Laat het me weten. Wil je ‘een soort van recensie de podcast' volgen? Dat kan op spotify en andere podcast programmaatjes maar ook op YouTube! Of houd m'n website in de gaten. www.desebastiaan.nl

This is a book called Nevermoor. There is a second book called Wundersmith. The third book is titled Hollopox.
Today we sit down and give some recommendations for books that have a found family theme. We know that holidays can be difficult for many people in the queer community and with COVID. The LGBTQ+ community is incredible at creating found families to provide support and love and safe spaces. Sam's recommendations include - Cemetery Boys, Once & Future, Six of Crows, and If You Want To Make God Laugh. Alex's recommendations include - Cantoras, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, When We Were Magic, and Nevermoor. You can find us on Instagram and Twitter at @thebookstagays and on our individual instagrams at @thebookadvocate and @staxsonstaxs
Jessica Towsend is sometimes referred to as the “JK Rowling of Australia”...but it's no longer a name she relishes...more on that later. The first three books of her young adult Nevermoor series was sold for a six-figure sum, and the rights have been sold to 20th Century Fox. The series follows Morrigan Crow, who was born cursed - doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. She's forced to take part in near-impossible trials in order to join the Wundrous Society and escape her fate. The third book in the series, Hollowpox, has just been released, and she's been talking to Jack Tame about the release. LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE

I, Kaytee, realize that the comments I made about JK Rowling were very personal. I would probably phrase them differently now, having seen how they were received. I still feel very strongly about her stance and her very public opinions, but I would like to say that her opinions are garbage, not she as a person. I humbly accept this correction from our many listeners who have pointed it out as going too far. Meredith is recording with a special guest this week and has a big announcement, so be sure you tune in right at the top! You’ll hear again from our friend Mindy Brouse, best friend of the show and reader extraordinaire. You'll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host. These bookish moments have a common thread in that they involve real life pressing books into the hands of friends and the reactions of those friends. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got books spanning genres and time periods and continents. We’ve got ones that will spark discussion, we’ve got books that’ll leave your heart aflutter. It’s a great week of book talk! Our Slow But Steady check in is going to move to every once in a while instead of every week. You can still check in on Instagram on the regular, but we’re not going to keep banging the “I’ve got very little to report” drum. Thanks to the listener survey and all your great feedback! For our deep dive this week, Meredith and Mindy are chatting about raising readers of all ages. There are some really fantastic tips and some great encouragement in this episode, friends. Even if you don’t have kids (or don’t like kids), I’m guessing you know a reader in your life who would love to hear this chunk, so pass it along! Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got one that has been mentioned many times on the podcast but never “pressed” and one that should be in your box of Christmas books that you haul out every December. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Hosts, Ryan, Molly, and Ryan, give a glimpse of what WunderCast is all about! We dive into the Prologue of Nevermoor The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.
Fun fact: Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow was the single most requested title for New Reads November 2019, and on Episode 72, Alli talks all about it with middle school ELA teacher Alex Fahey. They chat Harry Potter comparisons, world building, strong female protagonists, character development, isolation, immigration, and the appeal of power versus the appeal of community. Spoilers are minimal, so tune in for an intro to this book even if you haven't read it yet! Follow Alex on Twitter (@TeacherAFahey) and Instagram (@ourlives_afahey).
Kaytee and Meredith are sharing a special guest with you this week, our dear friend and podcast pal, Sarah Dickinson of Sarah’s Bookshelves and Sarah’s Bookshelves Live. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a sanity saver behind the scenes, meeting a (kid’s) favorite author, and new reading acronyms. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’re each sharing two reads this week and we’re all over the place with sequels and weird books, and amazing books, and STRONG opinions! We’re skipping slow but steady so we have more time to chat with Sarah. Stay tuned for an update on that next week. For our deep dive this week, we are picking Sarah’s brain about what it’s like to almost always be reading ahead of the charts. How she tracks her reading and whether she has goals for her yearly reading. It’s a great conversation with lots of food for thought. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands. We’ve got a non-fiction pick that will tear your heart out, an oldie but a goodie, and a WWII fiction book one of us believes is “best in class.” As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds and speakers. And we’re feeling a little feisty this week (we know.. that’s your favorite)! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: an explanation for the extreme busy-ness around here, and a Patron-related milestone! Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Two titles from each host, middle grade, YA, contemporary romance, and classic #bookstagrammademedoit. We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening for our own SBS reads in the past week, as well as a few emails from listeners to share. For our deep dive this week, we are discussing our favorite self-help and productivity books. Two Penelopes talking about productivity? Don’t worry, the show notes have ALL the titles! Finally, this week, we are Bellying Up to the Book Bar. Jasmine Lake wants sweet and fun books, she doesn’t mind heavier topics, but as an HSP, they need to be dealt with gently. And we’ve got a bunch of goodies to share with her! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. In this novel, a cursed child destined to die on her eleventh birthday is rescued and whisked away to a secret realm called Nevermoor and given the chance to compete for a place in a prestigious organization called the Wundrous Society.

Kaytee and Meredith are back in your earbuds this week to bring you Episode 38, including a few literary confessions or demerits. We have a few important announcements right at the top of the show, one of which requires your help, listeners! Send us your Ask Us Anything questions via email, Direct Message, or as a comment on show notes, and we’ll feature them in a future episode! If we use your question, we’ll send you a coveted Currently Reading bookmark (and our everlasting thanks, of course). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: an indie bookstore day recap and a bookish “retirement” gift. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We both read quite a few books that we REALLY loved this week, so don’t hesitate to use those show notes below! For our deep dive this week, we have decided to give ourselves bookish “demerits” a la Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcast. These are places in our reading lives where we think we could improve. Sometimes we commiserate with each other and sometimes we chide each other! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week we are talking about a fantastic mystery/police procedural, and a multi-generational family saga. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Meredith and Kaytee have to try to keep themselves under control this week as we have a bit of a longer deep dive segment. It’s hard, listeners, to reign in the book talk, especially after a week away! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of the hosts: ditching a time-suck that was preventing reading, and a new bookish website. Next, we discuss our current reads. Since we had to limit ourselves, these four titles are all AMAZING. We dare you to not get excited about at least half of them, no matter what your wheelhouse is! Our deep dive this week includes and extra special interview with the ladies from Pantsuit Politics, Beth and Sarah. Whether you’re already a fan, or these are new voices in your ears, you’re guaranteed to learn something. I (Kaytee) did, and have been a raving fangirl for more than two years. It’s unbelievable to me that I even got to talk to them! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: a non-fiction pick from Sarah if you want to broaden your political reading, a poetic choice from Beth for sanity in turbulent times, and one from each of your regular hosts (a sweet picture book and a creepy true crime novel). That’s a lot of pressed books! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Kaytee and Meredith are deep in the holiday season and we’re ready to talk about all the books! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a bookish moment of connection with a new friend and a book ornament for the tree. Next, we tackle what we are currently reading, with plenty of kid lit in this week’s selections as well as some cozy reads and some creepy ones. This week’s deep dive is about winter reads and the titles we like to cozy up with during the holidays. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: a new (old) mystery series to sink your teeth into, and a travel memoir. This week we’re talking brand new titles, some oldies but goodies and a few bookish surprises. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a brand new release finally in hand, and a bookish Christmas tradition. Next, we tackle what we are currently reading, a few brand new releases as well as a bunch of goodness from the back list. This week we spend some time discussing how our reading habits change during the holidays, both in amount and substance. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: a rich-family inheritance drama, and a time-travel-esque (no actual time travel involved) book that surprised me. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a surprise book present, an accessory to make binge-reading the next big thing, and choosing books for a trip. Next, we tackle what we are currently reading, just two titles from each of the three of us because that still gives you a whole stack to check out. Our deep-dive this week delves deep into the ins and outs of running a book club. And this episode is for you whether you have a group of friends that meet at a coffee shop each month or you are looking for a group of bookish friends on the internet so you can “book club” in your PJs! We even toss around some ideas for those of us (like Meredith and Kaytee) who are “book-club challenged” in that our inner rebel shows up whenever someone says we have to read a certain title. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week we have some classic dude-friendly literature, a lovely little fun romp, and a sweeping American and African family story. Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. In the News: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes' Deleted Scene Reveals What Happened to Jason Clarke's Malcolm ‘Nevermoor' Movie Coming From Drew Goddard ‘Thor: Ragnarok' Tracking for $100 Million-Plus Opening Weekend ‘Dora the Explorer' Movie Coming From Michael Bay and Nick Stoller ‘Logan' Spin-Off Starring X-23 In the Works From Director James Mangold In The Mailbag: Mike F from Victoria, BC, Canada writes in that he just rewatched Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler and “it can't be overstated how effective that movie is on every level. I was thinking about roles that were not only perfectly cast but ones that you could almost not picture any other actor being able to pull off. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool came to mind. So did Jeff Bridges' portrayal of Otis “Bad” Blake from Crazy Heart. At the top of my list, tho, has to be Mickey Rourke as Randy “The Ram” Robinson in The Wrestler. Not only was his physical acting and physique perfectly fitting for the character, but, the acting work he does outside of the ring is so convincing, you almost forget it isn't a real person you're watching, which makes for an entirely immersive movie viewing experience. I'm curious if you guys have any film roles that you couldn't picture anyone else doing.” Peter's Picks: Daniel Day Lewis as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, Harrison Ford in Star Wars, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight HT's Picks: Ben Affleck in Gone Girl, Charlize Theron as Furiousa in Mad Max: Fury Road, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa Chris' Picks: Mads Mikkelsen, Hannibal; Daniel Day Lewis, gangs of New york; Cate Blanchett, Carol To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
