. It allows you to make better purchasing decisions and also gets to know you as an individual so it can start recommending products you might like. With the increasing demand for sustainable and ethical consumer goods, Finch is positioning itself to be the go-to source for information on sustainable products. The company plans to achieve this by incorporating all the relevant certifications and aspects of sustainability into a one-stop-shop, both consumer-facing and b2b. This will allow consumers and retailers alike to easily find and compare sustainable products. In this episode, we discuss how the EU has stronger sustainability laws than the US and how this affects consumers. We also talk about how individual companies in the US are beginning to take steps in the right direction when it comes to sustainability. Finally, we introduce the Finch platform and how it can help you make better purchasing decisions. Tune in to learn more!

Lizzie Horvitz explores the subtleties and nuances of sustainability as she introduces us to Finch, a browser extension that rates products on their environmental and social impact as you shop online. Lizzie started Finch in order to empower customers to make informed, conscious choices as they consider the impact of what they buy. She is hopeful about the ways data and technology can address greenwashing and begin to shift our paradigm of unconscious over consumption. Influenced by the data she works with at Finch, Lizzie takes a pragmatic approach to sustainability, recognizing that there are no perfect solutions or simple answers when it comes to mitigating climate change, improving welfare for manufacturing workers, or shifting the standards to which we hold our products. Welcome to Episode 220 of Building My Legacy. In this podcast we talk with Lizzie Horvitz, the founder and CEO of Finch, which helps consumers understand how to find products that are best in function and best for a healthy, just planet. Lizzie's goal is to minimize our footprint at large in the world. She is doing that by working with companies to make sure their products aren't harming our planet and the people on it. Every product has an environmental impact, but how can we choose the one with the smallest impact? Lizzie Horvitz introduces us to FINCH.
Lizzie Horvitz has been passionate about sustainability since the age of 16 when she lived off the grid. It was there that, depending only on wind energy and rainwater, she saw the solution of climate change before fully understanding the problem. She is now the Founder and CEO of Finch. Finch is a tool that educates people on the ins and outs of sustainability by turning complex scientific facts into simple, actionable insights. Right now they're churning out content, have an MVP version of their ecomm browser plugin live, and have fantastic expertise to talk all things sustainability, conscious consumerism, and to dispel lots of the myths around the nonsense marketing terms like "green, organic" etc that drive consumer behaviour but has little impact. Before Finch, Lizzie worked in supply chain and sustainability at Unilever and then became Chief Operating Officer at Muuse, a startup that aims to mitigate single-use plastics in the to-go industry. She has an MBA and Master of Environmental Management from Yale University and is on the Global Leadership Council at the Natural Resources Defense Council and was named Greenbiz's 30 Under 30 in 2017. A few nuggets I picked up from Lizzie and they resonated deeply: 1. Listen to your audience 2. Serve with passion 3. When Lizzie was 16, she spent 3 months living off the grid completely reliant on wind energy and rainwater. That opportunity instilled in her a passion for addressing climate change with real-world solutions that has turned into a nearly two-decade career devoted to climate action. Before launching Finch, Lizzie served as Chief Operating Officer at Muuse, fighting to stop single-use waste. Before that, she worked in supply chain and sustainability at Unilever, where she was responsible for integrating the company's Sustainable Living Plan in North America. Lizzie started Finch to help decode sustainability and make ‘doing better' a more accessible choice for consumers. What if we had a bank of consumer good sustainability ratings so that we could compare products environmental impacts without having to rely on shady marketing or generic symbols? And what if that bank of ratings was crowd-sourced in the same manner that individual people built Wikipedia, Reddit, and Waze and then combine those efforts with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and good old fashion expertise. Well, what you would get is Finch. On the show today is Lizze Horvitz, CEO and Founder of Finch. Finch aims to decode sustainability and empower consumers to make better purchasing decisions. Lizzie started Finch in March of 2020 to educate people on the ins and outs of sustainability by turning complex scientific facts into simple, actionable insights. Launching as a browser extension, Finch fuses expert scores on products' environmental and social impacts with functional reviews from real people. During the interview we discuss Lizzie's lifelong commitment to sustainability, how that helped her as a founder, the myth that purchasing sustainably means spending more money, and bar shampoo. (Yes, you read that right, bar shampoo.) You can connect with Lizzie via email at hey@choosefinch.com or follow her on LinkedIn. Season two is powered by Climate People. If you are a software developer or recruiter looking to get into climate tech, Climate People is the best place to start. You may have seen the letters ESG in the news recently, we certainly have. Literally, that translates to "Environmental, Social and Governance", but it actually means in practice, that's a whole separate matter. This week we dig into the meaning behind the acronym with ESG expert and good friend Harry Etra, founder and CEO of HXE partners. Also, special guest and longtime friend of the Pod, Lizzie Horvitz, joins us! The conflict between doing good and making money will always be a balancing act in one way or another. If you're a company and not profitable, you're not long for the world (or market). However, these days, companies are finding that if they don't consider more than fattening up that dividend they could engender real backlash from consumers. We dig into how the scales are tipping, what's driving the shift in focus, and what the heck is up with this "greenwashing" we're hearing about.
The dark side of coffee isn't the roast. It's the trash. Enter Muuse, the reusable coffee cup company that's using technology to create a system of sustainable caffeination. Every year in the United States over 58 Billion single use coffee cups are thrown into landfills- that's the entire footprint of of New York's central park covered in coffee cups, stacked 100 feet high. To tackle the single use catastrophe Muuse has crafted an elegant reusable thermos and partnered with local coffee shops to afford the user the sophistication of a superior coffee cup with the convenience of not needing to worry about washing it in between uses. The aficionado brings their cup back to the store and swaps it out for a fresh one each time, getting a little discount in the process. In this episode we dig into the problem at hand, their intricate business model that leverages network effects to grow on a viral loop, and dig into how their COO Lizzie Horvitz got into the coffee game in the first place. Bottoms up!
