How can we work DEEP in the body without ‘blowing up' someone's trauma? Almost all somatic practitioners (including embodiment coaches) I work go through a phase of feeling super worried about activating latent trauma & triggering a client. This is a conversation I have with women a lot. Sometimes, this fear manifests as an extreme over-abundance of caution, need to “get it right” & hyper-fixation on strategies. This results in practitioners holding themselves back from deepening into sensation - to everyone's detriment, especially the clients. Today on the podcast we're speaking with Somatic Psychotherapist & founder of The School of Integrative Somatic Psychotherapy Monique Pangari about somatic approaches to trauma-centric therapy and what practitioners need to know if they are worried about activating latent trauma (plus so much more). Monique's training & experience is vast & in this conversation, we explore: - Examples of somatic strategies to support clients in a trauma therapy setting - Why embodied approach are deceptively simple & some of the core components for practitioners to make them work well - The difference between trauma therapy, therapy & coaching - What practitioners need to know if they are worried about activating a client's trauma - The importance of rupture & repair for practitioners - Attachment styles & the work Monique created for counsellors & psychotherapists About Monique Pangari Monique Pangari, MEd, SEP, is the creator of Somatic Sand Therapy™, Somatic Expressive Therapies and Somatic Attachment Focused Expressive Therapies™ (SAFE-T). In 2020 she founded 'The School of Integrative Somatic Psychotherapy' where she offers post-graduate training and clinical supervision for professional Counsellors and Psychotherapists. Monique has been practicing Sandplay Therapy and Expressive Therapies with clients of all ages since 2002 and has been training other therapists across Australia since 2008. She began integrating Somatic Experiencing® and Attachment Repatterning into her practice in 2017. Monique has undergraduate studies in Education and Psychology and holds two Masters Degrees. Have you ever been curious about the intricate world of therapy? We navigated this fascinating realm with our guest Gordon Brewer, a seasoned therapist who specializes in helping couples and men struggling with sex and pornography addictions. Gordon gave us a unique look into his work and shared insightful life lessons about overcoming addiction, the importance of being present, and the need for therapists to seek their own healing. In our deeply enriching conversation, we touched on how therapists grapple with the emotional drain of their work. We delved into vicarious trauma and the powerful necessity of self-care within the profession. We also discussed the value of an outside perspective in solving problems created by our minds. This discussion, we believe, can be a valuable lesson not only for therapists but for anyone seeking ways to understand and manage their emotions in a healthier way.On a lighter note, we pondered over the quest for happiness and meaning in life. Gordon and I revealed the key factors we believe can lead to a fulfilling existence: volunteer work, physical health, connection with others, and our ability to sit with discomfort. We discussed our personal experiences and how simple joys often trump the fear of missing out. We also introduced the Cycraft Network, a community of podcasters in the mental health and self-help genre, which we are both proud to be a part of. Join us as we journey through this enlightening and transformative conversation.YouTube Channel For The Podcast

In this episode, we speak to Pavel Ythjall. His story brings you through a slew of emotions, from sadness, to anger, to surprise, to hope, and everywhere in between. His emotional story was so awe-inspiring, it brought tears to my eyes. A tragic accident on the way to a Christmas party changed Pavel and Kat's lives forever. After just a year of marriage, Pavel found himself staring into the eyes of a neurosurgeon who told him point-blank: “Your wife will be paralyzed, neck down, for life.” At the time, Pavel had a broken neck too. His vertebrae were supported by a halo screwed directly into his skull. Karen Cadenhead was thrown into the world of cancer when she was diagnosed with anal cancer. We discuss the many challenges of cancer treatment, how to enlist help, how to build a community, ways to connect and reconnect to sources of happiness, how to take small steps, friends groups, handing the information flow for family and friends, and how to manage some of the hardest aspects of being on chemotherapy and many other drugs. Karen Cadenhead is an artist and sculptor who lives on a houseboat in Sausalito. She spent her professional career as Director of Art Therapy at a Children’s Psychiatric and Pediatric Medical Center. She went on to teach at the Graduate Institute of Expressive Therapy in Cambridge, MA. She met her husband while serving on the Board of the American Art Therapy Association. (He was their outside counsel.) Karen spent most of her life suffering from severe and frequent Migraine headaches and spent almost 50 years searching for cures and learning how to not only advocate for herself but to try to make lemonade out of a horrible disease. She found a creative way to make the suffering have meaning: Her dissertation was written about the Alchemy of turning Migraines into gold, and becoming a “wounded healer.” This experience prepared her for the cancer diagnosis she got at age 70. She has found several art forms to express this journey, and has much to share about self advocacy. She continues to live on the houseboat with her husband and occasional visits from their two grown boys. You can find Karen on Instagram @karensculptor.

Voices From the Expressive Therapies Summit Episode 1 I have been asking Barry to be a guest on the show to talk about the Expressive Therapies Summit before I even had any podcasting equipment in 2019. The idea for TCP had been brewing for several years before I began taking the necessary action steps to bring it to life. I learned that Barry, similarly had the idea for the Summit percolating within him for decades before the opportunity to breathe life into it was ripe. Barry M. Cohen, MA, ATR-BC began his career in the helping professions as a Child Life Specialist at Yale/New Haven Hospital in 1979. In 1982, while Director of Expressive Therapies at Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, VA, he developed the Diagnostic Drawing Series (DDS), a standardized art assessment and award-winning multicenter research project, still in use worldwide. Cohen is the author/co-author of numerous journal article sand chapters, and co-authored/co-edited three books, including Telling Without Talking: Art as a Window into the World of Multiple Personality, and the workbook, Managing Traumatic Stress through Art, both published in 1995. He has taught extensively in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. A professional conference planner and consumer fair promoter, he produced and chaired the Eastern Regional Conference on Trauma and Dissociation (1989-1996) and was Conference Manager of the American Art Therapy Association's 2006 and 2007 conferences. Barry joined Expressive Media as Executive Director in 2008, and introduced its Institute of the Arts in Healing Spring Institute in 2009, then founded the annual Expressive Therapies Summit in 2010. In 2013, with Eliana Gil, he co-founded the Mid-Atlantic Play Therapy Training Institute, an annual conference held just outside Washington, DC. In 2017, Barry co-founded the annual Expressive Therapies Summit: Los Angeles conference with Ping Ho of UCLArts & Healing. In this episode, Amanda shares her ingenuity with incorporated the concept of "Design Thinking" into the therapy world. She shares the catalyst for applying this idea originally and has since continued to explore the possibilities of this helpful skill. Amanda has presented on this topic at numerous conferences.Design thinking is a framework for handling problems and building new opportunities through creative thinking, innovation, and experimentation. The process includes five actions that are focused on the "client". This non-linear process includes the following actions: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Amanda gives us examples of how this process can be used in therapy to better create more dynamic, functional, and successful interventions. She explains that this process is continuous and that complacency doesn't fit into this model!Take a listen to learn more on how to get more creative by using this process to ground your actions, interventions, and thinking!Amanda Bryant, is the owner of Colorado Music Therapy Services and has over twenty years of experience working with people with neurodevelopmental differences, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. In this episode, I share my experience with Selective Mutism as a child and how creative resilience was a factor in me coming out of my shell. I was a REALLY shy kid. Like almost got held back in kindergarten because I wouldn't talk to anyone. The turned-my-head-away-from-anyone-who-looked-at-me type of shy. BUT. Put me in front of a tree and I would figure out how to climb it; to the very top. Throw me a kickball and I'd come up with a new game with my best friend/cousin. Tell me a story and I'd write three more endings. Give me one of those awesome square washcloth-making loom crafts and I'd make 50 of them in a day. (Bless my mom, she claimed everyone at work bought them for $1 each. Years later I found them hidden in a drawer!)And that was the saving grace for me. I had parents who endlessly supported my creativity throughout my childhood, teens, and early adult years. My dad being a musician was always giving me a high-five for picking up another instrument. My mom, a total craft-a-holic, would allow me to watch over her shoulder for hours as she made wood-burned spoons, Christmas dough ornaments, and stained glass stars (she made those for our wedding!). With all of that support, I eventually broke out of my shell and flourished in the right circumstances. I was lucky. So many of the children we work with don't have incredibly supportive parents. So many children have faced insurmountable trauma. So many children have developmental differences that make even the simplest things, incredibly difficult. And creativity might just be their resiliency factor. Their superpower. Their out. The research shows that creativity supports self-esteem, emotional expression, individuality, self-worth, and much more. As clinicians, we can provide that space for our clients and nurture that creativity muscle. But, we have to do some work on our end. If you haven't read the Quick Guide to Boost Creativity, don't hesitate. Simple things we can do can exponentially impact the children that we work with. Opening our eyes to their creativity, we can help them overcome the most difficult obstacles they may face. Now you know the story of why I am so passionate about this work. Catherine is here today with Linda Ugelow. Linda helps experts, authors and entrepreneurs, overcome the fear and anxiety of speaking online and on stage so they can build their brands, business and thought leadership. With her degree in Expressive Therapies, and 30 years performing experience, she's been helping people get comfortable in their skin for decades. Although she used to be terrified of speaking publicly, she now delights in storytelling, has emceed a TEDx event and hosts a TV show/podcast, Women Inspired. Linda says if you've got a big dream, a big scheme. And you can picture it and feel exhilarated. You yearn for visibility — you long to express it and share it with the world. You want to grow out your business; you want your ideal clients to find you; you want to be featured in the media; and you want to be seen as an authority to make your mark on the world. Then you hesitate, procrastinate. You don't feel camera-ready; there is a part of you that doesn't want to be seen. You see the challenge that women face is that we're not encouraged to be ambitious: We're taught to seek approval and please. We are praised for being “good,” — for being supporters, not leaders. Today on Financial Fluency I am pleased to have Linda Ugelow on the show. Linda is a Visibility and Confidence coach with a Master’s degree in Expressive Therapy who helps people clear the visibility blocks that keep them from moving forward. Linda shares how when you are able to identify these impacting influences and clear them away, suddenly you have so much more energy and confidence. This then makes putting yourself out there a peak experience and you can thrive in the connecting instead of wishing for the moment to end. Linda herself has been a performer for 35 years as a dancer, and although she is comfortable dancing in front of others, she was not at all comfortable speaking on stage and would avoid it at all costs. It took a process for her to feel confident enough to introduce herself on stage, and now brings her knowledge to others. Our conversation explores how historically women have not been very well prepared to deal with wealth, and it was men who took the financial reins most of the time, even when it was the woman who had the money to begin with - it’s just the way things were done. With more and more wealth coming into women’s lives through various mediums, be it self-generated, inherited or as a settlement, women are having to learn how to manage having wealth and the visibility that it inevitably brings about. Fear of losing the money, guilt of having more than others, fear of being judged, or not fitting in with their peers is a reality for many women who have wealth. Prior to starting her online business, Linda she was an organic farmer, growing specialty vegetables for local restaurants which fit her introverted personality. Inspired by business coaches like Marie Forleo, she began applying all of the concepts of niche marketing to obtain raving fans to her own business. She soon came to the realization that she herself wanted to help others grow, and that was what she was meant to do. Today accessibility to online business tools is easier than ever, and it is allowing for more women to start up businesses with little capital investment. When she started her business about 1 ½ years ago, Linda was bootstrapping it, and she was very proud of that. She felt as though walking the walk was more credible in her quest to help others create their future with little monetary investment. When her mother passed, she inherited some money, and found herself in a position to be able to to invest in her business. This created a struggle within herself as she felt that she was somehow cheating, and had to do a lot of money block clearing. We also discuss the impact an inheritance has on our children, and how having the conversations beforehand can really make a difference in their success. Also, avoiding having strings or conditions for obtaining the inheritance can establish a healthier attitude towards money in general in our children, and empower them to make the best possible decisions for themselves. Linda shares her message here: Many entrepreneurs and business women feel uncomfortable speaking publicly on camera or live on stage. This impacts the opportunities that they have available to them to get in front of their audience to get known and to share their knowledge. The fear itself is what is so uncomfortable and it feels impenetrable. However, It's really more like layers of veils comprised of impacting past experiences, limiting self and cultural beliefs, your own thinking process. My process and suggestions are to: 1) Release these past impacting memories, beliefs and practices; 2) Restore your sense of safety being seen and heard; 3) Expand your capacity to hold more feelings of confidence, relaxation, gratitude; 4) Rehearse for refined communication; 5) Relay your message with your new radiant presence. Getting on camera or stage doesn't have to be dreaded. It can, in fact, be a peak experience and one that you look forward to expand your sense of being. You can connect with Linda on her website at www.lindaugelow.com, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/lindaugelow/ and on her Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/lindaugelowbiz/ Quotes: The guilt with inheriting money does seem to fall heavier on women from my observations. ~Jen Turrell I feel that in terms of passing on a nest egg to our children is more about us helping them identify what they feel a life worth living is about, and identify ways that they feel compelled to make a difference in the world. ~ Linda Ugelow
I first encountered Stephen Levine through his writing. In particular his book, Poiesis: The Language of Psychology and The Speech of the Soul, which I began reading in the summer of 2004, before I started the Expressive Therapies graduate program at Lesley University. If you have noticed the name of my blog and my podcast, you can see that this book, along with Steve's chapters in the book Principles and Practices of Expressive Therapies, made just a wee bit of an impression on me. While I was at Lesley, Steve was not faculty there, and I only encountered him once in a brief workshop on creative process. I remember thinking that the way he talked reminded me of Christopher Walken. I now know Steve is a Brooklyn boy. Maybe there’s a connection? A quick google search reveals that Christopher Walken grew up worlds apart, in Queens. In any case, Steve’s accomplishments are too numerous to cover here. Briefly though, he is the Paul Celan Chair of Philosopy and Poetics in the Arts, Health, and Society Division at The European Graduate School in Switzerland. He is also the Dean of the Doctoral Program in Expressive Arts there. He along with his wife, Ellen Levine, founded THE CREATE INSTITUTE in Toronto, in 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy, and another in anthropology. He is a trained psychotherapist and Expressive Arts Therapist. He has authored numerous books, and is a passionate social/political activist. I was both thrilled and terrified when he agreed to be on my podcast. I felt as though I had wandered into a dragon’s den. As it turned out, the dragon was exceptionally kind hearted and down to earth. In this episode, we cover a lot. Steve shares some of the stories and numerous pearls of wisdom from his poietic life journey. I can't help but feel we only scratched the surface. There are a couple of glitches with the sound, but over all it does not interfere, or matter so much, as we settle into our conversation. There is one point around the 20 minute mark where my audio freaks out and goes into skip mode. You might notice a quality change in the microphones I'm using after that. I didn't edit this out because I feel like the discussion around this part is an important part of the conversation. So listen in as Steve shares stories on everything from: - his involvement with Students for a Democratic Society - his thoughts on social political critique - the meaning and practice of poiesis - therapeutic presence - approaching art-making - the history of philosophy and Heidegger and more...
