161. Sam Turner – A Vision for a New Zealand Wildfire

In this episode, Dave reconnects with Sam Turner, a passionate disciple-maker from Northland, New Zealand. Sam shares his journey of faith, family, and a God-given vision to see New Zealand and the nations ignited for Jesus. From the UK to Western Australia Sam's move to Exmouth, WA, became a pivotal time of spiritual awakening (not to mention meeting his wife). He shares how a simple invitation to an Indigenous family for a meal blossomed into something deeply transformative. Sam met his German wife in WA. Married for just 3.5 years, they already had five children, including twins. Ministry isn't just Sam's calling—it's a family mission. A Prodigal's Return Throughout his young adults years, Sam sensed a persistent nudge from God, with a constant inner voice saying, “have more faith in me.” This quiet yet powerful prompting drew him back to Jesus. He immersed himself in Scripture—reading through the Bible multiple times in just a year—and was deeply moved by God's unwavering pursuit and faithfulness. The Move to New Zealand Sam's wife, passionate about permaculture, prompted the family's move to NZ. Arriving with a burdened heart for what they saw as a "fatherless nation," they connected with a local church, and Sam became a pastor. Vision of the Matchbox However a divine dissatisfaction stirred in Sam's heart. He had a vision: a match striking a box, igniting flames that spread across a map of New Zealand and onto other continents. God was calling him to not hinder the Spirit and to teach the Word unapologetically. Discovering DMM Through a testimony of the power of prayer in Africa and the appearance of a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) sheet, Sam discovered the potential of Disciple Making Movements (DMM). Reading Contagious Disciple Making (by David and Paul Watson) confirmed his direction, and a team began to form. “DMM is just a word we use to describe what God is doing.” – DMM Leader Shifting Paradigms Sam emphasises that DMM is not a method but Jesus' model which continued throughout the book of Acts. This led Sam to re-evaluate the Great Commission and how teaching must be centred on obedience to Jesus, including the making of disciple-makers. Transformation Stories From drug dealers becoming disciples to gang members walking away from crime, Sam shares powerful stories of transformation. Social change follows spiritual obedience with families not just individuals being reached. Sam also shares about his 12-year-old son who began a DBS with his friends. This sparked a new ministry—Kids for Kids—led by Sam's wife, where children are now discipling other children. Persistent Dissatisfaction Despite the fruit, Sam is still hungry for more. He sees DMM as a key to global transformation and longs to see a multiplying movement across New Zealand and beyond. “Culture has moved, but the church hasn't kept up.” Sam challenges the traditional mindset of church, calling for a return to the Spirit-led, disciple-making patterns of the New Testament. A Word of Encouragement Sam leaves us with a challenge and an encouragement: “We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10 Reflective Questions: What desires has God placed on your heart? Who in your sphere of influence is He calling you to reach? God has prepared the works—He's simply looking for a willing heart to say "yes". Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 17:48

In this episode, Dave catches up with Mike Porteous while connecting with the Praxeis team and disciple-makers in New Zealand. Mike is a seasoned missions and church leader who has embraced a Disciple-Making Movement (DMM) paradigm—both locally and as far afield as Zambia. He shares his journey, key insights, and encouragement to keep disciple-making simple and Spirit-led. Mike's Journey From a farming background, Mike had a powerful encounter with God at 21 that launched him into decades of mission work—from the Philippines in the '70s to serving with groups including YWAM since 1980. In the early 1990s, while on staff at what is now Gracecity Church, Mike's hunger for real and lasting mission impact grew. Introduced to DMM through others and inspired by David and Paul Watson's book Contagious Disciple Making, Mike knew this was a path he needed to pursue. What's Happening Now? Mike's DMM work has expanded into Zambia through a connection with a Sri Lankan man working there. Though 90% of Zambians are churchgoers, transformation was lacking. But through simple DBS tools, real change is taking root. Today, three DBS streams are multiplying, and Mike continues coaching leaders to sustain and grow the movement. Back in New Zealand Despite initial slow traction, Mike's persistence in starting DBS groups has led to surprising breakthroughs. One key moment came during a Sunday night training north of Auckland—attended by Sam Turner, who's now seeing movement among gang communities. Multiplication is happening, and Sam is running far beyond what he could do himself.* Key Shifts in Mike's Thinking Discovery over Teaching – Moving from telling to facilitating, Mike has learned to trust God to reveal His Word through others. Simple Tools for Equipping – He's passionate about helping people uncover their God-given purpose and equipping them with tools that multiply through simplicity. Challenges Prayer – Building prayer teams and rhythms that moves people from a place of conviction in prayer to seeing transformation. Leadership Development – Particularly in Zambia, where structure is needed for lasting depth in an over-evangelised context. Discernment – In New Zealand, Mike is asking: Who is the Spirit highlighting to invest in? Final Encouragement Mike reminds us of two things: “The key people are probably already in your orbit....We tend to complicate things. Keep it super simple.” *Hear more of the stories of God moving amongst gang members in the north of New Zealand at the end of this podcast.

With a strong finance background, Sam served as the Financial Director (FD) of a significantly large business owned by private equity, engaging in the integration of acquired competitors and managing the commercial function globally. After his corporate career, Sam transitioned to entrepreneurship, focusing on building a group of companies. He is currently the head of Advantos Group, where he specializes in buying and selling small businesses within the mechanical, electrical, and facilities management services sector.Summary: Host Ronald Skelton welcomes Sam Turner of the Advantos Group to discuss the intricacies of acquiring and selling small businesses in the UK. Sam shares his transition from a career in the travel industry to creating a conglomerate of small businesses that serve a niche market in the B2B space.Sam Turner's journey is compelling as he divulges the strategy behind choosing non-consumer-facing ventures within industries that display significant fragmentation and resilience to technological disruptions. Throughout the conversation, Sam emphasizes the philosophy of collaboration, avoiding business integration to preserve the uniqueness of each acquired company, and maintaining their operations and brand. This approach underscores the delicate balance between maximizing shareholder value and retaining the individual strengths of small businesses within the group. Key Takeaways:Collaboration vs. Integration: Sam Turner advocates for the approach of collaboration among acquired businesses, rather than full integration, to reduce risk and maintain the independence and specialties of each company.Identifying Acquisitions: The Adventos Group seeks out small businesses with revenues between £4 million and £20 million, offering mechanical, electrical, and hard facilities management services with a minimum of 7% EBITDA margin.Employee Engagement: Sam highlights the importance of understanding the direct impact employees have on the business. He mentions plans to create a 'growth fund,' offering staff skill development opportunities.Profit Margins in Small vs. Large Enterprises: The conversation reveals an inverse relationship between the size of the business and profit margins within the industry, with smaller businesses often having better margins due to less competitive tendering.Building the Employer of Choice: The ultimate goal for Adventos Group is to be the employer of choice, creating an environment where talent retention and acquisition are driven by multiple factors that surpass just the wage component.--------------------------------------------------Contact Sam onLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-turner-advantos/Website: http://www.advantos.com/--------------------------------------------------How2Exit Joins IT ExchangeNet's Channel Partner Network!Have an IT Company doing between $5M and $30M You may Sell? Productive Machines is on a mission to provide a 15-minute turnaround from receiving data on its cloud-based, artificial intelligence platform to delivering a click-and-play machining protocol that enables manufacturers to machine the best part, faster, first time. John Yates talks to the spin-out team whose software-as-a-service is driving step changes in productivity and sustainability. Walking along the second-floor corridor to the Productive Machines' workspace in the AMP Technology Centre, Rotherham, Dr Erdem Ozturk stops to look through the window at the Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future, whose 3,000sq/m of machining workshops were his research and development laboratory for more than a decade. Erdem led the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre's brilliant Machining Dynamics Technology Group, which grew in the innovation environment enabled by Dr Sam Turner and AMRC co-founder Professor Keith Ridgway which propelled the Factory of the Future to global leader in aerospace milling. Their success was achieved by adapting and refining the fiendishly complex mathematical models of machining research pioneers like Franz Koenigsberger and Jiri Tlusty whose ideas were turned into game-changing operational manufacturing methods by their former students, and now professors in their own right, Yusuf Altintas, Scott Smith and Tom Delio. Perhaps the AMRC's biggest success came in 2014 when they applied these theoretical models to vibration control, cutting tool design, and residual stress management in a SAMULET project that was to revolutionise the manufacturing of Rolls-Royce aero-engine discs and shaft components.  The improvements in quality, alongside the time and cost savings achieved in the manufacture of the fan disc, have become folklore in the AMRC and the close-knit aerospace manufacturing community: a 50% reduction in cycle times and right-first-time production rates rising from 85% to over 99%. Coupled with cost-savings of £135m, this made UK jet engine production globally competitive, safeguarding 400 high-value-added jobs and unlocking a £300m investment in a North East plant. Not content with this success, Erdem and his AMRC team, along with European partners, began harnessing the power of information technology to push the boundaries of the possible, creating state-of-the-art digital twins that combined machine tool dynamics, control loops, tool-path generation and machining processes, to boost productivity, extend tool life and eliminate chatter. Productive Machines traces its lineage back to this remarkable pedigree. Formed in 2021, shortly before joining an elite group of start-ups on the ATI Boeing Accelerator programme – over 200 applicants from 44 countries were whittled down to just ten – the business was explicit from the start in its mission to maximise the productivity and sustainability of machine tools.  “We are using our unique digital twin to simulate millions of combinations of machine settings to arrive at the optimum feed rate and spindle speed settings for a given process before manufacturing. This eliminates chatter vibrations and provides machining optimisation, preventative maintenance and part quality that may not be achieved by a human operator even with years of continuous improvement,” says Erdem, who now leads a growing international team of machining physics developers and software engineers from their base in the heart of South Yorkshire's Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District. Having raised a cumulative £3m investment, the company launched its Feed Rate Calculator and Spindle Speed Calculator apps in October and November last year respectively. This was followed by an early access programme for a predictive maintenance service for spindle health monitoring in December.  In the next few months, they will be launching the fully automated cloud based system that achieves a 15-minute turnaround from receiving data on its artificial intelligence platform to delivering a click-and-play machining protocol that enables manufacturers to machine the best part, faster, first time. “We saw there was a massive opportunity to turn our cutting-edge technology into a simple, straightforward Software as a Service (SaaS) product,” Erdem adds. “Using artificial intelligence and digital twins of the milling process, we can identify vibration-free parameters and automatically personalise the process to eliminate chatter. This opens up a future where cutting optimisation technology is accessible to all, regardless of the scale of operation” One early client, Yorkshire headquartered Ficep UK, a leading supplier of structural steel and plate fabrication machine tools, has seen process productivity increase by 110%, with cycle times cut by 53% while reducing the magnitude of vibrations five times. Other clients report reductions in machining design and set-up times of 20%; cycle times reduced between ten to more than 50%; operational and maintenance costs cut by 25%; and cutting tool costs reduced by 11%  An additional benefit of this software-as-a-service is the way it can dramatically reduce manufacturers' carbon footprint. “By finally solving the age-old and frustrating problem of machine tool chatter, we calculate that our technology could save a staggering 2.5 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions between now and 2050,” Erdem says. To put this into perspective, 2.5 gigatonnes is equivalent to the UK's total carbon emissions - every factory, fire, car, flight and light - for six years. While work continues in developing and refining the AI platform for launch in the spring, it's fascinating to learn that an essential piece of kit in this operation is one of the oldest in the toolbox: the tap test. Used in aerospace engineering since the 1950s, the tap test relies on simple physics: the kinetic impulse of a hammer strike dissipated as vibration and sound.  However, where traditional tap testing relied on skilled individuals to interpret the sounds made by the struck object, such as a machine tool, today's digital tap tests are much more sophisticated and precise. Instead of transmitting vibration responses to the ear as an acoustic sound wave, a digital tap hammer sends the vibration response as data to a computer for recording and analysis. Specialist software then calculates the precise frequency response from those vibrations, considering parameters like the frequency, amplitude, and decay rate of the vibrations, and enables an exact analysis of that tool's unique characteristics and condition.  From its origins, the age-old practice of tap testing has not only endured but has evolved into an even more powerful tool in the era of smart manufacturing, becoming a critical component of quality control, material characterisation, structural health monitoring. “Digital tap testing, enhanced by AI, is ushering in a new era of precision and efficiency in manufacturing. It empowers manufacturers to optimise machine tool performance, reduce waste, and enhance product quality. It is democratising condition-monitoring and predictive maintenance, enabling even small-scale operators to benefit from data-driven technologies without costly investments in sensors or infrastructure,” Erdem added. Although focused on the future, Erdem is also a keen student of machining history and one of his go-to authors is the American Quaker Frederick Taylor, best known for bringing the ‘scientific method' to the early factory system making it more efficient and productive.  Taylor also wrote a book On the Art of Cutting Metals, published in 1907, which identified “chatter as the most obscure and delicate of all problems facing the machinist – probably no rules or formulae can be devised which will accurately guide the machinist in taking maximum cuts and speeds possible without producing chatter.” Erdem smiles and says Taylor was absolutely right. “There were no formulae available to predict chatter vibrations until 1954 when Tlusty was able to formulate the absolute stability limit for chip width for turning operations. That meant if the process planner selected a chip width smaller than this limit, the process would be stable and there would not be chatter vibrations irrespective of the spindle speed used.” Seventy years on since the formulation of Tlusty's law for the identification of chatter stability lobes in turning processes, the Productive Machines team are coming very close to proving Frederick Taylor wrong by accurately guiding the machinist in making maximum cuts and speeds possible without producing chatter for machining processes.  That, I suspect, matters as much to this team as turning a profit.  It would certainly delight Keith Ridgway: “If I were starting the AMRC today, it would not be by constructing a huge machining research facility. It would be by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, cloud-based data analytics and digital twins. Product

In this episode, Jonathan Jay interviews Sam Turner, a former professional footballer turned dealmaker. Sam shares his journey from a successful corporate career to his decision to buy businesses. He explains how he found his first acquisition through networking and discusses the importance of credibility and clear focus in the acquisition process.  Sam emphasizes his philosophy of maintaining autonomous business units within a group and avoiding trying to oversimplify back-office synergies.  Key Highlights [00:44] Sam's background [04:34] What Sam did after the Zoom course [07:34] Factors to consider when deciding on the type of business to buy [09:14] The role of credibility in a business venture [12:14] How Sam undertook his first deal [14:00] How networking can aid in getting deals [15:20] Time frame between first contact with the business owner to owning it [18:40] How Sam got access to a lender [22:14] How too many changes can lead to a decline in the value of a business [24:05] Sam's plan for the future Notable Quotes In the beginning, when you haven't done this for the first time, there is a credibility piece that is helpful to have somebody. Whether there's that, there will be best practices and stuff, but I'm not going to, probably not at least at the beginning, or let's merge all the back offices together. We may end up going down that road, but it will be because of a discussion with each of the sort of balances and the business. The money is secondary to me, and I also have very clear plans of what I would do with that to help others. But I think there is a great opportunity you have to work out whether it's for you or it's not. And if it is, then go for it. In this episode, we continue the conversation with Sam Turner, a successful entrepreneur who shares his insights and experience on the acquisition process, from the very first day to the consolidation of the businesses. He talks about the importance of being consistent with your time and being present in your business to create a strong culture that aligns with your vision. He also shares his experiences transitioning from a large corporate to an SME - and how getting the business culture right is critical to business success. He also introduces the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and explains how it can be applied to optimize business operations.  Key Highlights [01:40] What happened on day 1 of the acquisition [02:55] Being consistent with the time [04:38] The benefit of being present in your business [07:33] The culture shock of moving from a big company to a small company [09:09] Importance of cultural aspect in a business [12:30] Importance of CFO and how Sam incorporated that in his business plan [15:47] The Entrepreneurial Operating System [19:36] Why Sam has not done the retained equity [20:26] How Sam is applying what he has learned from acquisitions [22:47] The classic case of funding the business [25:11] Sam's deal team [28:19] What makes you succeed in the long-term [30:12] Advice to people who are yet to make their first step Notable Quotes I don't think you can over-communicate. And I think communication is something that's really, really important. Being consistent with that and holding to what you're saying. If you want to grow the business, build on top of the good performance that I've had because it's a profitable business, has good brand equity, etc., is being open and honest. So I think the danger in deals is that the first deal is that you got the due diligence, your legal, your financial, and to a certain extent, your commercial due diligence. And you can get anal about every single point, you know. And you just need to know what matters and what doesn't matter. What makes you succeed or not in the medium term is how good your teams are in the businesses. You are what you do, so what you do consistently is who you are. So if you want to be somewhere, do it consistently. Resources Buying a business is only the start, which is why we are now teaching what happens next on the Mastermind program. Sam offers invaluable insights into the art of reaching out to companies and the deals he needs to undertake to reach his revenue goal.  Key Highlights [01:29] What led Sam to the world of business [07:09] Why Sam is not focused on integration [08:36] Why Sam decided to buy a business [11:08] How the decision on the sector to venture into came about [15:21] Rebranding, how Sam handles it [17:11] Where there is value from a branding perspective [19:01] Sam's thoughts on integrating back office [21:21] The annual group revenue and how it has grown [25:44] How to reach out to companies [28:26] Possibility of having deals out of the initial conversations [30:13] Deals that Sam needs to undertake to get to the 60 million revenue Notable Quotes If you've got a very, very similar value proposition for customers. A very similar business model, why wouldn't you look for the cost synergies as part of that? Brand equity, so to speak, is important that the reputation in the market Yes, is part of what you're buying. You're buying the people, the contracts, and the reputation. So I think it would be honestly crazy to try and think about a rebranding of that. When you're dealing with smaller businesses, they've got a legacy, a culture, and a reputation in the marketplace. You want to protect that and sort of enhance it rather than damage it.  Sometimes it's horses for courses. I think, as we said before, if you've got a cookie-cutter approach, then it makes sense to be o Resources Buying a business is only the start, which is why we are now teaching what happens next on the Mastermind program. Welcome to the last Business Buying Strategies episode of 2022.  This week we've picked out twelve highlights from the year - one for each month.   So in January, I talked with Richard Bundock, one of my dealmaking clients. Richard had started a successful business, but wasn't able to grow it organically as quickly as wanted to, so he turned to acquisitions instead.  In February, I met Sam Turner, who gave up a lucrative and successful corporate career to become a dealmaker in the heating and ventilation sector.  In March, I caught up with Nick Manuel, who graduated from my programme with the right attitude, determination and most importantly the right strategy to make successful acquisitions.  In April, we met Peter Lidgitt, who bought nine UK businesses in 2020, totalling £20m in revenue – all whilst being locked down for most of the year at his home in France.  In May, I talked with legendary jewellery entrepreneur Gerald Ratner who grew his global business almost entirely through acquisition.  In June, we met  John Richardson, whose expertise is in acquiring coffee retail businesses, and establishing a chain a coffee shops.  In July, I spoke with Graeme Carling, who spent a decade building a substantial property portfolio, before buying a well known Scottish construction company out of administration. In August, we met Aled Davies, who runs a printing and textile printing family business. Aled had been trying to grow this business organically - but having listened to this podcast, and joining me on the Fasttrack Program, has now made his first acquisition. In September, I was joined by Phil Hunt, one of my private clients. Although Phil has a full-time job as an HR director of a city bank in London, this hasn't stopped him from making his first two acquisitions. In October, Jo Bell joined us to talk about her first five business acquisitions and the lessons that she has learnt along the way.  In November, I met James Gardner, for whom a chance meeting led to the acquisition of a funeral care business, and has now become a group through acquisition.  Finally, earlier in December, I caught up with Andy Doyle, who joined my very first business acquisition mastermind program nearly five years ago, back in 2018. Five years on and he has made several acquisitions, and has ambitious plans for the years ahead.  If you would like to take the next step to learn the best ways of buying a business, without risking your own cash, you can access my free training at www.dealmakersvideo.co.uk and you can also request a free copy of my book athttps://www.thedealmakersacademy.com/free-book-giveaway/ If you want to jump straight to my live Zoom FastTrack course please go tohttps://www.thedealmakersacademy.com/fast  Resources If you are looking for a lawyer in the UK to help you get the deal over the line, then use my guy John Andrews. At 16 years old Olivia is setting the scene alight with her amazing vocals, fantastic songwriting and her massive personality. Olivia chats to us about the start of her career, how she got into music, some of her future plans and the meaning behind her lyrics. We are also lucky to have Olivia perform live a snippet of her latest track ‘I Love It' which is due out on February 9th. Definitely a name we are going to be hearing in the near future. Also we have brought back our spotlight for independent artists this week. Firstly, we have ‘Maddy McKenzie' who hails all the way from Canada. Maddy is making a name for herself in Canada and is sharply gaining fans from all across the world. We have the pleasure of playing her track ‘Do it Sober' which showcases her vocal abilities, definitely check out Maddy's other tracks and follow her on all social media platforms. We also have ‘Sam Turner and The Cactus Cats' who is our second independent artists to feature. With such an awesome and intriguing name these guys show us all their country credentials with their track ‘Lonesome For'. They hail from Texas and it most certainly shows in their music, which such an old school country vibe and something we believe is missing in today's seen these boys fill that void. I'm sure your going to love these guys as much as we do. Check out all their other tracks on other platforms and find out all about them on their social pages.

It takes a lot to get started in adult life - finding a flat, learning to budget, perhaps heading to university or a first job. Many new adults rely on their parents for help but more than 10 thousand young people a year leave the care system. In this edition of Money Box Live, Felicity Hannah, care leavers, a foster parent and a panel of experts discuss what support is on offer for young people leaving care. We hear from Callie, Mark, Chantel and Elias about their lives in care and how they have been treated by the system in relation to their financial entitlements. Joining them are Carrie Wilson Harrop, Young Persons consultant at The Care Leavers Association; Sam Turner, Policy and Participation Manager at BECOME, a national charity for children in care and young care leavers and Eilidh Malcolmson, a team leader who works with the continuing care and aftercare social work team for North West Glasgow. www.becomecharity.org.uk - helpline 0800 023 2033 or advice@becomecharity.org.uk www.careleavers.com Producer Smita Patel Editor Emma Rippon
