She works with fat folx, LGBTQIA+ community, grief/loss, fertility struggles and pregnancy loss, relationship challenges, family dynamics - these are all near and dear to her. She has been serving clients as a professional counselor for 12 years, working with a variety of settings and concerns. She works from a person-centered approach, using humor, mindfulness, and acceptance as tools of healing and transformation. She believes in the need to broaden our view from seeing individual struggles as collective, moving towards solutions that foster interdependence and equity. She approaches counseling as a co-creation, and considers her role to be an insightful companion through the process. She trusts the inherent wholeness of each individual. I have specific training in Expressive Arts Therapy, which utilizes art-making as therapeutic.  Lisa is strongly anti-diet and diet-culture. She is involved in the fat liberation movement. And it's impossible to talk about body politics without talking about racism, misogyny, and ableism. She is anti-capitalist, and anti-racist. She loves animals and spent years before becoming a therapist working with animals. She believes current social and economic structures have stripped our sense of community and our emotional experiences have been villainized and pathologized to the point that mental health is a growing challenge. She thinks it's a disservice to focus only on individual health without also addressing community. She does not believe in the paternalistic dynamic that she has seen in the mental health world, and she thinks to do my work well she has to be continually learning. * Fawn McCool (she/her pronouns), is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a private practice based in Portland, Oregon. Her therapeutic approach is warm, nurturing, collaborative, engaged, and nerdy. She loves brain science so there MIGHT be some mention of neural plasticity or blaming of neural pathways along the way. She will shame the patriarchy, never you. As an LCSW, she has worked in a variety of settings providing skilled trauma-informed services to families, women and children. She offers clinical therapeutic services in Tigard, OR and enjoys working with a wide variety of issues including but not limited to: trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, perinatal/postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, infant loss, and fertility issues . She received her Masters of Social Work degree at California State University, Los Angeles in 2006. Her professional credentials include certification in Interpersonal Neurobiology through Portland State University and is Ample & Rooted trained. Additionally, she has had the honor of presenting at several professional conferences focused on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit experiences, neuroscience & birth trauma, and behavioral health counseling in school based health centers. She explains that anxiety often arises due to insufficient oxygen reaching the brain. By focusing on deep belly breathing and ensuring her brain receives enough oxygen, she finds relief from fear and anxiety. Thoughts on Breathing Proper breathing plays a crucial role in managing emotions, as Kathleen Israel explains. When experiencing anxiety, she noticed that shallow breathing deprived her brain of oxygen, intensifying fear. By consciously focusing on deep, belly breathing and inhaling for a count of eight and exhaling for the same duration, she effectively replenishes oxygen levels in her brain, alleviating anxiety and restoring a sense of calm. Suggested Resources Book: Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh Book: Wisdom On the Camino: A Spiritual Journey Sharing Forgiveness and Possibilities to Inspire the Rest of Your Life by Kathleen Donnelly Israel App: Bullying Story Kathleen Israel shared a story about her son's experience with bullying. Her son, Peter, was often targeted and made to feel miserable by his classmates. One incident involved a group of altar boys who tricked Peter into thinking he was needed for an important role, only to mock him later. Despite such mistreatment, Kathleen encouraged Peter to pray for those who bullied him. Over time, the situation changed. Kathleen confronted the ringleader, Mike, who subsequently started treating Peter with kindness. As Peter grew older, his friends stood by him and included him in their activities. Kathleen believes that responding to bullies with prayer and unconditional love can help alleviate their pain and transform relationships. She emphasizes that unconditional love is a powerful force in the face of adversity.   Wisdom On The Camino Kathleen Israel's life experience has endowed her with valuable wisdom. She shares insights on the importance of conscious breathing, recognizing the impact of oxygen on the brain and its role in managing anxiety. Her journey emphasizes self-care and the transformative power of mindfulness. Non-binary individuals have always existed, but as society progresses and discussions become more open, we are seeing more and more people identify with this. In this week's episode, Heather put together a panel to discuss the concept of non-binary, why its important that parents understand how their kids perceive gender, allowing children to explore their own gender and so much more. Do not miss these highlights:03:13 – The concept of non-binary and gender fluidity.06:53 - Gender identity and the terms used can very much mean something different to every person you ask.12:40 – It's really important for anybody to be able to go to their child, to their spouse, to whoever it may be, and talk to them and understand not only your perspective, but also their perspectives.20:37 – If you child comes to you and says “this is how I identify”, ask them what that means to them so that you can understand where they are coming from. 30:30 – Even with the LGBTQ community there are certain expectations, even when trying to find yourself, which can make you feel like an imposter within that community.33:21 - By helping others understand your own process of coming to terms with who you are, how you identify in that moment will hopefully help create that supportive, healthy environment for you to continue to develop and grow.37:31 – The role of a parent when a child comes out does not necessarily mean they need to immediately understand but instead give support. 49:03 – Give your children the ability to explore and understand the world around them.1:00:03 – Having the conversation with your children about gender identity is not going to change their own identity or orientation, those have already been established by the age of 6. But you are opening them up to understand other people. About the Panel:Autumn Graham - I am Autumn, a non-binary teen who loves to discuss and have a deeper understanding of things, such as the topic of this podcast. I am a naturally curious individual who loves to learn about new things and see them from another perspective. Kate Versage - Kate is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community who specializes in helping other LGBTQ+ individuals and their families process their coming out experiences, navigate their identities, and provide support and resources for their journey through life coaching. Kate has a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapy and devotes her free time helping to educate communities, businesses and organizations on the issues and concerns that face the LGBTQ+ community.Kate is also a proud mama, Dj and Drag King.Grace (Gray) Hester - My name is Grace, I also use the name Grayson. After referring to my training in Voice Movement Therapy over several episodes, I thought it was about time it got an episode to itself! Voice Movement Therapy or VMT is, at its core, an expressive arts therapy that uses the singing voice as its primary tool of expression. I trained in VMT with its founder Paul Newham in London from 1998-2000. It has informed all of my work since then.  In this episode I discuss: A brief history of VMT The two parallel elements that run through it  The physical development of the voice and  The creative and therapeutic development of the self.  Some of the vocal components.  How we incorporate many of Carl Jung's teachings, especially  Active Imagination and work on the personal and collective Shadow. Why I think VMT is one of the most non-discriminatory methods of vocal training currently available.  If you are interested in finding out more about VMT visit www.iavmt.org where you will also find details for the next training. What is group nature based therapy really all about? It's about coming back home! It's about decolonizing therapy and the power of healing being done in nature and with the community. And how this supports the therapist! NOTE: Psychotherapists are not licensed to prescribe medication or provide medial advice in the state of California. Always consult your medical provider. Natalie, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, studied Expressive Arts Therapy under Graciela Bottoni in Buenos Aires and trained in Berkeley with the IEATA symposium 2010. She has found the Expressive Arts, including surfing and outdoor therapy, to be transformative for individuals and communities overcoming trauma, abuse, and intergenerational violence. Her therapy career has includes: working as a culture shock therapist for young expats in Buenos Aires, running expressive art therapy intensives for survivors of trafficking with IJM and Generate Hope, using yoga and art therapy to support teachers and students in the San Diego School District, and working as a social worker implementing the arts at San Diego Rescue Mission. These experiences, trainings, and mentorships plus her own personal healing through her connection with the sea inspired her to found Groundswell Community Project, a San Diego based 5013c that facilitates surf therapy for women and girls overcoming abuse, addiction, and trauma around the globe. Groundswell Community Project became a member of International Surf Therapy org in 2018 to help contribute the global research and building of best practices for the new field of surf therapy. Natalie noticed the great need for trauma informed safe and brave spaces in the surf therapy and non-profit outdoors therapy field; so created 3 levels of training to support volunteers, facilitators, and non-profit founders in this essential work. Her hope is that these trainings will support increased access to awareness and education of the impact of personal and intergenerational trauma and how surfing and the outdoors can be a transformational space for individuals and communities to find their healing, power, and belonging.
