Mazda's numerically named hatchback might be a vestige of its former naming conventions, but it still echoes Mazda's modern direction. This fourth-generation Mazda 3 made its way to roadways for the 2019 model year, which, historically, puts it close to the end of the line. Despite not having a Mazdaspeed version for hopped-up hatchback enthusiasts to add to their respective stables, this fourth-gen Mazda 3 does pack plenty of power under the hood. The base-model Mazda 3's naturally aspirated 2.5-liter mill sends 191 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. That's not bad, of course, but Mazda also offers the Mazda 3 with the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that shoves 250 hp, on 93 octane fuel, and 310 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the turbocharged Mazda 3 hatchback and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the 2025 Mazda 3 before taking you on a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Patrick Carone about the Mazda 3's position in the marketplace, the competition, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2025 Mazda Mazda 3 special.

Le Mans, 1991. The Mazdaspeed team has been chasing gold at the legendary endurance race for the better part of a decade, and the team can only watch on anxiously as the clock ticks past midnight. With a looming ban on rotary engines, they know that the rotary-powered 787b is their last chance at victory. And for now, roughly every 3 and a half minutes, the nervous silence is broken as the distinctive 4-rotor engine screams with a ferocity down the pit straight. 00:00 - SHOW OPEN In a world where the average new car costs more than $48,000 and the average used car costs more than $27,000, an affordable price truly matters if you're looking for a something fun to drive on a budget. And the focus of today's podcast episode is on a car from Mazda that's a performance bargain today, because the average used car buyer likely doesn't remember that this car ever existed. 00:58 - Today's Focus: The 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege Sport SedanWhile today's episode will focus on the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege, it is also about being open to possibilities - like, the possibility that a less-known, but still really interesting and desirable vehicle, that could be perfect as your next used car, might pop up for sale at any moment on Craigslist, Facebook market place, Autotrader, or wherever you shop for used cars. You simply have to: A) know what to look for, and B) be open to the idea that this could happen. If you do that, the next time you search for a used car, you might be surprised by what you find. 04:35 - The 2001 Mazda Protege MP3 - The first performance ProtegeNow if you are a real Mazda nerd, you may remember that the Mazdaspeed Protégé isn't the first Protégé that got a performance upgrade. That distinction went to the 2001 Mazda Protégé MP3. Yes, there really was a car named after music audio file. 05:50 - Details and Performance of the Mazdaspeed ProtegeIn 2003, the Protégé's final year before being replaced by the Mazda3, Mazda decided to turn up the volume by releasing the turbocharged Mazdaspeed Protégé – the company's first Mazdaspeed-badged car. And in spite of being overshadowed by many other awesome sport compact offerings available at the time, such as Subaru's WRX, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the Neon SRT-4 from Dodge, the Mazdaspeed Protégé was still a stunning farewell performance for the Protégé sedan. 06:25 - Mazdaspeed Protege Upgrades From Callaway Cars, Inc., Racing Beat, Tokiko, Racing Hart Wheels, Sparco and Kenwood PerformanceSuspension & BrakesInterior UpgradesKenwood Audio SystemExterior UpgradesColors OfferedTotal Number Built11:20 - What To Look For In A Mazdaspeed ProtegeWhen looking for a special edition vehicle like this, you really want to find one that has been owned and well cared-for by an enthusiast. That's the best way to guarantee that it will still be a Mazdaspeed Protégé you want to own. Try To Find One With The Following Attributes: Low miles is good, but condition matters moreLook for an example with only one or two ownersShould have extensive maintenance recordsMake sure it as all it's original factory Mazdaspeed parts (Racing Hart wheels, side skits, rear wing, stereo, etc.) Still in its factory color 13:10 - Prices For The Mazdaspeed ProtegeKelly Blue Book values cars like the Mazdaspeed Protege lower than what they typically sell for on the open market, but there aren't many cars to choose from, so prices vary widely. That said, you might expect to pay $8,000 to $10,000 (or more) for one in excellent condition with lower miles and one or two owners. Of course, owners can ask what they want for their car, so you may find examples of the Mazdaspeed Protege with much higher asking prices. However, since there are many interesting and desirable sport compact cars from the early 2000s era, including the Subaru WRX, the Lancer Evo, the Dodge SRT-4 Neon, Honda's Civic Si, Ford's SVT Focus, etc.), having more interesting cars for buyers to choose from may help keep prices...

The Mazda Mazdaspeed3 is one of the coolest hatchbacks to roll out of a Mazda factory. It had all the attitude you'd want from a sporty hot hatch and more than enough power. Unfortunately, the Mazdaspeed banner is gone. Though, the good news is that Mazda's hatchbacks are still kicking. The latest generation Mazda 3 hatchback made its way to the streets in 2019 and has gone the last few years with few major changes. Though in 2021 the folks at Mazda dropped in the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine found in other Mazda products and turned its sensible hatchback into a sleeper hot hatch. The 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 has the same power as we've seen in its other products: 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers shrink when using non-premium fuel to a still peppy 227 and 310 lb-ft. Managing all that power is a six-speed automatic, which sends power to all four wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the Mazda 3 to put it through its paces. Wren walks around the 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo and highlights its styling and exterior features before climbing inside the car to show off its interior. Later, he takes you along for a real-time drive review. Adding to the show, Wren chats with west coast editor Mark Vaughn about Mazda's hatchback history, the Mazda 3 and the current hatchback climate. The two talk about the Mazda 3's dynamics before discussing what makes the 2022 Mazda 3 special.

00:00 - Time To Buy A First Generation NA Miata - Part 1This is part 1 of a 2-part series that explores why you should put an NA Miata on your bucket list. This small, fun, lightweight sports cars from Mazda was first introduced back in 1989 as a 1990 model and these first generation cars are now going up in price. Bargains can still be found though, so now's the time to act if you ever considered owning one. Mazda introduced the first Miata back on February 9, 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show and since then, more than one million Miatas have been sold, it's still in production today, and it's been named the best selling 2-seat convertible sports car of all time, so it's clear Mazda picked a winner. 01:25 - Four Generations Sold Since the Miata's Introduction in 1990 NA Miata - Model Years 1990 to 1997Original body style with pop-up headlights, reminiscent of a 1960s Lotus Elan. Split into two generations, the first was the NA6 from 1990-1993. These came with a 1.6-liter, DOHC 4-cylinder engine that made 116-horsepower and 110-lb.ft of torque. While they looked basically the same, the later NA8 cars from 1994-1997 had a bump in displacement to 1.8-liters and initially made 128-horsepower and 110-lb.ft. of torque. Power was later increased to 133-horsepower and 114-lb.ft. of torque in 1996. The initial 10% increase in horsepower was offset by a 4.5% increase in weight (about 100 lbs.) due to the addition of larger brakes, a passenger airbag and additional body bracing, both for increased side impact protection and handling. (There was NO 1998 Miata)NB Miata - Model Years 1999 to 2005The NB saw a major restyle of the exterior. Pop-up headlights were replaced with exposed headlights and other exterior refinements. The Engine's displacement remained the same at 1.8-liters, but now made 140-horsepower at launch, with a later bump to 142-horsepower in 2001. This generation of Miata also introduced the only MazdaSpeed version ever produced. It was available in 2004 and 2005 and featured a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine making 178-horsepower and 166-lb.ft. of torque. NC Miata - Model Years 2006 to 2015The NC Miata grew a bit in all dimensions. It was the heaviest generation of the Miata too, but to help offset that weight increase, it featured the highest horsepower of any normally aspirated Miata to date. The larger displacement 2.0-liter engine made 167-horsepower and 140-lb.ft. of torque. This was also the generation that saw the introduction of the PRHT or Power Retractable Hard Top in late 2006. This hard top retracted and folded in such a way that it did not interfere with trunk space. ND Miata - Model Years 2016 to PresentThe ND Miata is the fourth and current version of Mazda's 2-seat, rear drive convertible sports car. This generation saw a major re-emphasis on weight reduction, with overall weight inching closer to the first generation NA8 cars. The 2.0-liter engine size remained, but the engine's horsepower was set at 155 with 148-ft.lbs of torque. In spite of the horsepower reduction from the NC cars, he overall result was a lighter, faster ND Miata or MX-5 with improved fuel economy. And for 2019, the ND Miata saw a bump in power to 181-horsepower, along with an increase in torque to 151-lb.ft, making this the quickest Miata to date. 04:00 - Why consider getting an NA Miata now? These cars bottomed out on their depreciation curve a couple of years ago and continue to go up price. I talk about my past experience missing out on two specific cars (the Datsun 240Z and the BMW E30 M3) that I waited too long to buy before the prices went up dramatically. I didn't miss out on the early Miata though, and I suggest that you shouldn't miss your chance either. 07:05 - Dig...

Some people dismiss the Mazda MX-5 Miata as a hairdresser’s car. Others think it’s the answer to all automotive questions. Does the truth lie somewhere between these two extreme positions — or is one of them actually right? Derek just bought a heavily modified NA Miata with Öhlins dampers on it, and it’s great. Jason had a stock NA and it wasn’t. The boys can both agree that NB is meh, turbos have no place in Miatas so the MazdaSpeed is out, but where do they fall on NC, NC2, ND? Was ND1 terrible and ND2 fixed it? Also, should Jason kill Derek? Tune in to find out.==The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter. Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. Did adding a turbo to the Miata teach Mazda an important lesson about not messing with the MX-5 formula? After a week behind the wheel of a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata from Mazdas' classic collection, Benjamin certainly seems to think so. Sami, on the other hand, can't get enough of Benjamin's weird winter tales of driving the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van to the Alaskan Arctic Circle after he himself samples the new model in warmer climes. Before wrapping things up, Sami posits that the 2018 Honda Pilot is really just a fancier minivan - and is totally ok with that - and then the pair riff through Volvo's new 'languge' designed to help its autonomous bed-office-living-room cars communicate with mere human beings, as well as a BMW lightning round featuring the longest SUV name in automotive history.

Its episode 40 , and on the show I have a chance to chat with Dave Thomas from Stance is Everything. From random celebrations of DEHC kits for fox bodies being Canadian, to the truth about MazdaSpeed 3 torque steer, the definition of stance, what Stance is Everything..... IS and ISNT...... and great discussion about automotive photography. Dave is a wealth of automotive knowledge, Dave is also  the epitome of calm and collected, and his commitment to celebrating what automotive enthusiasm represents through his own very unique perspective, is what this love for cars is all about. I hope that some of Daves passion and love for cars rubs off on all of you listening, as I think we'll all be better for it.

If you’re into Subaru, GTR, BMW, or Mazdaspeed then no doubt you know all about Cobb Tuning. Or so you think! Did you know that Cobb Tuning’s first shop was a single bay in his father’s tire shop? In this episode Trey and I discuss the lesson’s learned over the years and we talk about making tough decisions. Trey says you need to create a plan for your business to force yourself to think things through. We talk about creating plans and how to hold people accountable. Trey says to FOCUS on your strengths, don’t try to be everything to everyone. And in this conversation, we put that into context for the shop owners out there.

PR guys sometimes get a bad rap, but Dean Case undoes all that ill will. In addition to being in charge of PR for Mazda Motorsports, Dean has the distinction of being a good friend and a cool guy. Maybe it's because he came to the PR game from the engineering side, or maybe it's just that he loves making great connections between people and companies with interesting stories to tell.
