Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we give an update on the Law Abiding Biker Store We moved the Law Abiding Biker Store from Richland, WA to Union Gap, WA in June of 2023. Rick "Big Daddy Kane" and Brian "Goat" White ran the store successfully out of Richland for years. We can't thank them enough for their awesome work. The plan was always to bring the Law Abiding Biker store up to the Yakima, WA area. That plan came to fruition this year. We were fortunate enough to purchase a building in Union Gap, WA that is right on Main Street. It's a great location for several reasons; it's centrally located between my house and Lurch's house, it has quick freeway access, and it's near shipping companies. The address for the Law Abiding Biker Store is 3302 Main Street, Union Gap, WA 98903. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The building had good bones but it was due for some much-needed love. We stripped out all the old technology and added up-to-date communications, security, and operations technology. We brought the electrical and plumbing up to date. The interior of the side occupied by the Law Abiding Biker Store was pained by Bob Dawson's Custom Painting. Bob is a long-time Patreon supporter of Law Abiding Biker. He did an outstanding job! Check him out if you're in the greater Yakima, WA area and need some painting done. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Yakima County, in south-central Washington, is home the city of Union Gap, which borders Yakima City's southern edge. The Union Gap, a narrow valley separating Ahtanum Mountain and Rattlesnake Ridge, was where a wagon train traveling to Puget Sound paused in 1865. The settlers chose to remain there under the direction of Dr. L. H. Goodwin. Yakima City was the name given to what was then only a tiny town around 1869 or 1870. The settlement grew into a small town, which was legally constituted in 1883 under territorial law.The Northern Pacific Railway Company unpredictably chose a location for its first and main Yakima Valley station that was about four miles from Yakima City in 1884. The majority of the town was relocated to a new location, originally known as North Yakima and then just Yakima, along with the railroad. At least 100 buildings were put on rollers and moved by horses to the new location. Yakima City's remains were renamed Union Gap in 1917.Listen now to learn more about how this settlement bounced back from near extinction!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!
In December of 1968, I left home alone for the very first time to go to a Pop Festival in Miami. Technically it was in Hallandale at a horse track. It was an absolutely fabulous three days except for the part where I lost my wallet and I was kind of adopted by a 29-year-old woman in an MG convertible who fed me and took me out to Miami Beach at midnight to go to a club called The Image.. And just like me, I am taking way too long with this post. Getting back to the festival there was such a diverse group of artists who played including Iron Butterfly, Chuck Berry, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, and the Turtles. On the night I lost my wallet, I was in the parking lot looking for my friend's car which I could not find. From the vantage point of the parking lot, I could hear two different groups playing. On one stage which was called the Flower stage in front of the stands, I could hear Iron Butterfly. In my other ear I could hear the Turtles singing Eleanor. It was at this time that I gave up looking for my friend's car and I had decisions to make. One was to panic because I was 17 years old away from home for the first time and had no money because my wallet had disappeared and I had no ride to get back to my friend's house where I was staying. The other decision was which stage was I going to go to. I was actually in the stands when Iron Butterfly took the stage and heard most of their set before I headed out to the parking lot so I decided to go over to the Flying stage and listen to the Turtles. they were absolutely wonderful. great harmonies, very tight band and it was there that I met the wonderful lady who rescued me and took me to Miami Beach to the club and then back to her apartment to spend the night. ( that by the way is yet another story that I will never tell). The next morning after she fixed me breakfast she dropped me back off to the festival and gave me her ticket for the third day since mine was in my wallet that was gone. She also gave me $5 to buy something to drink or eat later. I wonder what happened to her, but I digress this post is about the Turtles.I did not see them in concert again until 1992 when they were part of a radio concert at Coachman Park in Clearwater that included a bunch of different bands. My teenage son TyTyler Crose was with me and anyone who knows him knows his vast knowledge of classic rock and roll. Because of my work and radio and knowing the right people I was able to gain access to the restricted area next to the stage and I took Tyler with me while the two remaining members of the Turtles Howard Kailyn, and Mark Volman We're hanging out and Tyler got to meet them both. What a bunch of people do not know is that Howard and Mark at one time in a break from Turtles fame became Fluorescent Leach and Eddie and were part of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Great evening, lots of great entertainment including the Turtles which brings me to my last paragraph. So, today because I genuinely have no life I was looking at YouTube and I see a video from the 2023 Happy Together tour. They actually were here I believe in May at Ruth Eckerd Hall but because I don't know anything that's happening I missed the show. I am kind of glad I did. As I was watching the video I got to see the Cowsills and then Gary Puckett formally of the Union Gap. As I understand it he is a local resident here in our area now. I then kind of skipped ahead a little bit because I really wanted to see Howard and Mark. They were introduced with great fanfare, except for one thing. No Howard Kailyn. Further research told me that he had retired because of some severe heart problems. I understand we are all getting old as crap. But, oh holy crap, His replacement was the guy that sang for the imaginary group called The Archies. Remember them? And to my shock and horror right in the middle of the set, he decided he was going to sing Sugar Sugar. I am so grateful for experiencing them in the beginning and midway thru. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thedailygrateful/message

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, Lurch and I discuss our plans to expand Law Abiding Biker in 2023. I started Law Abiding Biker in the Spring of 2013. It began as a podcast followed by a YouTube Channel. After a couple of years, I realized I would need to monetize Law Abiding Biker if I wanted to keep it going. So, in 2015 I started a modest online store and our first product was our beloved Biker Gripper. The Biker Gripper remains one of our best sellers to date. The "store" was in my garage and my family helped me pack and ship. It didn't take too long for us to figure out this was overwhelming for my family. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE About the time we figured out it was too much for us, Rick "Big Daddy" Kane came to me with a proposal to become the store manager and add more products to the store. The "store" was moved to Big Daddy's garage. He brought on many products and the store began to flourish. Unfortunately, in 2017 Big Daddy's garage and house caught on fire and the store was a total loss. Thank God Big Daddy was able to get out of the house and he was unharmed. We started over from the ground up and moved into a storage unit. In 2019, we found a commercial space in Richland, WA. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The idea has always been to move the store to the Yakima area when Big Daddy retired from his Law Enforcement job. He let us know last fall that he was retiring in 2023. So, Lurch and I started looking for a store. We had quite the adventure of finding something that would suit us. In January of 2023, we found a building in Union Gap, WA, and purchased it. The building is located between Lurch and me, and it is accessed easily from the Interstate. The plan is to move the store to our new location in July 2023! NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: A Must-Check Harley Milwaukee-Eight Oil Leak Issue! FOR YOUR SAFETY! Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! No-one expected the '70s song "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" to endure. Least of all, ELLIOT LURIE who was the lead singer and main songwriter for the band Looking Glass, the group behind the hit song. The song has been on constant radio rotation since 1972 and has been featured in movies, TV shows and the Simpsons. Elliot is surprised by the song's staying power and admits it has certainly helped him build a career. He started playing guitar in high school bands and then in college he formed Looking Glass with two other guys. The band has had various drummers over the years but he and his bandmates decided to pursue music after college, renting a farmhouse in rural New Jersey to make demos. They drove their demos to New York City, eventually getting a manager and a record deal. After graduating college, Elliot told his parents that he and his bandmates were going to take one full year to see if they could make something out of their music. It was at that farmhouse that he wrote the song and he came up with the lyrics by playing around with a chord progression and singing the name of an old high school girlfriend, Randy. The singer then changed Randy's name to Brandy to make it more fitting for the story he wanted to tell. He explains that he had difficulty writing the chorus and had to run back and forth between the piano and his guitar to get it right. Elliot says the song's story came completely from his imagination and, contrary to urban legend, he had no prior background in the navy or sailing. He also confirms that his ex-girlfriend, Randy knew the song was written for her but had not been aware of this until it became a hit. Elliot revealed that the song had been recorded multiple times, first in a house, then again in a demo studio, and then with Steve Cropper in Memphis. When Clive Davis heard the song, he wanted studio musicians to help finish it, but Looking Glass insisted on playing their own instruments. "It doesn't surprise me as much that it was a number one hit record at the time as it does how well it has endured. I mean, it's endured better than a lot of records that were bigger hits at the time." -Elliot Lurie Elliot Lurie has enjoyed a successful music career spanning well over 50 years. He's not only been a singer/songwriter but has spent many years as a music director on several film scores. During the course of this interview he tells us all about his career path but keeps coming back to the fact that without Brandy, his musical career may never have gotten off the ground. As he puts it " it was luck and fate that led to the song becoming a hit." He does add, however, that many people may not know that Looking Glass definitely wasn't a 'one hit wonder' - they did score another Top 40 hit. Do you know which one that was? Find out this and much more this week. If you'd like to learn more about Elliot Lurie head for his website https://elliotlurie.com/ In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How did Elliot Lurie's song "Brandy" become a number one hit? 2. What was the experience like of playing in a bar band in the 70s? 3. What was the story behind the recording of "Jimmy Loves Marianne"? During the late '60s -a period distinguished as rock's most radical, innovative, and far-reaching - GARY PUCKETT and the Union Gap forged a series of massive chart hits that were full of melodrama. The group pioneered the hip-to-be-square concept two decades before the likes of Huey Lewis and the News. They were clad in Civil War-era get-ups (complete with fictitious military ranks) and they became an overnight success. Gary Puckett was born in the same town where Bob Dylan went to high school. He picked up the guitar as a teen, and while attending college in San Diego played in a number of local bands before quitting school to focus on music. Despite his parents' protestations, Gary began to devote all of his energies towards becoming a professional musician. He relocated to Los Angeles to serve as the house drummer on a tv series but knew that if his band was to be a success, he needed a gimmick. That's when he came up with the idea to outfit his band in civil war costumes. Unable to afford to have them made in LA, Gary took the group to Tijuana, where he had the outfits made at a cheap price. The band cut a demo and Gary began hawking it around. No-one was interested until he stumbled on a meeting with newly appointed label producer, Jerry Fuller who was impressed by Gary's soaring baritone. He agreed to check out their live show. Believing Fuller was due to arrive on Saturday, the band, known then as The Outcasts opted to save their energy, delivering an atypically mellow set on Friday night. But Fuller was in the crowd and despite this, signed the group on the spot. They were re-christened the Union Gap in 1967 and recorded their first single, "Woman Woman." In the spring of 1968, the Union Gap scored their biggest hit, "Young Girl," written by Fuller in the style of "Woman, Woman," but exchanging the age-old theme of infidelity for the age-old theme of the temptation of underage romance. The juggernaut rolled on, and the group continued rattling off hits -- "Lady Willpower," "Over You," and "Don't Give in to Him." In 1968, the band scored six consecutive gold records and sold more records than any other recording act...including the Beatles. They were touring relentlessly becoming tired and stressed out. Arguments ensued In 1969 there was a stalemate and the band disintegrated. "This Girl Is a Woman Now," was to be their last hit. In 1970, Puckett began recording as a solo act, but his efforts were not well-received. He continued making solo appearances in the months to come, but by 1973 he had essentially disappeared from music, opting instead to study acting and dance. He performed in theatrical productions in and around L.A., but his acting career never really took off either and in 1984 he signed on with the Happy Together oldies package tour. Two years later Gary was tapped to open for the Monkees on their 20th Anniversary tour, and he remained a staple of the revival circuit into the next century. Today he still tours with The Happy Together tour and as a solo act around the world. Gary joins me in conversation in this episode to tell us not only about his incredible musical journey but to provide valuable advise for anyone with an ambition. In his words it is "persevere, be patient and have faith. If you want something badly enough, it'll happen if you pour all of your energies into it." For more information about Gary Puckett head to his website http://www.garypuckettmusic.com/bio.php or to my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy Gary Puckett's story.

On this episode of Gavin Wood's Countdown podcast, Gavin chats to Gary Puckett, solo artist and the lead singer of 60's American pop/rock group Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. Active in the late ‘60's Gary Puckett & The Union Gap rose to prominence worldwide with hit singles "Woman, Woman", "Young Girl", "Lady Willpower", and "Over You", all achieving top 10 chart positions in the US, UK, and here in Australia. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap were one of the few artists whose first five releases went gold. Not even Elvis accomplished this. In 1968, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap had 6 consecutive gold records and sold more records that year than any other recording act, including The Beatles. Gary played a command performance at the White House for Prince Charles and Princess Anne by special invitation of President Richard Nixon. Once The Union Gap disbanded in 1971, Gary went on to work in theatre and perform solo. He was billed for the first Monkees reunion tour in 1986 and made more than 50 television appearances. The Gary Puckett & The Union Gap's "Greatest Hits" album is one of CBS's bestselling "Collector's Series" albums today.

The theme of this Music Day episode is Cover Songs.A cover song is when an artist performs a song that someone else has already performed. Most artists have done covers. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, for example, both started out exclusively playing covers before they began to write their own songs. This episode presents two of my covers. I prefer to call them “reimagined versions” because I always try to make my covers as original as possible. The first is “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks. It features the wonderful Lucy Woodward on vocals. Dave Davies of The Kinks has praised our cover. The second is “The ‘In' Crowd”, Dobie Gray's hit that was also a jazz hit for Ramsey Lewis. It features the sublime Ziarra Washington on vocals.Stay tuned for more Music Day episodes from time to time.“You Really Got Me” (Spotify link here) from The Queens Carnival album. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (initially credited as The Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett) was an American pop rock group active in the late 1960s. The group, formed by Gary Puckett, Gary "Mutha" Withem, Dwight Bement, Kerry Chater and Paul Wheatbread, who eventually named it The Union Gap, had its biggest hits with "Woman, Woman", "Young Girl", "Lady Willpower", "Over You", "Don't Give In to Him", and "This Girl Is a Woman Now". The members featured costumes that were based on the Union Army uniforms worn during the American Civil War. Jerry Fuller gave the act a recording contract with Columbia Records. The group eventually grew unhappy with doing material written and produced by others, leading them to stop working with Fuller. The band eventually disbanded, and Puckett went on to do both solo work and collaborations. He has resumed his performing with a new band, along with touring with The Happy Together Tour and some performances with Ringo Starr & his all-star band. #garypuckett #garypuckett&theuniongap

Label: Columbia 44297Year: 1967Condition: MLast Price: $14.00. Not currently available for sale. This was the group's first hit, credited as "The Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett". As impressive as the A side is, appealing to fans of both Sunshine Pop and Northern Soul, a lot of collector interest is directed to the equally impressive, but rarely heard, B side. "Don't Make Promises" was written by Tim Hardin, who released his own, folky version on the B side of a 1968 single, "Lady Came From Baltimore." This Union Gap recording is the first version released on 45 rpm, and somehow Jerry Fuller and Al Capps transformed Hardin's simple folk number into a catchy, crescendoing Northern Soul toe-tapper with a hypnotic bass line. As I listened to it again just now, I decided it deserved a place in the Classic 45s "jukebox", so have a listen to the mp3 snippet! (Please forgive me! To keep the snippet under 2 minutes and still capture the climax, I edited out the first verse following the first chorus. You wouldn't notice it if you were unfamiliar with the song.) The song's soul pedigree was further enhanced by Z.Z. Hill, who released his own soulful version in 1969 on Kent Records. Unfortunately, the song never did get the airplay it deserved... in any market. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Columbia Records factory sleeve. It has Mint labels and pristine sound.

The town of Yakima is not only the self-proclaimed "Palm Springs of Washington State" - but it's also the hometown of some remarkable and famous people. A partial list includes the late Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. The great short story writer and poet, Raymond Carver, grew up there. One of the most-admired writers for kids spent time in Yakima - and was the author of Pat Cashman's favorite books about Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy. She was Beverly Cleary… who died in 2021 at the age of 105. Perhaps one of the most underrated pop vocalists of all time is from Yakima: Gary Puckett. He named his band after the nearby town of Union Gap. Remember the big Indian guy from the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"? His name was Will Sampson… he grew up in Yakima - and, frankly, could have cashed in on his gum endorsement in that ‘Cuckoo' movie. ("Juicy Fruit") Believe it or not, the great standup comic, Sam Kinison - grew up in Yakima. The legendary movie stuntman and actor, Yakima Canutt, took his first name from the Yakima River Valley where he grew up. The skiiers, Phil and Steve Mahre are from Yakima. So was Pete Rademacher… the one-time heavyweight boxer who got knocked out by Floyd Patterson at Sick's Stadium in Seattle in 1957. And perhaps… most notable of all… Floyd Paxton was from Yakima. Who is Floyd Paxton? Only the inventor of the Kwik Lok Bread Clip. But there's another Yakima native whose name you might not know… but should. She was, after all, the very first executive producer of Almost Live! She's Dana Dwinell. After high school in Yakima, she graduated from the University of Washington… from which other Almost Live! alum like John Keister, Nancy Guppy, Bob Nelson and Joel McHale also graduated. It is considered a super easy college. But after Dana graduated, she soon got her first TV gig at KING in Seattle as a part-time production assistant - eventually working her way up to be the associate producer of KING's longtime morning show, Seattle Today. She got stuck in that gig until a new station program director came along with some new ideas. One idea was a local music video show called REV - an acronym that stood for ‘Rock Entertainment Videos. Dana became the co-producer of that - a show that introduced a new face to TV in a recurring segment called The Rocket Report. That new face? A guy named John Keister. But the new program director had another big idea: Starting up a never-before-tried local comedy show. After a couple of not-so-good pilot shows… it eventually became Almost Live! Dana Dwinell was tapped to be the executive producer. A couple of years later, she moved on. Really moved. To produce a morning show in Philadelphia - staying for three years. Later she went on to San Francisco for another TV opportunity. There were other stops along the way - but she and her husband eventually made the decision to move back… to Yakima. It would be a new career - in advertising. Today, she runs her own very successful company: D2 Communications. D2, see? Because her name starts with two D's? That's a cool idea using the first letter of your first and last name to form a business acronym. Unless your name is Pete Peterson. Find out more about the journey of the remarkable Dana Dwinell - as Pat talks to her from the D2 offices - in the Palm Springs of Washington state - Yakima. Not far from Ellensburg - the Oxnard of Washington state...

Hello Friends! Today on the show I've decided to take things through the ultra poppy route, with tracks ranging from the original pop star himself Elvis Presley, through Cilla Black, The Monkees, Sam Cooke, and even The Union Gap. Along the way, we'll have ballads from the Turtles, The Rolling Stones, and The Outsiders, and of course Buddy Holly will be popping by to say hello! We'll also be taking a look at Dusty Springfield's debut LP 'A Girl Called Dusty', with three great cuts that truly show off what a fantastic vocalist she was, and how she could wipe the floor with just about anyone else on the level. On this episode of The Business Side of Music, we have a conversation with legendary performer Royce Taylor, who talks about his early days of being in the music business, winding up on a worldwide Elvis Presley tribute concert tour, and after all these years on the road, why he doesn't hold back when performing on stage, keeping his show fresh each night. Starting out thinking he would be a preacher, Royce found himself singing in the church as a hobby. But as fate (and God) would have it, one thing led to another, and in a short amount of time, he formed the group The Chords, and in the following 12 years, went on to perform at hundreds of corporate events and county fairs, along the way releasing 16 albums. A child of the '50s, he grew up in a Mennonite Church and was self-taught when it came to singing. He went on to work as an on-air radio personality at WKTX FM in Ohio. He's gone on to perform with such legendary groups as “The Imperials,” “The Vogues,” and Elvis' longtime vocal backup group “The Stamps,” along with sharing the stage with The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, Frankie Avalon, Gary Puckett, and The Union Gap, and Peter Noone. Putting Union Gap on the Map When most people think of Washington state, they think of destinations like Seattle and Spokane. Union Gap is not so familiar, but it has a flavor all its own. Located on the east side of the state, Union Gap is nestled in the agricultural belt of Washington which gets over 300 days of sun per year. It is only a half-hour from the mountains, with Mt. Rainier in plain view. Despite its small size, Union Gap offers an unparalleled charm that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts and wine/craft beer connoisseurs alike. Eric has been able to leverage all of these traits to put Union Gap on the map, and he is helping tons of other small-town destinations do the same. Finding Opportunity in 2021 2020 has obviously been a challenging year for everyone in every destination, but looking forward, Eric plans to continue what he started. Union, Gap was on the precipice of widespread recognition before the pandemic. They have tons of unique events, from the world’s largest sprint car show to the annual Pioneer Power show hosted every summer. Eric’s focus as the Marketing and Tourism Director has been to bring these events to the forefront and use them to define Union Gap. He has continued to do that virtually during the pandemic, and as things reopen, the physical events will re-emerge as well. 2021 has so much opportunity, and Union Gap will be positioning themselves as an essential stop in the year of the road trip, with tons of outdoor activities to keep you busy. The difficulties of getting goods into Northern Ireland under the new post-Brexit arrangements are leaving some empty supermarket shelves in the province. SDLP leader Colum Eastwood tells Bloomberg Westminster's Roger Hearing and Sebastian Salek this is taking Northern Ireland further from the U.K. He warns the "sands of democracy" are moving, and Northern Ireland may not always be part of the union. Eastwood adds that although the virus restrictions are working and the R-rate is coming down in Northern Ireland, the Stormont government still made mistakes in its handling of the pandemic. Plus, Bloomberg Opinion's Therese Raphael joins to talk about the latest free school meals scandal.
