What happens when a family heirloom gets a NASCAR heart and a date with a mountain? We brought Richard Tomlin of Apex Auto Works on to share the full story of transforming a 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner into a Pike's Peak contender by setting the classic body over a stretched NASCAR truck chassis and dropping in a Mopar R5 P7 that sings to 9,500 RPM. The road to SEMA almost ended on the shoulder after a tow rig failure, but with help from racers and friends the car made a prime debut and drew a crowd that wanted every detail—how it was built, why it matters, and where it's headed next.We dig into the engineering: cutting and adding four inches to match the B-body wheelbase, aligning the shell, using NASCAR-style ride height adjusters, and balancing street presence with a proper cage, race seats, and belts. Then we climb into the thin-air problem. Pike's Peak starts near 8,000 feet and finishes above 14,000, so we talk mid-altitude tuning targets, power loss on NA engines, and a throwback solution—variable jetting on a carb, with insight from Brad Pink, son of legendary engine builder Ed Pink. The motor has already proved itself on the mountain in a C10, and we break down the expectations for power at altitude versus near sea level.Richard also opens the shop doors: a turbo LS7 Volvo, a refreshed '69 Roadrunner, a twin-turbo LS G-body in paint, and a batch of Miatas, including a Lemons car that a 17-year-old is repairing while learning to wrench. We talk craft, patience, and why “toys” deserve thoughtful timelines. Along the way, we swap stories about Charlotte's NASCAR spectacle—how great facilities make new fans—and preview a spring motorsports festival in Victoria's Riverside Park: a tight, time-attack course through the trees designed for stunning visuals and driver challenge. If you love bold builds, real-world engineering, and the culture that keeps car life vibrant, this one's for you. The Garage Hour does good interviews (whether or not Hostus Maximus Justin Fort is any good at interviews), and we did a semi-sneak beer attack on Chris Hefty at the eponymously named Hefty Fab last month. Unfortunately, with the hillclimb and about a gajillion client to-dos on the front burner, we're a little late with the upload. Sort'a sorry! No matter: it's worth the wait - we puzzle out the doin's of keeping a serious shop going when times get tight (as our hero Hunter S. once opined, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."). Chris details the art of shifting the lift when retail production took a hit post-Scamdemic, the intense and varied demands of the "Please make my truck work" customer, and what it takes to chase the market when the market takes a left turn at Albuquerque. Because it's the Garage Hour, we've got more: bicyclists who just don't get it, whether cleaning soap is a procedural singularity, Nate's efforts to reinvent the Brady Bunch, how you can ruin a good message with too much creativity, the Hefty Internet Café, and dropping $40Gs for serious parts that don't get serious use. There's also shock rebuilds, F-150s, Cherokees, an F-350, 80-Serieses in a big pile, Miatas versus S2Ks, and of course, 4Runners.

Laguna Seca. Nineteen privately owned Mazdas. And one man, lapping all those cars for Road & Track, quietly losing his mind.Car magazines: It's a weird gig.In this episode, Sam relives one of the more unhinged story pitches of his career: A nonstop weekend wrangling 19 wildly different Miatas. Modded and stock. V-8 swaps and K-swaps. Turbo four-cylinders that made everything from hamster power to some 360 hp at the wheels. Plus one car that looked suspiciously like an Ariel Atom... but wasn't.What you get here: another story from Sam's unlikely life in automotive journalism. And a broad, deeply weird, and strangely joyful look at the everlasting appeal of the world's most beloved roadster. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. Episode 140 is on the scene and we welcome Trans-Am Ta2 & NASCAR Xfinity Series Driver Thomas Annunziata to the show. We discuss his career which started in Karting, transitioned to racing spec Miatas and settling into the Trans-Am Ta2 Series where he was multiple events. This success opened doors to run in ARCA where he finished runner up at Daytona of all places in his debut. Thomas is working on pursuing a NASCAR career splitting a NASCAR Xfinity Series ride with Leland Honeyman for Cope Family Racing where he faces new obstacles with a relatively new team. Drew Dawson returned to victory lane in the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division at South Boston Speedway on Saturday. The middle of the three Dawson brothers is our guest and we discuss his big win on Saturday and if he had any words with Zach Peregoy as the two raced hard in the late stages. He also reveals who he would bump out of the way for a win and if he is the best of the three brothers who all race at South Boston. We give a full review of God's Pit Crew/First Responders Appreciation night from South Boston over the weekend. Hear from Peyton Sellers, Trevor Ward and Landon Pembleton who finished up front in the late model division. The guys debate if someone who has problems during the first race of a twin bill should be forced to use scuffed tires that has as many laps on them as a driver who finished the first race? Trevor Ward had this happen to him on Saturday as he failed to finish race one but was able to win convincingly in the other race. We also spoke with Landon and Kendall Milam who won in Hornets and Pure Stock on Saturday and they reveal which one like their Uncle is going to do a backflip for the next win. We preview the Mini's Mission CARS Tour event from Dominion Raceway. Can Doug Barnes parlay past Dominion success to his first CARS Tour win? Can Connor Hall and JR Motorsports get back on track at a place he's won before? What about Kaden Honeycutt as he returns to the tour? We discuss it all here.We review the racing from Michigan where we start part one of a discussion about whether ARCA is still considered the rung below the Truck Series as a development level for talent to run in Trucks, Xfinity and Cup. This stemmed off Brenden "Butterbean" Queen's third win of the season that happened at Michigan over the weekend. We discuss the breaking news involving the Virginia Triple Crown, preview the Whelen Modified Tour stop at Riverhead, the ASA STARS doubleheader in Wisconsin, dubs, race of the week and more this week on DLN!

Mazda launched its fourth generation, or ND as MX-5 fans would call it, almost a decade ago. Shaving weight from its NC-generation predecessor, this MX-5 excelled at what Miatas do best: be fun. Along the way, Miata squeezed more power and moved the redline of its 2.0-liter I4. The most recent group of upgrades usher in the ND3-era, or the third update for the ND-generation, and brings along some interesting hardware. While the powertrain is unchanged, Mazda stuffed a new limited-slip differential at the rear of Club models. The company also revised the steering system to increase steering feel even further with a new steering rack. Mazda also revamped its media system, which now features an 8.8-inch touchscreen. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a tour of the '24 Mazda Miata that highlights some of the new features and explains what it's like to live with. Later, Wren will take you along for a live drive review of the updated MX-5. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the latest Mazda MX-5, how the changes affect Mazda's beloved sports car, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2024 Mazda MX-5 RF special.
Antonio Della Polla joins us to share his knowledge in the world of rotaries, the various types and of course which are the most sought after. He also shares his knowledge of the Miata world, another platform he specializes in.
Do you like Miatas? Do you like talking about money? Well you're in the right place! Justin and Austin discuss the new ND Miata pricing for 2024, and do some insightful comparisons to pricing adjusted for inflation, along with Ford F-150 pricing for the same period!

Back with another energetic episode, Parker and Landon take another spin around the topic of manual EVs, this time armed with listener feedback and a fresh perspective. They also reflect on their initially successful but eventually thwarted sponsorship in Miatas - the car was primed for success, but the driver, unfortunately, ended up wrecked. Adding some drama, Parker recounts a nerve-wracking episode when he gambled on making it to the finish line with a near-empty gas tank, despite his crew chief's reservations. In the second half of the show, they delve into the unexpected development of Ryan Reynolds investing in Alpine F1 and its potential implications. They also toast to Ross Chastain's inspiring comeback at Nashville and applaud Producer Josh's remarkable fantasy win. Drawing the spotlight towards the track techniques, they evaluate Shane Van Gisbergen's unconventional right-foot braking strategy. Ooh baby, this one is a doozy! Ian's out because he had a baby, so Adron and Travis are coming up with baddies to toughen the little sucker up! Personally I'm scared of the pigglies who are going around haunting toes... Plus: three Miatas! Ye olde Best Western smoking policies! And baby eldritch blasts!
2docs and Adams discuss their love of the late 70s Mercedes 6.9 sedan (no power seats?!!!) and their non-love for the new Porsche 911 Dakar. Returning guest Jeff Bank joins the team to talk Miatas old and new, and then trauma surgeon Stephan does a deep dive into the world of active driver assistance systems (ADAS) and how much safer they keep us.
For Topic Tuesday the guys are asked why badges even matter? Is it best to hope there are enough open-minded people to judge what each car says and not what the badge tells them? They debate cars for Derek D. in Detroit, who asks if cars can haul and still be fun. Social media questions ask about the true definition of a dream car, is a faster car less fun while commuting, and how important is an LSD for a daily? Grant is a man of many talents, and it just so happens that building sweet rigs is one of them. By rigs, we mean vans (duh), Subarus, Miatas, golf carts, and pretty much everything else that has wheels and a motor. He gives us some expert insight on the state of the van-building world, and of course, we dive into some great tangents like giving away 30,000 Whoppers, getting comfortable with the uncomfortable, the pros and cons of the state of Florida, and One Wheels. At least we're pretty sure we talked about those. It's always great to have passionate and creative people at the BROG shop, and Grant definitely fits that description. In today's PorscheCooled Podcast Michael presents episode 79 of Owner Stories with Tyler from Minneapolis in the U.S. Having always loved sports cars, Tyler only got into Porsche quite recently. A fond memory of a ‘sports car' was his dads brand new red Chevy Cavalier. A car that Tyler though was the ‘coolest thing at the time'. This is also the car his dad taught him how to drive stick in - a car Tyler loved. Tyler only started thinking about Porsche around 2018 after seeing a very cool ‘80's Guards Red 911 on a business trip. This is not to say he never appreciated the lines and the iconic shape before then - he did. After attending an auction in 2019 (to look at Mazda Miatas) Tyler realised that it was possible to get a sports car for good money. In fact, some Miatas were even getting closer to Porsche world prices. This got Tyler thinking and searching. After enjoying his dads Cavalier Tyler owned sensible cars including Chevys and Hondas. In early 2020 the time felt right to get a ‘fun car on the side” this time Tyler decided to extend his search to Porsche and found one quite quickly. He went to view a 2001 Lapis Blue 986 Boxster and after the test drive he knew this was the car. A car he felt at one with. Tyler's Porsche journey moved forward quickly. In 2021, he decided that the ‘fun car needed a rear seat' for all the family to enjoy - his wife agreed. Tyler started the search for his first 911. The one to catch Tyler's attention was the Millennium Edition 996, a car his wife was not sold on. Moving forward the 997 generation became an option and Tyler knew what he wanted and started searching. Not long after he found one with every option on his list. His second Porsche is a ‘07 911 Carrera in black, manual with sand beige interior. The Honda Civic is gone, the Boxster is now up for sale and Tyler and his family are loving their Porsche 911. Welcome back to the PorscheCooled Podcast. Follow Tyler on Instagram @tylerttwoc Michael (@michael.bath) owns a first generation 997 Carrera, comes from Australia and currently resides in Bahrain. In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek ("Hyphen") Tam-Scott discuss having to choose between the Miata NC and ND, specially NC3 and ND2, after driving them back to back on a rally. Of course, the meandering conversation starts with BMW E90 and E90 LCIs, the term Life-Cycle Impulse, and the hideousness of E60 and the E65 BMWs. NB, Hyphen says, is not the right answer. But NC2 and NC3 might be. ND Miata proved the entire industry wrong — it's possible to drop weight and gain performance. But it didn't come alive until the ND2's higher-revving engine. But is it better than the NC2 Miata? And is even that better than an E30 BMW 325i? It takes an entire episode to find out, but the Carmudgeons are clear on this decision. And to discuss whether we're in a bubble of old-car values? == The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. It consists of multiple award-winning automotive journalist Jason Cammisa and automotive expert and Derek Tam-Scott of ISSIMI.
In this celebratory 50th episode of The Carmudgeon Show, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott regale us with tales of their 624-mile weekend old-car road rally. Derek brought his 964-chassis Porsche 911, Jason brought "Beatrice," his beater E30-chassis BMW 325i. Two friends bought Miatas: an NC3 and an ND2. More on the Mazdas in a future episode, we promise. Derek picked a route of the twistiest back roads Northern California can offer and the boys grabbed a couple hotels. Several things occurred to them: 1. California's passing laws suck because they put the onus of pulling over on the slower, weaker driver. 2. We've found our people: they use turn signals. 3. Track days are great, but we prefer back roads. 4. Tight and twisty back roads are more fun than track - it trades repetition for adventure. 5. This is the cheapest way of enjoying a weekend. 6. Poor Beatrice. 7. Focus on the driver mod!
00:00 - Time To Buy A First Generation NA Miata - Part 1This is part 1 of a 2-part series that explores why you should put an NA Miata on your bucket list. This small, fun, lightweight sports cars from Mazda was first introduced back in 1989 as a 1990 model and these first generation cars are now going up in price. Bargains can still be found though, so now's the time to act if you ever considered owning one. Mazda introduced the first Miata back on February 9, 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show and since then, more than one million Miatas have been sold, it's still in production today, and it's been named the best selling 2-seat convertible sports car of all time, so it's clear Mazda picked a winner. 01:25 - Four Generations Sold Since the Miata's Introduction in 1990 NA Miata - Model Years 1990 to 1997Original body style with pop-up headlights, reminiscent of a 1960s Lotus Elan. Split into two generations, the first was the NA6 from 1990-1993. These came with a 1.6-liter, DOHC 4-cylinder engine that made 116-horsepower and 110-lb.ft of torque. While they looked basically the same, the later NA8 cars from 1994-1997 had a bump in displacement to 1.8-liters and initially made 128-horsepower and 110-lb.ft. of torque. Power was later increased to 133-horsepower and 114-lb.ft. of torque in 1996. The initial 10% increase in horsepower was offset by a 4.5% increase in weight (about 100 lbs.) due to the addition of larger brakes, a passenger airbag and additional body bracing, both for increased side impact protection and handling. (There was NO 1998 Miata)NB Miata - Model Years 1999 to 2005The NB saw a major restyle of the exterior. Pop-up headlights were replaced with exposed headlights and other exterior refinements. The Engine's displacement remained the same at 1.8-liters, but now made 140-horsepower at launch, with a later bump to 142-horsepower in 2001. This generation of Miata also introduced the only MazdaSpeed version ever produced. It was available in 2004 and 2005 and featured a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine making 178-horsepower and 166-lb.ft. of torque. NC Miata - Model Years 2006 to 2015The NC Miata grew a bit in all dimensions. It was the heaviest generation of the Miata too, but to help offset that weight increase, it featured the highest horsepower of any normally aspirated Miata to date. The larger displacement 2.0-liter engine made 167-horsepower and 140-lb.ft. of torque. This was also the generation that saw the introduction of the PRHT or Power Retractable Hard Top in late 2006. This hard top retracted and folded in such a way that it did not interfere with trunk space. ND Miata - Model Years 2016 to PresentThe ND Miata is the fourth and current version of Mazda's 2-seat, rear drive convertible sports car. This generation saw a major re-emphasis on weight reduction, with overall weight inching closer to the first generation NA8 cars. The 2.0-liter engine size remained, but the engine's horsepower was set at 155 with 148-ft.lbs of torque. In spite of the horsepower reduction from the NC cars, he overall result was a lighter, faster ND Miata or MX-5 with improved fuel economy. And for 2019, the ND Miata saw a bump in power to 181-horsepower, along with an increase in torque to 151-lb.ft, making this the quickest Miata to date. 04:00 - Why consider getting an NA Miata now? These cars bottomed out on their depreciation curve a couple of years ago and continue to go up price. I talk about my past experience missing out on two specific cars (the Datsun 240Z and the BMW E30 M3) that I waited too long to buy before the prices went up dramatically. I didn't miss out on the early Miata though, and I suggest that you shouldn't miss your chance either. 07:05 - Dig...

We talk about Miatas with two Miata drivers, Jim Tramontano (No Money Motorsports) & Dave Peters (HPDEjunkie).Jim created No Money Motorsports - A site with the primary goal to get folks on track, as much as possible, by spending as little money as possible. He started autocrossing in 2007, started track days by volunteering with NASA in 2012 and moved up the HPDE ranks in his Daily Driver Miata. He's in his 5th year racing Spec Miata with NASA Northeast. Dave (Episode 16) created a website, HPDEjunkie, the most inclusive and most current listing of HPDE / Track Days and Open Track events for North America. We discuss their cars, how they built them, and get their advice on set ups and more.Setting tire pressures, alignments, and suspension settings all get discussed. Dave's tire pressure tip - use white marker to highlight the tiny triangles on the shoulder of your tires to see if you are going past that point. If you are, increase the tire pressure. If you aren't close to the triangles, reduce the tire pressure.Where to go for Miata advice and parts? Talk with other Miata drivers at a track day and see who's running well. Talk with them and see where they source their parts. If you race your Miata be sure to check out the Mazda Motorsports website for .
