On this episode of the Carmudgeon Show, we discuss hot-hatches and daily drivers with automotive journalist Sam Smith. Discussion centers around the Toyota GR Hot-Hatch Twins: Jason has driven both the GR Corolla and Yaris, Sam has driven only the Corolla, and Derek only the Yaris. Which is best: Corolla or Yaris? And is either as good as the 2023 Honda Civic Type R? And is the CTR, in turn, anywhere near as good as the original Integra Type R? Sam used to own an ITR. Unrelated, Jason used to own a W202 Mercedes C43 AMG, and Derek showed up to the studio in his new-to-him C43, which replaces his Mk7 VW GTI as his daily driver. Turns out that both Jason and Sam also have Mk7 Volkswagens (e-Golf and GTI, respectively), and so the boys discuss daily drivers. In fact, Jason and Derek realize they've owned so many cars in common — W201 190E 2.3-16, R129 Mercedes SL, to name a few — that Jason almost accuses him of being a copycat. Meanwhile, Sam educates us on the Neue Klasse BMW (and its differences relative to the 1602 and 2002-series coupes). 118 PS und 145 Nm klingen nicht gerade beeindruckend: Wenn die allerdings nur 950 Kilo bewegen müssen, wird es schon interessanter.
It seems we can't satisfy our insatiable appetite for large dual-cab pick-up truckswith Ford Australia confirming pricing for its large F-150 due in the third quarter.Joining the well-established RAM and newer Chevrolet Silverado pick-ups theFord F-150 range is now available to order and will feature two grades, XLT andLariat, both in short and long wheelbase, prices starting from $106,950 andrunning to $140,945 for the long-wheelbase Lariat. The F150's will be powered bya 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 with 298kW of power and a strong 678 Nm oftorque driving through a 10-speed automatic transmission. Like their competitorsthey will be fully imported from the U.S. and re-manufactured in Melbourne forright hand drive – the short wheelbase model measures 3683mm between frontand rear axles with a 1700 mm tray – braked towing capacity rated at up to 4.5tonnes. Driving the small Cupra Leon VZx five-door hatch today – the performanceflagship of the four model Leon range. With this relatively new Spanish brandbeing part of the Volkswagen Group the Leon VZx shares much with the potentGolf GTi and a bit more. The styling different and edgy and with the test car inmatte Petrol Blue Paint it exuded a somewhat sinister appearance. With potent2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, a 7-speed dual clutch automatic with manual shiftpaddles and four drive modes it doesn't disappoint in performance terms. A hothatch for the true believers but at $74,690 drive-away with options its expensiveby any measure. In sports mode its performance even more exhilarating, inCupra mode even animal like with suspension and steering sharpnessheightened and exhaust note elevated. Drivability as good as it gets with frontwheel drive grip benefiting from a limited slip differential while braking from theoptional Brembo brakes inspiring to say the least. The test car did suffer a glitchto its 10-inch infotainment screen which blacked out, meaning I couldn't access alot of features including climate control. Even when working its functionality wasfrustrating, reinforcing my criticism of the usability of many touch screens in carstoday. Warranty – five years, unlimited kilometre. They bumped up the horsepower, improved the handling, added larger diameter wheels and low profile tires, increased the braking capacity , upgraded the transmission, performed interior and exterior tweaks that made the car look better while also providing drivers with a more connected experience behind the wheel. The Mazda Mazdaspeed3 is one of the coolest hatchbacks to roll out of a Mazda factory. It had all the attitude you'd want from a sporty hot hatch and more than enough power. Unfortunately, the Mazdaspeed banner is gone. Though, the good news is that Mazda's hatchbacks are still kicking. The latest generation Mazda 3 hatchback made its way to the streets in 2019 and has gone the last few years with few major changes. Though in 2021 the folks at Mazda dropped in the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine found in other Mazda products and turned its sensible hatchback into a sleeper hot hatch. The 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 has the same power as we've seen in its other products: 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers shrink when using non-premium fuel to a still peppy 227 and 310 lb-ft. Managing all that power is a six-speed automatic, which sends power to all four wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the Mazda 3 to put it through its paces. Wren walks around the 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo and highlights its styling and exterior features before climbing inside the car to show off its interior. Later, he takes you along for a real-time drive review. Adding to the show, Wren chats with west coast editor Mark Vaughn about Mazda's hatchback history, the Mazda 3 and the current hatchback climate. The two talk about the Mazda 3's dynamics before discussing what makes the 2022 Mazda 3 special.

Back in the day, the term "hot hatch" was coined in reference to a growing sub segment of the passenger car market that featured performance-oriented hatchbacks - often straight from Europe - on American streets. Today, our truck and SUV crazy market continues to mark the demise of the traditional passenger car. However, Volkswagen has doubled down with the recent introduction of its latest generation of the original "hot hatch", the Golf GTI.
The team discuss three hot hatches that are not a Golf GTI for less than £5000. Miles is thinking of buying a diesel as the team question if there is still a future for the compression engine.
We talk all things Hot Hatch! Can the new GR Corolla be the Hot Hatch Hero we need? What is the definition of a Hot Hatch anyways? What does the Grindr nonfiction sound like? Is there hope for the Hot Hatch in an electrified future? Come hang out and find out!
