Darek Oles (Oleszkiewicz) was born on February 20, 1963 in Wroclaw, Poland. At the age of five Oles began his music education at the State Music School in Wroclaw. Piano was his first instrument, but later he played guitar, electric bass and finally at eighteen years old, he switched to accoustic bass. While in his teens he played with amateur groups, evolving in popular music styles from rock, blues, jazz-rock to straight ahead jazz. In the early 1980's, Oles participated in various jazz festivals and national competitions for young musicians. In 1983, he was the most awarded musician at the Jazz Juniors in Cracow, winning the first individual prize, first prize for jazz composition and a second prize in jazz combo category. Later that year Oles was invited by Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, a jazz legend in Poland, to join saxophonist's quartet on tour.In the following five years Darek Oles was working steadily with some of the best jazz bands in the country such as: Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet, Tomasz Szukalski Quartet, Henryk Majewski Quintet, Wojciech Karolak Trio and Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio and Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski Quartet. With those groups he recorded for Polish Jazz, Polskie Nagrania, East Wind and also for the radio and television in Poland and abroad. Darek was touring extensively in Poland, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Cuba, Mexico and performed at major festivals, concerts and jazz club venues. In 1988, Darek Oles arrived in Los Angeles with a simple plan in mind: to broaden his musical horizon. One year later he received a full scholarship from California Institute Of The Arts and began studies with the legendary bassist Charlie Haden. After graduation in 1992, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute, where he has been conducting jazz ensembles and teaching bass ever since. Since 2002 Oles has been a jazz faculty member at the University Of California in Irvine.Aside from his teaching duties, Darek Oles has been very active as a performer and became one of the most sought after bass players on the West Coast. “Oles” (his American nick-name) had the opportunity to perform and record with the greatest masters in jazz. A partial list of his collaborations include: Brad Mehldau, Billy Higgins, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Eddie Henderson, Charles Lloyd, John Abercrombie, Bennie Maupin, Lee Konitz, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua, Bennie Wallace, Victor Lewis, Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, James Newton, Arthur Blythe, Lew Tabackin, Steve Kuhn, Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, Billy Hart, Kevin Hays, Munyungo Jackon, Steve Hass, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Marian McPartland, Janis Siegel, Bob Brookmeyer, Curtis Fuller, Roy McCurdy, Tom Harrell, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart, Chris Potter, Kei Akagi, Billy Childs, Bob Sheppard, Joe LaBarbera, Bill Cunliffe, Patrice Rushen, Bennie Golson, Piotr Baron, Teri Lynn Carrington, Buddy De Franco, Terry Gibbs, Anthony Wilson Nonet and Los Angeles Jazz Quartet.Moods in Freedom on SpotifySupport the showInstagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA / View More Episodes

Tonight is a concert presentation of the "Second Great Gerry Mulligan Quartet" before a rapt and enthusiastic French audience in Paris in June 1954. The first edition of the Mulligan pianoless Quartet had trumpeter Chet Baker on the front line with baritone saxophonist Mulligan and was one of the most popular and talked about combos of it's time. Due to a variety of circumstances the Baker & Mulligan Quartet ended and after a time Mulligan reassembled the group with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer on the front line with Mulligan plus a new rhythm section with the great Red Mitchell on bass and the shamefully underrated drum master Frank Isola. They were booked to play in Paris and were welcomed like a liberating army. Both Mulligan and Brookmeyer were also great composers along with being two of the leading voices on their horns so it was a perfect fit. These concert recordings are tonight's Jazz Feature and demonstrate how fresh and new this band still sounds after so many years. Check it out tonight and you'll be glad you did.

Ever since Louis Armstrong's unique trumpet voice captured my ear at the age of five, I have tried in different ways to express myself with my own individual voice on the trumpet, an instrument I was given at the age of eight. I was born in 1962 in Gothenburg, Sweden. I studied at the music departments of the high schools of Ljungskile 1980–81 and Ingesund 1981–83 and at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm 1984–86. Lasse Lindgren worked busily as a freelance jazz-and-lead trumpeter during his years as a music student and in the years following during the ‘80s when he lived in Stockholm. The first band under Lasse's own leadership was called “Outfront” and this was followed by another that among its activities toured with valve-trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer. Lasse then started a family and moved to Sandviken, working as jazz-and-lead trumpeter with Sandviken Big Band 1989–1997. He also performed in the same role with Bohuslän Big Band 1991–1997 and in the following years with the Danish Radio Big Band (later “Jazz Orchestra”) 1997–2000. In recent years he has diversified and let go of the world of employment in order to pursue his more personal dreams. The Lasse Lindgren Constellations come in a wide variety of settings and possibilities. Grandi inediti - Stan Getz: Getz at the Gate

Jazz Anthology

Tonight's Jazz Feature was the last recording of one of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz' finest bands. This was a truly magical band that included Getz and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, they both exhibited a genuine 6th sense and blended and played together so well. The band for this session was re-united for a series of concerts and this recording done in Los Angeles on November 9,1954. There was only one change in personnel and that was bassist Bill Anthony who replaced the original bassist, Teddy Kotick. This band was together for a major part of 1953 and recorded extensively then re-united in 1954. The band consisted of Getz and Brookmeyer and a wonderful pianist from Vermont named Johnny Williams, The aforementioned Bill Anthony was on bass and a wonderful drummer who was a model of lightness and taste named Frank Isola. They recorded 6 tunes here, four standards and one Basie blues and an original by Brookmeyer and that was the end of what was arguably one of Stan Getz' best bands and for some people, one of the finest Jazz groups ever! The sound was cool and the music was hot!

This is a fine straight forward set from the mid-50s that is led by one of the most original guitarists to come up in that era from the late 40s to the 50s and beyond. The set is not music that is re-inventing the wheel or pushing the envelope but it has it's own kind of basic swing, melodic invention and creativity. Guitarist Raney appears here with his musical soul-mate, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and these two very talented and musical gentlemen combine forces in this wonderfully unpretentious disc recorded in New York in 1956. A wise selection of standards that are well chosen and two original compositions each by Raney and Brookmeyer make up the 8 selections. The stellar rhythm section consists of Dick Katz on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and Osie Johnson on drums for the first 4 tunes and Katz is replaced on the final 4 by the venerable Hank Jones. Jimmy Raney and Bob Brookmeyer were great friends and they make music that reflects this fact. Enjoy!
