Journalist Claire Hoffman unpacks Sister, Sinner, the gripping true crime story of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson's disappearance and miraculous return. If you've never heard the name, Aimee Semple McPherson, you're not alone—but Claire Hoffman's Sister Sinner will ensure you never forget her name again as America's first mega-preacher.Today, we discuss this riveting biography, which opens with the astonishing true story of Aimee, who shaped modern evangelicalism, vanished into the ocean for 35 days, and returned with a kidnapping tale so wild it led to two sensational trials. The author was the first researcher granted access to the complete court records of Aimee's grand jury trial—records that, for more than a century, the Foursquare Church has refused to share with the outside world.Uncover her journalistic approach, which is both deeply researched and refreshingly secular. Embracing Aimee's contradictions—faith healer and showman, sinner and saint, feminist and fundamentalist creates a page-turning experience. Whether religious or not, you'll love this conversation on how charisma, celebrity, and faith collide. In this intimate and insightful conversation, Claire and I discuss:Her background and five-year research process to bring Aimee's story to lifeWhy Aimee's disappearance is the opening chapter, and what type of reader did she hope the true crime angle might pull inHow Claire's background as a journalist for Rolling Stone has given her a unique lens into the world of what it means to be a celebrityThe effort and reverence required when accessing court documents like this for a project

As Clare was writing, she realized that this would be the start of a three-book series featuring Detective Constable Ffion Morgan. Lynda Cohen Loigman joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her new historical novel, THE MATCHMAKER'S GIFT. Lynda was writing something else when Lynda's daughter brought her roommate home when their college classes shut down during the pandemic. The three of them ended up watching “Indian Matchmaking” on Netflix, and the roommate piped up and said that her grandmother had been a matchmaker. This sparked an idea for Lynda. Suddenly she found herself casting the book that she was writing aside to tell the story of a Jewish matchmaker who had been born in 1910, along with that of the matchmaker's granddaughter, a divorce lawyer in 1994. THE MATCHMAKER'S GIFT is laced with lots of historical details about matchmaking and Rabbinical courts, and is peppered with Yiddish expressions. Lynda talks about how she nails her storytelling --- and shares wonderful details about how she approached her research. This conversation was a long time coming as Lynda is someone I have "known" for a while but never have had the chance to sit down and chat. She is just so amazing on so many levels. This chat we came together to celebrate her latest novel, The Matchmaker's Gift, which is one of my top picks for 2022. It is an homage to grandmother's and love and finding your true passion. Lynda was meant to write this book. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed chatting with Lynda! Follow Lynda for her latest novels and news: https://lyndacohenloigman.com

April 8, 2019 - Our time machine welcomes aboard book lovers live at the Meet the Author Series presented by Mayda Bosco at the Closter Public Library in New Jersey. Together, we travel back to the Brooklyn and Massachusetts of the pre- and post-World War 2 era, for a tale of sibling strife that's as old as Cain and Abel. This is the engaging, absorbing story of two very different sisters, Ruth and Millie Kaplan. Raised in Brooklyn, each carries a hope chest full of hurt and secrets from their childhood. Although they try their best to escape it, they're forced together again as adults at the Springfield Armory, where the Arsenal of Democracy gears up to support the war effort. Many years have passed, but marriages, husbands, and even kids of their own can't stop them from sliding right back into the sandbox of roles forged in childhood. Weaving this tale of hurt feelings, estrangement, and siblings who are just running wildly different emotional operating systems, is Lynda Cohen Loigman, author of The Wartime Sisters: A Novel. It's the sophomore offering after her critically acclaimed debut The Two-Family House, a 2016 nominee for the Goodreads Choice Awards in Historical Fiction.
