As we dust off the microphones, for a mid-Winter update, we wanted to share a little bit about what is going on in our lives. An emotional trip with Michele's mother to Florida's shores, set against the backdrop of her cancer fight, left an indelible mark on us, one not captured in our episodes but forever etched in our memories. Matt has also stepped back into the world of medicine, embracing the rhythms of life at the VA healthcare system, which has been both encompassing and rewarding. Through it all, we've found solace in spontaneous Sunday drives, embracing the unexpected delights of the open road and the laughs that come with getting wonderfully lost. Our backyard has transformed into a natural theater, displaying the constant flow of mountain wildlife that sparks deep awe for the beauty of our mountain home. From numerous coyote sightings that stirred conversations about the elusive 'coywolves' to the generational dance of raccoons and the bears that challenge our fish ponds, we recount these encounters with appreciation, wonder and love. And as the calendar flutters toward the fresh start of our 2024 season of MMO, we grow wretless for the return of outdoor escapades, from April's blossoms to October's crisp fall canvas. So tune in, adventure seekers and laughter lovers, as we gear up for another year of storytelling, discovery, and the simple, unscripted joys that intentionally unintentional travel unfurls. This program brought to you by:The Angler MagazineSunrift Adventures Thank you for listening to this program. (FROM MATT) I have to be honest with y'all. I haven't been feeling very motivated to talk about the news in recent days. It brings me down, gets me angry or leaves me feeling disenfranchised toward my fellow citizens, inevitably. And I don't know what to do about it. I WANT to engage with people. I CARE about things going on around us. I BELIEVE we can still get right with each other. But the way things are structured these days with social and broadcast media - I've been feeling a bit frazzled and cautious. So I posted to my social media feed, asking if anyone else felt the same way. I wanted to know if anyone had ideas or suggestions on a way forward. So many people wrote back expressing their own desire to see things improve in our nation. I can't thank each of you enough for all of the amazing comments of encouragement, support and clarity. I really truly feel like many of you "see me". It's empowering. I've been deep in thought, contemplation and prayer after reading this thread and talking to loved ones outside social media. I was brought back to an old show I used to do that was syndicated around the Southeast. It was called "Side Street America" and I did it for about 2 years - even though I don't remember if I ever allowed it to air in Asheville or not. The reason for that was because I was going through a very dark time in my personal life and I was avoiding the public stage here in my hometown because I didn't want to deal with the pressure of being who I thought others wanted me to be. The other reason I did the show, which was all about positive news stories, people overcoming hardship and communities rallying together to survive tragedy, etc, was because I needed to be constantly reminded during that time that there was good in the world and that there were loving, caring and "others-centered" people still out there. Like I said, it was a dark time in my personal life with a lot of loss, anger and feelings of betrayal, I didn't want to fall victim to that outlook. This show helped me get through it with my heart still in tact. So, for today's "Matt Mittan Show", I decided to revisit that old weekly program - based on so much of what has been said in this thread. I do hope you will listen to it, as I will, so we can remember who we are. I didn't listen in advance - I just pulled an old show file - recorded an intro - and uploaded it. I figured I would let fate take the wheel on what is in the episode. Thank you again. You all are wonderful and I love you dearly! - Matt.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Mittan)

The history he grew up learning and seeing helped inform his perspectives in this current situation. The history of shared suffering and violations runs from one end of the Indigenous experience to the other. And the questions are also asked, and addressed in Part II of this discussion, "Why is Buncombe County government jumping into a project happening 100 miles away?"
