DJ Kool is an American DJ and rapper born in 1958 who, in the late 1980s, produced several popular rap singles. Born in 1958 in Washington, D.C., his influence from his years of working the go-go and rap circuits became apparent in his music. He recorded with creative funk music from 1988 to 1992 he was then picked up by CLR records in 1992 he was then picked up by American recordings in 1996 and released the chart topping single “Let Me Clear My Throat,” which peaked at #8 in the UK Singles Chart in March 1997 and in 1996 in the U.S. The song prominently featured a sample of “The 900 Number” by DJ Mark the 45 King, (that song featured a sample from Marva Whitney's “Unwind Yourself”,repeated over a breakbeat for six minutes). The song also began by sampling “Hollywood Swinging” by Kool and the Gang. The song is a recognizable dance floor-filler, and the track remains popular to this day. DJ Kool was featured on Mýa's 2006 single “Ayo!” from her 2008 album Liberation. He was also featured on two tracks on Will Smith's 2005 album Lost and Found.

Featured in TIR Episode 151 (Part 2 of 2): Drummer Don Juan Martin, also known as Tiger Martin. James Brown for me is the biggest influence in my career. The first record I ever owned was A James Brown 7” on People records Breakin Bread. I started collecting all things James Brown related and simply became obsessed with the JB groove. He really was an incredible character and unfortunately passed away 2006 Christmas Day so I felt this was the perfect time to pay tribute to the Godfather of Soul & Funk. This mix encompasses a mixture of James Brown and his Funky People: Fred Wesley, Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Hank Ballard, Maceo Parker, The JB’s and more. Without doubt the hardest working man in show business, he toured the world constantly with his band and dancers and performed to millions bringing the Funk to the masses. Who would think back in the 60’s & 70’s that his music would be sampled and be the backbone of Hip Hop,music. The influence his music has had on so many peoples lives is extraordinary and without James Brown and his Funky people I don’t think Hip Hop and even Dance music would be the same. Thank you James RIP the original Funk Soul Brother Krafty Kuts Presents - A Tribute To James Brown Volume 1

This week on Episode #6, we have a special treat for you FleaMarket Funk readers and radio listeners out there. We were joined by The Nostalgia King, Soul Brother #1, Butta Brother and Hot Peas and Butta founder Skeme Richards as well a drummer Soki Kimura from Osaka Monaurail. They both stopped by the studio after we took them record digging and out for some burgers here in Jersey City. During the course of the show we play some funky stuff from around the globe, talk the 45 game, reissuing records, choice hamburgers, shady promoters, staying in our own lane, and more. We also talk to drummer Soki Kimura from Tokyo, Japan about his involvement in Osaka Monaurail, his influences, and his touring time with the great Marva Whitney. After our interview (which took place in a raging snowstorm!), Skeme gets down to business and laces us with a 35 minute mix of funky records of all sorts, mostly from Japan and abroad. Needless to say, there is no track list, so like the old days, you'll have to search for these titles. We were honored to have both in the studio, and hope you enjoy this as much as we did! It's definitely one for the books.
