Sometimes life gives you lemons, and sometimes your mom just up and dies. Crooklyn! A family in a brownstone is going through some trouble in the 70s. Dad's failed as a musician, there's a whole pile of kids, and mom is getting real sick of all it. What's a family to do? Ship one of the kids off to relatives I guess. Can I do that? Can I send a kid away for an extended period of time? One of us loves this, the other sighs. Rate and review us? It would be real cool if you did.

Spike Lee's Summer of Sam should have been the perfect 1999 movie. After Lee's breakthrough 1989 film Do the Right Thing, he was on a roll in the 90s, giving us 1990s' Mo Better Blues, 1991's Jungle Fever, 1992's Malcolm X, 1994's Crooklyn, 1995's Clockers, 1996's Get on the Bus, and 1998's He Got Game. And so a gritty, Scorsese-esque New York crime like Summer of Sam headlined by the rising star Brody and Leguizamo at his most popular seemed like a no-brainer. And maybe because its nearly two and a half hour run time just didn't appeal to audiences in the middle of summer, for some reason SoS (which served as a near-perfect metaphor for the anxiety of pre-Y2K America) just never caught on with critics or at the box office. But has our equally volatile (and true crime obsessed) 2024 America made the film newly relevant? And where does it stand in Spike Lee's oeuvre? To discuss, John welcomed back film and culture writer and frequent guest Julia Sirmons to the show.

Welcome the wacky world of Spoilerpiece! Why wacky? Because for our first film, Megan and Dave watched Kit Zauhar's THIS CLOSENESS (2:33), one of the most indie films to ever indie, and we're not sure it's a good movie…but it's not bad, either? And the ending is…we're not sure also? And every character in it is an assbag, but that's OK? Good sound work, by the way... WTF is this movie, exactly? Hey, if you see it, you tell us. Then Evan, Megan, and Dave watched JIM HENSON IDEA MAN (23:21), Ron Howard's Disney+ documentary that goes in-depth-ish on Henson, his early partnership with his wife, his early experimental films, and how that experimentation showed up in lots of projects throughout the rest of his career. In honor of its upcoming 25th anniversary (as well as a chance meeting between the director and guest Matt Belenky), we're unlocking our episode on Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam'. Here's what we had to say about this monumental work back in the summer of 2022: Writer Matt Belenky joins us from New York in the midst of a heat wave to discuss Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam', an exuberant survey of Outer Boroughs New York in the late 1970s as well as a chilling study of working class anxiety, paranoia, and scapegoating of the Other. We discuss the many controversies surrounding the film's release (a common through line with Lee's films), the impeccable performances of the oft-undersung leads - including career-best work from John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino, and the textured analysis of a politically tumultuos era that bears more than a few similarities to the Summer of 1999 in which the film was released. Follow Matt Belenky on Twitter. B. Cox and J Owe look back at Black Moon's debut classic album Enta Da Stage as it turns 30. The Brooklyn trio made up of DJ/producer DJ Evil Dee and emcees Buckshot (fka Buckshot Shorty) and 5ft began their journey in high school, shopping around demos and looking for a deal. Impressed by the group, they signed with Nervous Records and was given the green light to record their first single "Who Got Da Props?".Featuring smooth samples with crisp drums and impeccable cuts, the album spun tales of life in Brooklyn and with Buckshot and 5 ft expertly wordsmithing pictures that painted a dark picture for listeners and observers.Featuring the likes of future Boot Camp Clik mates Smif-N-Wessun, Dru Ha and Havoc from an also upcoming rap group Mobb Deep, the album featured a similar motif and sound like other groundbreaking New York-based rap albums like Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders,The Sun Rises In The East, Ready to Die and Illmatic over the next 12 months that have been credited with helping to bring a focus and emphasis back to East Coast hip-hop in the midst of a dominant West Coast run.The album, while not selling well commercially, was widely acclaimed by fans, particularly underground heads and the media alike. SPIKE LEE: "Crooklyn" (1994)

Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 1, 2023

CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of racism, childhood grief, dysfunctional families, parental anger, drugs, poverty, grief, loss. After another Spike masterpiece (one we've both seen already), Spike geared up for one of his most personal projects to date. Written as a TV pilot by Spike's sister Joie and brother Cinqué, Spike reigns everything back in to show a family, both good and bad, living in Brooklyn in 1973. It moves more like a series of scenes than an actual movie, but the characters here are among some of his best, and Spike is willing to lay everything in front of us: the anger, the dysfunction, the sorrow, and the love. It doesn't hurt that he's got Alfre Woodard and Delroy Lindo as the parents either, nor an outstanding child performance from Zelda Harris. It's a really good movie, subtle but true and a delight to watch. Turn the TV off and make sure you clean your dishes as we discuss 1994's Crooklyn this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Delroy Lindo is a veteran actor and writer. Born in London to Jamaican parents, Delroy spent his childhood moving from place to place. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Toronto and then San Francisco, where he began studying acting at the American Conservatory Theater. He spent the next decade alternating between movie roles and Broadway stages. His versatility in Crooklyn, Get Shorty, The Cider House Rules, and more only increased his demand. Currently, Delroy is starring in the new Hulu series Unprisoned. It's about a father who reconnects with his adult daughter after serving a 17-year prison sentence. He plays Edwin, whose life changes when he moves in with his therapist daughter Paige, played by Kerry Washington. Delroy has been a public figure for a long time, and for most of that time, he didn't really talk about himself. Now? He's writing a memoir. On this episode of Bullseye, we asked him what changed.

A.V. Rockwell's feature debut won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance earlier this year. Now it's in theaters, and anyone who goes to see it won't be able to miss the love and honesty in her depiction of New York City. So perhaps it's not surprising that she brought us a character from another New York City coming-of-age movie (albeit about a different borough than her native Queens). It's Troy, the young girl who sits at the center of Spike Lee's 1994 movie, CROOKLYN. Then Jordan has one quick thing about her beloved YELLOWJACKETS (season 1 spoiler alert!).***With Jordan Crucchiola and A.V. Degenerates Welcome... "For those of you who don't know, the MMA Vivisection is Bloody Elbow's long-running pre-fight breakdown show. Where we pick over all the ins, outs, odds-and-ends of each and every fight on any given card on any given week. Over time we've tended toward the UFC end of things, but now that we're going indie who knows, we might just branch out a bit. The Vivisection was started back in 2013 by 'Kid' Nate Wilcox and Dallas Winston, and I, Zane Simon, took over hosting duty shortly afterward. I'm joined each week by my trusty co-host Connor Ruebusch, and together we've recorded more than 600 episodes as of 2023. Alongside the Vivisection, I also host the 6th Round Post-Fight Show with Eddie Mercado. Started back in 2014, we're currently more than 300 episodes deep, bringing fans all the post-event hot takes they could ever hope to handle. For fans looking to support our work as Bloody Elbow leaves the VOX network of sites, first podcast patreon is a great place to start. It's also likely going to be the only place to access our non-UFC week podcast, the MMA Depressed-us in the future... BONUS: Higher tier Degens can access your chance to tell us what to do. For those brave enough to take on the 'Ultimate Degen' tag, we'll take fight suggestions for 'The MMA Depressed-us' (anything but Namajunas/Esparza 2). And we'll read out your fight pick/breakdown on air for the MMA Vivisection. Potentially other future options could include: special event Vivisection requests, fantasy fight breakdowns, and other exclusive content." *** The Vivi shows & 6th Rd will continue to be posted, for free on BE, SoundCloud, YouTube and all of our other podcasting apps going forward. However, the Patreon will give fans exclusive access to the MMA Depressed-us from here on out. The MMA Vivisection: Hosted by Zane Simon, alongside co-host Connor Ruebusch. Zane and Connor have been recording the Vivi for nearly a decade week in and week out, as the UFC schedule demands. UFC Fighter Pay Discussion with John Nash | Crooklyn's Corner - 31

Bloody Elbow Presents

EPISODE 31 Fighter pay has been the hottest topic over the last two weeks because of Luke Rockhold going full scorched earth with the UFC and Dana. Give your thoughts on what Luke said, especially the part where he mentioned Dana basically being given the reins to run the UFC however he sees fit. We've spoken on this before but Luke Rockhold's comments still raise the theory that things were so much better for the fighters under the Fertittas. Were they or is that a bunch of smoke and mirrors? Luke mentioned leverage and how the UFC has it all. How can the fighters get leverage outside of some sort of solidarity movement/strike etc? Are there other things they can do to leverage themselves, and I'm talking about fighters from the entry level floor all the way to champion level. Ariel recently had Sean O'Malley on and you just can't watch that interview without coming away thinking Sean has done a complete 180. I saw on your timeline you agreed with some things Ariel was saying. Would you elaborate a bit for our listeners on the parts you agree with and your take on O'Malley's comments. Paulo Costa says he only made $35K for the Vettori fight. I was absolutely aghast when I saw that. Paulo is 11-2 and has been in a title fight. How in the world does something like this happen? You've had the opportunity to look at several UFC contracts. Do they all have escalators built in? Like is that a standard for all contracts or just for the ones savvy enough to ask for it? The infamous Dana White vs. MMA Media went back up recently and I saw a comment you made that said there was no mention of fighters having to waive gross negligence on the UFC's part before they could return to the octagon. Please elaborate on that. Another topic that's been on fire is interim titles. Give your take on whether they're a good thing, a bad one, or maybe a little bit of both. What's your take on James Krause doing an official UFC betting show while actively training fighters? One Championship made its debut tonight on Amazon Prime. I couldn't help but notice that there wasn't a hashtag trend big enough to even show up in sports trends, much less the main portion of Twitter. Is that indicative of anything, or am I reading too much into that? I saw that they recently moved all their shares to a Grand Cayman Islands entity, essentially re-domiciling there. Please explain what re-domiciling means and why this is sort of a big deal. Oleksandr Usyk is on track to be the highest boxing earner this year. How did he manage that? Deontay Wilder said that boxing isn't really a sport, it's just a business. Would you agree with his assessment? It's almost a forgone conclusion that Saudi Arabia will get Fury-Usyk. Is there a real gain for them to continue dumping massive money towards sportswashing? His infrequent film and television work has seen him appearing in Leonard Part 6 with Bill Cosby, NBC's Midnight Caller, ABC's King of Love, MTV's Liquid Television's Las Apassionadas, and commercials — most notably one directed by Gus Van Sant for Miller Genuine Draft. Woodard co-starred in Lifetime's hit remake of Steel Magnolias, for which she was nominated for Screen Actors Guild and Emmy Awards, and won a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Ouiser. Most recently, she appeared in the acclaimed drama 12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, plus New Line's Annabelle, and the Netflix Original feature Juanita, as the title character. Somehow she also found time to star in Marvel'S Luke Cage as the diabolical Mariah Dillard, and she also appeared in the Apple series SEE, opposite Jason Momoa. Woodard also gave voice to Sarabi in Jon Favreau's Live Action The Lion King. Recently, her riveting portrayal of a death row prison warden in Chinonye Chukwu's Clemency, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.Whilst building this illustrious career, Alfre co-founded Artists for a New South Africa, a nonprofit working to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and further the cause of democracy and human rights in South Africa and the U.S. For this and her anti apartheid activism she was honored with the Order of Companions of Oliver Tambo, that country's highest civilian medal. Alfre directed and produced, Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales, which won the 2010 Audiobook of the Year, and garnered a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for "Best Children's Spoken Word Album." "We do that by working for justice."Woodard is unfazed by the glitz of celebrity, but is grateful for its opportunity to "get her to the mic".  She remains fueled by the values she learned growing up in Tulsa. In November 2014, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and took the opportunity to credit her parents in her acceptance remarks. Her parents, always mindful of the hardship of others, "planted the seed of humanity" in her as a child. "They allowed me artistic as well as personal freedom. They didn't say 'go out and conquer' or 'go out and accumulate,' they just said 'Go. Do it. Be it. Be yourself. Fill yourself all the way up, Alfre, and never, ever forget your neighbor.'"

If you look at some of the big and mostly troubling economic trends in the overall US economy from the last three or four decades, the business of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts captures a stunning number of them: rising income and wealth inequality; increased firm concentration in some economic sectors, sometimes because they bought out their competition; the declining share of the money that companies make that goes to workers; the decline of unions; the gig economy; the lack of bargaining power that workers have when they negotiate wages with their companies. John S Nash, a journalist for Bloody Elbow, joins Cardiff to discuss the economic history of MMA and the sport's dominant company, the UFC -- and to reveal the many ways that the sport captures the extreme version of so many broader economic trends within the US economy. And after the credits, they also give their predictions for UFC 269.
