Visit https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCik2... to subscribe to the new channel. Now back to the last episode from ISSIMI. Who are Porsche's customers? Old white guys who drive 911s? Yes. Soccer moms who drive Macans and Cayennes? Absolutely. Airbus? Also yes. Harley-Davidson? You bet. Volvo? Definitely. Lada? You guessed it. From almost the beginning, Porsche has been a company that does engineering work for hire. It keep excess engineering capacity busy which helps keep the lights on too. It also has made for some interesting collaborations, some of which are well-known, others are thoroughly obscure. In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss a number of these, ranging from the well-known like the Mercedes-Benz 500E and Audi RS2, to “under what rock did you look to find this?” like Linde forklifts, Airbus airliner cockpits, or the Lada Samara, the replacement of the 1200 which has been immortalized in Russian dashcam videos. So next time you accuse Porsche of selling out, check and make sure that they haven't already designed a similar apparatus for someone else before, because chances are they probably have.Follow Us on Instagram:ISSIMI: https://www.instagram.com/issimiofficialDerek: https://www.instagram.com/dtamscottJason: https://www.instagram.com/jasoncamissaView Our Current Inventory:https://www.issimi.comSupport the show (http://www.issimi.com)

#ISSIMI #JasonCammmisa #DerekTamScott #CarmudgeonShowIt's car week! Or rather, it was car week when Jason and Derek recorded their first in-person Carmudgeon episode since before the pandemic. In this episode, they catch up on recent automotive happenings, as well as discussing Car Week and whether it's worth making the pilgrimage to attend. Jason shares his impressions of both Derek's Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce and the Ferrari 288 GTO that he drove, and Derek shares some observations about the future of market for collector and enthusiast cars, including which ones are likely to move in the future, and which ones whose best days may be behind them in terms of market interest. They discuss why a Jaguar D-Type is worth less than a McLaren F1 and this of course is logically followed by a discussion of BMW E30 vs 944 and then the VW ID4 because these two cannot stay on the same page for more than a few seconds. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. In the latest and thoroughly overdue episode of The Carmudgeon Show, the boys spend an hour or so discussing their latest video projects: Jason's just released Icons episode about the G80 M3 (which necessitates revisiting the E30 M3 and E46 M3 and of course the W201 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16), and Derek's upcoming BTS with DTS episodes about the Lexus LFA and NA1 Honda NSX-R. They also discuss the recent rally they attended, which was not without drama (one car flew off a cliff) and their preferred type of driving and how certain cars are and aren't suited to that. On that topic, Jason and Derek compare notes about the first generation NSX; Jason isn't a huge fan, while Derek described the NSX-R as one of the best drives he's ever had. In fact, Jason took a cashier's check to buy a US-market NSX and came home empty handed because he wasn't enthusiastic enough about how it drove. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. It’s no secret that neither Jason nor Derek love contemporary McLarens, despite them being objectively quite good. In this episode, they discuss the reasons why they feel this way, and also how modern McLarens are like a variety of foods including mirepoix, Mexican food, and turkey soup. Incidentally the exact opposite of these reasons is why they are both so enthusiastic about the McLaren F1 and the upcoming T.50. Naturally, this content is preceded by and interlaced with requisite tangents about 911s, e-Golfs, and Mark I Volkswagens. Also of note is Derek mentioning not one but two rear-engined Porsches that he *doesn’t* like. Automotive alliances and buy-outs are commonplace. Sometimes they go well: BMW did a great job of bringing back Mini in the early 2000s. Sometimes they go poorly: BMW did a terrible job with Rover during the same period. But BMW isn’t the only marque that’s done this, in fact most of the big players do: Ford with Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo, GM with Saab, Chrysler with Lamborghini, Fiat with Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Ferrari, Volkswagen with Lamborghini, Ducati, Bugatti, Bentley, the list goes on.In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss which marques are good parents, you know, the ones with happy, well-adjusted profitable and self-confident companylets, and which ones neglected, mismanaged, and otherwise stunted their charges with often tragic or fatal results. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. visit: www.issimi.comWhere is the geographic center of gravity of the automobile industry? And what is a geographic center of gravity anyway? In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss the idea that there’s a country at any given time that dominates the automotive industry, either in terms of technical innovation or marketplace impact. Jason suggests that it currently lies in Korea, and explains how Kia and Hyundai are breaking genuine ground, but also argues that there’s a shift happening back to America for the first time in many decades. But not to Detroit. The pair then explore the ways in which various countries have pushed the envelope of the automotive industry at various times, for example Japan with their sport compacts such as the Honda CRX and Prelude, Acura Integra, Nissan Sentra SE-R, and Nissan Pulsar, as well as the critical decision to design cars specifically for the American market, and build them here too such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. They also discuss the various cars which mobilized entire countries including the Ford Model T, Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 500, Citroen 2CV, and Mini.As far as America goes, the pair must return to the years before World War 2 to find genuine American technical innovation in the cars themselves, the Duesenberg Model J, for example, but the postwar market segmentation and marketing genius in America also receives honorable mention. Meanwhile, the pair asks whether and when countries like England, France, and Italy ever represented the center of the automotive universe and if so, when? And naturally, with this pair, a discussion of German cars is inevitable as well. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. visit: www.issimi.comJason and Derek start this episode by discussing their upcoming video projects, on the Renault R5 Turbo 2 and the 1973 Porsche Carrera RS respectively. Derek is gobsmacked by the driving experience of the RS and Jason reluctantly admits that the 911 is one of the best driver’s cars of all time, despite his outspoken distaste for their pervasiveness. He also sings the praises of the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder again, this time in the context of the sobering realization that the end of the internal combustion engine is on the horizon.California and the United Kingdom have both announced legislation to make the sale of internal combustion powered cars illegal starting in 2035, and Germany announced something similar for 2030 four years ago. The two discuss the benefits of and obvious drawbacks for enthusiasts of these upcoming laws, while Jason, who has been reading car magazines from the early 1980s, draws a parallel with the era when emissions and fuel economy standards changed the direction of cars forever 40 to 50 years ago, highlighting just how dire the “Malaise Era” was for enthusiasts. They also discuss how we managed to overcome that dark era, and how today’s darkness is offset by the exciting potential for electric cars, which are incredibly high performance and easier to maintain than today’s gasoline cars. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Jason and Derek took a road trip in a Corolla and the car wasn’t great. Then they took one in an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and it *was* great. Jason also installed a factory retrofit digital instrument cluster for his Lotus Elise, as well as a modification from 034Motorsport which allowed him to achieve 1.07g of lateral acceleration from...his e-Golf!?Derek responds to a listener’s question about the difference between the Mercedes 400E and 500E, which starts a discussion about gearing and how it can make or break a car. Jason always prefers shorter gearing except for in one car. He also offers his typical insight into why a lot of manufacturers purposefully employ long gearing today, particularly 3rd gear, to meet drive by noise regulations. Jason then laments the long gearing in the Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder before unceremoniously declaring it possibly the finest sports car of all time. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. The Carmudgeon Show is back! ...for now. And so too is the Nissan Z, and it’s a looker. But fear not, Jason and Derek are able to find things to complain about when it comes to the 400Z Proto. And speaking of complaining, they are less than enthusiastic about the heinous looks of the new G80 and G82 BMW M3 and M4.In the course of discussing updates, it emerges that Derek has bought his first EV, which launches a discussion about the Lucid Air, a spectacular, world-altering all-new EV which Jason describes as Tesla 2.0...and he seems to be genuinely excited about both the company and the car. He and Derek agree that the Porsche Taycan is a joke of a car compared to either the Lucid Air or the Tesla Model S.They also take the opportunity to discuss what’s next in terms of content: Jason is building a studio to use to make content for Hagerty, and Derek describes the mission of his new show, BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS, which is aimed at showcasing the old cars he loves to a new audience. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. It’s time we put you in charge of the subject matter — and we received hundreds of great questions. Many were remarkably intelligent, some were genuinely difficult to answer, and a few cracked us up. Either way, thanks to our awesome audience! This is the last episode for the first season of The Carmudgeon Show — and it’s the longest episode yet. Jason and Derek set their timer for 90 minutes and answered all of the audience questions they could — and only got halfway through their list. One question was perhaps the most difficult to ask: Derek asks Jason to admit a secret he’s been harboring: what happens after summer break? You’ll have to listen to find out.The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. In this episode of the Carmudgeon show, Derek and Jason discuss fast cars. Or, more precisely, they complain about fast cars. Speed limits haven’t changed, so as cars get faster and faster, it just means we get to enjoy them less. Derek recently drove a Ferrari 488 Pista, the first Ferrari Jason thought was too fast. And yet Car and Driver Magazine just tested a BMW M8 that would crush the Pista in a drag race. The M8 Competition is a luxury barge that hits 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Why would you want anything pleasurable to be over in two and a half seconds? The conversation meanders over to the Autobahn, which is where fast cars are their element — until they hit their nearly-universal speed limiters. Where’s the fun in that? At least the likelihood of being driven flat-out resulted in German cars’ technological superiority over most other cars. Like, say, American rental cars. Prodded by Derek, who knows far too many of Jason’s teenage-year demons, the conversation digresses into storytelling about the Pontiac Endurance Test, an under-warranty Chevrolet Cavalier that lasted 3 mere hours with a German at its helm before blowing its engine, and the Tale of Two Neons: a chronicle of chronic rental-car abuse. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. In this episode, Derek and Jason peer into the crystal ball to concoct the recipe for the perfect collectible car. What it comes down to is a number of factors; a checklist of characteristics. Did the car represent an end of an era? Or if it was replaced, was its replacement fundamentally different in a bad way? How many units were made — only two cars to ever hit the million-dollar price tag were produced in greater than 1000 units — the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and the Ferrari F40. Don’t forget attrition: some cars were made in large numbers but typically destroyed by rust, abuse, neglect, or just use. Or lift-off oversteer.Cars that are aberrations in their product lines (like the original GTI or the Mercedes Black Series cars) tend to do well. We can’t, of course, forget intrinsic desirability, nostalgia, and cars that represent the ultimate expression of their era: 1959 Cadillac’s fins, Aston Lagonda’s wedge styling. Don’t underestimate the cyclical nature of fashion: at one time, the Lamborghini Countach was seen as the car you buy if you can’t afford a new Lambo.Four-door cars have historically underperformed, but the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II shows a sea change. Perhaps that’s because, for the first time, many of the most desirable cars of the last 40 years were saloons: Lotus Carlton, BMW M5, etc. Provenance of the marque plays a role — but it’s not a guarantee (hello, Ferrari 308 GT4), but speed and experience almost always win. Speed alone isn’t enough, because as cars get faster and faster, the experience is what becomes dominant. The same go for looks: great looks are necessary for collectibility but certainly not sufficient. At the end of the day, Derek always counsels his clients to drive what makes them happy. Then, even if the car’s value doesn’t skyrocket, the ownership experience alone is enough to make it all worthwhile. What an out-of-character optimistic view from a true curmudgeon. We’ll make sure Derek is far less happy next week.=The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. This week, Derek and Jason discuss every generation of the Chevrolet Corvette while ogling beautiful sculpts made by Amalgam Collection. Derek explains that the C1 Corvette, in all of its various bodies, was perhaps better to look at than to drive, with a solid rear axle and (in early versions) a truckish straight-six engine. Jason hasn’t driven one, but feels like the Corvette recipe wasn’t fully baked until the C2 Corvette, which has perhaps the best-feeling manual-transmission shifter in history. The C3 has amazing door handles and voluptuous Ferrari-esque fenders; the C4 was 1980s angularly stunning, and introduced the ZR-1, the Corvette From Hell, with its 4-cam, Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 32-valve V-8. The C5 resurrected the Z06 option code from the 1960s, and the C6 was genuinely great to drive at the limit. Especially in outrageous ZR1 form, which used a supercharged V8 whose scream was only matched by those of the passenger. It all came together with the C7, the first Corvette to be competitive on a world stage in all ways, including its interior. Still not a match for the more-expensive European stuff, it was a pleasure to drive in its distinctly American way: gruff, rough, heavy-handed and very, very fun.The C8’s departure goes way deeper than its switch to a mid-engine layout. All of its controls are light and delicate, and its dual-clutch automatic transmission so smooth and deliberate that it feels synthetic. Just like the sound of its small-block engine, which is now artificiially piped through the stereo speakers. Jason insists the Chevy Small Block is the best-sounding V-8 in the world and Derek doesn’t seem to disagree. But the C8’s understeer is enough to make him think twice before recommending it, even though we know forthcoming Corvette C8 hybrids will have torque-vectoring electric all-wheel-drive. And last but not least, the boys discuss model cars: is it better to have literal models that match the real-world thing, or artistic interpretations? One works better in a garage or man-cave, the other is perhaps more appropriate on a coffee table. At least in houses where a significant other’s non-automotive taste needs to be considered. This episode of The Carmudgeon Show was Supported by Amalgam Collection. This episode is all about leasing — or in other words, spending on depreciation versus investing in a car. There’s a certain cost of transportation that you just can’t beat, calculating Total Cost of Ownership. Paying more than that for something special (for example, a magnificent Alfa Romeo Giulia) can be worth it, but when you look at the upcharge for the QV, the cost is staggering. The explanation is a combination of the car’s depreciation, but also more likely manufacturer-sponsored lease incentives, which can hugely benefit the lease customer. So when should you lease? When should you buy? And when should you buy used?In this episode, Carmudgeons Derek and Jason discuss different ways of looking at investing your money in cars — and why a calculated, expected loss is absolutely fine. This week, we ask the million-dollar question: when is it okay to modify your collector car? Or must you keep it stock at all costs?Turns out, it depends — if your car is a “reference grade” collectible car, its value will be in its originality and correctness. But Derek and Jason discuss many times when it may be okay to modify: when it addresses a fundamental flaw in the car, when the mods are done well, and when the car still functions as designed. Then there are the cases where someone has changed the fundamental way the car feels or drives, or if the changes aren’t easily reversible. Or if you ever put a turbo on your car (with one notable Hyphen-approved exception.)The boys agree on one thing: the best modified cars are those that retain their original character, just turned up to 10. The official "ISSIMI" t-shirts are here! https://teespring.com/stores/issimi-shopLike a magnificent grand piano that needs to be tuned, you can drive a vintage car that drives nothing like it should. How, where, and who maintains a car can influence how it drives, even more than any inherent goodness or badness from the factory. There is some variation between cars when new, but it’s minimal — the big difference comes from how they’re treated by their owners. And, perhaps more important, the competence level of the mechanic works on them. Derek postulates that one-owner cars are often some of the best, because that person paid full new price for the car and treats it as such; subsequent owners who purchased at a discount might treat it as a cheap used car. The flip-side is that some problems crop up gradually, so the owner might not notice. Both Carmudgeons have driven good and bad examples of many cars — from W124 Mercedes to Ferrari 308 GT4s. And the variation between them is huge. This is another reason why Jason doesn’t want anyone to drive his Scirocco: maybe they’ll realize it’s not perfect. Because no old car is.But of course his Scirocco is close. ;)=The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. How much ground clearance do you need in an apocalypse vehicle? After all, running over zombies might damage the cooling system on your venerable Mercedes W123—which otherwise will be the official car of the cockroach, long after all other life forms on Earth have ended.Surely we all know (except Derek) that Zombie Apocalypse vehicles need to be diesels, lest the zombies deactivate your spark-ignition system with their ray-guns. So that leaves out the Land Rover Defender gasoline versions, though those would just break down anyway. What about a Toyota Land Cruiser? Mercedes G-Class? Suzuki Samuai? Jeep Wrangler? Or the coolest apocalypse vehicle, the Lamborghini LM002.This week’s episode is all about the prospect of a get-out-of-harm’s-way vehicle. Your taste in cars says a lot about you. We collect, covet, and drive different cars for many different reasons, but we see all kinds of different themes in people’s tastes. Some people are one-marque wonders; others chase a great driving experience or even a colorful palette in their garage. Perhaps what makes car-shows like Radwood so incredible is that they’re brand-agnostic celebrations that bring together car enthusiasts who would otherwise not meet one another. Where else would you find someone with a mint-condition Chevy Lumina with its original sales documents laminated and on display?Derek went to Stanford to study why people like cars, but has car-ADHD in his own tastes. Or is it that he likes a variety of different experiences? Cars, after all, are a reflection of where they’re created — in geography and culture. It’s easy to get stuck with one marque, because the barriers to expand can be daunting: you’ll need new expertise, new friends, new parts-suppliers, a new mechanic, or even new tools. But does that mean someone who drives a Datsun 240Z can’t be interested in a 1977 Rolls-Royce? Nope. And she should buy it — It means she’ll make new friends and form a new support-group. Making new relationships and joining a new network means that she can pass on the joy of vintage British car ownership to others. And spreading joy — not viruses — is the meaning of life. There is perhaps no more iconic 1980s supercar than the Ferrari Testarossa. But the Testarossa has a big secret: it’s not a supercar. Oh, it has the performance in spades — but it’s actually a civilized grand tourer in personality. That’s what surprises nearly everyone who drives one for the first time. It’s comfortable. Exceedingly quiet. It rides well. Other than unassisted steering and being wider than a full-size pickup truck, the Testarossa is an easy car to drive. Once it’s warmed up, that is.On this week’s episode, Derek and Jason discuss all things Testarossa - from its crankiness when cold to its beginnings as a 365 BB and 512BB and its ending as a 512TR and 512M. BB has never stood for Berlinetta Boxer — how could it, when the Testarossa’s red-headed flat-12 isn’t a “boxer” engine? (It’s a flat-12, a horizontally opposed 12, or a 180-degree V-12, but not a Boxer, because opposing pistons share crankpins.) Also, they discuss whether its BB name stands for Berlinetta Bialbero (twin-cam coupe, which would be weird because Ferrari already had a DOHC version of its V-12) or whether it was actually named after Brigitte Bardot. Then, there are the Monospecchio cars with center-lock wheels versus the later cars with two mirrors and five-lug wheels. And then there are the inevitable comparisons to the Lamborghinis - the Miura and Countach, as well as the BMW E31 8-series and the front-engine Ferrari GTs and sports cars, including the Daytona. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. The Bugatti Veyron went into production 15 years ago, which means it’s now old enough to be considered a classic car in some places. Derek and Jason take a minute to discuss what was the fastest car in the world, the most expensive car in the world, and surely one of the most momentous automotive engineering projects in recent history. Fresh off the heels off of the first episode of ISSIMI’s new “Spotlight” show, where Jason features the Veyron Super Sport 300 — the last-ever Veyron coupe produced — the boys discuss the two different generations of Veyron (the first, 1001-hp car was available in coupe “EB 16.4” and convertible “Grand Sport” form — the second, 1200-hp Veyron was also available as a coupe (“Super Sport”) and convertible (“Grand Sport Vitesse.”)They reveal insider stories like the differences between Burmester and Puccini stereos in the cars, and what it’s like to drive vintage Bugattis (like Peter Mullin’s 1933 Type 51 that Jason drove on a Bugatti rally.) But really, this is just a discussion looking back at the Veyron’s incredible accomplishments.==The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. Unless you just don’t care about anything, it’s wise to have a pre-purchase inspection, or PPI, on any car you’re purchasing. And not just by a random friend who can kick the tires for you, but by a marque expert. That’s especially important because more important than noting overall condition is finding things that aren’t “correct.”Using the incorrect hose clamp isn’t a problem. Nor is the wrong bolt here or there. But recognizing those items’ incorrectness means that a mechanic has needed to touch that area, and that he either didn’t know which proper parts to use, or didn’t care. Anytime you see something incorrect, it points to something that should be investigated further. Most of the time, it’s meaningless; occasionally it can be evidence of something disastrous. Both Jason and Derek have experience with Alfa Romeos that had been cut in half — and only noticed the evidence of welding once the car was in the air. And both of them have bought cars unseen - from Derek’s Daimler Double-Six to Jason’s $300 Isuzu P’Up.In this episode, they exchange war stories of buying cars with and without PPIs. And why sometimes it’s necessary to show up with a baseball bat. Hey, pretending you’re crazy is a perfectly valid negotiation tactic. If you’re from Brooklyn. And stupid. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. You know the adage: you should never meet your heroes. Here’s the thing: Derek and Jason have. And it’s worth trying. Each of the boys came up with a list of cars that met their expectations — and a list of cars that didn’t live up to the hype. Here’s the thing: the lists were about the same length. So chances are somewhere around 50/50 that your hero will live up to its reputation. (If you’re a grouchy carmudgeon.)In this episode we talk about the BMW E30 M3 and 325i, the BMW E9 3.0 CSL, 1973 Porsche Carrera RS, the 911 SC, 911 Carrera 3.2, the 993-chassis 911, the E36 M3, Ferrari 330 GTC and 330 GTS, Ferrari 275 GTB, 250 Lusso, 330 GTC, 250 California, 308 GTB / 308 GTS, Ferrari 360, F430, F355, 328, 348, Ferrari 308 GT4 Dino, Mondial, Porsche 959, Ferrari F40, Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche 930 Turbo, Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer, 1939 BMW 328, Jaguar XK120, Jaguar SS100, BMW 850i E31, Nissan Fairlady Z432, Datsun 240Z, Toyota 2000GT, Mazda Cosmo, Honda S600 and S800, Nissan Skyline GT-R Hakosuka, Datsun 2000 Roadster, Lamborghini Miura, first-gen Acura NSX, 2006 Aston V8 Vantage 4.3, Alfa 105 cars including the GTV 1600, GTV 1750, GTV 2000, Giulia GT, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Corvette C2 Stingray, AC Cobra, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, Porsche 356, BMW Z8, Lotus Elise, Bentley R-Type Continental, and of course the hot-hatches: Volkswagen GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI. To appreciate all cars, you have to have experienced many. If it supposedly takes 10,000 hours of doing something to become an expert, can you fast-forward through that time by asking an expert like Jason or Derek?Cars are irrational and personal choices, so what’s right for one person may be completely wrong for another, even if those people have the same needs. It’s not only because your car is your avatar, but it’s also because your perspective changes as you’ve experienced different cars. The Porsche 911 is, the boys agree, probably the best overall daily-driven supercar. So you should probably own a 911. But once you do, it opens up the doors to owning lesser, more flawed — and charming — cars. If you stick to one marque or model, how can you ever know that it’s any good? Or bad?Perhaps what’s clearest here is an argument by car-hoarders explaining to other people why it’s important to own multiple cars. Perspective is everything. =The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Quarantine and lockdown can’t stop the boys from being Carmudgeons, so nothing has really changed, except that Derek and Jason recorded this episode while in different counties. This episode, recorded at what is likely to be just the start of the Coronavirus’ global impact, discusses the likelihood that the pandemic does nothing but accelerate the changes we’ve already begun to see in the automotive world. What will happen to car values? Will blue-chip collector cars underperform relative to cars that can be driven? What about auto auctions? Or car magazines? Or even the car companies themselves? And, Jason wants to know, will the pandemic help reinforce our appreciation for fact-based journalism instead of social-media influencers fighting over $400,000 watches given to them?We can’t know for sure, but these two Carmudgeons certainly have their opinions. And one thing’s for sure: no global pandemic is going to change their love for cars. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. It sounds daunting, but buying a car abroad is not difficult. Long before they even knew each other, both Jason and Derek had each turned a summer European vacation into a car-buying extravaganza. Importing a 25-year-old car into the U.S. isn’t difficult at all, and duty isn’t expensive.[NOTE: This episode was recorded in early March 2020 before the Coronavirus Social Distancing measures went into effect. We're glad to help stave off boredom while you #ShelterInPlace — anything to keep you home and keep you safe. Stay well, all of you. Love and distant kisses from all of us at ISSIMI.]In discussing what cars are on their personal To Buy lists, Derek and Jason realized that most of the cars they want were never sold in the U.S. — things like the Honda Beat, Autozam AZ-1, Suzuki Cappuccino, Daihatsu Copen, and other Japanese-market Kei Cars. On the opposite end of the spectrum are Derek’s Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 and Range Rover 2-door fetishes — and where the boys’ tastes overlap: at the Lotus Carlton. Built as a special-edition Opel / Vauxhall Omega, the Carlton was a 177-mph family sedan that infuriated everyone at the time for being socially unconscionable. But with a turbocharged straight-six, rear-wheel drive, and a manual transmission, it’s right up the Radwood-era enthusiast’s alley. The first-generation Honda Insight isn’t, even though Jason wants one. He also wants an original Honda S600 or S800 — but not an S2000. You’ll have to watch to find out why (hint: steering and gearing.) And you’ll hear the outrageous story of the R107 380SL Jason shipped to his dad, which got destroyed by the DEA at the port, thinking it was filled with drugs. So even though shipping a car across the globe is relatively inexpensive, it’s not without its risks. Having a transaxle is one of the most reliable signs that a car is cool. At least that’s the theory — and we’re not talking about front-wheel-drive cars here. In this episode, Derek and Jason discuss front-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars that have their transmission mounted in back. There are only a handful of transaxle sedans ever made, and they’re all cool. There are only slightly more sports cars engineered with this layout. Why? There are benefits (weight distribution) but drawbacks (packaging). Allegedly overcaffeinated, Jason pulls out Wikipedia’s list of every transaxle car ever made, and then goes on a rant about hating the Porsche 928. Which just allows Derek to go on a rant about how great Lancia was. Only a Carmudgeon could go on a rant about something positive. But the boys cover them all: the Porsche 924, 944, 968, and 928; Lancia Flaminia, Aston Martin Rapide, Lancia Aurelia, Nissan GT-R, De Deion Bouton, Stutz Bearcat, Bugatti Type 46, Skoda Popular, Pegaso Z102, DAF 600, Pontiac Tempest, Ferrari 275, Ferrari 400, Ferrari 365 GTC/4, Ferrari 330 2+2, Volvo 300-series, Alfa Romeo Alfetta, GTV6, Milano, 75, SZ, and RZ, Panoz Esperante, Plymouth Prowler, Shelby Series 1, Maserati Coupe and Spyder, Alfa Romeo 8C, and of course the Lexus LF-A. There aren’t many, but there are some SUVs that Derek and Jason love. And they have one thing in common: authenticity. They’re all trucks in the traditional sense — Land Rover Defender, Range Rover Classic, Lamborghini LM002, Mercedes G-Class, Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Tracker, and of course the TJ Jeep Wrangler. We also discuss how we know the Ferrari Purosangue (which means “pureblood” in Italian) is the exact opposite of its name, even without having seen it; why the Lamborghini Anus (Urus) is insulting on the face of it, and why Derek didn’t love his Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, even though it did everything well. Derek finally drove two modern sedans, the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Performance. They both blew his mind, but he only wants one for himself. That said, he thinks everyone else should buy the other. In this episode, Jason and Derek stumble across an idea of how to save Alfa Romeo in the U.S. — and why Tesla Model 3 has proven so popular. The basic idea: the rest of the supposed “sports sedans” have gotten so homogenous and boring that there's no reason to buy them. Also, Jason thinks California is a decade ahead of the rest of the country, and in related news, he likes the smell of his own farts. Badges, emblems, signs, and stickers: this week’s Carmudgeon show is all about why so many cars have badges for seemingly irrelevant things. Trim-level badging apparently helps with resale values, but why is it necessary to tell the cars behind you that you have Tuned Port Injection?Jason and Derek take an illustrated trip down memory lane, discussing the coolest (and silliest) badges ever put on cars. Derek and Jason postulate that Alfa Romeo invented the sport sedan at about the same time that BMW was making things like the Isetta bubble-car. This episode is an information-packed, hour-long discussion about the origin of the sports sedan — and what that term even means. There’s a difference between a sedan that’s fast in a straight line (Mercedes 6.3, 6.9, Maserati Quattroporte I) and a sedan that handles like a sports car (Alfa Giulietta). Giulietta really started the trend — even though sporting Jaguars like the Mk1 and Mk2 were already being regularly raced. But Alfa continued with the Giulia Super before BMW stumbled on the 2002 by accident — though it was a two-door sedan. But then BMW started to perfect the recipe with the E12 M535i - where it put its biggest engine in a sporty sedan, and then cemented success with the E28 M5. So while Alfa Romeo invented the sport sedan with the Giulietta, BMW perfected it with the M5.Today, every serious car company makes a sporty variant of its cars, but only some really qualify as sport sedans: the Maserati Quattroporte V, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Aston Martin Rapide, the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16, the BMW M3 and M5. The Cadillac CTS-V was a true sport sedan, albeit 50 years late to the party, as was the Chevrolet SS, the true successor to the E39 M5, which is perhaps the best sports sedan of all time. Has Japan ever made a true sports sedan? Nissan thought so with the Maxima 4DSC, but Lexus made a true contender with the IS300 and with today’s ISF and GSF. Infiniti nailed the second-generation M45. VW’s had the Jetta GLI since the original Mk1. But the sport sedan that both Carmudgeons lust after is the Opel / Vauxhall Lotus Carlton. ==The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. In the 1970s and 1980s, the hottest cars had turbochargers: things like the BMW 2002 Turbo, Saab 99 and 900 Turbo, and the 930 Porsche 911 Turbo were the pioneers. Then, supercars like the Ferrari 288 GTO and F40 changed our perception of what “fast” really meant. But today, it’s the cars without the turbos that stand out — among others, the Porsche 911 GT3, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the Lamborghini Huracan and Aventador. Today, na is the new turbo. What happened? In this episode, Jason and Derek are all about the turbos — talking of their personal experience with turbocharged cars, from Derek’s 1991 Audi 200 Avant 20V Turbo Quattro to Jason’s childhood Saab 900 Turbo. They discuss how a turbocharger works, why it’s superior in some ways — and inferior in others. They also use the word stoichiometric. And of course, discuss the origins of the Turbocharger — World War 2 planes, because Derek was there — and how military aircraft technology trickled down into consumer automobiles, first in the Oldsmobile Jetfire and Chevrolet Corvair Monza Turbo. 1980s turbos are appealing because of their on/off boost nature, but the lag was as frustrating as it was exhilarating. And without sufficient computer-controlled engine management, many of that era’s turbo engines grenaded. Hello, Lancia Delta Integrale — one of our favorite turbocharged cars, but one that’s prone to engine failure. Is the turbo worth it? Jason says no. Derek says sometimes. But even he admits he hated his 930-chassis 911 Turbo. This makes Jason smile because he thinks turbos should be reserved for diesels and daily drivers. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. In this episode, Jason and Derek contemplate a recent BringATrailer auction where a 1971 Datsun 240Z sold for $315,000 ($310,000 plus fees.)It’s a well-known thing in the collector car world that rarity is often a multiplier for any inherently desirable car’s value. It’s simple supply and demand. It follows, then, that cars produced in extremely limited numbers, like the Toyota 2000GT, would be expensive, but mass-produced common cars like the Datsun 240Z wouldn’t. Except for one factor; cars that were once common and cheap often suffer from high attrition rates; and when they reach collectible age, nostalgia puts a big price premium. In the case of this 240Z, Derek Tam-Scott postulates that the difference between this car’s rational value (at max, $150,000) and its actual sale price (double that) is due to that effect.Additionally, as Hagerty pointed out in a recent meeting, Japanese cars were largely ignored by Baby Boomers, and as Gen X and Millennials gradually begin to drive collector-car prices, Japanese cars are poised to do well. Jason Cammisa agrees, and adds that cars prevalent in video games (like the Cosworth Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II and Nissan Skyline) will experience huge values because of their presence there. The boys also discuss cars similar to the 240Z, such as the Nissan Fairlady Z432, a Japanese-market Z with the Prince S20 racing engine from the original Hakosuka Skyline GT-R, the Jaguar E-Type and its Lightweight variants. And Jason recounts a recent story of his Scirocco 16V gathering attention on the streets because it once was such a common shape but disappeared so slowly that people don’t realize the hole in the heart — until they see one and the flood of memories come back. Long story short: despite this unexpected auction result, a car’s value is still related to rarity. But we can add “scarcity” to that for cars that were once common but are now rare. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Jason Cammisa owns his cars just because of how they drive — and yet it occurred to him that several of his cars were designed by some of the most celebrated automotive designers of our time. Derek Tam-Scott does, too — and what follows is a conversation on how some designers have a signature (like Marcello Gandini’s bizarre shapes born out of packaging concerns) and others don’t (Giorgetto Giugiaro’s designs, which often share nothing between them other than being beautiful.) And then there’s Bruno Sacco, the father of a generation of Mercedes designs (including the W126, W201, W124, and R129) that are timeless and elegant beyond perhaps any other. There’s also discussion of the Delorean (it’s rear-engined, not mid-engined!), the Rover SD1, and how some designs just get copied: the Ferrari 308 GT4 and Lamborghini Uracco are the same basic design; the DeLorean, the Volkswagen Scirocco, the Audi Coupe and the Isuzu Piazza / Impulse are, too; ditto. the VW Golf and Lancia Delta — and of course we can’t forget the Jaguar Pirana, which became the Lamborghini Espada or the Peugeot 405 and Infiniti G20. BMW had its designers, too, including Paul Bracq and Claus Luthe. And today’s Volkswagen design language by Walter Da Silva. Jason thinks Italian designers are at their best when they’re working for Germans — who restrain them. Superfluous design elements age poorly, and keeping it simple helps cars age well.Does it matter who designed a car? Probably not — but a great-looking car can make Derek Tam-Scott buy it just because it’s beautiful. It’s why he had an Alfa Romeo 164 and a Daimler Double-Six (Jaguar Series 3.) Jason would have a Maserati Quattroporte V because of it — but admittedly that drives beautifully (and Derek would have a QP1 and a QP3, too.) We’ve just spent the week in Scottsdale, Arizona for the annual collector-car auction spectacular, visiting the auctions put on by Gooding & Company, Bonhams, Barrett-Jackson, Russo and Steele, RM Southebys, and Leake. In this special episode of the Carmudgeon Show, filmed on location in Scottsdale, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss why these auctions are important even to car nerds who aren’t big-dollar collectors. Now that the Radwood-era cars are finally getting recognition (how about a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II selling for $434,000?), are we witnessing a generational shift in the auctions? After all, a Mercedes 6.3 sold for less than a tenth as much. And are the “blue-chip” mega-expensive investment-grade cars like the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing in trouble when things like a GMC Typhoon show up at auction? Why are the special double-washers that hold the seats into a Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS just as important as the yellow-stitched seatbelts? We get a look into Hyphen’s massive encyclopedic knowledge on this episode as we take a closer look at a bunch of cool cars, rough cars, beautiful cars, and very expensive cars. But when less than 5% of collector cars are traded in public, live auctions, what do these sale prices really mean? And what do they really mean for the rest of us?The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. This week, we get to know the real Derek Tam-Hyphen-Scott, as he teaches us how he deals with oblivious drivers who pace each other in the left lane. Of course, he blames that bad behavior on Jason Cammisa. There are lots of opinions in this one — California drivers are bad, but it’s the Pacific Northwest that takes the crown for the worst drivers in America. Or perhaps the world, since Derek and Jason seem to agree that American drivers have some of the worst lane-discipline on Earth. Europe, it seems, is nirvana for driving — where the whole world is your passing zone and lane-discipline is exemplary. This was especially of Germany’s Autobahns back in the day, but the boys still love it there. (At least until these two curmudgeons start whining about European drivers. Or underpowered diesel hatchbacks. Or… France.)Jason Cammisa admits to hitting an old woman with his electric car — loud pipes save lives! — something Derek Tam-Scott doesn’t have to worry about with his deafening motorcycle. But lane-splitting, which is legal here, brings out the worst in already inattentive, passive-aggressive California drivers. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Why, as enthusiasts, do we love wagons so much? Jason and Derek discuss why they love wagons in general and their wagons (BMW E30 325i Touring, Audi C3 200 20v Avant, Mercedes S211 E500 4Matic) specifically. But Americans hate wagons, or so the manufacturers say when everyone asks them why they don’t bring wagons to America. However, Jason points out that the product planners often get it wrong when they bring wagons here, choosing to bring configurations that buyers don’t want at volumes so low and prices so high that even the most rabid wagon enthusiasts choose an SUV alternative instead. With the new Audi RS6 finally coming to America with considerable (and well-deserved) fanfare, could there be a resurgence in wagon interest in increasingly mainstream car people, or will it end up with Audi shaking their heads at disappointing sales and telling Americans “this is why you can’t have nice things”? Could non-car people who grew up in SUVs ever drive a backlash against the omnipresent crossover/CUV/SUV scourge, particularly as the superior aerodynamics of the wagon form factor make it more appealing for electric cars because of the relationship between aerodynamics and range? The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. “Ford versus Ferrari” is a great film that got most of the important details right, but it’s not a documentary. And some of the cool stories about the street cars didn’t make the cut. In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss some cool history about the original Shelby cars, including the homologation-special Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 — and how it really only lasted one year before Shelby realized that people said they wanted a race car for the street, but didn’t. And then, of course, there’s the big-block, Police Interceptor GT500, which was a muscle car in the true sense. Meaning, of course, that it wasn’t meant for corners. How does that compare with the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 — a car that bears the same legendary name. When the W198 generation Mercedes 300SL road car came out in 1954, it was the McLaren F1 of its day. A no-compromises, high-tech, and exotic car that went faster than any other roadgoing car, it was decades ahead of its time.We discuss subsequent generations of the SL including the W113 or Pagoda (230SL, 250SL and 280SL), R107 (350SL, 280SL 450SL, 380SL, 300SL 420SL, 560SL), R129 (300SL, 500SL, 600SL, SL280, SL320, SL500, SL600), R230 (SL500, SL600, SL550, SL55, SL63, SL65), and R231 and how they developed into grand tourers that were neither Sport nor Light as the original name implies. Ultimately, we conclude that the SLR McLaren (C199, R199), SLS (197, R197), and AMG GT (C190, R190) are much closer to the original spirit of the SL.The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. That’s the question Derek Tam-Scott asks on this week’s episode of the Carmudgeon Show. Jason has owned his 1987 VW Scirocco 16V since 1997 — and has had plenty of other Mk1 Volkswagens, including a Cabriolet — that have out-ranked, out-fun, and out-lasted the Porsches, Ferraris, Lotuses, BMWs, Miatas, and Cosworth-Mercedes in his collection. Jason drives the fastest, best, and most expensive cars in the world — but hasn’t found anything to knock the Scirocco off its pedestal. Except possibly the Cabby. The A1-chassis VW is the giggle-factory pinnacle of fun, he says, telling the story of how this VW keeps him in love with it, why he’s built nearly ten engines for it, and how buying it was a con-job accident in the first place. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Everyone has a bad day, and the same goes for car companies. The late 1990s and early 2000s were a really bad time for Mercedes-Benz, and they’ve recovered just fine. Do we think the same will happen to BMW?Or is the Bavarian company beyond repair? We thought VW was once beyond repair, but they’ve proved us wrong before. And Maserati has been having a bad day for the last 40 years.Let’s discuss. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Some people dismiss the Mazda MX-5 Miata as a hairdresser’s car. Others think it’s the answer to all automotive questions. Does the truth lie somewhere between these two extreme positions — or is one of them actually right? Derek just bought a heavily modified NA Miata with Öhlins dampers on it, and it’s great. Jason had a stock NA and it wasn’t. The boys can both agree that NB is meh, turbos have no place in Miatas so the MazdaSpeed is out, but where do they fall on NC, NC2, ND? Was ND1 terrible and ND2 fixed it? Also, should Jason kill Derek? Tune in to find out.==The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Every classic-car event is overrun with air-cooled Porsche 911s. There are reasons why — the 911 is great to drive, robust, and reliable — but should misery be part of the old-car ownership experience? Is buying an aircooled 911 the obvious choice, or is it the lazy one?==The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. The V-6 engine is more complicated and expensive to build than a straight-six, but far less refined. It exists only as a solution to a packaging problem — it’s not the kind of powerplant that engineers actually want to build. So why do we lust after the Alfa Romeo Busso V-6?Support the show (http://www.issimi.com)
