In light of Janis Stockhouse's unexpected death at the tail end of 2024, we're re-posting Kirk's 2019 interview with her for anyone who might want to listen to it.Janis started teaching at North high school in Bloomington, Indiana, in the early 1980s. It was a time when "jazz education" as a concept was still a relatively new thing. She retired 38 years later, having grown the North band program into a well-known Midwest institution, winning countless awards at festivals around the world and regularly turning out graduates who would go on to become professional musicians, as well as many others who would simply have a lifelong love of music. On this episode she tells the story of starting out at North and developing the program, along with her thoughts on how to get students to practice, which composers she prefers for student groups, women in jazz, funding for the arts, and some good old-fashioned album recommendations.REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE:Janis's 2004 book Jazzwomen: Conversations With Twenty-One Musicians, which she co-wrote with Wayne Enstice - there are used copies on Amazon, and you should really track down a copy and read itThe late great jazz legend David Baker, whose NYT obituary captured at least some of his legacy: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/arts/music/david-baker-who-helped-bring-jazz-studies-into-the-academy-dies-at-84.htmlMUSIC ON THIS EPISODE:"IU Swing Machine" by David Baker as played by the 2016 IU Celebration Big Band"Don't Get Sassy" by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band"Hang Gliding" by Maria Schneider from Alegresse"Bright Eyes" as played by the Bill Holman big band"Take the 'A' Train" by Billy Strayhorn as performed by the Duke Ellington orchestra"Vol. 6: All 'Bird' - Now's The Time" Play-A-Long by Jamey Aebersold (featuring Kenny Barron and Ron Carter(!!))"Laugh, Clown, Laugh" by Abbey Lincoln from Abbey Is Blue, 1959"Song Patrol" by Jane Ira Bloom from Early Americans, 2016"Lingala" by the SF Jazz Collective from their 2005 self-titled album"So What" and "Flamenco Sketches" by Miles Davis from Kind of Blue, 1959"My Favorite Things" as performed by John Coltrane on My Favorite Things, 1966"Mercy Mercy Mercy" by Josef Zawinul as performed by the Cannonball Adderley quintet on Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, 1966OUTRO SOLOIST: BJ CORDThis episode's outro soloist is BJ Cord, a fellow Bloomington North graduate and fantastic trumpet player based in Portland. Having developed an interest in aviation at the age of 7 he has not stopped learning, embracing new opportunities and …becoming fully involved in all aspects of aviation from hang gliding, microlights, gliders, power flying, paragliding and holding ratings for over 140 types of aircraft it was merely a matter of time before he found himself in a hot air balloon! Dale's passion for flying led him to build, develop and grow his successful flying school Alpi Aviation. When the opportunity as CEO arose in Bill Harrop's “Original” Balloon Safaris, he knew that this was his next adventure in aviation. He stepped up right away with passion and excitement and, as was predicted by all who knew him, he immediately committed to start gaining his hot air balloon licence! In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with “the best thing that ever happened to him”, his lovely wife Maggie! Together they have travelled to all corners of the globe, including North America, Europe and Africa. His 3 greatest aspirations are to fill Bill's shoes as best he can and continue to make the company a huge success, to provide an unforgettable experience to all of our passengers and guests, and to obtain his hot air balloon pilot's license.https://balloon.co.za/SummaryDale de Klerk, from Bill Harrop's Original Balloon Safaris, shares his journey in aviation and how he got involved in ballooning. He grew up with a passion for flying, starting with model airplanes and hang gliding. Eventually, he became a glider pilot, flew in the Air Force, and became a fixed-wing pilot and instructor. After the owner of Bill Harrop's Original Balloon Safaris passed away, Dale and his wife took over the company. They now have a team of experienced balloon pilots and offer balloon rides in South Africa. The conversation also touches on the history of ballooning and the tradition of serving champagne after a balloon flight. Bill Harrop's Original Balloon Safaris is the first commercial balloon operation in Africa and possibly the southern hemisphere. They offer balloon flights in the Machaliz Valley, which is known for its beautiful landscapes and wildlife. The company caters to both local South Africans and foreign tourists, with a focus on adventure seekers. They have a range of balloon sizes to accommodate different group sizes and weight limits. Safety is a top priority, and flights may be canceled if weather conditions are not suitable. Passengers are encouraged to arrive early to witness the balloon inflation process and feel more at ease. Typically you'd never hear the words “Wall Street” and “Consultant For Pokèmon” in the same sentence… That is, unless you're today's guest, Lucas Root. If it wasn't apparent already, Lucas' path is the definition of “non-linear”. Lucas spent 17 years on Wall Street doing mergers and acquisitions until he burned out. Badly. In his own words, he was “dying” and a “ghost in his own skin”. Realizing that he had to change, he tried his hat at consulting… starting out by making 400 cold calls in 6 months. 398 said no. Two said yes. ONE of them was The Pokèmon Company, and Lucas is still working with them 8.5 years later. Today, Lucas is a community builder focused on empowering communities and leadership through technology. This is a FUN and wide-ranging episode. 3 things to look forward to in today's episode: 1) How Lucas survived a near-death hang gliding experience by literally holding together a broken glider with his bare hands 2) How the language you use shapes your reality and why it's the #1 element to building effective communities 3) The #1 (and surprising) thing that Lucas learned from watching Pokèmon grow from $400M - several BILLION dollars in sales To learn more about Lucas, visit https://gobeyondcurious.com/podcast/lucas-root/

On a sunny day in the spring of 1971, a ragtag group of adventures gathered on a Newport Beach hilltop to participate in the first hang-gliding meet in modern history. A front-page story in the Los Angeles Times and an eight-page spread in National Geographic magazine about the rickety flying machines and their pilots captured the imagination of readers around the world and launched the sport of hang gliding.

THE TORNADO ENGINE+ by Jim Quinn, Bsc Fimeche This is the inside story of the man who was known as the White Tornado in Rolls Royce Bristol aero engines, for he outlines the work he and others carried out over 21 years during the early concept, development and in service stages of the Panavia MRCA-Tornado engines. He went on to Project Manage Europe's first production single crystal turbine blades, and then worked on Control Systems for several years, describing these works as the story proceeds. A whistle blower, he enjoyed Gilbert & Sullivan, Hang Gliding, and Motorsport, and he eventually left RR, to work with several charities, particularly Headway and Remap, where he describes his experience as an inventive carer of disabled people of all sorts. As a Humanist, he has experience of and interest in many things, and the book thus contains a variety of challenging thoughts, including the nature of biological evolution (Extra Terrestrials too). Jim Quinn has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and over the years has also risen through the ranks to become a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He worked for Bristol Siddeley aero engines and then Rolls Royce aero engines, but left in 1994. He then worked for a charity called Headway where he helped mentally disabled people to cope with life, including bus and train timetables and how to count the cash in their hand. He then worked for a charity called Remap which help physically disable people with one off equipment to help their independence, and has now worked voluntarily for them for 21 years to the present day. He is a Design Engineer and a Humanist and likes thinking about many things including evolution and nuclear weapons. https://www.amazon.com/Tornado-Engine-Jim-Quinn-Fimeche/dp/1648034918 https://www.westwoodbookspublishing.com/books/the-tornado-engine/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/westwoodbookspub.mp3
