Three women tell deeply personal stories in audiobooks that gain even more force through performance. Michele Cobb joins host Jo Reed to discuss A Hymn to Life by Gisèle Pelicot, who discovered that her husband had drugged her and arranged to have dozens of men assault her over the course of many years. The book recounts her life, the trial, and the reckoning that followed, all narrated by Emma Thompson with remarkable restraint and empathy. Next comes a discussion of The End of My Life Is Killing Me by Annabelle Gurwitch, read by the author with warmth, comic timing, and mischievous candor as she navigates stage 4 lung cancer and divorce. Finally, they discuss You With the Sad Eyes, written and read by actor Christina Applegate, who reflects on childhood trauma, fame, cancer, and living with multiple sclerosis; her unguarded narration—complete with journal entries, cracked laughter, and tearful moments—gives the book unusual emotional immediacy. These memoirs don't offer neat resolutions, but they do reveal the special intimacy that happens when difficult stories are spoken aloud. Audiobooks Discussed: A Hymn to Life: Shame Has To Change Sides by Gisèle Pelicot with Judith Perrignon; translated by Natasha Lehrer and Ruth Diver; read by Emma Thompson (Penguin Random House Audio) The End of My Life is Killing Me: The Unexpected Joys of a Cancer Slacker by Annabelle Gurwitch, read by the author and Andie MacDowell (Zibby Books) You With the Sad Eyes: A Memoir written and read by Christina Applegate (Hachette Audio) Learn more about your ad choices. LA SPINZ – March 30, 2026 – Final Sequence Segment 1: KPOP supergroup BTS returned to the limelight after a 4 year hiatus to complete military service. “Arirang,” the group's first studio album in six years, debuted with 110 million first-day streams on Spotify, which easily beat the 63 million that the year's previous leader, Harry Styles' “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally” did on ITS first day. SORRY HARRY. Segment 2: Noah Kahan made audiences laugh and cry at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Kahan is featured in a new Netflix documentary about depression and body dysmorphia, called “Out Of Body.” In the film, Kahan opens up about his disordered eating, saying he has struggled with his body image for 15 years. But DON'T pass the popcorn…he KAHAN't eat it. Segment 3: A video of Taylor Frankie Paul throwing barstools and cursing at her ex in front of her crying child caused Disney to pull the plug on Paul's upcoming season of “The Bachelorette”. However, Taylor's castmates on “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” had ALREADY complained to Disney previously about her behavior….so Disney already KNEW. Bad mouse! Segment 4: Director Sofia Coppola has shelved a planned 2026 film project with long-time collaborator Kirsten Dunst, stating the project felt “too SAD” given the current “dark times”. The untitled period piece, which was set to shoot in the U.S., is dead in the water. Coppola said she wants to direct a docu-drama on Britney Spears. And that's NOT sad? Segment 5: In her best-selling memoir, ‘You with the Sad Eyes', Christina Applegate confesses to dumping Brad Pitt for Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach. She says that Pitt was her date to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, but when she met Bach there, she dumped Pitt to hang out with the rocker. Bach, now 57, says he was just a YOUTH, GONE WILD. Segment 6: Dead Or Alive: Nicholas Brendon is best known for playing Xander Harris for 7 seasons of “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.” Dead Or Alive? DEAD. In recent years, Harris had issues with drugs and had left the entertainment industry and focused on art and painting. He was NOT being considered for the “Buffy” spinoff which ALSO died last week. BOOO. Sorry. Segment 7: The trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has become the biggest trailer of all time with 718 million views in just 24 hours. The Spidey trailer from Sony Pictures broke the previous record held by “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which had 365 million views. Good thing someone at Sony had the “SPIDEY SENSE” to green light the project. Segment 8: The argument between Justin Bieber and Usher at the Oscars after-party was HEATED and continued to escalate until others intervened between them. The incident occurred at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, hosted by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and was attended by a star-studded guest list. The friendship between Man Baby and Usher has been strained. SURPRISING? NOOO. Segment 9: Attention geeks! There will be a Minecraft World amusement park opening in London in 2027. The $70 million project will open within Chessington World Adventures in the UK from Microsoft-owned “Minecraft” maker Mojang Studios and owner of the Legoland theme parks, Merlin Entertainments. But, you WILL have to leave your Mom's BASEMENT. Segment 10: Idiot Of The Week – TikTok star Benjamin Gleason was arrested and charged with rape. He is now in Columbia County jail in New York. He’s been charged with 2 counts of rape, 1 count of predatory sexual assault committed against more than 1 person, 1 count of criminal sexual act in the 1st degree by forcible compulsion, and 1 count of 1st degree sexual abuse. IDIOT! Segment 11: Kelly Osbourne and her fiancé, Slipknot keyboardist Sid Wilson, have ended their engagement. This is because of Kelly’s difficult time dealing with the loss of her father, Ozzy Osbourne, who died last July. The breakup comes 7 months after Sid proposed to Kelly at Ozzy’s final concert with Black Sabbath last summer. But did her EMACIATED look also contribute? Segment 12: Nicki Minaj is being sued for failing to pay a BIG bill. 24/7 Productions is suing Nicki for refusing to pay them $275,000 for the company's services to produce two concerts for Nicki. The rapper was evidently paid over $650,000 for the shows, but STILL won't pay the bill. Hey, what do you expect from a Super Freaky Girl? Segment 13: “REACHER” star Alan Ritchson was caught on video beating up his neighbor, Ronnie Taylor. The problem started when Ritchson loudly rode his motorcycle through their quiet Tennessee neighborhood at a high speed. After Taylor jumped out in front of Ritchson's bike, Alan punched him and kicked him four times. But no charges were filed, as a verdict of self-defense was…REACHED. Segment 14: A California jury found that Bill Cosby HAD drugged and sexually assaulted former waitress Donna Motsinger in 1972, awarding her $19.25 million for her trauma over the past 54 years. Cosby served three years in prison but was freed in 2021 after his conviction was overturned in Pennsylvania. Pay up, Bill! Segment 15: Trash Bin – Stars of “The Real Housewives of Pretoria”, a South African installment of the popular franchise, have been arrested for stealing thousands of dollars' worth of groceries from Publix, a Florida grocery store. Melany and Petrus Viljoen were charged with aggravated grand retail theft and accused of stealing 392 items. That's SOME shoplifting! Segment 16: News Wrap – a) Major League Baseball has signed a deal with gambling company Polymarket which will allow you to pretty much bet on anything to do with the game. b) Amazon is planning a new smartphone more than a decade after its Fire Phone flop. c) Xiaomi has trialed the use of its self-developed humanoid robots in its electric vehicle factory. Two humanoid robots can complete 90% of the work in three hours. Let THAT sink in. Segment 18: Song Of The Week – Dominic Fike – “Babydoll” – Dominic Fike had a difficult childhood, growing up in Naples, Florida because both of his parents were heroin addicts. His father briefly showed up over the course of a few weeks and taught him how to play guitar before disappearing again. Eight years ago, he made a tape of a song in a room a friend let him stay in, while he was under house arrest. He was dead poor and only had his music to guide him forward. He is now a well-known musician and actor on the hit series “Euphoria.” A song from that dark period of his life has taken off which we LOVE. Here's Dominic Fike with the Song of the Week, “Babydoll.” That was Dominic Fike with the Song of the Week, “Babydoll.” The post LA SPINZ – March 30 2026 appeared first on LA Spinz.

In The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness, Sarah Ramey shares her journey through chronic illness and the medical system's blind spots. This week, we're bringing forward a powerful 2022 conversation with Sarah Ramey, author of The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness, whose novel was selected as a MomAdvice Book Club Book the year that this conversation was recorded. This discussion remains as urgent and resonant today as when it first aired, offering an unflinching look at chronic illness, medical bias, and the stories women are too often forced to carry alone. In this episode, we also discuss the complexities of the mind-body connection, the role of privilege in accessing care, and the turning point that led Sarah toward healing through functional medicine. Anne Patchett featured The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness in her "If You Haven't Read This Book, It's New to You" series for Parnassus Books. She described it as crackling, electrifying, funny, and fast-paced—a book that will outrage you and one you won't be able to put down. I co-sign this recommendation and am proud to pull this out from our studio vault as we celebrate this month's book club book, The Mad Wife, and the ways women's health has been so misunderstood. In this spoiler-filled conversation:

Christina Applegate doesn't need anyone's pity or approval. That's the takeaway from her new memoir, "You With the Sad Eyes." She looks back at some of the toughest moments in her life, from abusive relationships to her recent multiple sclerosis diagnosis. But she also shares with Rachel the joys in her life, like raising her 15 year old daughter and watching Bravo reality television. A memoir can feel like a mirror you didn't ask for. We opened Christina Applegate's and found an unvarnished account of survival: a child actor who worked to live, a dancer who prayed with her body, an artist who hid behind “Christina Applegate” until truth demanded center stage. We dig into the fault lines: body image and shame running alongside career highs; Sweet Charity on Broadway as a masterclass in grit after a brutal injury; pay inequity countered by quiet solidarity; and more. Her reflections on breast cancer and MS aren't wrapped in “warrior” clichés. If you've ever performed strength because the world is allergic to pain, her confession will help you feel seen.We also sit with research tying childhood trauma to MS risk, not as final verdict but as a challenge to take our histories seriously. By the end, she rejects the persona and claims the name her people use—Kiki—then asks a question that lingers: Who are you?Hit play for a thoughtful, unsentimental conversation about truth, trauma, dance, illness, craft, and the fragile alchemy of happiness-with-sadness. Today, The Two Mikes interviewed the author Dan Perkins, who has written six novels and three children's books. Mr. Perkins' new book is the first volume of a work entitled Sad Eyes: Book One:1912 to 1939: A Nurse's love of her country during WW II. The book is the story of a woman named Mary Ellen Murphy who was born in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1912. The book follows Murphy's life, education, job experiences, relationships, accomplishments, and lessons learned to the eve of war. The book is a fictional memoir written in the first person, and Mr. Perkins has already been applauded for his ability to successfully write in a manner that reflects Murphy's femininity, desire for independence, commonsense. and her development of ability to compete in a then male-dominated society. Murphy leaves Waterloo after high school and attends nursing school in Chicago, and upon graduation attends another school to be trained as an Emergency Room nurse. The latter requires working 50 weeks per year, both learning her medical skills and working after classes and on weekends in the hospital to help pay for her board and tuition. She graduates and works for several more years in Chicago, and then moves to San Diego and takes a job with the U.S. military and is assigned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. At Pearl Harbor she is assigned the task of assessing the quality of the medical supplies that would be used to address wounds in case of war. She finds those supplies to be poor in quality and improperly stored. Thereafter, Murphy's career begins to unfold as she gains ever greater confidence, responsibilities, and respect among her peers and seniors as war nears for America. In this book, Mr. Perkins, who also has 50 years experience as an investment adviser, provides another brick for the still unfinished building that will eventually house an accurate and encompassing picture of the many key roles played by women in winning World War II, especially in areas such as medicine, air transport, scientific research, administration, and espionage. It should be welcomed by all Americans. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/esquirlas-del-cosmere/message

In this episode we're featuring Kaia Kater and a nod to the Brothers Adderley. First up, the new roots and blues of Kaia Kater. She's Canadian born, yet embodies all the musical treasures the Americas have to offer. From bluegrass, folk, and jazz, to MC's like Rakim and Kendrick Lamar, it all comes together in this burgeoning artist's style of songwriting. Along with Ms. Kater, music columnist Bao Le-Huu (This Little Underground/The Orlando Weekly) joins in the conversation. Speaking of taking in all the sounds of America (and the world at large in this case), we pay tribute to the brothers Adderley: Cannonball and Nat. With a body of work that left no stone unturned, these two did it all with a sense of musical adventure and accessibility with a bit of show-biz gleen. All types of great music passed through the brothers' horns, ranging in themes to folklore, Broadway, afrobeat, astrology, religion, and psychedelia. Along the way the left a trail of bonafide classics - Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and Sack O' Woe - not to mention a who's who of talents they helped to foster, from Joe Zawinul, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Yusef Lateef, and more. SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records).
