Faith Matters is a bi-weekly Basilica of Saint Mary podcast that features conversations with Father Edward Hathaway, the Rector of the Basilica, on topics of interest to Basilica parishioners and the Universal Church. Today's episode centers on the Eucharist, as Father Hathaway invites parishioners to participate in the parish's June 22nd Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession and points out why it's important to be reverent to the fact that Jesus is fully present -- Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist -- citing a recent TV show that mocked the Eucharist. All are invited to take part in our traditional Corpus Christi procession following the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday, June 22, 2025. Clergy and parishioners will participate in this prayerful, joyous witness to our core Catholic belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. After the Mass, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament, south along Royal Street, to the school gym at 400 Green Street, and back to the Basilica for Benediction. Following Benediction, there will be a reception in the courtyard at 314 Duke Street that will feature Perrier, Prosecco and popsicles.

There's a danger that when the new stadium opens in Christchurch next year, we'll have no idea exactly what speed we should be going when we drive around the area. At the moment, the council wants it to be 30kph on Madras Street, Tuam Street, Lichfield Street, Duke Street, Hereford Street and St Asaph Street. But now it's being told by the Government that it can't do that, and I think they should just make it 50kph. I'll explain why shortly. There are also parts where the council wants the limit to be 10kph on Lichfield Street between Madras and Manchester. Apparently, the council believes that that can stay based on the design of the street and expected traffic volumes. If we wind back the clock, 2023 was when the council consulted us on the 30kph limit and, apparently, it got the tick from people and so that's been the plan ever since. But between then and now, the Government's got involved because it's not into all these reduced speed limits that popped up under the last government. Which means the council has been told that it needs to drop the 30kph speed limit idea and the speed limit around the stadium needs to be at least 40kph. And the council being the council, has to go and do a whole new round of consultation. Which has central city councillor Jake McLellan saying that it's nothing but a waste of time and money. He says the council should be left to decide for itself what speed limit it wants around the stadium. Or anywhere for that matter. And I'm with him on that bit. Of course it should. Except I want the council to set a 50kph, for the simple reason that if the traffic is crawling, we will all crawl. When everyone is trying to get to or around the stadium when there's a big event on, the speed limit could be 100kph, but we'd all still be going about 20 or 30 or even 10kph. Which is why I think most people, if they were asked, would say there should be no special speed limit and it should just be 50. Because I think it's simple really. If there's an event on where there are truckloads of people making their way to the stadium, traffic will be at a standstill anyway. Or there'll be roads completely closed off. There are no speed limits around the Apollo Projects Stadium – or the “temporary” stadium, as it's also known. I know that it's not right on the street, like the new one in town will be, but when there's a match on there or a concert or whatever, the traffic is what it is. Just like it will be when the new one is up and running. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Chad Pecknold, a Professor of Historical & Systematic Theology in the School of Theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and the Resident Theologian of the Basilica's Institute for Faith and Public Culture, shares part two of his two-part series on "Whither the Catholic Mission to America?" It was recorded on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in our Lyceum Auditorium, 313 Duke Street. In His Great Commission, Our Lord called His apostles “to make disciples of all nations.” The history of the Faith can be told as just that — the conversion of whole nations and cultures. So how should we understand the Catholic mission to America? What has been the dominant missiological strategy? Has it succeeded? Dr. Pecknold examines some historical problems with the Catholic mission to America and asks how our strategy might change to be more faithful to the Great Commission today.

We meet leading artist RENE MATIĆ to discuss current solo exhibition ‘A Girl For The Living Room' at Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol. This episode includes a special moment with living legend, and focus of Rene's new show, TRAVIS ALABANZA. We also explore earlier works exhibited at South London Gallery and their solo show at Quench Gallery, Margate. Plus we discuss a series of fifteen photographs that the Tate museum have acquired for their permanent collection - currently on display at Tate Britain's rehang of Modern and Contemporary British Art.Rene Matić (b. 1997, Peterborough, UK) is a London-based artist and writer whose practice spans across photography, film, and sculpture, converging in a meeting place they describe as "rude(ness)" - an evidencing and honouring of the in-between. Matić draws inspiration from dance and music movements such as Northern soul, Ska, and 2-Tone as a tool to delve into the complex relationship between West Indian and white working-class culture in Britain, whilst privileging queer/ing intimacies, partnerships and pleasure as modes of survival. In 2022 Martin Parr Foundation commissioned photographic artist Rene Matić to develop a new body of work in Bristol. Rene has created an intimate portrait of their friend Travis Alabanza, a Bristol born and based writer, performer and theatre maker. This new work comprises a mix of portraits alongside diaristic still lifes that document Rene and Travis's developing relationship as it became “lit by a table lamp instead of a disco ball.”‘We were excited to discover Rene's work and started to think about the idea of Rene shooting a project in Bristol and what this might look like. In 2022 we gave them a carte blanche to pursue any subject of their choice for this commission, so long as there was a Bristol connection. In ‘a girl for the living room' Rene has found a way of capturing and expressing their relationship with Travis Alabanza, a Bristol-born and based artist and performer.' – Martin ParrFollow @Rene.Matic on Instagram and their gallery @ArcadiaMissa, 35 Duke Street, London: https://arcadiamissa.com/rene-matic/A GIRL FOR THE LIVING ROOM BY RENE MATIĆ runs until 17th September 2023 in Bristol.Visit: @MartinParrFdn and https://www.martinparrfoundation.org/exhibitions/a-girl-for-the-living-room/Thanks for listening!!! Our Lord reminds us that whatever we do for the poor among us we do for Him. We hear Him with our hearts and minds, but the daily demands of life can leave us without the opportunity to respond in a most personal way. Becoming a volunteer and/or making a sacrificial donation to our parish's St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Society is that opportunity. In the podcast, Marietta Bernot, the Basilica's SVdP President, shares some staggering statistics about the amount of need in the community, especially concerning those families who are being evicted from their homes, and how the society is helping them. She also shares some inspiring stories of how the society helped families who were in a dire situations. What makes SVdP unique among all charity providers in Alexandria is that they go to the people who call for help, visiting them in their homes, confirming their need, listening to their challenges, and showing them in the most real way that they are not alone and not forgotten by Our Lord. It is an extraordinary gift to be able to touch someone's life in this way. Please join the society for their upcoming open house at the parish's Lyceum Auditorium, 313 Duke Street, on November 2, 2022, from 7:30-9 p.m. to learn more. They are seeking more volunteers, so if you are interested, please attend. Any questions, please email Marietta at svdp@stmaryoldtown.org.

In today's podcast, it's emerged a major blaze that destroyed a business on a Kent harbour had been caused by contractors working for Canterbury city council. The Crab and Winkle Restaurant and Whitstable Fish Market were destroyed in May after the fire broke out in the neighbouring cockle shed. We speak to the co-owner of the restaurant and fish market. Also today, it's feared there could be a severe shortage of midwives in Kent as a training course has been suspended. Dozens of people have suddenly been told they can't study midwifery at Canterbury Christ Church University. The regulator's stepped in following concerns about students being left unsupervised with patients. A foodbank in Margate has been left considering whether to close, after being broken into for the third time in twelve months. Shopkeepers at MiCommunity in Duke Street found someone had made off with £1,000 worth of stock on Tuesday. And, the KentOnline Podcast has been told it's more important than ever to protect the Swanscombe peninsula. It's after one of the UK's rarest bumble bees was spotted at the site. We caught up with Jamie Robins from Conservation charity Bug Life.

A keel-laying ceremony took place at Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku to officially mark the start of the revolutionary ship's physical construction, with Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku senior executives and teams in attendance. The keel laying, a longstanding maritime tradition, involved a 3,000-ton crane lifting a massive steel block that is placed into the new ship's building dock and on top of freshly minted coins, which represent the shipyard and cruise line. The coins are meant to bring luck during construction, and they will be retrieved and given to Icon's captain and crew before setting sail.Icon will set sail next year with the latest innovations and signature features Royal Caribbean's teams have imagined and reimagined in bold, new ways, including a shift toward cleaner energy. The first of three Royal Caribbean ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) – the cleanest fossil fuel available to cruise ships today. Combining LNG with a lineup of the cruise line's proven applications, such as shore power connection and waste heat recovery systems that repurpose excess energy to help power the ship's operations, Icon will be the next important step in Royal Caribbean's journey toward a clean-energy future.Signed, sealed, delivered… Celebrity Beyond. Exactly 20 years ago – on 5 April 2002 – the first two ships in the fleet were christened A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNA in Rostock. A-ROSA celebrates the anniversary on board its ships with an A-ROSA United Event, where guests celebrate together with the crew until late at night. With the introduction of the A-ROSA brand, river cruises were offered for the first time to a younger clientele – detached from conventions, casual, active and full of highlights on board and ashore. The company has always remained true to this concept.Review of the christening of A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNAAfter a construction period of only twelve months in the Neptun Yard Rostock, the two innovative river ships A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNA received their official names during a double christening ceremony on 5th April 2002 in Rostock's city harbour.Godmother of A-ROSA BELLA was the 18-year-old The Honourable Anna Sterling, daughter of Lord Sterling of Plaistow, Chairman of P&O Princess Cruises. A-ROSA DONNA was christened by Anja Mager, 19 years old and an office management trainee with Seetours in Rostock. After an experience ship tour and reception in the coffee house on board, the guests were invited to the dinner “La BELLA DONNA” with live entertainment in the Nikolaikirche Rostock.Immediately after the christening, the two 860-ton ships left the Rostock overseas port expertly packed and secured on a barge for the Danube delta.History of A-ROSAThe A-ROSA brand was founded in 2000 by Seetours, the German offshoot of P&O Princess Cruises. Shortly after the deployment of the first two Danube ships, the company was taken over by Deutsche Seereederei in 2003 and the Danube fleet was expanded by two more ships. The Rhône was introduced as a new trade lane in 2005, on which A-ROSA STELLA and LUNA have been cruising ever since. In 2009, the first cruises on the Rhine started and the financial investor Waterland bought A-ROSA. After three classic Rhine ships, two Rhine-Main-Danube ships were put into service in 2012 and 2014 with the A-ROSA SILVA and FLORA. In 2013, Jörg Eichler came on board as managing director and introduced the premium all-inclusive fare and family cruises with Kids Club from 2014.With the Seine, the second French cruising area was added to the portfolio in 2017. After the takeover by the British financial investor Duke Street in 2018, the A-ROSA ALVA set sail on Portugal's Douro. In the 20th anniversary year of 2022, a total of twelve A-ROSA ships will be sailing in five European destinations. In May 2022, the A-ROSA SENA, the most innovative ship in the fleet, will join them, offering more space for the A-ROSA concept – spacious balcony cabins, a dedicated Family Area with Kids Club, several restaurants and bars as well as a particularly large wellness and fitness area. Thanks to a hybrid drive system with battery storage, it is the most climate-friendly cruise ship on Europe's rivers. A-ROSA also presented its new orientation from 2023, where even more quality and individuality will be offered with a PremiumPLUS range. And more... On the podcast, two of SVdP leaders, Jim Larocco and Pete Bautz, share amazing stories about how the society helps those in need and why the needs lately have been so great. What makes SVdP unique among all charity providers in Alexandria is that we go to the people who call for help, visiting them in their homes, confirming their need, listening to their challenges, and showing them in the most real way that they are not alone and not forgotten by Our Lord. It is an extraordinary gift to be able to touch someone's life in this way. Please join us for our upcoming open house at 314 Duke Street in Alexandria, VA, on September 27, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. to learn more.
Hilary Munger is the Director of Religious Education at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Alexandria, VA. In this episode, she shares about the importance of continuing faith formation to grow a relationship with Jesus and how that knowledge inspires her to help others be formed in the faith so that, she hopes and prays, they become the saints that God calls us to be. If you're interested in becoming Catholic, or learning more about Catholicism, or you're missing the Sacraments, consider checking out the Basilica's Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), which offers an opportunity to meet in a small group setting to learn more about the Catholic faith. An open house/first meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Basilica's Lyceum, 313 Duke Street. For more information on the Basilica's Religious Education Program, in general, contact Hilary by email at hmunger@stmaryoldtown.org, or by phone at (703) 836-4100, ext. 3033

This podcast is provided by Ben Glass and Steve Emmert www.BenGlassReferrals.com - www.Virginia-Appeals.com Granted Appeal Summary Case JANE WASHBURN ROBINSON, TRUSTEE FOR THE JANE WASHBURN ROBINSON LIVING TRUST v. NELS P. NORDQUIST, ET AL. (Record Number 180631) From The Circuit Court of the City of Alexandria; L. Kemler, Judge. Counsel Thomas F. Urban, II (Law Office of Urban & Falk, PLLC) and Mikhael D. Charnoff (Perry Charnoff PLLC) for appellant. John D. McGavin and Dawn E. Boyce (Bancroft, McGavin, Horvath & Judkins, P.C.) for appellees. Assignments of Error The trial court erroneously granted Defendants’ Plea in Bar on the basis of improper factual findings that Plaintiff’s Trespass and Nuisance claims were “continuous” rather than “intermittent” and thus barred by the applicable statute of limitations despite admissions by Defendants and independent evidence that the trespass and nuisance did not occur each year during the winter months when a sprinkler system was turned off, as well as when Defendants did not use other watering methods, which are actions within the Defendants’ control. The trial court erred when it denied Plaintiff’s motion for leave to amend her Trespass and Nuisance claims to properly reflect the evidence adduced during discovery and reflected in attachments to Defendants’ Plea Brief. The trial court erred when it granted Defendants’ Demurrer, holding that the 1960 Deed of Bargain and Sale and Easement’s “perpetual easement” to the owner of 404 Duke Street and its successors “to keep and maintain openings on the west side of the premises: 404 Duke Street overlooking the premises 406-8 Duke Street, for the purpose of admitting light and air through said openings,” was “vague,” “ambiguous,” and therefore, “unenforceable,” which circumvented and ignored the intent of the drafters to protect the access of Plaintiff’s property to light and air for Plaintiff’s openings. The trial court erred when it held that the provision in a 1969 Deed of Indenture that created a “3-foot strip of land (herein called the Median)” that “shall forever be and remain open and free of all buildings and structures . . . except as aforesaid the same shall be and remain open yard, the right so secured hereby to be appurtenant to 404 [Duke] and enjoyed by [the owner of 404 Duke]” only protected the Median’s “open yard” from a certain class of items in a narrow definition of “buildings” and “structures,” but allowed all other types of obstructions to be placed within the defined Median, thus circumventing and ignoring the intent of the Indenture’s drafters. The trial court erred by refusing to issue a Rule to Show Cause and by entering an order restricting Plaintiff’s access to the openings on the west side of Plaintiff’s properties despite the 1960 “perpetual easement” allowing the owner of 404 Duke Street and 303 S. Royal St. (Plaintiff) access to enter the yard of 406 Duke Street “to keep and maintain openings on the west side of 404 overlooking 406-8 [Duke St.]” without any such restrictions.
William Alexander Bustamante (1884-1977) was a Jamaican labor leader who became Jamaica's first chief minister under limited self-government and the first prime minister after independence in 1962.William Alexander Bustamante, perhaps Jamaica's most flamboyant and charismatic politician, was born William Alexander Clarke on February 24, 1884. His father, Robert Constantine Clarke, a member of the declining white plantocracy, was the overseer of a small, mixed-crop plantation called Blenheim, in the parish of Hanover on the then-isolated northwestern coast of the island. By virtue of the second marriage of Elsie Hunter, his paternal grandmother, to Alexander Shearer, he became distantly related to both Norman Washington Manley and Michael Manley, as well as to Hugh Shearer. After his return to Jamaica, Bustamante established himself as a money-lender in modest offices on Duke Street, then the desired cachet for all business addresses in Kingston. He installed Gladys Longbridge as his private secretary, and she was to accompany him for the rest of his life as confidante, assistant, companion, and, finally, after September 6, 1962, his second wife. Bustamante described himself as a dietician and businessman with North American experience, but while he might have returned with some wealth to the island, his formal training and experience were mostly his own fantastic fabrication. All of Scripture is given to us for “teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness” which, of course, includes the book of Psalms. We can certainly study the psalms, learn from them, be corrected by them, and trained by them for righteousness, just like the rest of the Scriptures. But the Psalms are unique—they are the hymnbook of the people of God, and they are meant to be sung.
