Marilyn Johnson is Senior Director Sustainability at Clarivate and was recently named by The American Energy Society as one of the top 500 Global Sustainability Thought Leaders.Marilyn and her work are great examples of how DEI is increasingly influencing thought and action in other functions across the organization. While the impact of DEI is perhaps most obvious in HR related areas such as Talent Management or Employee Wellbeing, Marilyn explains how it has become a core principle guiding sustainability at Clarivate.Sustainability and Diversity both share a common characteristic - to be effective they can't be a function bolted on to the organization, they have to inform all activities in the organization. They are thus natural partners in organizational transformation and culture. This is a thought provoking, stimulating conversation that invites listeners to think more expansively about DEI to drive lasting change.

This week, my guest is Bill Covaleski. He's the brewmaster and co-founder of Victory Brewing Company. This year, Bill and co-founder Ron Barchet are celebrating 25 years of Victory. As someone who has successfully built and run a business for 25 years, Bill drops a lot of knowledge, and I think it's beneficial whether you are running your own business, or have employees that report to you.Bill talks about how he got into brewing, and the decision to start a brewery with his best friend Ron Barchet. We talk about trends in the industry, discussing everything from beer styles, to seltzers and non-alcoholic beer. In 2016 Victory became part of Artisanal Brewing Ventures, which also includes Southern Tier Brewing and Sixpoint Brewery. I asked Bill about that decision, and if he worried about being considered a sellout for becoming part of “big beer”. Also, this week I'm doing something different. I wanted to work on some exclusive recipes using Victory beer. For this, I partnered with blogger Marilyn Johnson from the blog Philly Grub. The first recipe is scrapple tacos with an apple/fennel/celery slaw, and served with an aji panca salsa using Victory's Prima Pils. The second recipe is Oktoberfest Beer Truffles, using Utz pretzels and Victory's Festbier. Head over to PhillyGrub.blog to find these exclusive recipes. Looking to hire employees for your restaurant? Without major marketing fanfare, Ford Australia, in conjunction with the Amy Gillet Foundation, is provided free driver training in techniques that are not the normal part of getting your L plates. Designed for new and young drivers, DSFL offers hands-on training delivered by professional instructors to help participants become safer drivers. The course focuses on techniques not taught during L-plate driver instruction and aims to increase the use of safe and calm driving techniques as well as teach new drivers how to share the road with other vehicles and cyclists. Liz Ampt a behavioural scientist and transport data expert went along to the launch. Some of the things she noted included: With the advent of airbags, the best way to hold the steering wheel is with your hands in the 9:15 position rather than the traditional “ten-to-two”. Young people are given the chance to experience heavy braking situations. One approach to help drivers avoid dooring cyclists is called the Dutch reach, in which a driver uses their far hand (left hand for right-hand drive vehicles) to open the car door which forces drivers to turn their heads and look behind then hopefully to check for cyclists. We have all heard lectures about the dangers of drunk driving but the reality is that when we have been drinking, we do not appreciate how much our reactions and skills have diminished. At the Ford day people can test their skills in a sobriety test then put on an impairment suit. This has been specially designed with weights attached to your arms, thighs, legs and ankles and you also where earmuffs and goggles that distort your vision. You then have to repeat the sobriety test. The results often bring hilarity to the on-lookers. The program is backed up with work from the respected researcher Dr Marilyn Johnson. One of the exercises Dr Johnson did was to get truck drivers to ride the bicycle on a certain course in the city. Initially the experience drivers would sit back and say “What do we have to do this exercise for?”. But after they have done it, they could soon point out other truck driver errors when dealing with bikes. Their research also showed that almost one third (32 per cent) of people surveyed said they are not aware of common techniques such as the “one metre rule”, where drivers are advised to leave one metre distance between their vehicle and cyclists (driving 60 km/h or less), and only half (53 percent) observe it. The research also found that 68 percent of cyclists are concerned every time a vehicle passes them while on the road. The Driving Skills for Life is a free course funded by Ford and carried out at six locations around Australia.

Well Paul Green has returned home to teach performance-based music again in the city where he founded the original School of Rock en route to revolutionizing music education across the nation. But this time, the Godfather of Rock School Education is starting small - and keeping it that way – to create The Greatest Music School in the Country. Unlike the School of Rock model, Green's new school is an audition-only “Master's Program in Rock Music” for kids “with big dreams and the chops to back them up.” In other words, serious musicians who need to already have “the gift of rock” before they even meet the man who gave it to an entire generation. The Paul Green Rock Academy is located 6183 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19128. Serious musicians, aged 10-18, who are interested in auditioning should write to info@paulgreenrock.com. Independence, Kansas author Marilyn Johnson, writing under the pen name Sue Snow has published her first children's book "Little Magpie and the Wild Pony Hunt. She is currently working on "Little Magpie and Honey," book 2 of Little Magpie and Honey Adventures. This is the story of Little Magpie and her pony Honey. She discovers that her pony is highly intelligent, is a comedian and a jokester. She trains Honey first with verbal and then with hand commands much like we train dogs. Honey plays lots of tricks on the Magpie, Broken Tooth, the medicine man and the entire village during their sessions, all the while snickering in laughter at her clever tricks! Little Magpie then discovers that Honey is attuned to her Dream Walking so she trains her to hear nonverbal commands without hand signals. The book centers on the two of them working together in two separate events. The first one wins the freedom of a young mother whose toddler was drowning. The warrior Black Snake of the Yellow Bear Eaters rescue the young boy and, as a prize for the rescue, claim the mother for his wife. Little Magpie and Honey trick him by getting him to agree to a wager that the warrior thinks he is sure to win. The second event is a rescue by Little Magpie and Honey of a little girl, Yellow Flower, of the People of the Deer who is kidnapped by the Badger People. After the rescue, the two are pursued through the Painted Mountains by the Badgers, as they try to steal back the child, and by Black Snake who wants revenge on Little Magpie and Honey. As they continue on their dangerous journey, Little Magpie tells Yellow Flower many stories of their People and how Grandmother Moon and Grandfather Sun shaped the mountains and the tall hoodoos they are traveling through. Her book Little Magpie and The Wild Pony Hunt can be purchased at Magnolia Scents by Design, 106 N Pennsylvania Ave, Independence, KS 67301 or by calling (620) 331-8900.
