AJ Tesler, an award-winning producer and director who, along with his wife Jenny, is launching Magnolia's Guide to Adventuring, a new documentary video series created with support from Acadia Pharmaceuticals, inspired by their daughter Magnolia's experience with the rare genetic neurodevelopmental disease Rett syndrome. We're also joined by Dr. Cary Fu, a pediatric neurologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who emphasizes the need for early diagnosis. The video series highlights the adventures children with Rett syndrome can engage in.  While Cary emphasizes the importance of safety and consulting with specialists before pursuing an adventure, AJ and Cary encourage people to recognize the capabilities of children with Rett and focus on what they can do.   AJ explains, "We made a documentary about that experience and those initial steps that we took called Magnolia's Hope, which is available on iTunes and Amazon streaming, as well as a bunch of other places. And in that documentary, my wife so sagely presents it as we want to make sure that when there's a cure, she'll have stories to tell. That's an inspiring way to think about all of this. Her story does not just have to be about Rett syndrome. It doesn't have to be about all the things that she can't do. It can be about all the things that you can do." "Beyond that, it was also about finding families to come along on these adventures with us. Some of the families are adventurous and have tried these things before. Some of them have never done any of these things before. That was part of the creative vision for the entire thing, which was to show that no matter what your disability is, no matter where on the spectrum you are, as long as a doctor says that it's okay to do these things, then, by all means, there are organizations that can help you do these things." Cary elaborates, "I wouldn't say it's necessarily unusual, but I do think that what AJ and Jenny have done with their family is very inspiring. I think families come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. I think the important thing is I encourage all of my families with Rett syndrome to make sure not to allow the diagnosis to define them. To make sure that whatever expectations they had as a family before the diagnosis was made and before they realized that there would be potential limitations and need to make modifications, they should feel free to pursue those things that they wanted, the hopes that they wanted for their child." #RettSyndrome #MagnoliasGuideToAdventuring" #AdventuringWithMagnolia #RettRevealed #AdaptiveSports #AdaptiveAdventures #RareDisease RettRevealed.com Download the transcript here

L. Abstract: Absence seizures are characterized by regular and generalized spike-and-wave electrical patterns in the brain, resulting in unresponsiveness to environmental stimuli. In patients suffering absence epilepsy, recurring seizures can significantly decrease their quality of life and lead to yet untreatable comorbidities. The mechanism underlying the reduced responsiveness to external stimulus remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate whole-brain responsiveness to visual and somatosensory whisker stimulation in GAERS, a well-established rat model for absence epilepsy. Animals were imaged continuously using a quiet zero-echo-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sequence while in a non-curarized awake state, allowing for naturally occurring seizures to be produced inside the 9.4T magnet. Sensory stimulations were applied in 28 fMRI sessions during interictal and ictal periods, as assessed by concurrent EEG recordings, and whole brain responsiveness and hemodynamic responses were compared between these two states. Additionally, a mean-field simulation model was used to mechanistically explain the changes of neural responsiveness to visual stimulation between interictal and ictal states. Results showed that whole-brain responses to both sensory stimulations were suppressed and spatially hindered during a seizure. In several cortical regions, hemodynamic responses were negatively polarized during seizures, despite the application of a stimulus. The simulation results agreed well with fMRI findings, showing restricted propagation of spontaneous activity due to stimulation. These results suggest that typical information flow in functional pathways responsible for processing sensory stimulation is hindered and suppressed during absence seizures, potentially contributing to decreased responsiveness. Ep 52: Understanding Attachment with Dr. Mara Tesler-Stein

Zero Disturbance

In our field, we hear and use the word attachment so often. And, in the community of trauma-informed clinicians, I'd always felt like we had a deep understanding of what this word means. But when I sat down with Dr. Mara Tesler-Stein for the second time on The Zero Disturbance Podcast, we got to unpack the lack of understanding that lies within this concept for our clients... and possibly even for the folks in our clinical communities. A lot of research in the perinatal field suggests that we jump to a "disturbed attachment" diagnosis with our NICU babies. However, Mara helps redirect us to what she sees as the real key to fostering secure attachment for parents and children. And the answer is not so reliant on the NICU experience that the research suggests. In fact, it's actually quite simple. If parents of NICU babies are able to respond with attunement, responsiveness, and sensitivity, then secure attachment will find its way. And yes, that means that parents need to put in their own work, spending time reflecting on their own attachment behaviors and styles, but when that work is navigated, they're able to give their babies the secure attachment they so lovingly want to offer. And that's the magic in the trauma-informed therapy we offer our adult clients. This interview was a powerful reminder of how the narratives we create about parents or kids are sometimes an interpretation (or misinterpretation) of behaviors and urges. As we explored attachment and parenting throughout the lifespan, even touching on complex diagnoses such as neurodivergence, the vulnerable child, and RAD, Mara brought me "back to home base" in the NICU. Join us as we learn how to trust and listen to parents, help them create healthy narratives, and teach them what secure attachment actually looks like! Every clinician, whether they think they work with reproductive issues or not, needs to hear this discussion! Why? First, even if your clinical work doesn't focus on these topics, you're still likely to find them showing up in your office. Next, how we think about incorporating EMDR therapy during the reproductive period, especially during a client's pregnancy, can be applied conceptually to every client! By exploring the hopes, fears, and hesitations that arise when incorporating EMDR during the reproductive period, we illuminate what comes up across clinical practice areas. There are a lot of alarming messages in the therapy world about EMDR and pregnancy. And for many EMDR clinicians, this messaging has instilled an aversion to doing EMDR with our pregnant clients. We're taught to fear the "dangers" of doing EMDR in the first and third trimesters, the threat EMDR has on high-risk pregnancies, and that we should, at all costs, avoid any reprocessing in Phase 4 with our pregnant clients. And while this messaging has a good intention, it loses sight of one of the biggest questions associated with EMDR and pregnancy: what's the risk if we don't do EMDR with our pregnant clients? I sat down with perinatal mental health advocate and expert Dr. Mara Tesler Stein to learn more about EMDR and pregnancy to unpack the past, present, and future behind this misunderstood question. Listen as we talk about the fears we have as clinicians, our responsibilities to our clients, and the research that actually answers the often asked question "Can you do EMDR with a pregnant client?" In Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America (Princeton University Press, 2018), co-authors John Sides, Michael Tesler, and Lynn Vavreck explore the underlying question of American identity as a key component within the political landscape that was used during the 2016 primary and general election. Identity Crisis delves into the way that the Republican primary battle was shaped by this question of identity, specifically the ways in which candidate Donald Trump was able to leverage embedded tensions around social identity, especially in regard to issues like immigration. Through the use of substantial data sets that dive into voters' choices over time, Sides, Tesler, and Vavreck are able to parse policy and issue preferences, how those choices coordinate with partisan inclinations and candidate selection, and what shifted during the course of the election cycle in 2015 and 2016. This incredibly compelling book, accessible to academics and non-academics, examines the tensions around American identity and what it means to be an American today, while exploring how that very idea is contested and seen through partisan lenses. The book examines not only an understanding of individual identity, but also the ways that group identity continues to contribute to further partisan cleavage and polarization. The authors also find interesting backlashes within this political dynamic, as responses to antagonistic attacks on certain groups prompts a variety of responses among voters. Identity Crisis will help readers understand what happened in 2016—from a variety of perspectives and considerations of different dimensions of American politics. I think the entire crowd fell in love- especially the cougars. Since, I've kept in touch with Taylor and am honored to have him on the show. Taylor has an incredibly inspiring story because his musical career sort of skyrocketed because he wasn?t afraid to put his talents out in front of others, and he was willing to take opportunities early even though they may not have been ultra appealing. Here are the highlights of my funky conversation with Taylor: / / 09:43 : Being born with music in his soul, playing guitar since he was 10, loving the violin on his 4th grade, and about their gigs and tours so far, / 15:05 : His prime influencers in music, / 21:28 : How he met Casey, hitting it off with him immediately and their explosive first show together, / 24:16 : How taking a chance and being open to opportunities, even if it?s not ideal, took him to where he is today, / 25:53 : Recording songs with his brother, who is from upstate New York, and the endless possibilities of creating music and art despite the distance, / 29:19 : Being well-rooted and in touch with reality, living in the moment in everything that he does, and how this all helps in his creativity and the quality of his life, and / 41:12 : What he feels is the best part of music and the euphoric feelings it brings.
