How does Tatami Time Machine Blues differ from The Tatami Galaxy? How does The Girl From The Other Side configure into the current anime landscape? What can music videos teach us about storytelling? All this and more in this episode. Thanks so much for your patience over the first half of this year (and before that) - I'm graduating this month which means I finally have the time to produce the podcast consistently again. Better than the hat trick. Composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch won the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony awards. He was one of only 16 people to do so. And he, along with Richard Rodgers, won all four of those awards plus a Pulitzer Prize. His first job was a rehearsal pianist for “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand. During this interview I learned that he wrote a hit song for a top 40 female artist. Marvin was probably best known for writing “The Entertainer” for the movie “The Sting.” He also wrote “The Way We Were,” and “Nobody Does it Better” for the film “The Spy Who Loved Me.” And there were many others including “Chorus Line” and “They're Playing Our Song” which was based on his relationship with Carole Bayer Sager.

One of the earliest examples of a prog rock record was Days of Future Passed, the second studio album by The Moody Blues. Originally a rhythm and blues band, The Moody Blues were in difficult financial straits when they convinced the record company to combine their music with orchestral elements and interludes in a single album. The group recorded much of their sessions first, then provided these to conductor Peter Knight, who directed the London Festival Orchestra (the house orchestra for Decca Records) in arrangements and orchestral interludes. The Moody Blues for this album are Justin Hayward on guitar, piano, and vocals, John Lodge on bass and vocals, Mike Pinder on keyboards and vocals, Ray Thomas on flute, piano, and vocals, and Graeme Edge on drums and vocals.Days of Future Passed is created as a concept around a day in the life of "an everyday man." It begins with a track appropriately entitled "The Day Begins," and concludes with a piece labeled "The Night," which we know as "Nights in White Satin," and "Late Lament." The album was somewhat successful when first released, but would climb in popularity over a long period of time, particularly on the growing strength of "Nights in White Satin" on FM radio in the U.S. It would eventually peak on the album charts at number 2 in the U.S. - in 1972!Brian takes us on this day trip. Dawn: Dawn Is a FeelingKeyboardist Mike Pinder wrote this song, the first track sung after the Instrumental overture and spoken recitation. As the name implies, it represents the start of the day.Lunch BreakBassist John Lodge sings lead on this song which he also wrote. The fast pace is suggestive of the hectic period of lunch hour on a business day. The song has an orchestral introduction which was recorded separately from the rest of the track.Tuesday Afternoon Also known as "Forever Afternoon" or "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", the song was originally intended to be named "Tuesday Afternoon" but was changed for the album. It was released as "Tuesday Afternoon" when released as a single. Justin Hayward wrote the song in Lypiatt Park on a (you guessed it) Tuesday afternoon.Nights In White Satin/Late LamentHayward composed this hit at the age of 19 in Belgium, inspired by a gift of satin bedsheets given by his girlfriend. The song is about a yearning love from afar. The strength of this song would provide the success for both the album and The Moody Blues as a whole. Late Lament was written by drummer Graeme Edge, and is recited by keyboardist Mike Pinder. This is the only album track on which the band recorded with the London Festival Orchestra rather than separately. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Won't You Be My Neighbor? (the main theme to the children's series Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood)The television series starring Fred Rogers debuted nationally this month. STAFF PICKS:Tomorrow by Strawberry Alarm ClockBruce starts us off with a psychedelic and sunshine pop group out of Los Angeles. This song is the first single off the group's second album, "Wake Up...It's Tomorrow." It would hit number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would be their second and final top 40 hit. "But right now I am with you, and together we can make it through."Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song) by The BuckinghamsRob's staff pick continues in the sunshine pop genre with a band out of Chicago. This is off their album "Portraits," and made it to number 12 on the charts. "Sunshine Pop" is rooted in easy listening and "advertising jingles." The Buckinghams got their name in an attempt to channel some of the success of the British Invasion. They had 5 top 40 hits in 1967. Nobody But Me by the Human BeinzWayne brings us a well-known cover originally performed by The Isley Brothers. There are over 100 "no's" in this song and 47 "nobody's," making it quite literally a quite negative song. While this would be the only entry into the top 10, it would become a staple of Fraternity parties from then on. Sunday Mornin' by Spanky & Our GangBrian features Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane as lead woman for the band. Spanky & Our Gang had a number of hits in the 60's. This sunshine pop song peaked at number 30 as a single, and preceded the album by several months. COMEDY TRACK:Here Come the Judge by Shorty LongThis funky novelty song was inspired by a skit on Rowan & Martin's "Laugh In," and was Long's biggest hit, rising to number 4 on the charts.
Dennis Tufano was the original singer of The Buckinghams. In the 1960s this band had a string of hits that dominated the radio. “Kind Of A Drag”, “Don't You Care”. “Mercy Mercy Mercy”, “Hey Baby They're Playing Our Song” and “Susan” were a big part of the American response to the British Invasion. Born and raised in Queens, NY, Michael is a graduate of the prestigious Archbishop Molloy High School and the renowned music conservatory. The Manhattan School of Music. Upon graduation from The Manhattan School in 1971, he pursued a career as a professional performing musician spanning the next 35 years. While still in Manhattan, Michael started his professional playing career by being a frequent substitute drummer/percussionist at the long-running off-Broadway production of Jacques Brel Is Alive & Well & Living in Paris. Besides touring in the early 70s with Broadway National tours of Promises, Promises, Applause, and The Magic Show, Michael was also in bands backing Sally Kellerman, Dionne Warwick, The 5th Dimension, and Jane Olivor. Being hired as the original drummer for They're Playing Our Song on Broadway led to the beginning of his long and rewarding working & personal relationship with Marvin Hamlisch. With Marvin's complete & trusting support, Michael embarked on a second related career as a Music Coordinator beginning in 1992. In 1993 he was Music Coordinator and drummer for Marvin's The Goodbye Girl. From 1990 until 2005, Michael was conductor and drummer for all of Marvin's concert appearances. In addition to contracting many films and TV score recordings of Marvin's music, Michael was given his greatest opportunity when Marvin entrusted him to hire and coordinate the 63-piece orchestra for the Barbra Streisand concert tour in 1994. Michael repeated that effort several times over the next 15-20 years. Upon closing the Broadway production of Imaginary Friends featuring Marvin's music, Michael chose to put away his drumsticks and concentrate solely on his burgeoning career as a Music Coordinator. Among over a hundred Broadway productions coordinated by Michael since 1993 are Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, The Book of Mormon, Wicked, and The Lion King. Michael's life is complete with his wife of 40 years, Actress/Dancer/Choreographer Pamela Sousa, son Zachary, daughter Alexis, daughter-in-law Christin, and grandson Gavin Michael. For more: https://www.m2music.nyc/about-usThank you for reading Broadway Drumming 101. He ended up penning a #1 smash for the Buckinghams, “Kind of a Drag.” That was followed up by a trio of hits: “Don’t You Care,” “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song)” and “Susan” - all Top 20 smashes in the span of a year. In this episode, the two Matts stop a story-train from going off the rails, forget to do a skit themed around Halloween like we have for the last two years, reminisce on old theater productions Matt David was once in, and talk about minimalist casts in stories and shows. How many characters is the maximum in a minimalist cast? What are the advantages and detriments to writing such a small cast for a story? Are you limited on what kinds of stories you can tell? Will Matt David ever get back into trick-or-treating and scare off little kids with his grown-man-doing-a-child's-activity antics? We discuss it all, with a minimalist cast of two, and talk about They're Playing Our Song, Urinetown, Zombieland, and a potential future story idea of Matt Donald's called Io. Will anything come of it? Probably not. Have any feedback or questions for our hosts? Email us at mattd@matthewdonaldcreator.com. Special guest, Diana Parry-Cruwys, finally gets another chance to pick a song of her very own with this week's "To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High) by alt-country, prolific rocker, Ryan Adams. Not the guy who sang "Summer of '69". We discuss how unlike My Bloody Valentine this song is, how hard it is to pick just one song when you write an album a year, how drugs are bad. Stay in school kids. Please very much enjoy! If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
A return visit from Jack Every to the TPOS studio gets us bringing the funk. Noise may be brought as well. Regardless, we spend a pleasant time talking about the amazing Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings' "I Learned the Hard Way". What makes this modern take on the Motown sound so cool? And does anybody know how to make a hang-up click on a cell phone? We're plumbing unknown genres this week, folks! Also, a rare TV recommendation unrelated to music but correlated with deliciousness. Please very much enjoy! Manny Azenberg is a theatre producer and general manager whose professional relationship with playwright Neil Simon spans thirty-three years. He first met Neil Simon in 1963 and their professional association began with The Sunshine Boys in 1972 and continued with God's Favorite, Chapter Two, They're Playing Our Song, Biloxi Blues, Broadway Bound, The Goodbye Girl, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor, among others. His additional credits include Mark Twain Tonight!, The Rothschilds, Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death, Sticks and Bones, The Wiz, The Real Thing, Sunday in the Park with George, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Rent, Movin' Out, Stones in His Pockets, and Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of La Bohème. Listen in to hear Manny talk about: The greatest things he learned from David Merrick and Alexander Cohen, and what Merrick would think of Broadway today. How he feels about having so many producers on a project . . . and could we ever go back to just one? How playing baseball with Robert Redford changed his life. His mantra that helps him get over the shows that don’t work. What his Yale class thought when they read Bright Beach Memoirs and how that taught him to evaluate shows. And buckets more. After comparing our local classic rock stations (RIP, radio), super-guest and music encyclopedia, Chris Hornbostel, and I get into the deep talk about The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter". Buy why is it an amazing song? Not just because it captures the turmoil of the 60's, not just because it's a secretly scary song, not just because of Keith Richards blusey, jazzy guitar, not just because of Mick Jagger's excellent lyrics, not just because of Merry Clayton's virtuouso performance, not just because of Charlie Watts' perfect snare beats, but...well, listen to the episode to find out. Let's celebrate the end of the peace and love era together, shall we?Please very much enjoy! If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
Rob's solo-casting it up this week with one of his personal favorite's, ELOs "Mr. Blue Sky". Listen in horror as he attempts to describe fancy orchestral words! Stare in sympathy as he consults his thesaurus to come up with new words for "awesome"! Flee from the overwhelming gushing of good vibes and joyousness! Feel happy emotions deep inside your soul as you realize that you've already started humming the chorus. Don't hide away for so long, listener: embrace the sun before Mr. Night comes to ruin the party. Please very much enjoy! Matt Summers makes a triumphant return with a song that has absolutely nothing wrong with it, The Breeders' "Cannonball". Is it true that the Ewoks provide backing vocals to Kim Deal? Is anything cooler than early-90s distortion effects? And is being a great band with an awesome single the same as being a one-hit wonder?Have a swig of this delicious shimmy shake while you listen. Please very much enjoy! While I messed up and forgot that "Imagine" was actually from the album Imagine, special guest, Terry Parretti, lifelong educator and dancer, forgives me in the name of John Lennon's message of peace, humanity, and love. We discuss what happens when we die and if it even matters, the power of music in teaching, and just how crummy the 70s were. Stay tuned until the end for some free choreography consultation. Please very much enjoy! If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
This week we sip lemon gin with writer/comedian/nice person, Hunter Gardner. to celebrate the season with a discussion of "Almost Summer" by Jason Collett. We wonder why summer sounds so sad in this song, opine on the indignities of youthful intoxication, and embarrass each other with bad date stories. Our pants remain securely around our ankles. Please very much enjoy If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
Because they did me the favor of visiting me, I forced a good 40% of my extended family into the ol' podcast studio to discuss our favorite songs about America and the summertime, but mostly the summertime.Hang ten and put your wayfarers on for a deep conversation on topics like what's the opposite of America, when's the best time to barbeque, is Dave Matthews music a substitute for Ambien, and just how awesome is a bottle of Zima? And in a They're Playing Our Song first: country music! Then a somber tangent about regret, past joys, and growing up as summer vacation hits the halfway point. Please very much nostal-joy! If you want to join us in thinking fondly about the songs we discussed, here's the final list:"It Must Be Summer" by Fountains of Wayne (Rob's choice)"Surfin' U.S.A." by The Beach Boys (Heejean's choice)"Hot Fun In the Summertime" by Sly and the Family Stone (Brendon's choice)"Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Justin's choice)"Heavy Metal Drummer" by Wilco (Diana's choice)"Cold Beverage" by G. Love and Special Sauce (Jessica's choice)"Summertime" by Kenny Chesney (Mike's choice)"The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley (Sara's choice)"Summersong" by The Decemberists (Rob's original summer choice) If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
It's the big 50th episode of the show! And I booked a bunch of young children to make noise in the background. What better way to celebrate our house party than by talking about Grouplove's "Tongue Tied". Listen to me wax philosophically about the deep, deep meanings of the song and how it taps into our collective unconscious about how crappy it is to try to get a date. Everyone else just talks about medical problems and strategies for laser tag. Thanks to everyone for listening and thanks to all our guests for sharing their songs! You all make this show a pleasure to do.Hope you all very much enjoy our anniversary! If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element Download Mp3
Every week director Robert W Schneider and actor Kevin David Thomas pull back the curtain on neglected, forgotten, and underappreciated musicals, as well as bizarre performances, endearing television appearances, and all things show business. This Week: The joys of intimate musicals!
It's Part 2 of the epic battle royale that is ETHERIDGE-OFF!! This week, I'm rejoined by Diana Parry-Cruwys who hopes to derail my assertion that the most superior song is Melissa Etheridge's "I Want To Come Over". We break all our concert plans to warble a passionate plea for all the star-crossed lovers out there before explaining the secret meanings of the too happy guitar-solo and why are is so damn sad. Remember, place your vote for Etheridge-Off on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments below. Please very much enjoy! The castaway in Desert Island Discs this week is one of America's most successful playwrights. Since he opened Come Blow Your Horn on Broadway in 1961, Neil Simon has written at least a play a year, and they include Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, Lost in Yonkers, as well as the hit musicals Sweet Charity and They're Playing Our Song. He'll be telling Sue Lawley about his childhood in the Bronx, his days in the army, and how as one of New York's most famous literary sons, he now spends most of his time in Los Angeles.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: A Foggy Day by Fred Astaire Book: How To Swim Luxury: Large harmonica
