In this insightful episode, we dive into three fascinating topics that blend faith, history, and current events. First, we explore the unveiling of the world's oldest Jewish book at the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C., discussing the incredible significance of this discovery. What makes this artifact so astonishing, and why are institutions like the Ark in Cincinnati and the Museum of the Bible crucial for preserving religious history?https://www.jta.org/2024/09/24/united-states/museum-of-the-bible-unveils-worlds-oldest-jewish-book-in-new-exhibitNext, we shift gears to a creative ministry that combines Bible stories with pro wrestling. Salvation Pro Wrestling is an unconventional way to bring the Gospel to life. We discuss the impact of this unique ministry and offer thoughts on how other church members can start their own initiatives to share the message of Christ in their communities.https://www.sungazette.com/news/top-news/2024/09/bible-stories-come-to-life-in-salvation-pro-wrestling-ring/Lastly, we tackle a more serious topic involving Dr. Steven Lawson, whose name has been recently removed from The Master's Seminary and Grace Community Church websites. We reflect on what this development might mean, and in a broader discussion, address the increasing reports of immoral behavior among pastors. What's the solution—stronger church support, or a deeper pastoral commitment?https://www.crosswalk.com/headlines/contributors/milton-quintanilla/dr-steven-lawson-wiped-from-the-masters-seminary-and-grace-community-church-websites.htmlJoin us as we reflect on these diverse and thought-provoking stories that touch on the intersection of faith, history, and community.

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, Prosperity within your palaces." For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, "Peace be within you." Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek your good. Welcome back to Pastor's Chat! Thank you so much for your patience these past two weeks while we were away on tour to the Holy Land with a wonderful group of 16 people. There was at least one person from each of the four churches I've been privileged to minister to as a pastor. We had a glorious experience as we went to the places where our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ lived and minister to the people during His thirty-three and half years on earth. At the end of my video chat today I've included a collage of pictures that highlight the last three days of our time in Jerusalem. Please watch it to the very end. Psalm 122 was written by King David as one of his three “Pilgrim Psalms.” No doubt this Psalm was written after he had captured the city of Jerusalem from the Jebusites, built the City of David, and set up the Tent of Tabernacle on Mt. Moriah for the Ark of the Covenant. David hears the people as they voice their desire to go and worship in the house of the LORD and he is eager to join them. In this Psalm we first see people with a “Heart for God” (vv. 1-2). The people that joined me on this trip had this same heart in seeking to worship the Lord. And now can say “Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem”. We also notice that the people in David's time had a “Heart for Praise” (vv.3-5). The Lord had told His people that one day there would be a central place where they would worship (Ex. 23:14-19; Deut. 12:5-7, 11-14, 17-19; 14:23; 16:2, 16), and that place was Jerusalem. The Lord instructed David that the place on Mount Moriah where he had built the altar was to be the site for the temple (1 Chron. 21-22), and He also gave David the plans for the structure (1 Chron. 28). His choice was a wise one, for not only was Mount Zion an almost impregnable citadel, but it was located on the border of Judah and Benjamin and helped to bind the northern and southern tribes together. King Saul was from Benjamin, and David was from Judah. When the psalmist looked at the city, he thought of unity and security. Just as the stones of the walls and houses were "bound firmly together," so the people were bound together in their worship of the Lord and their respect for the throne. The church today already has spiritual unity (Eph. 4:1-6), but we must endeavor to maintain it and demonstrate it before a watching world (John 17:20-23). As for security, Jesus promised that the very forces of hell could not stand before the onward march of His church (Matt. 16:18). But it was the praise of Jehovah that was central (v. 4). God had commanded that His people go to Jerusalem for the feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles (Ex. 23:14-19; John 4:20-21), and the people went as worshipers and not sightseers. Yes, there was much to see in Jerusalem, but giving thanks to the Lord was their most important task and their greatest privilege. The third thing that David and the people had was a “Heart for Prayer and Peace” (vv. 6-9) that would produce “prosperity”. This prosperity mentioned in verse 6 does not refer to material wealth but primarily to the spiritual enrichment that comes to those who love God, His Son (born a Jew), His Word (a Jewish Book), and His chosen people! Our awesome team truly experienced that these past two weeks and we will never be the same! Maybe one day you can join us on a trip to the Holy Land!

Robin Thinks! Deconstructing Books That Wrecked Us

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2022 46:03

In The Circle Maker, Mark Batterson reaches deep into an ancient Jewish Book of Legends to extract the story of Honi, an eccentric sage who lived outside the walls of Jerusalem just prior to the birth of Jesus. Batterson introduces Honi after his homeland has experienced a year-long drought. He weaves a rich tapestry of hyperbole in which Honi boldy draws a circle, steps inside and begins to pray. First, his prayers result in a tiny sprinkle of rain, then a torrent and finally a gentle shower. If this were an American Epic, Honi would return home a hero - and so he does in Batterson's tale. Although Batterson casually mentions that Honi's return does not quite result in Disney-esque perfection, he seems disinclined to expand on that part of the story the same way he did with Honi's great miracle. And therein lies the rub. The Circle Maker is one more of what I like to call “Christian rah-rah” books, which are to me quite similar to fad diet books. Yes, they may produce some relatively spectacular results at first, but those results usually come at a far higher cost than we realize. Not only are they unsustainable, but if you do sustain them, they can cause incredible damage in the long run. Like so many “prosperity gospel” books, The Circle Maker chooses to focus on the miracle - or how to achieve success - without ever exploring the costs of success. Which are often quite high. In today's podcast I talk about how God is not fooled. There are many things man does that he likes to claim are for the glory of God that really aren't. The problem is, you can achieve success regardless of your motivation but achieving success for yourself will always come at a much higher cost than what we genuinely do for God. God is not deceived and God is not mocked. God always knows exactly why we are really doing what we are doing and who it is really for. Follow Kevin James Thornton here! In this episode, we are very excited to have author Daniel Braum. Daniel's fiction has been classified as fantasy, science fiction, and horror but he prefers the good old-fashioned term of fiction, which when he was growing up simply meant a story where anything could happen. His stories frequently defy category and reside in the fuzzy areas between genres, utilizing and combining genre elements to produce tales that are wholly unique.Daniel's short works have appeared in numerous anthologies and publications. He has also published collections of his short stories and two novels. We discussed the challenge, rewards, and development of a cross-genre story. Daniel tells us that others actually categorized some of his work as horror and he learned about the genre from Cemetery Dance Magazine and Ellen Datlow's The Best Horror of the Year Anthologies. Daniel shares his creative process and how setting deeply influences his story development. We talk about the way he effectively communicates universal themes in his writing in such a subtle and impactful way.We chat about Daniel's story Hand of Fire which appears in The Jewish Book of Horror edited by Josh Schlossberg and the importance of having spaces for stories of this vein. Brenda compared it to UBO by Steve Rasnic Tem.Daniel hosts the New York Ghost Story Festival that aims to bring back ghost stories to Christmas time. He tells us how it came about and why.  We discuss the impressive array of paranormal and cryptid subjects that appear in Daniel's writing.Daniel reads from his short story, How to Stay Afloat Without Drowning, which can be found in his collection Underworld Dreams or The Best Horror of the Year, Volume 12.Find more about Daniel here: https://bloodandstardust.wordpress.com/and on his Amazon Author Page.Brenda is here: https://brendatolian.com/Joy is here: https://www.joyyehle.com/**When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission that will be used to continue to bring our audience great horror content. *Disclaimer: Reference to any specific product or entity does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation by the Podcasters. We speak about what it was like for Shulie growing up with a father who was a Rabbi and how it felt being "the Jewish girl" in our High School. We deconstruct Judaism as both a religion and a culture and discuss the nature of ancestral Jewish trauma. We speak about how we can incorporate traditional practices of all kinds into our lives, but also evolve them to suit our modern day values. And Shulie also explains how Judaism encourages us to question & struggle with faith, how the Jewish calendar can help connect us to nature, and how being angry and processing grief has always been a crucial component Judaism throughout history and into the present.  Send Shulie an Email - cantor@bethsholomfrederick.org Shulie's book recommendations: The Jewish Book of Days by Jill Hammer Songs featured: "Opening" by Jamie Sieber and "Avinu Malkeinu" by Barbara Streisand Interested in participating in my first Lunar Cycle Intensive?
