The beautiful Marshall Lyles is again joining Lisa Dion for another Lessons from the Playroom episode, but this time to talk about understanding Ableism and Disablism in the Playroom. Marshall Lyles, LMFT-S, LPC-S, RPT-S, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, has 20 years of practice in family play therapy. Drawing on lessons learned from working with attachment trauma in a variety of settings, Marshall regularly teaches on sandtray therapy and family work around the globe. In our opinion, Marshall is one of the leading voices in helping us understand ableism and disablism. You can connect with him at www.marshalllyles.com. In this episode, Marshall and Lisa tackle this commonly occurring, yet secretly held subject of ableism and disablism in our field. Here's what you'll hear: How ableism and institutionalized ableism has entered our profession, and how we might be perpetuating ableist norms for our clients or even for each other as therapists; How to step into the mind of another in order to really have the sufficient mentalization to think critically about our own play spaces and our play therapy practices; How to initiate repair when rupture happens due to unawareness or assuming all minds and bodies work in the same way; and How to more fully celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and help individuals love and appreciate themselves exactly as they are. You're invited to listen to this episode and take Marshalls' wisdom to heart to discover ways to more fully welcome your clients' mind and body into the therapeutic space. As well, to stay true to you as a clinician and do what you need to care for your heart, your mind, and your body. Welcome everyone to episode 21.I am so happy to be revisiting the topic of EMDR in today's episode. I last spoke about EMDR in episode number 14 and it is by far the most popular. So my goal for today is to help listeners, both practitioner and layperson, learn more about the evidence-based EMDR therapy as well as discover how an integrated EMDR/SSP approach may offer an optimal pathway to wellness. In today's episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with 3 amazing clinicians, Jill Hosey, Eliza Fernandes, and Laurie Belanger, all EMDRIA Approved Consultants. In this episode, Lisa is joined by another special therapist - a gem
Marshall Lyles is one of my favorite humans on the planet. How did I get so lucky as to call him one of my closest friends, as well as a dear colleague who enjoys the creation process with me.Marshall is a dad, a therapist, a creator. We met and connected over our love for supporting the familie of kids impacted by trauma, but our relationship has grown into so much more.Marshall is one of those humans who can combine deep thinking with deep humor. He isn't afraid of asking the hard questions but he intuitively knows how to infuse delight into just the right moments. In this episode, Marshall and I discuss the importance of our ability to be reflective as parents and as people- meaning, our ability to think about ourselves and how we are impacting our children and how they show up in the world. There is a certain amount of awe in realizing that our chidren come to know themselves largely because of who we show them they are. And our capacity to do that in the truest most authentic way is largely dependent upon our ability to be reflective with ourselves and how allllllll the previous generations have impacted us and how we see ourselves. It sounds heavy I know but Marshall's gift is taking the heavy and bringing in ease. And humor. You'll love this episode, promise. When you're done, go find Marshall!!! www.MarshallLyles.com as well as the amazing, one-of-a-kind workshop in Austin, TX at The Therapists Workshop.********************Be sure to register for my F R E E masterclass on What Behaviors Really Are...and How to Fix Them (this is the same masterclass, just renamed, as the Regulation, Connection, Felt-Safety Masterclass). You can register to attend live (on May 10 or 11) here: https://robyngobbel.com/whatbehaviorsareIf you are seeing this after May 11, you can watch the replay of that masterclass here: https://robyngobbel.com/masterclass**********There are so many benefits (and no drawbacks!) to teaching kids and teens about the brain. In this episode, Marshall Lyles shares his passion for helping his clients heal from trauma through Expressive Arts. When I reached out to Marshall to invite him on the podcast, I requested a conversation focusing on his use of poetry with his clients. In this episode, you’ll notice that we cover much more than poetry. Marshall is highly trained and well versed in so many healing traumas and approaches that it was difficult to limit our conversation. I’m excited for you to experience our conversation about how he used expressive arts to heal trauma. He is an EMDRIA approved consultant and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, among many other credentials that speak to his capacity to treat trauma. Be sure to visit www.marshalllyles.com www.therapistsworkshop.com to learn more about him and to see his beautiful expressive arts studio.

Marshall Lyles is a supervisor to LMFT's, LPC's, and RPT's and an EMDR international association approved consultant. We talk about how he got in to the field, the power of expressive arts therapy, and what he has learned about being human through his career as a therapist. Marshall was my first student internship supervisor. I have so much respect for him and I hope the felt safety one experiences with him translates in this podcast format. Here's a preview of the episode in the form of a couple quotes I pulled, "I think if we could raise a generation of people who trust in their own creativity, global problems would be solved. I think that fences would come down and connections would be built." "The act of sustained creativity is inherently integrating on the nervous system level. So the more integrated we are, the more regulated we are, the more relationally capable we are. Then we find as a result of that endeavor more of our inherent resilience."Thanks for listening. Subscribe and write a review so more people can have the chance to come across these amazing guests.

In this Voices From the Expressive Therapies Summit Episode, I interviewed play therapist Marshall Lyles. He talked about his multi-modal integrative approach to therapy and training therapists. Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, has over 15 years of practice in family and play therapy in a variety of mental health settings. With extensive international speaking and training experience in experiential approaches to treating attachment trauma, Marshall particularly enjoys discussing the use of sandtray therapy within a trauma-informed context. Presently, Marshall primarily conducts supervision and consultation sessions with counseling professionals. He is EMDR-certified and applies this, and other trauma approaches to implementation with diverse populations. He is nearing the completion of his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. In this episode, Marshall shares how he has taken an integrative approach to weaving the healing approaches he is most passionate about into all of his therapeutic endeavors. He speaks to the vulnerability of what it is to embark on the journey of becoming something more within your professional identity - the transition from therapist to leader and trainer of therapists. Additionally, he speaks about the importance of considering the needs of both the self and the clients as we make decisions to shift professionally. I definitely appreciated this perspective. Marshall has created a GORGEOUS space called The Workshop, in Austin, Texas. He will be hosting interactive trainings, supervision and open studio style events for expressive and playful therapists. The care and consideration that went into designing the space is brightly evident. The passion he has for his work shines through each of his thera-preneurial endeavors. reFRAMED Podcast Presented by the Gladney Center for Adoption
Guest Marshall Lyles joins reFRAMED Podcast Host, Emily Morehead, LPC, to talk about trauma. A lot of families ask a lot of questions about trauma and our goal is to break down this big topic into bite-size pieces. There's a phrase that our listeners probably hear a lot, "trauma-informed care", which does mean a lot but doesn't communicate a lot. Marshall defines trauma as any event that any person would go through that gets stored in the memory in a way that it then starts to interfere with their functioning. Trauma is more about how those memories are stored than it does about the actual events that happened. We are striving to make an impact in our world through creating conversations about topics that are important to you and yours. Check out our Show Notes for resources and contact information.
