As broadcast June 10, 2022 with plenty of laughs in memory for our stream experience. Tonight we welcomed Dutch Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdana De Rijcke to the show to talk about her new EP "Coming Home," which drops on Tuesday. Inspired and written by her dearly departed father Rob, Nurdjana took these songs and put her own imprint on them to both pay tribute and bring closure to the process of loss. Despite the background of loss, this two hour show is certainly a summery celebration of music, with Nurdjana bringing her favorites to the forefront in a playlist of inspirations to her soulful sound.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Gnarls Barkley – CrazyKobo Town – London TownJupiter & Okwess – Na KozongaCymande - BraFinley Quaye – Sunday ShiningThe Roots – The Seed 2.0 Part II (31:49)Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy – Yu Ya YummaQuadron – Slippin'Kendra Morris – This LifeBetty Harris – There's A Break In The RoadLyn Collins – Take Me Just As I AmMarijata – No Condition Is Permanent Part III (61:34)Nurdjana – Do The Right ThingStevie Wonder – Higher GroundAretha Franklin – Save MeLake Street Dive – Good KisserSharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – How Do I Let A Good Man Down?Jamie Lidell – Another Day Part IV (94:29)Nurdjana – She Gives Me WaterMadcon – Beggin'John Legend – Save RoomJoss Stone – Put Your Hands On MeAmy Winehouse – Back To BlackMayer Hawthorne – A Long Time

As broadcast January 28, 2022 with plenty of heartache to throw in for your podcast bust-up. Just a smattering of new cuts out the past week or so in the funk and soul corner of the music matrix, mostly dealing with breakups and relationships, so we decided to let it all out with a breakup- and makeup-focused first hour for this week's Sampled sampler. Very strong new tunes and some big announcements of forthcoming albums though, with Lee Fields and Mamas Gun both announcing upcoming LP's for 2022 with their latest singles. Dan Lloyd then joins us once again for our weekly AMPED feature, with lots of new music out this week in the rock realm. Mainly feeling vindicated that the Yard Act album was indeed as good as advertised, we also checked out the latest from Pinegrove, Franz Ferdinand, Guerilla Toss, and many other worthy artists during the hour, with a tribute to the dearly departed but always controversial and aloof in life and death Meatloaf to close.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Lyn Collins – Think (About It)Kelly Finnigan – Since I Don't Have You AnymoreTyrone Davis – Can I Change My MindBobby Oroza – Your Love Is Too ColdTeddy Grossman – Giving UpFerris & Sylvester – Golden Part II (30:39)Durand Jones & The Indications – Giving UpLee Fields – Ordinary LivesMamas Gun – Looking for MosesBen L'Oncle Soul – StayOV Wright – Let's Straighten It OutThe Funkees – Baby I Need YouKOKOROKO – Carry Me Home Part III (63:33)Eels – The MagicYard Act – Dead HorseGhost – Call Me Little SunshineGuerilla Toss – Cannibal CapitalFranz Ferdinand – CuriousFoo Fighters – Fraggle Rock Rock Part IV (94:47)Jethro Tull – The Zealot GeneStereophonics – ForeverHot Water Music – Collect Your Things and RunPinegrove – RespirateMeat Loaf – Paradise By the Dashboard Light

Doing it to death, the relentless pouring of sweat and grit to hold it down and be an accompanist for the greatest self-expressionist of our time. My guest kept the beat and played the rhythms that helped James Brown reach international stardom. He would play the same groove for 15 minutes while Jimmy Brown carried on and drove those rhythms Stone Soul Lyrics captured from all the urban venues that existed at one time in this country. My guest still is secure enough to play out and pass the peas or dish on The Revolution of the Mind. He made love music with Fred Thomas, Fred Wesley, double drums with Clyde Stubblefield who along with my guest is the most sampled drummer in modern electronic beats. It's not music because there's no real people playing the music. A real person like my guest would have to keep the beat while James would riff for 18 minutes asking The aforementioned Wesley to take a jazz solo in the same vein as JJ Johnson. My guest feels the groove. He along with Bernard Purdie, Idris Muhammad and and Zigaboo Modeliste helped fuse Gulf Coast Blues with Jazz and Gospel bringing in Funk. The kind of funk that Lyn Collins or Bobby Byrd felt. It continues today with a beat as strong as ever playing in different amalgamations of The JBs and locally @ The Red Bar in Mobile Alabama. James Brown for me is the biggest influence in my career. The first record I ever owned was A James Brown 7” on People records Breakin Bread. I started collecting all things James Brown related and simply became obsessed with the JB groove. He really was an incredible character and unfortunately passed away 2006 Christmas Day so I felt this was the perfect time to pay tribute to the Godfather of Soul & Funk. This mix encompasses a mixture of James Brown and his Funky People: Fred Wesley, Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Hank Ballard, Maceo Parker, The JB’s and more. Without doubt the hardest working man in show business, he toured the world constantly with his band and dancers and performed to millions bringing the Funk to the masses. Who would think back in the 60’s & 70’s that his music would be sampled and be the backbone of Hip Hop,music. The influence his music has had on so many peoples lives is extraordinary and without James Brown and his Funky people I don’t think Hip Hop and even Dance music would be the same. Thank you James RIP the original Funk Soul Brother Krafty Kuts Presents - A Tribute To James Brown Volume 1

This episode is dedicated to the great John 'Jabo' Starks, who sadly passed away this week. Jabo, along with Clyde Stubblefield shared drum duties during the golden period of James Brown (& James Brown Family) recordings. In this episode, we feature some of his finest work with James Brown, The J.B's, Maceo, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, Little Junior Walker and BB King. Whilst James Brown may well be the most sampled artist, it is Starks and Stubblefiled that have laid the foundation to Breakbeats. They were originators in their day and defined at least 2 genres of music. We play some well-known tunes this week - this is hardly surprising when you think about the impact 'Jabo' made on modern music. You will be greatly missed and you have left us with some truly outstanding music. THANK YOU 'JABO'

Every now and again at Boom Bap Radio we’ve got to give pause and take a deeper look at the art form that has reshaped popular music in the 21st Century. Hailing Hip-Hop as the true resurrector of American music and pop culture, the BBR crew digs in the crates and plays not its normal funky music, but also the original songs they sampled. Masta Talka, J-Crush The Angry Engineer and C.O. take a walk on the wild side with the help of Lou Reed; A Tribe Called Quest; Lyn Collins, The Real Roxanne, Busta and Flipmode Squad, the Latin Rascals as well as Mozart and Beethoven – yeah, I said it – funky –ass Ludwig Van! We also recount the week’s biggest headlines, despite threats from George Zimmerman, a crack binge from Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and a tawdry, but scenic motorcycle ride with Kimye. Ah ha honey, it’s Boom Bap Radio!
